Happy New Year!
I like to think that with each new year comes a certain level of hope—a place to start anew, to hatch fresh ideas, pursue interests, and redefine practices. Whether you fully embrace the winter season or find warmth indoors, Waterville Creates offers something for everyone: cozy film screenings on a snowy afternoon at the Maine Film Center, live performances at the Waterville Opera House, or hands-on learning like 3D printing at Ticonic Gallery + Studios. Our wide range of programs welcomes all ages and interests.
There is something else that Waterville Creates offers and supports—kindness—and it’s at the heart of what we do. Kindness to ourselves and to others—to patrons, neighbors, friends, family; our staff and volunteers actively practice and embrace our code of conduct and core values. This means that we support, encourage, and actively promote diverse voices and experiences; that we aspire to bring our community together to celebrate the arts and creativity, while fostering lasting, restorative connections to health, happiness, and the pursuit of belonging; that we create space for one another and promote a sense of wonder, awe, and appreciation not just for the arts, but for the world we share. These values underline not just our visitor experience, but the human experience.
Across all our programs, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming space for all. Bring your curiosity, share your enthusiasm, and join us in building a community rooted in kindness, compassion, and a shared love for the arts.
With gratitude,
Patricia King Vice President

CJ GILLIGAN EVENT + VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
WATERVILLE CREATES
Name, title, and when did you begin working at Waterville Creates?
My name is CJ Gilligan (she/her), I have the great pleasure of being the Event + Volunteer Coordinator, and I began working at WC in early June of 2024!
What does a “typical” day look like for you?
I would assess what our events needs are for the day (if we are offering any programming that requires volunteer support, any catering or space needs like tables, etc.), connect with our amazing volunteer network about upcoming volunteer needs and general volunteer outreach, and attend any meetings with my amazing coworkers to learn how I can provide event support to their programming!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love working with amazing volunteers who are passionate about bringing accessible arts into our community. To spend their time and energy supporting our programming makes me feel hopeful and grateful for a better world. The popcorn is great, too.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
I am laying on a beach in a tropical oasis, being fanned and fed grapes by large, muscular humans, sipping something fruity, and my cats are also there but they are talking and saying the nicest things about me. Oh, and I have tacos. Endless tacos.
Can you recommend an artistic experience our readers should try?
The “National Theatre Live” productions streamed at MFC are a must-see! It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see performances by amazing actors, such as Andrew Scott (a personal favorite of mine) in Present Laughter.
