Do you know who that is? Because she didn’t! Our friends Mark and Carrie of Ybor City— make that GaYbor—are always sharing stories about celebrities visiting the historic and very gay district of Tampa. But their news from the weekend of Aug. 27 really caught our attention. It seems while Daphne Ferraro was entertaining the crowds at Hamburger Mary’s during the 10:30 p.m. drag show, she pulled none other than Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive lineman Chris Hovan, who was enjoying Ybor with his wife, Jaimi, onto the stage. The guys tell us that Ferraro harassed Hovan pretty bad and he was an incredible sport. The kicker? Ferraro didn’t know she had selected a local sports celebrity as her target until after the show! It’s great to hear a local NFL star is willing to hang with the LGBT community on a Saturday night.

Pride gives “Trevor” a hefty check On the day that the Tampa Bay Rays, along with members of the Tampa Bay LGBT community, joined together to film an “It Gets Better” video, St. Pete Pride forked over more than $1,000 to the Trevor

Project. The $1,042.72 was donated to the charity’s “$13,000 for Trevor’s 13th Birthday” fundraising campaign. “The two go hand in hand,” St. Pete Pride executive director Chris Rudisill said. “It is important to our organization that we reach out to not only assist organizations that help LGBT young people, but to also make a statement to them that life gets better” The money was raised at St. Pete Pride’s 2011 Tropical Wave Silent Auction, which was held on June 18, 2011 at Push Ultra Lounge in downtown St. Petersburg. The previous year, the event helped raise money for The Dali Museum’s building project. For more information, call St. Pete Pride at 727-279-LGBT (5428).

Bradenton welcomes the queens It appears as if Bradenton is finally coming out of the closet. The city, which doesn’t exactly have a strong history of LGBT acceptance, will play host to the Miss Florida Regional King and Queen Pageant on Sept. 9. The event, which benefits Prism Youth, will be at the very LGBT-friendly Manatee Players Theatre on Old Main Street. Contestant are still welcome to enter to compete for the crowns and sashes. To enter, contact none other than Jasmine Skiies, at 941-536-7642.
