‘Love-In’ lesbian couple marries in New York Orlando | A lesbian couple who has made it a point to apply—and be turned down—for a marriage license every year at the Orange County courthouse hasfinally heard a clerk say “yes.”

Nicki Drumb and Rachel Gardiner have been together for five years. Three years ago, they began applying for a marriage license in Orlando to make a statement for marriage equality. They balanced their protest with a positive event. For the past several years, the couple has hosted the Human Heart Love-in, also held on Valentine’s Day, where community members gather and form a giant human heart “to remind everyone that at the heart of the issue of gay and lesbian equality—including military service, marriage and adoption rights—is love,” according to the event’s web site.

The couple applied for their legal marriage license on Aug. 5.

“It was amazing how much impact that had, when I got to the courthouse and realized, wait, she said ‘Yes’?” said Drumb.

Before heading into the courthouse, they visited with Gardiner’s niece in Manhattan and discovered they had a surprise wedding guest—Gardiner’s sister.

“That was so magical and special for both of us to have family represented there,” Drumb said.

Gardiner and Drumb had a commitment ceremony about four-and-a-half years ago at their church, which Gardiner’s sister had also attended.

“That was the most heart-expanding moment I’ve ever had, to know she took that initiative and flew up there to celebrate that day with us,” Gardiner said. “She was at our first ceremony, so it wasn’t a surprise she was supportive.”

Once inside the courthouse, they were surprised to find that the lines were short and the process quick, and they had the fortune to meet a kind clerk named “Jenny.”

“[After getting the license, Jenny] asked if we had any other questions and I said, ‘Would you give me a hug?’ Drumb said. “She came around and gave us a big hug. It was so joyous and it really struck me as I sat back down, I’ve been here over and over again and heard no, and how powerful the simplicity and easiness of it was.”

When the license was placed in her hand, Drumb cried.

“It was sweet,” Gardiner said. “We’d been told ‘no’ so many times.”

The wedding was on the west side of Central Park on Saturday, Aug. 6, under a pavilion with a humanist officiant. In addition to Gardiner’s sister and niece, two friends served as witnesses for the brief, meaningful ceremony. Also meaningful to the couple was the joyful, supportive spirit of New Yorkers they encountered. They received congratulations and glasses of champagne the rest of the afternoon.

“It was a wonderful day,” Gardiner said. “I couldn’t have painted it any better.”

The supportive spirit followed them home.

When Drumb returned to her advertising agency designer position at Bonnier Corporation in Winter Park, “It looked like Martha Stewart threw up in my cubicle when I came back,” and her coworkers surprised her with a wedding shower.

“It was just something that everyone was really happy about and it’s interesting because I sent out the email to the whole gang and there a couple people I was wondering how they would take it, but everybody turned up, said Susanne Oberholtzer, Drumb’s supervisor.

“I don’t feel like it’s that progressive,” Oberholtzer said. “I feel like it’s just the way we are.”

Although Drumb and Gardiner are finally legally wed, they said they’ll continue to apply for a marriage license at the Orange County Courthouse every year until same-sex marriage is legalized in Florida.

“It will happen. Florida will do the right thing,” Gardiner said. “Eventually everybody will have this opportunity to be married.”| l |

Mayor taking steps toward domestic partner registry jamie hyman Orlando | Orlando’s mayor is taking some steps toward his goal of a domestic partner registry for the city. Buddy Dyer and his staff are gathering information and feedback from hospitals and school boards.

“Our legal staff is currently working up the guidelines for the ordinance and what the forms would look like,” said Cassandra Lafser, city public information officer.

She said once those documents are finalized, they’ll go back to their partners for more feedback and then take the final ordinance “to the county to determine their level of participation.”

In May of this year, Dyer reached out to Orange County mayor Teresa Jacobs, encouraging her to lead the county in pursuing domestic partner registry at the same time as the city.

Once it is determined whether the domestic partner registry will be a city ordinance or a joint city/county ordinance, Lasfer said the next step is to bring it before the city council in October or November.

“If the county’s involved, we will have to bring it to their commission, as well, in that same time frame,” she said. “We’re still doing our research and our plan is to reach out to them once we have a plan in place.”

It seems that for now, the county is biding its time.

Steve Triggs, communications division manager for Orange County, said, “We’re letting them take the lead in this, in terms of due diligence, determining best practices.”

Triggs said county chief of staff, Graciela Noriega Jacoby, is keeping in touch with the city chief of staff, Frank Billingsley.

“We’re hoping to hear back from them then run it by our legal folks in the hope that it’s something we can do jointly in the future,” Triggs said. “Mayor Dyer’s timetable—he wanted to get it started right away, while Mayor Jacobs was concerned that there was too much on the county’s plate.”

Triggs said they’re “happy [the city is] going to do the initial research and then we’ll work with them probably this fall.”

Attorney Mary Meeks is working with both the city and the county on establishing the domestic partner registry.

“I’m very pleased that both the city and the county have committed very high level resources to this very important project,” Meeks said.

She said the registry will bring very important benefits to hundreds of thousands of people.

“It will be transformational for this area,” Meeks said. “I think we’re very lucky to have both representatives from the city and county government who are smart enough and brave enough to be working on this together, to make these positive changes for our community.” | l |

St. Petersburg | Jeffrey Klein is getting ready for what could be the biggest production he’s ever created. The former St. Pete Pride board member and owner of SwellFella Productions will be producing the Tampa Bay Rays’ contribution to the popular “It Gets Better” campaign. The campaign battles antigay bullying and homophobia and the Rays will be the sixth Major League Baseball team to participate.

“This is a great,” Klein said. “It’s great for me, of course, but it’s great for the community.

I owe a lot of this—if not all of this—to Brian Longstreth and his faith in me.”

Longstreth, who is credited with starting St. Pete Pride, got the ball rolling on the video when he spoke with Rays’ left fielder Sam Fuld at a wine tasting earlier this year.

There, Longstreth mentioned the anti-bullying campaign and soon Longstreth was in touch with upper management and owners of the Rays, who gave the project the green light. “[St. Pete Pride executive director] Chris Rudisill was also a big part of this,” Klein said.

“He’s a big Rays fan like Brian and he wrote the script for the video, which Brian and I have already given a look over.”

The video will be shot in one day—all

by Klein—on Tuesday, Aug. 23, and Klein is hoping to pack the stands with LGBT and ally community members to help spread the message of tolerance.

“I’ll be shooting the players individually that day at 2 p.m.,” Klein said. “It’s going to be tight because they have a game that night.

Rays players scheduled to participate include Fuld, Johnny Damon, Sean Rodriguez and BJ Upton. The Rays Cheerleaders and Raymond, the team’s mascot, are also scheduled to appear.

If things go according to plan, the video could premier online and before every remaining 2011 Rays home game as early as Aug. 30.

“I’m excited and I’m always picking up more and more stuff and I owe a lot of this to Brian’s faith in my company,” Klein said. “At one of the meetings with the Rays, Brian was asked if he needed help getting a production company lined up. He told them he already had one—SwellFella Productions.

Tampa Bay youth groups prep for 2011-12 school year greg stemm Tampa Bay | It’s back to school time again, and while many students prepare by going shopping for supplies, many LGBT students must face potential bullying in area schools.

Fortunately, there is support for those students throughout the Tampa Bay area.

The Metropolitan Wellness and Community Center, in both St. Petersburg and Tampa, offer a weekly youth group. The groups are cosponsored by GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network). The free groups are open to youth ages 13-20.

“The names of the groups are ‘Coming Out—So Now What?’” said Melissa Masse, MSW, a behavior health specialist with the Metro Center who runs the Tampa group.

“We offer a free meal to the teens and give them all sorts of incentives like free bus passes, free gift certificates to fast food restaurants

and others. It’s a place where LGBT youth can feel safe and that they are around people who understand them and are supportive.

Masse said the groups’ discussion points vary, but typically cover sexuality issues, gender roles and personal issues.

The St. Petersburg group has been active for some time and regularly gets about 15-20 teens at each weekly meeting. Meetings at the St. Petersburg location are on Mondays from 5:30-7 p.m. at 3170 3rd Ave. N. The Tampa group meets on Tuesdays at 1315 E. 7th Ave. in Ybor City from 5:30-7 p.m. The Tampa group averages about 10 participants.

“It’s been a lot easier to let teens in Pinellas County know about the group because they have such a great extensive network of gay-straight alliances in the schools,” said Masse. “Hillsborough is a bit more of a challenge because there are fewer alliances in Tampa schools and are not as organized as they are in Pinellas.” | l |

Ybor Youth Clinic just a few dollars shy of opening its doors greg stemm Tampa | After two years of diligence, a small number of dedicated professionals at the University of South Florida, as well as concerned private individuals, are honored to announce the realization of a long awaited effort: The Ybor Youth Clinic (YYC).

“The YYC is filling a long-recognized, yet unmet need in the Tampa Bay Area,” said Bill Kanouff, who is the primary fundraiser for the new organization. “We are reaching out to provide care to youth in Tampa Bay that have been ignored, underserved, or have not felt welcomed or comfortable in traditional health care settings. This population includes HIV positive and high-risk youth, LGBTQ youth, homeless and street youth, and sexually exploited youth.”

While Kanouff is optimistic about the clinic, a few donations are still needed to make sure the doors open this year.

The YYC’s mission is to provide the highest quality, innovative, compassionate and nonjudgmental health care services to youth in an environment tailored to their specific and unique needs. Health services

offered by the clinic will include HIV testing and treatment; primary, specialty and episodic care; GYN and contraceptive care; comprehensive STI testing and treatment; psychiatric and mental health screening and care; and access to various adolescent research trials.

“In time, we hope to implement training programs for prospective nurses and physicians aspiring to gain the necessary knowledge and skills suitable to working with these vulnerable populations,” Kanouff added.

The group will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 8-11 p.m. at the Ybor Youth Clinic, located at 1315 E. 7th Ave., #104. Tickets are $100 per person and the event is open to the public.

If the address looks familiar, it's because the future home of the clinic is in the same building as the Metro Community and Wellness Center in Ybor City. The building is next to the Hampton Inn and Suites hotel near the iconic, iron archway spanning 7th Avenue.

“We started paying rent in August and we are just $10,000 shy of being able to open our doors to youth,” said Kanoff. “If just 100 people attend the fundraiser and donate $100 or more per person, we can realize are our goal. We are very hopeful that we will meet or exceed that.”

Kanouff says that the new center will offer support to Tampa’s LGBT youth that has not been seen before.

“Many of these kids have been rejected by their families either because of who they choose to love or their health status,” Kanouff said. “They need us.”

Details on the actual fundraiser were limited at press time, but admission includes food and entertainment. Every dollar raised benefits the Ybor Youth Clinic.

Sarasota | If the LGBT community loves anything, it’s a good costume party.

So organizers of the upcoming “Late Night Prohibition Party,” a fundraiser to help fight muscular dystrophy, are hoping for a strong turnout on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Bryan Hadley, who has been involved with several events in Sarasota—including this year’s Harvey Milk Festival—came up with the theme to boost participation in the benefit at the Sarasota Vineyard at 1528 Main Street in downtown Sarasota.

Entertainers scheduled to appear include the Black Diamond Burlesque and Sarasota pianist Garrett Roberts. Guests are encouraged to dress in 1920s costumes to represent the dapper prohibition era of the United States’

history.

“My late grandfather Donald Cronin was an ongoing supporter of MDA,” Hadley wrote in a press release, indicating that supporting the national charity was a family tradition.

Tickets for the party are $25 per person, or $35 per couple and money raised benefits the Greater Sarasota MDA, which helps locals living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and other related progressive muscle diseases in the Sarasota area.

Specifically, proceeds will help send local Southwest Florida youth to MDA’s summer camp, along with funding ground breaking research, wheelchair repairs, and maintaining local clinics for Southwest Floridians living with neuromuscular diseases.

Congressman Allen West under fire for anti-gay comments staff report Wilton Manors | Republican congressman Allen West has been making headlines with his anti-gay stance. West told the South Florida Sun Sentinel: “I can’t change my color. People can change their sexual behavior. And I’ve seen people do that. I like chocolate chip ice cream and I will continue to like chocolate chip ice cream. So there’s no worry about me changing to vanilla. I like to, you know, ride my motorcycle. What do you want me to do?

You want me to change my behavior and ride a scooter? I’m not into that,” implying that being gay is a choice.

West was already under fire for declining to defend previous remarks at a Wilton Manors forum, which turned into a rally attended by more than 100 people. Activist Stuart Milk was the featured speaker and said the LGBT community would not tolerate West’s “hatred.”

West said he opposes gay marriage but is okay with civil unions for gay couples.

The conference will feature more than 15 nationally prominent speakers, including: • Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa student. Wahls became an online phenomenon last year when the video of his speech to the Iowa House of Representatives in support of same-sex marriage went viral.

• Jeff & Lori Wilfahrt, the parents of Cpl. Andrew Wilfahrt, a gay service member who was killed in Afghanistan. In his memory, the Wilfahrts have become very involved in the fight against an anti-gay marriage amendment in Minnesota, which will be on the ballot in 2012.

• Sen. Cale Case, a Republican state senator from Wyoming. Sen. Case helped defeat an anti-gay marriage bill in the state legislature this year. He argued passionately that the bill was contrary to the state’s constitution, helping lead the country’s most conservative state legislature to reject the bill.

• Alix Smith, a visual artist whose work uses the conventions of portraiture to explore identity. She is currently working on “States of Union,” a project that documents same-sex

families from across America.

• James Duke Mason, creator of the Trailblazer Campaign in response to the scarcity of out LGBT actors in Hollywood.

The online campaign encourages LGBT people in the film industry to come out, and then upload videos encouraging others to do the same, in the style of the It Gets Better Project.

Attendees at the conference will range from veteran LGBT leaders, dedicated volunteer activists, elected officials, and college students.

Hundreds rally in Nepal for gay rights Hundreds of gay, lesbian and transgender people marched with supporters in Narayanghat, Nepal Aug. 14 to demand equal rights under a new constitution the country is in the process of writing. An estimated 500 demonstrators danced, chanted slogans and marched around in this town about 100 miles south of the capital of Katmandu. It was the first time that activists have organized a rally outside the capital.

Man who stabbed Seattle lesbian couple sentenced A man who climbed in the window of a lesbian couple’s Seattle home and viciously attacked the women two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison without release. Isaiah Kalebu,

who has a history of mental illness, was convicted last month of aggravated murder after raping and stabbing the couple at their home, killing Teresa Butz and injuring her partner, Jennifer Hopper. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Mexico City sees 1,000th gay marriage On Aug. 15, Mexico City marked its 1,000th same-sex marriage since lawmakers in the capital approved such unions in March 2010.

The city government says that about 6% of those getting married in same-sex weddings in the city are foreigners, and involved 548 gay couples and 452 lesbian pairs. About 85% of the marriages were between partners age 31 and older. Mexico’s average marriage age is 28 for men and 25 for women.

Last man interned for homosexuality by Nazis dies Rudolf Brazda, believed to be the last surviving person who was sent to a Nazi concentration camp because of his homosexuality, died Aug. 3. He was 98. Brazda was sent to the Nazis’ Buchenwald concentration camp in August 1942 and held there until its liberation by U.S. forces in 1945. An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 gay men were deported to concentration camps, where few survived.

Bachmann would reinstate US gay troops ban wire report Washington, D.C. | U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, fresh from a victory in a key Republican test vote, said Aug. 14 she would reinstate a ban on gay troops serving openly in the military if elected president.

President Barack Obama has certified that the U.S. military is ready to accept gay soldiers, and the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is due to be formally repealed on Sept. 20 after 18 years in force.

But Bachmann, a favorite of the ultraconservative Tea Party movement, said she would revisit the policy if she reaches the White House.

“The ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy has worked very well,” she told CNN’s State of the Union.

“I would be in consultation with our commanders, but yes, I probably will” reinstate the ban, she added.

The ban was overturned in a law adopted in December 2010 that first required the top military officer, the defense secretary and the president—who is also commander-inchief—to certify the change would not harm military readiness and that the armed forces were ready to carry it out.

In the interim, the Pentagon has drawn up new manuals and prepared the entire armed forces, some 2.3 million people who serve as both active troops and reservists, for the new policy.

Bachmann has raised the ire of gay rights activists amid reports that her husband’s Christian counseling center offered programs aimed at changing the sexual orientation of homosexuals.

GOP presidential frontrunner Michele Bachmann has a long history of anti-LGBT politics.

Six states now allow gay couples to legally marry, but Bachmann said judges must refrain from “legislating from the bench” on the matter.

“I think it’s more important that people have a right to weigh in on the laws that they choose to live under,” she said.

Gay marriage is not legal under federal law as the Defense of Marriage Act only recognizes marriage as the union between a man and a woman.

The White House says Obama favors legislation that would repeal the law, which also allows states to refuse to recognize a legally sanctioned gay marriage from another state.

Bachmann was speaking a day after winning the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa, an unscientific, nonbinding poll seen as an early indicator of which candidates are likely to do well in the first nomination battles early next year. | l |

Calif. court hears appeal on gay juror dismissals wire report

Pasadena, Calif. | A federal appeals case pending in California could determine whether trial lawyers will be barred from dismissing potential jurors because they are gay.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Aug. 4 in Pasadena challenging a Los Angeles prosecutor’s decision to strike a lesbian from the jury in a 2010 assault case against a gay federal inmate.

In that case, Nigerian-born inmate Daniel Osazuwa says he hugged a guard who was homophobic and he overreacted. The guard fell and Osazuwa landed on him. During jury selection, the prosecutor excluded a lesbian from the jury pool.

Defense attorneys told the panel that the trial judge erred in dismissing a lesbian from the jury, arguing that trial lawyers should not be able to dismiss potential jurors because of their sexual orientation.

U.S. Attorney Mark R. Yohalem countered that the prosecutor in that case had legitimate reasons for removing the potential juror, because she told the court her close friends included some Nigerians, and not because she was gay.

A favorable ruling in what some refer to as the “Osazuwa” challenge could extend constitutional discrimination protections to homosexuality. The federal judiciary has added race, gender and religion as protected categories pursuant to the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause, but efforts to add sexual orientation have so far failed. | l |

The conversationalists Apparently, some eNewsletter subscribers believe that I have crafted the message for them, personally, and they reply accordingly. I don’t have any specific examples saved (damn) but it never fails to crack me up when people hit reply and write as if they are continuing a conversation that just the two of us are having.

The hateful guy Oh, the hateful guy is a doozy. Here’s his first response: “Gay is a sure sign that God will send Jesus back to take the Christians [sic] home safely and destroy his homosexual enemies in hell.”

He doesn’t respond every time, but he wrote me again last week: “God made the rainbow, not the homo only when you give your life to Jesus will you be free from satans [sic] gay sin he convinced you to live in. bye and God help you all.”

I think he actually dialed it back a bit in that second response, don’t you?

Here’s what I don’t get: Not only does this guy apparently not know how to simply hit the unsubscribe button, but all of our eNewsletter subscribers actively signed up to receive the mailing. If he hates gay people so much, why did he sign up to receive the eNewsletter in the first place? These are the little mysteries that keep life interesting, I guess.

I used to be a Board member of the Metropolitan Business Association (MBA), Central Florida’s Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. When my term ended a few years ago, I got involved with other groups and advocacy projects, and did not stay as engaged with the activities of the MBA. So imagine my surprise when I attended a recent MBA social meeting at Hamburger Mary’s, and hardly knew anyone there! The sea of fresh, smiling faces basking in the gay sunlight made me think of those activist warriors who had paved the way for these happy and very out gay people to gather and network openly in downtown Orlando.

Orlando was recently designated as America’s 4th gayest city, in part because of several gay-friendly local ordinances that have been passed recently by Orlando and Orange County. But when the MBA was founded in 1992, it was too dangerous for the group to openly proclaim that it was a “gay” group. In the beginning, 90% of the membership wanted to remain confidential, which prevented the members from having

Right now, our nation’s greatest injustices are economic. One in seven Americans uses food stamps. Wealth has shifted dramatically to a very small percentage of the population.

Money to fund tax cuts and increased government spending—including two illadvised wars—was borrowed. To pay back the resulting debt, the architects of this grand plan now want to decimate our future by slashing spending on education, infrastructure, health care and social supports.

President Barack Obama is processoriented by nature. He gravitates toward conciliation and compromise; not a bad thing in certain circumstances, and something with which I can certainly identify. As the first African-American president, he may also feel vulnerable to unwarranted charges that he does not represent mainstream America.

Fresh off the horrific debt ceiling debate, and with an election campaign gearing up, now is not the time for conciliation. If he is to lead us out of this troubling economic reordering, President Obama must find the clarity of a civil rights activist, and the courage to articulate and act on it. | l |

They are inspiring but also unsettling, especially when rooted in reality, because we are drawn to consider how we would fare if tested in the same way. Would we have sued our employer and subjected ourselves to public derision like Andrew Beckett, the Tom Hanks’ character in Philadelphia? Four years after their last album, Light at the End of the World, Erasure returns with a vengeance, kicking off their U.S. tour Aug. 31 at The Ritz Ybor in Tampa and then heading to the House of Blues in Orlando Sept. 2.

In the interim, both have worked on solo projects. In 2008, Clarke reunited with Alison Moyet to reform Yazoo for a series of live dates to celebrate 25 years since the duo’s split.

2010 marked the release of Bell’s second solo album, NonStop.

The signature sound Erasure championed is more relevant today than ever, and once again dominating the global music scene as proven by such acts as David Guetta and LaRoux.

Produced by Frankmusik, whose production credits include Lady Gaga, Pet Shop Boys and Ellie Goulding, Tomorrow’s World is an angst-filled futuristic, electronic journey.

The Devil’s Double (Starring Dominic Cooper)

D

o you want to see an underrated actor totally dominate a movie? This biopic about the Hussein reign in Iraq boasts a solid performance by handsome Dominic Cooper (who up to this point has played suave but secondary characters in The History Boys, Mamma Mia and An Education).

Cooper portrays two real-life people. One is Latif Yahia, a noble Iraqi who had the misfortune of looking like Uday Hussein.

Uday is Saddam’s crazed, oldest son. Uday needed a body double, so he forced Yahia to undergo plastic surgery and learn mimicry for public events. Entrenched in Hussein’s world, Yahia fought to remain pure amidst kidnapping, rape, torture, drug abuse, and murder.

If you didn’t hate the Hussein family before, this film will do it. The script is overloaded with violence, meticulously cataloging all of Uday’s deranged and criminal behaviors. In fact, there’s more atrocity than plot here.

Yet despite this overkill, Cooper’s performance is odd and captivating. Each of his two characters is distinct, even when Yahia is pretending to be Uday. It’s impossible to turn away.

is a wonderful blue-suit actor; along with the effects, he brings a great energy and sensitivity to Caesar. Perhaps the pathos is simplistic, and the villains are boring. It’s Dr. Frankenstein with primates—not a bad idea, but this goofy story never rises above monkey business.

30 Minutes or Less (Starring Jessie Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, Michael Pena)

Last Friday night, the filmmakers behind the much better Zombieland ordered pizza and banged out a script. Over the weekend, they shot this lazy, unfunny film.

Eisenberg is a pizza delivery boy, a hotshot driver, but otherwise an aimless manchild. McBride wants to kill off his rich dad, so he hires assassin Pena. That’s going to cost $100,000, so McBride kidnaps Eisenberg, straps a bomb to his chest, and forces him to rob a bank.

It sounds so much cleverer than it is. Just how do McBride and friend Swardson know how to build an elaborate bomb?

They are otherwise idiots.

Why can’t Eisenberg think of absolutely anything to solve his problem? How does his teacher buddy Ansari just walk out on his students to help Eisenberg?

Octavia L. Spencer Plot holes abound. The Rise of the Planet assists The Help. characters are flat and of the Apes shallow, and the jokes are dry and lifeless. The actors sleepwalk (Starring James Franco, Andy Serkiz, Frieda Pinta, John Lithgow) through this crap and their improv scenes are pointless. It’s so cheap, with so many holes, it’s like a frozen pizza made with Swiss Ever wonder how those “damned dirty cheese. apes” took over the future in the Charlton Heston film? Well, now you can find out. It’s a solidly reverential flick. It also has a lot of The Help silly gravitas and some madhouse logic.

(Starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Franco acts like a depressed pothead, but Dallas Howard, Octavia L. Spencer, Allison supposedly he’s a neuroscientist working Janney) to cure his dad (Lithgow) of Alzheimer’s.

While testing his experiments on primates, Kathryn Stockett wrote the best seller Franco transforms a pregnant chimp. (How The Help. But one senses Stockett also read do these scientists not know the lab animal is Florence King, a fellow author who argues pregnant? Do the creatures sneak out of their that every upscale Southern white woman is cages for date night?) The mommy chimp a crazy bitch. That’s the only nasty, sweeping gives birth to Caesar (Serkis), a brilliant beast generalization in this tender movie. The that learns he’s not like his human buddies. She is also boiling mad that mommy (crazy, cancer-stricken Janney) fired her beloved black nanny. So Stone starts to collect stories from the maids and nannies: woes of being treated as second-class citizens, left poor, abandoning their own children while raising white ones.

Despite the vacuity of their employers, the help—Davis (Doubt) and Spencer— shine like freshly polished silver. These

actresses envelop what could have been stock characters. O

penly gay singer/songwriter Matt Zarley never set out to be a therapist, but with his latest album Change Begins With Me (out this month), he’s got a good start if he ever decides to change careers.

The album provides a nice counterbalance—especially for gay men looking for a male point-of-view—to Adele’s recent smash “21.” (“That CD is no joke!” says Zarley. “That CD is good! That’ll rip your heart!”) Like the British singer’s CD, Zarley’s album richly explores the difficulties of heartbreak in many of its tracks. But Change Begins With Me also provides songs of recovery, hope and inspiration. If music ever serves as your mental medicine, Zarley’s album more than fills the prescription.

“The album is a sort of journal to me,” Zarley says. “I was in a relationship for four years, and when we broke up I did a lot of soul searching. Through that process I wrote a lot of the album. All of the songs came from different parts of that process, of healing and closure.”

Of course, sometimes part of that process can involve anger (it is one of the stages of grief, after all) and the album’s lead single expresses that age-old sentiment in an incredibly modern way. “WTF” was inspired by a whirlwind romance Zarley once had that left him with nothing but confusion. Initially the two men met on Facebook—“‘Cause that’s the place to meet people now, isn’t it?” Zarley says with a laugh—and eventually met in person.

It’s no surprise that handsome singer/songwriter Matt Zarley was once named in People Magazine’s 2002 Hottest Bachelor’s issue.

“We met, and it was sort of electric and surreal, very sweet and romantic,” says Zarley.

“But it ended as quickly as it began, with no explanation. Very odd. He was young—27— but old enough to know better. I was in the middle of working on the album when it all happened and kept thinking, ‘What the fuck just happened? What was that?’ It was so hot and heavy, and emotional, and then nothing.

I’d never experienced that before.”

The song is already resonating with listeners. Dance remixes of the track are already making waves on Billboard’s Dance Club Music Chart.

Zarley proves he has a heart of gold—and perhaps wears his heart on his sleeve—when looking back at his former paramour.

“I don’t think people set out to be malicious and are actually heart-breakers,” he says.

“People don’t mean to hurt others—they just don’t have the courage to be honest.”

Zarley says his songwriting process starts from a very specific place, and then moves on to something more universal. (And really, can you get more universal than asking “What the fuck?” about a relationship that didn’t turn out the way you expected?) In his song “Forgive Me For Not Forgiving You,” Zarley continues to explore post-break-up frustrations, which, for the record, were based on a previous fouryear relationship, and not the aforementioned fling.

“It’s about what it feels like when you’re wanting someone to own up to their responsibilities for a break-up,” he says about the song. “You’re wanting closure, and they don’t ever provide it.” And when they don’t, Zarley offers up the album’s title track.

“You can’t expect other people to change,” Zarley says about “Change Begins With Me,” which closes out the album. “You can’t look to others to provide closure. You have to look within yourself and make whatever changes are necessary. I realized I had the power to make myself happy. I arrived at some sort of

peace with that. I realized this person doesn’t have the capabilities of providing what I’d like from him, so I need to make that happen for myself.”

Zarley is extremely appreciative when told his album makes for good—if inexpensive— therapy, and points to one final track as a sort of session closure.

“You’ll get to a place where you’ll listen to ‘I’ll Always Remember’ and you’ll know you’ve sort of healed,” he says.

Considering he was named the first openly gay bachelor in People Magazine’s “Hottest Bachelors” issue in 2002, it’s hard to imagine Zarley could stay single for long. Indeed, he has moved on and recently started dating someone.

“He’s good for me, in a lot of ways,” Zarley says about his new boyfriend, who served as the inspiration for album track “Perfect.”

“We’ve actually known each other for 12 years, and I always knew there was something special about him. He’s good for me, in a lot of ways. But I don’t think I’d appreciate what I have now had I not had the experiences I’ve already had. You have to allow yourself to go through whatever you need to go through, to get to that ‘better’ place.”

Hoping to allow gay youth to get to a better place of acceptance, Zarley has also released a gorgeous cover of the Pat Benetar classic “We Belong” as a fundraiser for The Trevor Project.

“I’ve always been really passionate about The Trevor Project and what they do,” Zarley says. “The work they do is invaluable to the next generation. I come from a childhood where it was pretty easy, a lot of supportive elements. I think these kids, especially in middle America that don’t have that sort of outreach, I think it’s an amazing outlet for them.”

in Tampa on July 4, 2010, during the Third Annual GaYbor Days celebration, Bell has been dating Florida Entertainment Group partner Steve Moss.

We caught up with the musician, who splits his time between London and Tampa, to discuss his new outlook on life, Tomorrow’s World and possible retirement.

WATERMARK: How has it been touring together after four years? Was it something you had to get back into the groove with?

ANDY BELL: Yea, you kind of get back into the groove. We just had our third show here in South America. We’ve done 12 here so far, then we go back to Tampa to get ready to turn the show around for the Tomorrow’s World Tour. We had a week break between the UK gig and this one. It’s nice to have a break because it helps give you a little momentum.

Tell us more about the U.S. tour for Tomorrow’s World.

It’s really lovely. We have more of a budget.

We’ve got a post-apocalyptic stage set. We made it so you can’t place it in any time period.

We’ll do like six songs from the new album and then the usual standards.

What made you want to work with Frankmusik? What did he add to the already successful repertoire that you and Vince have created?

The collaboration came about because of being suggested by the fans actually. He’s also

a big fan of Erasure. Frank’s really brilliant and his musicality is quite fantastic! It was great working with him in the studio. I think he made us sound very up-to-date. He uses lots of compression on the vocals, so it was quite different for me singing-wise because I had to sing really, really loud to compete with the music.

You start the US tour at The Ritz in Tampa, which is next door to The Honey Pot, an establishment managed by your partner, Steve Moss. How is that going?

Lovely! It’s been over a year. I feel like I’ve been given a whole new lease on life. There are all sorts of things I need to sort out so I can start my new life.

Has it been difficult making the relationship work with your busy schedule?

There are lots of things going on in London.

The record company is there. So, I’ve had to be there while making the album and also getting ready for this tour. We won’t be done until February of next year and then hopefully I can take a big break and spend some time out there and get settled in.

Erasure is best known for synth-pop anthems chock-full of hedonism and heartache. What story are you telling with Tomorrow’s World?

Of course more of that but more angry. For example, [one of the tracks,] “I Lose Myself” is a Dead or Alive type disco song, which basically says ‘I’m sick and tired.’ Sick and tired of feeling like you’re banging your head

against a wall fighting for gay rights all the time and getting thwarted at every angle by all these Right-Wing people. You want to say, ‘why don’t you just give us a break.’ After all this time, you just get sick of it after awhile.

The last time we spoke, you voiced your distaste for reality television. Yet there you were, doing a stint on the UK show Pop Star to Opera Star. How challenging was that?

I thought I was going to win hands down, but unfortunately, it was less about opera and more about a popularity contest. I thought it’d be more about learning about opera but it was about personalities. It was a lot of fun but it was hard work, especially doing the tour and doing that. I was flying back and forth for rehearsals. I thought it was going to be a walk in the park but it wasn’t. [By the end,] I was absolutely frazzled. My brain was fried. It put me off on those kinds of shows. I’m not a TV personality type person. The worst part about it was that I was really open and honest and [apparently] you can’t be like that.

What? You’re not allowed to be real on a reality show? So, have ever thought about being a judge on one of those music shows, like American Idol?

I was asked to be a judge on the Ukraine show Pop Idol but I haven’t got time at the moment. Although, since I’m so sure of what I do myself, I think I’d be too harsh judging people. Or I might go the other way and end up being too nice.

Erasure pretty much created the synth-pop sound in the 1980s and 1990s. Today’s music

is more electronically-infused; how do you feel about being a pioneer?

I’m quite surprised really. We’ve been working for a long time and it seems like we were out of fashion for a long time. So, you kind of have to just wait for the right time to come back and then you’re the flavor of the moment again. I guess we’ll just enjoy it while it lasts. You have to work hard and be in it for the long haul to make any kind of lasting impression.

Did you think you’d still be working with Vince and recording 25 years later?

It seems like it’s gone in a whisper. It’s gone so quickly and I can’t believe how much we’ve done. I’m very proud that I met someone like Vince and that I’ve been able to work with him through thick and thin.

What do you have planned for the next 25 years?

I’m probably going to retire. [Laughs] I am going through a Liza Minelli phase with my clothes. Maybe I’ll do a one-man show in Vegas or something. | l |

Local celebrity performer and Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 3 Finalist Alexis Mateo brought out the crowd for the Aug. 9 Tampa Bay Business Guild meeting at Clearwater’s Holiday Inn. The performer spoke to the crowd—while in his male persona—for nearly an hour, sharing behind-the-scenes dish about his experience on the popular Logo competition show. While at the microphone, Mateo shared that while a typical season takes about a month to film, her season lasted two months, thanks to an illness that sidelined RuPaul. That meant the thirdplace finisher had more time to spend in a hotel, secluded from her cell phone and her laptop. “I live on those things,” she told the crowd. Mateo shared a Q&A session with Al Ferguson of ALandCHUCK.travel, which is a major sponsor of the show. Both skirted questions about the upcoming season of the show, but it appears that no local queens will make an appearance in Season 4, which is filming now. The hardest part of Season 3 for Mateo? Staying in drag for hours. “I’m used to going to a club, getting in drag, performing, and then getting out of drag,” she said. “I was dressed for 12 hours a day—that’s not easy to do in heels.”

The Abbey Breaks Through

The 50th Birthday Roast of Janine Klein will take place Monday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. A source close to the anile actress asks, “does the 50 pertain to her age or a cover charge for her to feed her insatiable drug habit?” Per Ms. Klein’s request, the proceeds from this event will benefit the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention.

On Aug. 26 and 27, The Abbey will host its first theatrical show. After a sold out engagement at UCF, the theatrical production Break Through will premiere at The Abbey. Devised by UCF students, the play is composed of true stories, research and interviews from the LGBT community, transformed into a heart-rending piece that exposes the everyday secrets of what it’s like to be queer in America in the 21st century. 100% of the proceeds from Break Through will benefit The Zebra Coalition, a non-profit organization that provides services and safe spaces to troubled LGBT youth. The multi-purpose venue opened its doors opened in downtown a few months ago and boasts happy hours, concerts and social events.

Fall fashions are influenced by media and pop culture in 2011 steve blanchard

D

o you want to know what to wear this fall? It’s simple—just be sure you’re watching the right kind of shows on television.

As with every industry, technology and media seems to make things a bit easier in the fashion world. Mad Men, Rizzoli & Isles and even HBO’s vampire hit, True Blood, have influenced fashion designers’ palates for the 2011 fall season. That’s not to say that there aren’t a few trends unrelated to pop culture out there—but if you’re in doubt about what you should wear out on the town Saturday night, DVR an Emmy-winning drama and follow the characters’ leads.

And it’s not just the world of television that has captured the imagination of fashion designers this year. The music industry—as always—has a hold on this year’s looks as well.

“With influences of artists like Lady

Gaga, accessories are bold this fall,” says Ivanka Ska, a Tampa Bay fashion designer and owner of House of Ska. Once again, Ska is involved in Tampa Bay’s Fashion Week coming in September.

Such influences aren’t always a good thing, Ska admits, but “media couture” plays a significant role on all consumers.

“With fashion-sensible shows like Mad Men or True Blood—favorites to many—there has to be a great deal of wardrobe stylists keeping a close eye on the current affairs in style.”

Maybe the most important thing to remember for the fall 2011 look is color.

Gone are the full dark, goth looks of 2010 as bright accents take over for 2011’s fall and winter lines.

Bert Keeter

PROJECT RUNWAY SEASON 9 CONTESTANT

H

alston, Bill Blass, Yves St. Laurent. Fashion world icons that have one more thing in common—Bert Keeter has worked with them all. At 57, Keeter has lived an incredible life of achievement, heartache, strength and growth, from being at the height of his career to losing it all while battling addiction.

Now, the New York native is one of the 16 designers on the newest season of Project Runway airing on Lifetime. The candid couturier spoke with Watermark about recovery, returning to the fashion industry after a 22 year hiatus and making it work.

WATERMARK: In a way, Project Runway has been your comeback to the fashion world after leaving the industry in 1989. Why did you leave for so long?

BERT KEETER: I lived in New York in the mid80s, during the whole AIDS epidemic. I had some really close friends that I had known since highschool. I actually introduced the two of them and they ended up being lovers for 17 years. They both had AIDS and died a day apart from one another in 1989.

That really hit me hard, and then my partner, John, was diagnosed with HIV and he died in 1992.

Then, I had another friend that was murdered.

Shortly after, my mother died of cancer. So, I had a really rough time dealing with all the feelings. I turned to alcohol to deal with a lot of that and it just took me way down.

I was so morose and sad, and being in New York, there were too many triggers. So, I went to Washington, D.C. and created a new life there. I realized I was using alcohol to try and change the feelings I was having. I now live in L.A. and I’ve got a great recovery system here, best friends and it’s just made a huge difference.

I love being back in design. Back in the old days, if I were on Project Runway, I’m sure I would’ve done something to mess it up because it was too stressful or something. I’ve changed the way I react to emotions. I’ll be sober three years come Sept. 23.

Do you think you will win Project Runway?

It’s definitely up in the air right now. Some challenges I get and some, like the second, [pet store challenge], I just didn’t understand. Even though I had immunity, I really did try. When we were in the pet store, all the other designers were running around buying hamster and reptile cage filling as did I, but I didn’t know how I was going to attach that stuff to any kind of garment. I had never used a glue gun in my life. [In the end], I liked my garment but I think the judges didn’t appreciate the fact that I didn’t make it to its full potential or utilize the materials that were available like the other designers. It’s just one of those things.

On the show, some of the other contestants have described you as “harsh” and “unfiltered.” How do you respond to that?

Well, I think the “unfiltered” part is pretty accurate. I never had a problem mincing words. I

have definitely mellowed over the past few years. I’m not as opinionated as I used to be. I definitely call it as I see it. I don’t think I’m harsh. I can be very blunt. I’m really more just to the point.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I’ve gone through different evolutions. My designs are calm, uncluttered, clean, sleek and modern. I don’t go for that wow, over-the-top, shock factor that I think a lot of designers like. I try to design something that a woman can really wear—something that can be shown on the runway and easily be worn everyday; something a woman gets a lot of wear out of. My designs are pure and simple. They’re aesthetically understated without being boring, and intellectual in the way they’re constructed.

Who are your style icons/inspirations?

I like classic American designers like Bill Blass, who I worked for in the early 80s. His design aesthetic was more sportswear but he could take something like tweed and turn it into something elegant. Definitely Halston, who I worked for from 1985 to 1990. His designs were very understated.

Yves St. Laurent because he was revolutionary in high-fashion by putting women in jackets and trousers. I adore Christian Dior. I just loved their silhouettes—very architectural. Also, Charles Dames, who was an American designer in the 50s. He was amazing.

Has it been challenging jumping right back into design after being out of it so long?

I had not designed anything myself since I graduated from college. Even while working for Halston and Bill Blass, I would just create sketches and they’d be executed by someone else. To sit down and do it myself from beginning to end is really overwhelming. The pressure on the show is pretty amazing. Although, I realized in each challenge that I was doing really well.

I was amazed that I could really pull [a design] together. It was very scary though. For example, an hour into the first challenge, I was thinking to myself, “If this is only the first of 16 challenges I want to get out of here. I wonder if they’ll let me leave.” Luckily, the feelings left me and I was able to not only finish the challenge but win it. | l |

Ta l e n t Chrome Talent represents models of all ages, orientations

O

rlando | Especially in the 100-degree heat, Chrome Talent shined during its recent Ybor City photoshoot, highlighting a rainbow-hued lineup of hotties showing macho elegante for the upcoming fashion season.

Fashion “with a rugged feel” was the theme, and models were selected for their stunning features, says Chrome Talent Executive Director Jai Saint.

The pictures speak volumes on that subject, and those faces are just nine of the more than 550 actors, models and musicians Chrome Talent gets work for.

“Our goal is to provide the best talent for the job with the greatest service possible,” says Saint.

That comes with a pledge of no attitude, and no prima donnas.

“Chrome is decidedly different and refreshingly humble,” Saint says, adding that all ages and colors are welcome at Chrome.

One of Chrome Talent’s advantages is being

a Screen Actors Guild—or SAG—agency, according to Saint, which means access to professional shoots and gigs.

“Bigger budget, more pay—everybody wants a huge payday,” says Saint.

But first there’s the work, and during the Ybor City shoot, much of it involved staying cool and fresh in the blistering sun. Talent went indoors frequently and stayed sufficiently hydrated.

“I always take care of my guys and girls,” Saint said.

Chrome was launched just months ago from the evolution of the Urban Models talent agency.

“We talked about the name change for more than a year,” Saint says. “We had built a really, really good name, but in the end we felt Chrome was more marketable, and it’s never been used by a talent agency.”

That naming evolution also represents Chrome’s full range of talent as well as sexual orientations and levels of “outness.”

“We have a lot of gay talent but all are not open about it,” he says. Whether on the down low or out loud and proud, Saint likes to know each client’s story so as to be a better agent.

Despite being hardly anti-gay, fashion, film and TV in regards to actor sexuality has moved forward.

“People are so much more comfortable that they are finally coming out,” Saint says. “It’s not so detrimental to a career anymore.”

Even so, he encourages talent to come out at their own paces.

“The most important thing is that fashion is about beautiful people, no matter what color they are,” he says. “There are so many pressures about people’s color, but beauty comes in any ethnicity, and it can be any sex or sexual orientation, too.”

Find your color Everyone has a favorite color or two that they tend to lean toward. Maybe blues are for you, or maybe even a brown. For most people who care about how they look, trends are great—but finding that complimentary color within the trend is even more important.

According to Ska, think about that spice rack in your kitchen when deciding which colors work best this fall. Nutmeg, curry and paprika complement mustards; golden browns and deep wood colors and work well with yellow and red undertones.

“Lots of yellows and orange with pastels will dominate,” Ska says. “No one is afraid of colors anymore—not even New Yorkers.”

And those red undertones seem to link to society’s ongoing obsession with vampire films and television shows. Vino or berry colors are making a comeback this season, with burgundy, merlot, eggplant, cognac, deep reds, oranges and persimmons as the palette’s anchors.

If you’re not so into the vampire trend, go with grey and charcoal, which are considered the “new” basics this season. Browns— especially “camel” —will continue to be the best starting points for creating that perfect look for a night out this autumn.

Florida teams gear up for Chicago Gay World Series staff report Chicago, Ill. Florida will be well represented at this year’s Gay World Series. Six teams from Orlando and five Tampa teams are on their way to the North American Amateur Athletic Alliance World Series, which begins Monday, Aug. 29, with opening ceremonies at the city’s historic Navy Pier. Games begin on Tuesday, Aug. 30 with championship games slated for Saturday, Sept. 3.

“Events like the Gay Softball World Series are truly transformative, not only for the participants, but for the community,” said Chicago World Series president Ted Cappas. “Chicago is ready and excited to host [players and teams] for an incredibly memorable week.”

Orlando teams traveling to the 35th Annual World Series in Chicago include the A-division Force, B-division Broadway Crush, C-Division Shock and Parliament House Storm, and D-Division teams Mr. Sisters Arch Angles and Wild Stallions.

Tampa will be represented by the C-Division Crocs and Hammerheads,

D-Division Inferno and Panthers and the Hamburger Mary’s Masters.

As with most NAGAAA tournaments, well-known entertainment acts and personalities will be on hand for the opening and closing ceremonies. As of press time, actor and comedian Leslie Jordan was on-board to speak as well as straight British rugby star and heartthrob Ben Cohen.

Lesbian swimmer falls short in her Cuba/Florida swim wire report Key West, Fla. | Endurance swimmer and record-holder Diana Nyad arrived in Florida the morning of Aug. 9, but not in the manner she hoped.

The 61-year-old out lesbian swimmer arrived in Key West aboard a boat, hours after abandoning a 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida at about the halfway point.

She had attempted to become the first person to swim between Cuba and Florida without a shark cage, but ocean swells, shoulder pain and asthma forced her to give up the swim. Nyad was vomiting when she was brought aboard a boat at 12:45 a.m. Aug. 9—29 hours after she jumped into the water Sunday, Aug. 7.

“I would be lying to say I’m not deeply, deeply disappointed,” she told CNN. “This was a big dream, not just of the last two years but some 30 years ago when I tried it.”

After all of the work and effort that her supporters and followers invested in the last two years in preparation for the swim, Nyad said it was unlikely that she would attempt the Cuba to Florida swim again.

After much consideration, Nyad made the decision to call off the swim and was quickly taken aboard the Bellissimo, the 75-

foot yacht that carried her handlers, drivers, photographers, as well as friends and family.

Nyad said that as early as the third hour of her journey she began experiencing pain in her right shoulder. By hour 15, asthma was a problem.

As hour 28 approached, the pain was so great that she had to rest every 30 to 40 freestyle strokes, rolling onto her back to breathe.

“Asthma took so much out of me,” she told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta. “I couldn’t overcome it.”

The attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida was the second for the swimmer, who said at a news conference before the swim that she is fitter today than she was in 1978, when she first attempted the crossing but was unable to finish.

It took several months to gain permission for the swim from Cuban and U.S. authorities. Bureaucratic snags repeatedly threatened to call off the effort—already called off in 2010 because of weather.

She had been training for the event for two years, swimming up to 12 hours a day.

“You have to live your life with passion, you show your will, you feel proud of yourself when you go to bed at night,” she said. | l |

And I was just joined by a new seatmate—a nun! We haven’t spoken yet—because my Italian-English dictionary doesn’t tell me how to say, “Excuse me, Sister, but you need a shave.”

I’m not the only one touring—Cher is in the midst of planning one. As we told you months ago, she hoped that Burlesque would be a big hit, after which she would release a new CD which would also be a big hit, thus giving her a handful of new songs to trot around the globe. Never let it be said that Cher is ever deterred by poor turnout at the box office. According to her Tweets, she still plans on using the two Burlesque songs: “Putting in ‘You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me’ and maybe recreating ‘Welcome To Burlesque’ as it was in film on stage.
