KALETRA Use and Important Safety Information1 Use KALETRA (lopinavir/ritonavir) is a prescription anti-HIV-1 medicine called a protease inhibitor that contains lopinavir and ritonavir. KALETRA is used with other antiHIV-1 medicines to increase the chance of treatment response in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection. It is not known if KALETRA is safe and effective in children under 14 days old. ®

Immune reconstitution syndrome may occur after starting anti-HIV medicines, including KALETRA. This happens when you develop signs and symptoms of serious infections you already have, which may require additional treatment.

Large increases in certain fat (triglycerides and cholesterol) levels in the blood have occurred in some people receiving KALETRA. The long-term chance of getting complications such as heart attacks or strokes due to these increases in triglycerides and cholesterol caused by protease inhibitors is not known at this time.

New or more serious diabetes and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) have occurred in some people who take protease inhibitors, including KALETRA. Tell your doctor if you notice an increase in thirst or urinate often while taking KALETRA. Changes in body fat have been seen in some people who take anti-HIV therapy. The cause and long-term health effects of these conditions are not known at this time.

Increased bleeding has occurred in some people with hemophilia who take protease inhibitors, including KALETRA. If you are taking birth control pills or using patches to prevent pregnancy, you should use an extra form or a different type of birth control, since birth control pills or patches may not work as well while you take KALETRA. Talk to your doctor about how to prevent pregnancy while taking KALETRA. It is not known if KALETRA will harm your unborn baby.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should tell your doctor.

If you take KALETRA during pregnancy, you should talk with your doctor about how you can take part in an Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry. The purpose of the pregnancy registry is to follow the health of you and your baby.

Do not breast-feed while taking KALETRA. There is a chance HIV can be passed to your baby through breast milk and your baby may have serious side effects from KALETRA. Common side effects of KALETRA include diarrhea, nausea, stomach area (abdominal) pain, feeling weak, vomiting, headache, or upset stomach. These are not all of the possible side effects of KALETRA. The long-term effects of KALETRA are not known at this time.

How should I take KALETRA? • Take KALETRA every day exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

• It is very important to set up a dosing schedule and follow it every day.

• Do not change your treatment or stop treatment without first talking with your doctor.

• Swallow KALETRA tablets whole. Do not chew, break, or crush KALETRA tablets.

• KALETRA tablets can be taken with or without food.

staff report Orlando | Openly gay city commissioner Patty Sheehan has officially begun her campaign for reelection in 2012. Sheehan held a kickoff and fundraising event April 27 at the Funky Monkey Vault.

There is some uncertainty surrounding this particular race. Sheehan represents District 4, which is now subject to redistricting under Florida law, a once-a-decade process state legislators are squabbling over right now. Another area of uncertainty is whether Sheehan will face an opponent for her seat— as of press time, no other candidates had announced that they’ll run. Additionally, the date of the election is up in the air because it will coincide with the presidential primary and

Leadership changes at Mr. Sisters jamie hyman Orlando | The man who has been the face of Mr. Sisters since before it opened is no longer affiliated with the Orlando nightclub.

Mr. Sisters owner and vice president Don White said that he no longer employs Brian Humphries, a previous part-owner who had been instrumental in the design and launch of Mr. Sisters last December.

“I can confirm that he is no longer with us, but out of respect to all parties involved I cannot go into details,” White said. “Yes, Brian was dismissed.”

When asked if Humphries would be replaced, White said its “business as usual” for the club’s management and staff.

“At this time, I don’t know how the ownership structure will change,” White said. “Brian was a working equity partner.”

When asked what exactly that title means, White would not elaborate but simply said, “You work to gain equity in a company.”

Humphries also would not reveal any details about the situation.

“I am in the process of trying to work this out with Mr. White,” Humphries said.

“All I can say is that it was a wrongful dismissal.”

When asked about Humphries’ comments, White responded, “I’m not aware of negotiations like that.”

Humphries’ departure isn’t the only staffing change at Mr. Sisters. White said the club’s administrative manager, Karen Brown, resigned at the beginning of April. He said her resignation “had nothing to do with Brian, to my knowledge.”

In the meantime, White said he and his parents—the club’s co-owners— are moving forward with several improvements, including an expansion of the outdoor deck behind the venue.

“All together our expansion will be 5,300-square-feet and it’s covered over the water,” he said. “We’re also doing some additional curb appeal, landscaping, additional paver work in front of the patio and painting to keep it fresh.”

White said there have been changes in the kitchen, too.

“We created a menu that allowed us to have more prompt service,” he said.

Mikael Audebert, COWP executive director and senior executive producer, said the changes at Mr. Sisters will not affect their COWP fundraising event, a June 3–4 concert at Mr. Sisters featuring Kelly Rowland and Debra Cox. “We are going to use venue generously offered to us by Mr. Sisters when we started planning event three months ago,” Audebert said. | l |

LGBTs get representation within the VA jamie hyman Orlando | For the first time, LGBT organizations were invited to participate in the May 6 Orlando Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center’s Diversity Day, an annual event with tents, tables and food that celebrates different cultures within the VA. This representation is part of a larger integration between the VA and the local LGBT community.

Kerri Griffin-Edenfield is a therapist at the clinic and has become the first ever LGBT special emphasis program manager, serving as the liaison who is bringing forth these gay-friendly partnerships within the VA. She has lead a gay-focused veteran’s group for almost a year, and the membership has grown from one person to 10 regular participants.

“It was a fight to get this group at the VA, because of confidentiality,” GriffinEdenfield said.

But she said the specialized support is much needed.

“As one of my vets said, they’re a minority of a minority of a minority,” she

said.

On June 3, the LGBT representation will become even stronger when the VA hosts a community event featuring resources and speakers that will be open to veterans and staff.

“It’s not just talk about LGBT veterans, but the community as a whole,” Griffin-Edenfield said.

Speakers include city commissioner Patty Sheehan, ECHO Interaction Group CEO Carlos Carbonell, The Center executive director Randy Stephens and openly gay veteran Mark Cady, who is also the Orlando Sales Director for Watermark.

Griffin-Edenfield calls the event “a big deal” and said, “I’m really excited because we’ve never done this before.”

She said she deals with a lot of gay and lesbian veterans, plus two transgender vets in her six years at the VA. “I’m happy because I think it’s a population that’s been overlooked, and it’s not just the veterans, it’s for people applying for work [at the VA],” she said.

Lakeland | For too long, Polk County has been viewed as a small town with narrow-minded views. But according to Freddie De Jesus, that stereotype just isn’t accurate, and he hopes to prove that with the brand new Polk Pride 2011, unleashing a calendar of events beginning June 3.

Dr. Jesus, the owner of Just Fierce Productions said the idea for a Polk Pride materialized after he put on the successful Miss Gay Lakeland pageant.

“As a result we had a discussion with members of the community about Pride,” De Jesus said. “A lot of people said they wished people would make a big deal about Pride in our own county. Many of us will drive and celebrate Gay Days in Orlando, Pride on 7th in Ybor and St. Pete Pride. That’s not a problem, but Polk County is invisible. No one knows about our community, in general.”

So the seeds for Polk Pride 2011 were sown and so far the reaction has been very positive, according to De Jesus. Several large businesses have come on board to support the events—including the Historic Polk Theater, which will host two large parties on June 13 and 14.

“Everyone asks if this is a parade— it’s not,” De Jesus said. “We don’t have the authority to do that yet but we can sure throw some parties. We’re actually throwing 15 parties and our two final

parties will be in the theater. But we will be all over Lakeland.”

The events encompassing Polk Pride 2011 are as diverse as the community it hopes to represent. Cabaret shows at Club Pulse, a fashion show at Lake Mirror Tower, family expos and drag shows are just part of the 11-day celebration. Each event has different entry charges and VIP passes are available. Funds collected benefit Polk Pride Alliance, which will organize the 2012 event.

“We hope to raise enough money this year to create a festival on the lake with art and vendors,” De Jesus said. “There are a lot of people already involved and support has been great.”

So far, no politicians have come on board in support of Polk Pride 2011, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. De Jesus said he plans on approaching commissioners and Lakeland’s mayor to ask them to come support some of the events.

“The message of Pride is to show that we are a viable part of the community,” De Jesus said. “We’re not just about the bars, and that’s why we’re holding so many things outside of clubs. But we also understand that Pulse is a large part of our community and they have come on board to support us in a big way.”

St. Petersburg College adds LGBT inclusiveness to its policies steve blanchard St. Petersburg | St. Petersburg College has added sexual orientation and gender identity to its diversity policy, less than two weeks after former SPC president Carl Kuttler Jr.’s son—openly gay Carl Kuttler III—died after leaping off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge April 29.

Bill Law, who was named president of SPC last year to replace the older Kuttler, said he noticed the college’s diversity policy “does not represent the openness that characterizes St. Petersburg College.”

It was unclear if the move was directly related to the former St. Pete Pride Board member’s suicide.

After Law’s request, the board approved the addition of both gender identity and sexual orientation without discussion on May 3. The Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County were quick to offer praise.

“This is a positive and important decision that was made by St. Petersburg

College,” said Stonewall Democrats of Pinellas County President Rick Boylan, “LGBT individuals, especially students and employees, can now be assured that St. Petersburg College will not tolerate discrimination based on either sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Boylan added that SPC made a strong statement by including gender identity in its updated diversity policy.

“It’s refreshing to see such an important and strong statement from St. Petersburg College,” he added.

The move brings hope to LGBT organizations that other entities will embrace diversity and inclusiveness in policies, according to Boylan.

“It’s important that organizations, especially educational institutions, specifically state they prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression,” Boylan said.

According to William Harper, Executive Director of the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas, participation in the 2011 Dining Out For Life event was up this year. While totals weren’t immediately available, Harper did say that 17 more restaurants participated this year on both sides of Tampa Bay. Several ambassadors broke records with raffles and drawings, which accompanied the 25% of each dining bill donated by participating restaurants. Totals should be available by the end of May.

St. Petersburg | The St. Pete Men’s Chorus is undergoing a reforming process, according to managing artistic director Thomas Guthrie.

The group, which had a brief run back in 2006, has about a half dozen members currently and holds weekly rehearsals. The SPMC is currently seeking singers who would enjoy being part of a performance group.

Guthrie said he hopes to have at least 12 regular members before the group does any public performances and he had hoped to perform an informal concert at St. Pete Pride.

However, realizing that may be optimistic, he has set his sights on holiday performances later this year and throughout 2012.

“You don’t have to be an experienced singer,” said Gutherie. “The auditions aren’t that rigorous. As someone with 33 years of music education experience, I’m a lot more open to people with less experience. Of course, I want to make sure a candidate can carry a tune, but you don’t even have to be experienced at reading music. In fact, we plan to help those who can’t [read music] with some classes.”

Guthrie recently retired after many years of singing experience and choral direction in the school system. He was discussing the “why’s” and “why not’s” with some of St. Petersburg’s community movers and shakers, and was directed to Mark Ebenhoch, one of the original founders. The two got together and exchanged backgrounds and stories.

Guthries says that first they got excited. Then they got the other two original founders in on the action and the chorus was reborn.

Male choral groups are not exactly a new concept to the area. In 1996, there were four choruses in the Tampa Bay area, two female and two male, each unique in that the voices raised were, largely, those of the LGBT community. Enthusiastic singers quickly spread word of a new proposed chorus as an alternative to choruses “across the bay.”

Serious organization began in July 2006, with Daniel Kiermaier as SPMC’s first Business Manager.

With Ebenhoch as President, Clayton Hogue as Treasurer and Sue Johansen, a realtor in the Pinellas area offering to take minutes, the chorus started gaining steam.

The group asked a talented local musician who taught music, to join the board as Music Director. Mele`, a noted local pianist and choral director of one of the women’s groups, became the accompanist. The Metropolitan Community Church at 5th Street North in St. Petersburg offered rehearsal space.

After nine months of hard work trying to accumulate a repertoire, SPMC participated in its first “community concert” and performed at the Palladium to a standing ovation. The group was successful in holding several fundraisers with astonishing results and offers of support. Then, the three founders found it necessary to step away and allow the chorus members an opportunity to “run the show the way they wanted to run the show.”

Unfortunately, the chorus imploded and faded away in a couple of months.

The “rebooted” SPMC was helped along financially with donations from a holiday party held by Brian Longstreth, a founding member of St. Pete Pride. With a donation to the group, start up money was made available.

According to Guthrie, the mission of the St. Petersburg Men’s Chorus is to entertain, educate, unite and uplift audiences and members through music that is distinguished for its innovation, diversity and artistic excellence. While Guthrie anticipates that most of the singers will be gay, the group is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation.

Guthrie said the newly reformed chorus will perform a wide variety of music, from show tunes, to popular music. He hopes the group can perform an important community outreach for the entire gay community “Music can really bring people together,” said Guthrie. “It is my sincere hope that we can use the chorus and the music it performs to change the hearts and minds of those who may not have a good impression of the gay community.”

Harvey Milk Festival details take shape staff report Sarasota | The Second Annual Harvey Milk Festival is set up to be bigger and better than its debut last year when it takes over the Rosemary District May 20-22. The festival is aligned with ceremonies and celebrations across the nation to raise awareness about LGBT civil rights on state and federal levels.

Admission is free.

The weekend long celebration begins at 7 p.m., Friday, May 20, with an art exhibit showcasing themes of equality. The art will be displayed at The Red Panty Press where Ciera Galbraith will serve as curator. Galbraith has

worked for more than two years as Gallery Director of The University of Florida Reitz Union Art Gallery. In her free time, she loves graphic artwork, photography, and playing music with her band, Cassolette.

On Saturday, May 21, a street festival featuring vendors and speakers begins at 2 p.m. in the 1300 block of 5th Street. The festival runs until 10 p.m.

Among those invited to speak at the annual Harvey Milk Day Festival is Joe Saunders of Equality Florida. Saunders has a background in grassroots activism and state-level organizing and serves as the organization’s Field Director.

Author Todd Kachinski-Kottmeier is also scheduled to appear. Last year, he served as emcee and guest speaker and told the festival he left a changed man. This year the prolific writer took initiative in the Stop Bullying campaign while writing “The Official Drag Handbook” and manning the charitable site Million Hugs.com.

Festival organizer Shannon Fortner told Watermark that she hopes to attract LGBTs and those outside the LGBT community to the weekend-long celebration.

Flagship Out of the Closet opens in Ft. Lauderdale Staff Report Fort Lauderdale | Activists, lookalikes and even a celebrity were on hand for the May 7 opening of the newest Out of the Closet thrift store, benefiting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and the group’s HIV/AIDS patients statewide.

It’s the 22nd Out of the Closet and South Florida’s fourth, located on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The facility is also the first location that AHF built from the ground up, revitalizing the site of a former abandoned gas station.

Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney and his wife Jan were on hand to dedicate the store in memory of Elizabeth Taylor. The actress spent much of her life advocating for people with HIV/AIDS, and the store will also serve as a testing center.

“Ninety-six cents of every dollar raised through our Sunrise store will benefit

AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s prevention, treatment and education programs in Broward County and statewide,” said Michael Kahane, Bureau Chief, Southern Region for AIDS Healthcare Foundation in a media release.

Community members can help raise funds by donating merchandise, using the in-store pharmacy, shopping or simply donating to AHF. The pharmacy is a fullservice facility staffed with pharmacists who specialize in HIV/AIDS medications, plus general pharmacy services.

Man accused of attacking gay man denied bail Staff Report Davie, Fla. | A Davie man accused of attacking an openly gay man is facing hate crime charges. John William Koontz, 62, was denied bail May 3.

Koontz was arrested May 2 after he allegedly approached Miguel “Angel” Rodriguez, 46, outside a CVS and beat him while shouting insults and gay slurs. CVS employees separated the men, and rescuers took Rodriguez to Memorial Hospital Pembroke where he was treated and released the same night.

In addition to the hate crime, Koontz is

also charged with aggravated battery.

According to Davie police, Rodriguez works as a security guard at Everglades Mobile Home Park and both men live there.

The attack was allegedly the result of an ongoing dispute between the suspect and the victim.

To label an assault a hate crime, investigators and prosecutors must prove the victim was targeted because of race, color, sexual orientation or other personal factors. A hate-crime designation is added to other criminal charges, elevates them to felony status and may mean stiffer penalties under Florida law. | l |

Deportation of partner in same-sex couple halted wire report Newark, N.J. | A dancer from Venezuela who legally married an American man in a same-sex ceremony last year had his deportation placed on hold this month, one day after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder set aside an immigration ruling in a similar case.

Henry Velandia, 27, a professional salsa dancer from Caracas, wants to be allowed to remain in the U.S. as the spouse of U.S. citizen Josh Vandiver, a 29-year-old graduate student at Princeton University. The couple resides in New Jersey but were married last year in Connecticut, one of the states where same-sex marriage is legal.

On May 6, an immigration judge in Newark adjourned Velandia’s case until December, citing Holder’s decision from a day earlier.

In that case, Holder set aside a Board of Immigration Appeals ruling allowing the deportation to Ireland of Paul Wilson Dorman,

a gay man illegally in the U.S. who celebrated a civil union in New Jersey with his male partner.

In Velandia’s case, his visitor visa expired, and he was unable to obtain a green card, or permanent resident status, through an employer. Because the federal government doesn’t recognize the couple’s marriage, Vandiver was not able to sponsor Velandia, as a heterosexual person could sponsor a spouse.

“It’s amazing, I’m in shock,’’ Velandia said of the judge’s decision. “I am thankful I can still be with my husband, and keep this fight going.’’

Attorney Lavi Soloway, who is representing Velandia and is the founder of an advocacy group Immigration Equality, said he was pleased with the New Jersey judge’s decision, and with Holder’s move.

“The attorney general’s decision yesterday is an extraordinary development; it’s historic, it’s the first time any attorney general has intervened in an immigration case involving a bi-national same-sex couple,’’ Soloway said. |  |

Brazil top court recognizes same-sex civil unions wire report Sao Paulo, Brazil | Brazil’s high court has ruled that same-sex civil unions must be recognized, a decision welcomed as a watershed by gay activists who also hope it will cool rising violence against homosexuals in Latin America’s most populous nation.

The ruling, however, stopped short of legalizing gay marriage in Brazil, which has more Roman Catholics than any other country.

The Catholic Church fought the measure.

In a vote May 5, all but one of the 11 Supreme Court justices backed civil union rights for same-sex couple. One justice abstained.

The court ruled that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as heterosexual pairs when it comes to alimony, retirement benefits of a partner who dies and inheritances, among other issues.

In Latin America, gay marriage is legal only in Argentina and Mexico City.

“This is a historic moment for all Brazilians, not just homosexuals. This judgment will change everything for us in society—and for the better,’’ said Marcelo Cerqueira with the gay rights group Grupo Gay da Bahia. ``Gays, lesbians and transsexuals will be recognized as being more human. We’ll be more accepted by having our rights honored.’’

Grupo Gay da Bahia said in a recent report that 260 gays were murdered in 2010 in Brazil, up 113% from five years ago, including recent high-profile cases that made headlines.

Lil B Receives Threats For ‘I’m Gay’ Album Title

State appeals court judge Barbara Lenk, an out lesbian, will be the first openly gay justice on Massachusetts’ highest court.

The Governor’s Council voted 5-3 on May 4 to approve Lenk for the Supreme Judicial Court. She will now be a member of the court that issued a landmark ruling in 2003 making Massachusetts the first state to allow same-sex marriage. Lenk married her long-time partner after that vote.

Rapper Lil B has received death threats after announcing April 16 at Coachella music festival that his next album would be titled I’m Gay. “People been hitting me up like, ‘I’m gonna bash your head in,’ ‘you faggot,’ ‘I’m gonna kill you,’” Lil B said. “A lot of my supporters have turned on me.” In response to allegations that the title was a gimmick, Lil B told MTV, “I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that’s why I’m doing it.”

that’s warranted. But I want to express my admiration for Jacobs, and my growing confidence in her leadership.

In a short time, and in the context of issues critical to the LGBT community, Jacobs has displayed something precious in political discourse: a willingness to listen, consider different perspectives and (gasp!) change her mind.

I interviewed Jacobs last August. Back then, her opinions on LGBT matters were confused and uninspiring.

The glory of “I struggle with the idea of requirements the open mind for private employers, especially in this economy,” she said about a rights ordinance.

“I don’t think we need more regulation, so I would set that aside in the ‘largely undecided’ camp.”

“I’m still wrestling with the issue,” she said. “Philosophically I think we should do it. But I want to know the cost, and I want to ensure these are bona fide relationships.”

Jacobs clearly considered these matters, even though they were likely not critical to her election. She spoke with her staff, local LGBT activists like Mary Meeks, and I suspect her family—she has four children with ages ranging from Will & Grace to Glee.

The result: clarity and a willingness to lead. Contrast Jacobs’ earlier statements with this one following passage of partner benefits last month.

“I believe this policy is fair,” she said. “All people deserve to be treated compassionately. eresa Jacobs was elected Mayor I think tolerance is something this community of Orange County last November. can do better.”

Can there be any doubt where his internal debate will lead, or whether it will be on the right side of history?

Jacobs is on a similar journey, and I think she would be the first to admit that. I disagree with her “my way or the highway” handling of an arts center whose time has come. But the steps she has taken on LGBT issues give

me confidence that she is the right kind of leader for our community—one centered enough to reconsider positions previously taken, and strong enough to value what is right over what is pragmatic.

During our interview, I asked Jacobs how she would counsel a gay teen with disapproving parents.

“Sometimes in life our beliefs are challenged,” she said. “Most of us will use that as an opportunity to reassess our belief systems. When faced with this, most parents will choose to love their child and recognize that maybe they’ve been wrong. It won’t be easy, and it may take them a little time, but my advice would be to have the conversation.” | l |

O

rlando | Early on in the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, the gay factor started to become a topic of discussion. Was Fringe too gay? Why do people always want to see the gay stuff?

It’s a fair question since a majority of the runaway hits at Fringe have had some homo element to them. It stands to reason: while Orlando does peek out of its homogenized shell here and there (and more and more, thankfully), for two decades this festival has provided our citizens with a once-a-year opportunity to let their Freak Flag fly. Who better to show them how that flag dance is done than the LGBT community?

This look into “what’s gay at Fringe” will inevitably be left wanting; it’s a near impossible task to report everything that’s gay in this year’s Fringe. You’ll see the work of people from our community all over Fringe— like Brendan O’Connor’s prop work in Miss Sammy Bakes a Cake or Michael Horn musical directing PANDEMONIUM for Greater Orlando Actors Theatre—and the omnipresent Lady Gaga will be making an appearance at Fringe (with Gov. Scott, no less), with someone’s hand up her ass in an adult puppet show, Punch & Judy.

Maybe it would be best to think of what follows as the gayest of this year’s Fringe; then again, we just can’t be certain.

Fringe organizers ruffled a few feathers this year when they allowed Dewey Chaffee to apply for Fringe without announcing the title to his show, contrary to Fringe policy. (Naturally any complaining was done over pitchers of beer at Paradise as opposed to any formal complaint.) The reason for secrecy became clear in March when Dewey announced this year he would be playing Winifred, the heretofore thought deceased wife of his infamous character Wayburn Sassy. You’ll have to catch Winifred…That Bitch! to catch a glimpse of Mrs. Sassy and find out how she came to be not so dead after all.

Suckers / Big Queer Hoottenanny Miss Sammy Bakes a Cake Tod Kimbro may not technically qualify

Unsurprising for Fringe, Chaffee won’t be

the only man in a dress. Miss Sammy (Sam Singhaus) returns to Fringe with Miss Sammy Bakes a Cake. Having tried most every form of entertainment, including Broadway, Miss Sammy stumbles upon something she hasn’t done: the cooking-variety-talk show format.

Conceived by Margaret Nolan (Lilly and Lila’s Lovely Lesbian Hour) the show is written by John Ryan (My Pal Bette), who also appears, with additional material by Singhaus. A bevy of special guests will include Mark Baratelli, Carol Lee, and Rob Ward’s Pepe.

Squatters When Jeremy Seghers does Fringe, you can bet it will be a little different. One year he teamed with the talented and demure Heather Henson to tell a fable about mountain top removal using puppets, another year he presented a performance art piece in which nothing happened—literally—which, in some cases, pissed off audience members. To this year’s fest, Seghers brings Squatters, a 30 minute improvised sitcom which, among many other things, features out actor Landon Price playing a gay actor who plays a straight character.

Heaven Help Us! In the past, Jeff Jones has publicly made fun of writers who pen sequels, so it is ironic that he is returning to Fringe with the third—and we’re promised the final—installment in his popular Hell series, Heaven Help Us! The comedy reteams Doug Ba’aser, Elizabeth Murff, Kevin Bee, and Jones himself as Satan; added to the cast are Josh Paul and Fringe favorite Janine Klein, as Adam and Eve respectively. Everything Must Go (Starring Will Ferrell, Michael Peña, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern)

The young teenager Lakemeier is the son of Thiry, the kowtowing mayor of a small Dutch town overrun by Nazis. The clumsy kid is nonplussed by his father’s sly, deferential treatment of the SS troops in order to keep the starving berg peaceful.

Lakemeier is both protected by his father’s position and aided by his own sneakiness; he and his pals steal Nazi artifacts. So, when given a task behind enemy lines, the boy jumps at the chance. While completing his covert operation, Lakemeier finds an injured British soldier (Campbell Bower) and sets to protect him.

Can you already sense there is a lot going on in the film? Yet most of this tale feels like a mash-up of other, much better WWII coming-of-age films. Noble Lakemeier is good, but he cannot hold together a story where the dad is both wimpy and sneaky, and the Nazis vacillate between vicious and kind. Soon, the sullen sister is asked for help, the Nazis start torturing poor old dad, and then it all devolves into a ridiculous chase sequence. By that point, Winter in Wartime has lost us all in the woods around that little Dutch village.

ne of the nicest things Hollywood occasionally does is allow actors to stretch. In the humane comedy Everything Must Go, Will Ferrell takes a more dramatic approach to his famous jerk-wad characters (Anchorman, Talladega Nights). In truth, the shift is more in tone— Ferrell is still unpleasant here—but it’s enough to make an enjoyable little film.

Ferrell is an inveterate suburban alcoholic. For years, his addiction hasn’t affected his success in corporate sales.

However, a nasty bender at a convention gets him fired and separated from his wife.

She leaves all his possessions on their lawn.

At first, Ferrell is belligerent; he intends to live in his front yard. But frank, tough love and support from his friends (Peña, Hall, Dern) start to break down the drunk’s stubbornness.

Comedic performers like Ferrell are often also secretly competent dramatic actors (as Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tom Hanks have proven.) The special effects vary in quality; there’s just no way to make Thor’s Valhalla-like homeland, and “rainbow bridge” time travel not look a little gay-fabulous. Worst of all, the story’s timeline doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. However, if you can turn off the logical, quality-

stevie nicks: a fairy tale Rock legend on gays getting her, Glee controversy and first solo album in a decade

en years have passed since Stevie Nicks released her last solo album, but she’s still the same gay-loved goddess of earthy rock she built her legend on. The new release, In Your Dreams, is exactly how the gypsy queen left us—with that uniform sense of mystical otherworldliness that’s made Nicks a go-her-own-way virtuoso since her days with Fleetwood Mac. White horses, vampire tales and ethereal love parables all seep into this set, Nick’s first all-new studio project after reuniting with Fleetwood Mac for 2003’s Say You Will.

Nicks recently spoke with us about taking a trip to “the magical world of fairies and angels,” the dress drag queens love, and how her own music motivated her to lose a dozen pounds.

WATERMARK: Why did it take so long to release another solo album?

STEVIE NICKS: Even though I haven’t made another solo record in 10 years, I’ve been making music solid since Trouble in ShangriLa. I came off the road from 135 shows in 2005 with Fleetwood Mac and was going to make a record, and the business people around me said, “We don’t think you should do it because the music business is in chaos”—you know, with internet piracy, which was really hitting us in the face in 2005—“and it’s just going to be a really emotional pull on you.

We don’t think you should do it. Tour while you can, do big shows and sell lots of tickets, that’s what you can do.” And I just was stupid enough to kind of go, “OK.” When did you wise up?

At the end of the Fleetwood Mac tour in 2009. We were in Australia, and I wrote the “Moonlight” song [from In Your Dreams] there, and when I got done with that song—I started it in Melbourne and I finished it in Brisbane—there was a piano. I stood up and I said to my assistant, “I’m ready to make a record now.”

The concept of the video for the first single,

“Secret Love,” is intriguing—it merges your older self with your younger self. How do you feel now versus then?

That’s why the little girl that’s in the video, Kelly, is wearing the green outfit that was my first colored outfit made in 1976. I wanted Kelly to be the 25-year-old Stevie, and then there’s the older Stevie. That song was written in 1975, so I wanted the spirits to blend. That’s why you see her leaving the white horse and then you see me leaving the white horse and then we’re both together, because in my dreams as a little girl that white horse was very important.

[While shooting the video] we looked down out of my bedroom window and saw this horse—and there was a fog machine on and the actual sun was coming through all the evergreens in my backyard—and I was like, “That can’t possibly be real.” If that horse had a horn you would’ve thought, “Okay, I’ve died and gone to fairyland.”

Let’s talk about those fairies, because you know a lot of gays adore you.

I know. I’m glad. All these visions that I see, I love when people get them. Sometimes people don’t get it, you know, and I love when people do, because I think that everybody needs to move into that magical world sometimes. A lot of people do not ever move into the magical land of fairies and angels and they just live in the hardcore miserable world that this world is right now. It’s chaotic, horrible, there’s nothing we can do—it’s such a bummer.

When did you know you were a gay icon?

When “Night of a Thousand Stevies” [a New York City-based salute to Stevie Nicks featuring impersonators] started happening 20 years ago, it was a clue. And you know, I always felt it was because I was not a fashion statement like Madonna was. I’m very different than her; she’s very chameleonesque. They do such great versions of all these songs; the original writers cannot fault them. They’re magnificent—every one of them. And she goes, “Nobody except you has ever come down and told us that they thought we were doing a good job.” And I thought that was so sad. Very, very disrespectful.

Right. You stay very true to yourself, and I think a lot of gay people can admire that because we strive for that, too.

I do, and I think that brings a little bit of comfort to my audience. I still have the two girls singing with me, because I love them and they’re my dear friends. But I could’ve been changing background singers every year, and I chose to stay with Sharon [Celani] and Lori [Nicks] because the sound of the three of us is comforting to “We can all stay my audience. akeland | “Working for Rolling Stone I sort of built who I am,” photographer Annie Leibovitz once observed during a Time magazine interview.

“I learned, at a very young age, that what I did mattered.”

Photographs are magic in their ability to freeze a moment in time. A gifted photographer can translate that moment in an image that will live within our psyche for longer than we are aware. Consider a Rolling Stone cover shot by Leibovitz named “Best Magazine Cover from the Past 40 Years” by the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2005. It depicts John Lennon, vulnerably naked, wrapped around the love of his life, Yoko Ono. You can picture it in your mind, no doubt. Five hours after this iconic picture was taken, Lennon was assassinated. Rolling Stone published the cover without a headline, without words save their name.

What Annie Leibovitz does, matters.

Lakeland’s Polk Museum of Art (PMA) is hosting “Annie Leibovitz: Women,” a touring exhibit of more than 60 photographs that originated as a book project. The book, Women, was published by Random House in

1999—the exhibit premiered at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. the same year—with an essay by intellectual Susan Sontag, Leibovitz’s partner from 1989 until Sontag’s death in 2004.

“One thing that happened with the book is Annie made it clear to anyone that she was shooting, that she was doing this book project. She wanted any kind of assignment that she could get of women to be used in magazine or in advertising, but that she could also use secondary short, or other shots, for the book,” said Tim Hossler, former in-house art director for the Annie Leibovitz Studio, speaking at the PMA opening on April 2.

To illustrate his point, Hossler presented a photo of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in a Got Milk? ad shot by Leibovitz, then a different shot from the same photo shoot. Both photos are arresting, though the first has an air of milk mustachioed whimsy, and each has intelligibly different purpose: one to sell a product, the other to glimpse the strength of these beautiful women. A photographic series of showgirls Leibovitz shot for The New Yorker served as the basis for Women. A photo in color pictured the

trusted relationship with the Clinton White House to the point that she turned down a gig to shoot Monica Lewinsky. A similar relationship has developed with the Obamas; she shot the official family portrait.

In 1989, Leibovitz was asked to photograph Susan Sontag for a bookcover, and the two fell in love. Ms. magazine cofounder Gloria Steinem remembers initially being surprised by the pairing, then feeling it made perfect sense, Leibovitz had a different reaction: “What the hell is she doing with me?” The two remain together—interestingly they never lived together, but had apartments within view of each other—until Sontag’s passing from leukemia. Due to the so-called death tax, taking over Sontag’s estate sent Leibovitz into a much publicized debt, forcing her to sell negatives (among other extremes), and making her a distressing example of marriage inequity in our country.

Jones’ jibe might require a bit of back story: in 2000, The Oops Guys famously fought against censorship when the Orlando Police Department tried to stop their production of The Naked Guy due to “public nudity.” After a media frenzy, the final verdict came down to Mayor Glenda Hood who determined that no laws were broken, nudity in theatre is a protected art form. The show went on, the clothes went off, and lucky patrons got to see a really hot guy nude in the final scene of a hilarious show.

Bitches marks the return of Fringe favorites Dennis Giacino and Fiely Matias, The Oops Guys, who last appeared in 2005. After that appearance they toured their show Lougnezilla around the United States, Canada, Sydney, Prague, and Singapore, before settling down in New York City in 2007.

“We’ve always felt that Orlando was the perfect place to open Bitches. The princess culture here (which the show lampoons) is so ingrained in the Orlando region,” said the duo, who are coincidentally celebrating their 20th year at The Oops Guys. “We’re so excited to be back home—the Orlando Fringe has always been a fave of ours!” | l |

tampa bay overheard Sawmill becomes official co-op For the first time, an all-gay co-op has been established in the United States. According to the Sawmill Campground in Dade City, the facility became the first gay co-op community on April 28 when documents were signed to turn ownership over to the destination’s 50,000 members and residents. Shareholders purchased the 120-acre resort in Pasco County from a straight business owner for $4.2 million. The resort will still offer access to visitors at its 270 camping sites—including cabins, tent sites and RV parking—and will now operate as a Not For Profit entity.

Pride on 7th sees growth in year two In just one year, Pride on 7th saw amazing growth. Nearly 25 vendors set up around Centro Ybor on Saturday, April 30, while a slew of performers and speakers took to the stage. Most notable were speeches given

by Tampa’s new mayor, Bob Buckhorn, and Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner. The day started with an early-

morning anti-bullying march in Ybor City where Gay/Straight Alliances and members of Hillsborough County Schools participated.

A noted difference in this year’s event compared to its inaugural event in 2010 was the location. The outdoor atmosphere seemed to please both attendees and vendors—most of which were within eyesight of the stage. Pride on 7th continued on into the night when theme parties took over GaYbor’s popular night spots. Money raised through donations and entry fees were donated to Metro Wellness and Community Center, Equality Florida and the GaYbor District Coalition.

Australian pop star Kylie Minogue brought a scaled down version of her epic “Aphrodite Les Folies” tour to Orlando’s Hard Rock Live May 8. Along with it, a legion of inventively costumed dancers, including scantily clad Spartans and Romans that—for more than two hours—writhed and sang in exquisite choreography. Minogue concocted a splashy, glittering and utterly stylish alternative reality that literally brought fans to tears. “You’ve been about to cry since I first saw you,” Minogue told fan and local actor, T.J. Headdress Goes Over the Top Grab your top hat and whip. Hope and Help is planning a three ring circus. The non-profit organization announced that the theme for the 22nd annual Headdress Ball will be “One Night Under The Big Top.” This year’s spectacle will take place Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Hilton Orlando. Headdress Ball is Hope and Help’s largest event with more than 900 attendees each year and has raised over $3 million for HIV/AIDS prevention and care over the past 22 years.

ummer is here and that means it is time to break out the swimwear. As a rule, men’s swimwear fashion does not move quickly.

In this issue of Watermark, several new fashions sold at Urban Body are displayed on our models, who posed at the Postcard Inn on St. Pete Beach.

The hotel is the site of Fire & Ice, the St. Pete Pride weekend party presented by Watermark Media and AlandChuck.travel.

But there are some major developments this summer that you should know if you want to remain on the forefront of fashion.

Board shorts remain the preferred cut for guys.

But the guy on top of this year’s trends is wearing a board that is a little shorter and slimmer in the leg.

What prompted the recent relocation of your store?

The opportunity to reinvent the business, move into a larger space, offer women’s clothing and have better street frontage. It was a win, win, win, win.

Your clothing selection is amazing and you always look so put together.

To what do you attribute your fashion sense?

I never got to choose my clothing growing up. With five boys, each a year apart, I always got the hand-me-downs from what my older brothers chose. When I was finally able to buy my own clothes I was very conscious of developing my own style.

Can even the unfashionable among us learn fashion sense?

You can pick up things here and there, but overall, fashion sense is one of those things you either have or don’t have. That’s where we come in.

With your help, this issue of Watermark showcases some of the latest trends in swimwear. But what other fashions do you see embodying

the LGBT community this summer?

Simple, classic and clean. Look for henley and notch neck tees and slim fit denim. Twills pants will make a big comeback this fall.

Besides running Urban Body, you’ve been active in many community causes. Is there a current cause that’s near and dear to your heart right now?

Pride & Passion at the Tampa Museum of Art. We are in our sixth year and the TMA has helped bring downtown Tampa alive.

The location of your store (and its predecessor) is in the very gay SoHo area of Tampa. Is that on purpose?

SoHo is the best neighborhood in Tampa, gay or otherwise. I love all the restaurants, bars, shops and cool people. We were among the first to move in and help build the neighborhood.

Is there a difference between fashion and “gay fashion?”

Not anymore. There is no difference between what our gay and our straight customers select to wear. We didn’t mainstream ourselves. I think they realized that we had it going on when it comes to fashion!

If you could pick a look or style from the past that you’d like to see make a comeback, what would it be and why?

WATERMARK: What was the motivation behind you opening a high-fashion clothing boutique?

SCOTT MOORE: I got tired of hunting in malls for nice athletic fit clothing that was fashion forward. And, I was ready to get off the road after 12 years of covering Asia, Europe, South America and North America for the gas turbine industry.

Cool off on hot shores Florida’s LGBT-friendly beaches sp a n t h e e n t i r e s t a t e steve blanchard

T

he cool weather is finally gone and the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic are finally warming up to an inviting temperature.

But for LGBTs looking for summer fun on Florida’s sandy shores, sometimes more is required than just a postcard-perfect view. We need like-minded crowds and welcoming cities.

According to Florida Beaches Guide, maintained by Tsavo Media out of Canada, LGBT businesses and resident populations have major influences when it comes to how gay friendly a beach may be.

Of course, with nearly 1,200 miles of shoreline, naming every beach would be impossible in this space. However, here are a few top LGBT Florida beaches based on Tsavo Media’s guide:

South Beach

With trendy restaurants, arguably the best Art Deco architecture on the continent and non-stop nightlife, South Beach is a must-visit beach for LGBTs looking for that special something on the sand. The popular tourist destination also pulls in its fair share of celebrities, trendy youth and upper crust LGBTs with money to burn.

Smathers Beach

There is an ongoing argument that Key West isn’t as gay as it once was—but that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have massive LGBT appeal.

The wildly popular Smathers Beach is one of the island’s best known beach destinations. It has shallow, warm waters, virtually no undertow and is surrounded by Caribbean-Mexican flavor. Each summer the beach is swarmed with LGBT locals and vacationers.

Haulover Beach

Of course Florida’s only legal nude beach would be an LGBT destination, but remember, it’s not just the LGBTs that enjoy total body tanning.

Haulover Beach in Miami is one of the most beautiful and frequentlyused clothing-optional beaches in the country, let alone Florida. The beach proudly declares its nude beach status and perimeters with signs. Beautiful, laidback and accepting of everyone, naturists of all genders, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age and physical build visit this beach. Florida Beaches guide says visitors shouldn’t be

surprised to see more than a thousand sunbathers getting all-over tans along the half-mile stretch of pure white sand. The beach also includes a gay nude section and a designated area for nude volleyball.

Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors are both weekend destinations for Central and West Florida LGBTs. But the city of Fort Lauderdale has an unofficial “gay beach” that is near several LGBT businesses and accommodations. The beach covers more than a block along Sebastian Street, is more laid back than Miami’s offerings and eye candy is a guarantee in the right warm weather.

Pass-A-Grille

Most travel guides refer to Pinellas County’s Pass-A-Grille as a “hidden treasure.” But LGBTs have known about it for years. The stretch of beach near St. Pete Beach has unique shops, an eccentric ambience and a bustling atmosphere in the summer. While the shoreline is small compared to our state’s other big beaches, it’s a great place to hunt for pink shells while checking out wood-framed houses overlooking the gulf.

Sunset Beach

No LGBT beach list would be complete without Sunset Beach. This long stretch of white sandy beach on the tip of Treasure Island is a mile

south of the popular straight bar Caddy’s, which offers plenty of eye candy to passersby. Sunset Beach is the old home to Bedrox, which was a gay beach bar that thrived there in the 1990s. Even though the bar has been replaced with a city-run pavilion, LGBTs gather at the site every warm weekend—and especially on Sundays.

Visitors bring music, drinks and offer a party atmosphere. Or, for those wanting to relax with a book, the vast expanse of beach south toward a jetty offers a quiet respite.

North Lido Beach

For those wanting some privacy on the water, North Lido Beach in Sarasota is a perfect retreat. The beach is so secluded that it used to be a well-known “topless” beach.

Today the half-mile stretch of sand is behind a residential area and is ideal for those romantic strolls with your partner. North Lido is less than a mile away from St. Armands Circle, which offers outdoor shopping and restaurant choices that can complete the perfect day of sun worshipping.

Ponte Vedra Beach

About 20 miles southeast of Jacksonville sets Ponte Vedra Beach, where legend says Spanish adventurer Ponce de Leon first set foot on his quest for the Fountain of Youth. Today the beach is a golfer’s paradise and home to the PGA Tour and the World Golf Hall of Fame. LGBT friendly businesses offer an inviting atmosphere in a historic district rich in Florida’s Spanish heritage. | l |

While gay men had already adopted this suit, it took 007 to make it cool for straight guys to wear this style as well.

Pistol Pete and Sauvage Swimwear do an excellent job in this category.

The new item just hitting retail is the lycra board short. It covers less than a traditional board short but more than a square cut swimsuit. It is, by far, the sexiest style to hit the runway this year.

They are not easy to find at retail yet, so those who are able to find them will be the fashion leaders. But look for this style to hit full stride by next spring!

Another trend that is just beginning is the volley short. This swimmer is styled after the shorts worn by beach volleyball players. With an elastic band, movement is easy and the fit is comfortable.

Skimpy swimsuits have been fading for the guys the past few seasons. The 2-inch racer is dead in the water and will make you stand out like a sore thumb. If you are determined to buy a racer-style suit, the Brazilian style swimsuit is your best option. The Brazilian cut is a cross between a full square cut and a racer cut, with a half-inch side. Swimwear manufacturer, Ca-Rio-Ca, is on the top of their game in this category.

And guys, thongs belong under your pants, not on the beach!

As far as color goes, look for swimwear to follow tee shirt trends by featuring bright colors and neon

“Bold colors are making a big comeback in the Caribbean and South Beach,” says Southwood. So that trend should translate to the rest of the country soon. He adds that if you are not comfortable with color, “black and navy are perennial favorites.”

Plaids are going to be huge this season. They bring back memories of glamorous Hollywood in the age of Rock Hudson and Cary Grant. Traditional hibiscus and Hawaiian tribal prints remain strong as well.

Southwood, who designed the swimsuit on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, says that “for women, triangle and halter tops continue to be the most popular, but with built in padding, and even push-up underwire.”

Summer is a time for hot bodies and fun in the water—but that doesn’t mean you should leave your fashion sense at home. There are plenty of options in 2011 to look hot and fashionable on Florida’s beaches or when you’re lounging by the pool.

Braves coach fined, suspended for anti-gay remarks wire reports Atlanta, Ga. | Major League Baseball has decided to suspend and fine Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McCowell after fans complained about him spouting homophobic slurs and simulating gay sex on the field.

According to reports, a family of four— which included two 9-year-old-girls—claimed McDowell made the remarks toward fans at AT&T Park before “mockingly proceeding to simulate gay sex with a baseball bat.”

McDowell’s unpaid suspension will last two weeks. He was also fined an undisclosed amount of money, Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement May 1.

“Conduct by people associated with MLB that shows insensitivity to others simply cannot and will not be tolerated,” he said.

Superstar attorney Gloria Allred, who

is representing the family, told the website TMZ, “The fact that Coach McDowell will be subjected to an unprecedented two-week suspension, be required to take sensitivity training and be fined, demonstrates that Major League Baseball believes that homophobic slurs, sexually lewd conduct and threatening behavior by coaches or any other person employed at a game in the Major League will not be tolerated.”

For his part, Justin Quinn, the victim of the verbal attack told the site, “I am pleased to see Major League Baseball imposing discipline on Coach McDowell for his actions. I love baseball dearly and my family and I are now looking forward to getting back to the ballpark for another game.”

McDowell himself released a statement that said, “I understand the decision made today by the Commissioner. I am embarrassed by my actions and I plan to give a personal apology to Mr. Quinn and his family.” | l |

Suncoast Softball elections extended to second week Tampa, Fla. | After some debate, the Suncoast Softball League has decided to extend its voting period for board positions an additional week, since its election day fell on Mother’s Day this year.

According to an email sent by league secretary Jason Bagwell, enough teams agreed to allowing the voting to continue into Sunday, May 15, since many players were unable to

participate during the Mother’s Day election.

“We decided it was in the best interest of everyone in the league to have voting occur over two weeks to give everyone the opportunity to participate in the process,” Bagwell said in his letter.

Players in all divisions are encouraged to vote for commissioners, team spirit awards and more on a simple ballot. Ballots will be made available at Woodlawn Fields throughout the day on May 15.

‘It Gets Better’ ad airs during NBA playoffs wire report The “It Gets Better” ad created by Google, which received a lot of attention when it aired during Glee, is being shown during the NBA playoffs. It was unclear how many times the ad aired, but it was shown at halftime of the Chicago-Atlanta game on TNT. The video, which advocates against

bullying, is reaching a demographic heavy with young males by being aired during a basketball games. The ad directly speaks to LGBT youth and the dangers of bullying with messages recorded by celebrities and everyday citizens alike.

Anti-gay lawsuit dismissed in Croatian soccer wire report Zagreb, Croatia | A court has dismissed one of two cases against the president of Croatia’s soccer federation because of his antigay comments.

Vlatko Markovic said last year no gay player will be part of the Croatian national team on his watch because “only healthy people play football.”

A spokesman for the Zagreb county court said that a judge rejected one of the cases against Markovic earlier this month. The hearing for the second suit is in June. The two cases have been filed by separate gay rights groups.

ast week, I journeyed back to my old stomping grounds—New York City. First stop was going with my darling David Drake to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert—a show I had previously seen in London. The second time around, and I loved it in even more. As in London (and Australia), the role of Bernadette is embodied by Tony Shelton, and he gives one of the most touching and nuanced performances I’ve ever seen. Alternately bitchy and poignant, he knows this role inside and out (special kudos to the superb Jeff Metzler who played the Young Bernadette flawlessly at the performance I was at). I adore Will Swenson in everything, and loved him as Mitzi/Tick.

He’s dashing in that leading man way and yet plays the drag moments with unbridled abandon. Of course, my readers are most interested in Nick Adams as Adam/ Felicia. I am so thrilled to report that his performance is a personal triumph. All of Nick’s talent and hard work over the years comes together in a perfect package (so to speak). He gets to show off his athletic yet graceful dancing ability. He’s clearly in touch with his feminine side while

also oozing male sexuality. And—what many of you may not have known—he’s a damn good singer. There are few people as genuinely nice who have also paid their dues and deserve a break. But Nick is one of them, and he more than rises to the occasion.

I have to make a confession—I adore most of the people associated with the Broadway hit Catch Me If You Can. I wondered if I could go in and be unbiased.

And if I didn’t like it, what would I do?

by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is boffo. Although the entire cast is fantastic, it’s really about the two leads. I was looking forward to seeing Aaron Tveit since I was a huge fan of his performance in Next to Normal. Here he’s playing the leading role of Frank Abagnale Jr. as a young conman who’s also quite a showman. He can sing, dance, act, and he ain’t bad to look at. As good as Aaron is, he’s overshadowed by Norbert Leo Butz, who plays FBI agent Carl Hanratty. He stops the show cold night after night with “Don’t Break The Rules,” an expertly delivered display of his awkward dance abilities. This is the show to see for an evening of great entertainment.

For eons, a good friend of mine has been begging me to check out the Chippendales show in Las Vegas. Of course, that’s because he’s their publicist. I’ve met many of the guys at various events and they are incredibly hot. But I always think of the Chips as a “ladies only” show.

However, I’m told that these days quite a few guys attend—both straight and gay.

You’d think they got my attention by being named “Best Male Strip Show in Vegas.” But no, I needed more.
