Orlando | The final numbers are still being tallied, but it looks like Orlando’s LGBT Referral Exchange Development Group (RED) has reached its goal of $200,000 in done deals during its first year of operation. RED is operated by the Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) and launched Jan. 10, 2010. Early numbers show RED members have achieved $210,000 in sales, $105,000 in net profit and 49% closing ratio on referrals given, according to RED group director Jason Holstein. The groups initial success has prompted the creation of RED Group South Orlando and RED Group North will kick off in March.

Holstein said his past experience with networking groups has been uncomfortable. “Before coming out, I always wanted to build relationships and conduct business with members in these groups, but believed that coming out would inhibit my relationship development with certain members in these groups and, consequently, adversely impact my sales,” he said. MBA president Gina Duncan said RED is “a huge value to our members and an important part of MBA Orlando’s future growth plans.” For more information about joining RED Group or MBA Orlando, visit www.MBARed.org or e-mail Jason@ MBAOrlando.org. | l |

Orlando couple tackles project, not presents jamie hyman Orlando | In lieu of packages under the tree, an Orlando couple tackled a project at The Center over the holidays. Ryan Salyer is a Center board member who has been with his partner, Danny Justice, for ten years. “My partner and I decided to do something for The Center instead of doing Christmas presents for each other,” Salyer said. “We decided to redo the lobby and front desk area because when you come in the front door, that’s the first impression you have of The Center, and we wanted it to feel welcome and inviting.” The scope of the project included ripping up the old floor tiles, acid washing the brick they found underneath, putting four coats of finish on the floor, repainting the walls with a new color and flat finish, scraping the popcorn ceilings and new crown molding around the top. The project has been underway since Dec. 23 and the goal is to complete it in time for a Jan. 6 reception for

County Commissioners Linda Stewart and Bill Segal. The only component that won’t be finished is a new front door, which has been ordered but won’t be installed until after the Jan. 6 event. “We’ve been working every day and some days we put in 12 hours,” Salyer said. The couple donated all of the materials and labor, worth close to $2,000. Several volunteers also assisted in the execution of the project.

“We were very excited for them to sacrifice their personal Christmas for the good of The Center,” said The Center’s executive director, Randy Stephens. “It shows how the community is starting to pitch in and realize The Center is something that belongs to everybody.” Salyer said he hopes their work will inspire new improvements projects, and said another board member has already mentioned that he and his partner night renovate a room down the road. He is also inspired, and said they’re getting a bathroom in working order and wants to tackle the kitchen next. “Couples have donated stuff [in the past],

but nothing to this extent,” Stephens said. “They actually were there on hands and knees scrubbing and hanging and being there all hours of the day and night.” Stephens said the difference is dramatic. “Everybody’s noticed it,” he said. “We also remodeled the area where the volunteers operate from and they’re more excited than anybody because it looks so nice and clean. | l |

Police still searching for shooting suspect

Crowd shows up for Longstreth roast

steve blanchard

St. Petersburg | It was literally standing-room only for those attending the roast of Brian Longstreth, a founder of St. Pete Pride and a well-known area realtor. Nearly 70 people were present at the Flamingo Resort’s Blu Room on Jan. 2 to “honor Longstreth for his 50th birthday. Tickets sold to the roast raised money for St. Pete Pride and the American Civil Liberty Union. The idea of the roast came to organizers after Longstreth was voted “Local Celebrity I’d Like to see Roasted in the 2010 Watermark WAVE Awards. “Tonight ain’t all about you, emcee Christine O’Leary told Longstreth, who was seated on stage. “It’s going to get rough and it’s not going to be pretty. So brace yourself. O’Leary and several others shared stories about Longstreth for more than an hour. State Representative Rick Kriseman was even among the roasters, who had the crowd laughing hysterically with his political humor. “When I was asked to come roast and honor St. Petersburg’s silver-haired Rays fan and most popular gay resident, I was thrilled to accept, Kriseman said. “But that’s when I thought we were roasting Charlie Crist.

Tampa | The Tampa Police Department is still searching for the suspect who shot and critically injured a patron of Valentines Nightclub in the early morning hours of Dec. 20. According to police, Juan Pineda of Clearwater left the club on North Armenia Avenue around 3 a.m. with a friend and entered a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was parked in an alley approximately 1,000 feet from the club. “The men noticed several items missing from inside the car and they both exited and walked to the rear of the car, said TPD spokesperson Janelle McGregor. “That’s when an unknown individual approached from the south side of the vehicle and shot [Pineda.] When police arrived, Pineda was laying in the alley. According to McGregor, there was a large crowd nearby when the shooting happened, but very few witnesses have stepped forward. “We are still actively investigating this case, McGregor said. “We’re very disappointed that only one witness came forward when we know there was a crowd of patrons leaving the club. McGregor added that the alley is a popular parking area for patrons of Valentines. Watermark via e-mail after a previous story about the shooting and said that the suspect was not a patron of the bar. He also said that the kind of crime that happened “can happen anywhere to anyone and tying this to Valentines is a very good example of misreporting a story. The police department desagrees, however, and is convinced that several patrons of the club witnessed the shooting and encourages them to step forward with information. “The victim is unable to communicate with us due to his injuries, McGregor said. McGregor added that it did not appear that Pineda was targeted because of his perceived sexual orientation and that the shooting could be directly related to the vehicular burglary. According to McGregor, the Tampa Police were called to Valentines 10 times in 2010 and of those 10, five calls were related to battery. The Dec. 20 incident was the only weapons assault related to the club last year. A return email to O’Rear seeking further comment was not returned by press time and a call to Valentines went unanswered. Anyone with more information on the shooting is asked to call the Tampa Police Department’s non-emergency line at 813-231-6130. | l |

Rev. Perry to visit Trinity MCC

staff report

Sarasota | The man who founded the Metropolitan Community Church will visit the Church of the Trinity for a series of programs highlighting marriage equality in February. The Rev. Troy Perry, who founded the MCC church in his Los Angeles, Calif., home in 1968, performed the first public same-sex wedding in the country in 1969. The following year he filed the first-ever lawsuit seeking legal recognition of samegender marriages. Since retiring in 2005, Perry has toured the world, speaking mostly to MCC churches. He has visited Tampa Bay several times and will headline at the Church of the Trinity the weekend of Feb. 11-13. In a 2007 interview with Watermark, Perry said that the growth of the church took patience and that battling homophobia in all its forms was a larger battle than even he expected.. “When I first started MCC, people just couldn’t get it through their heads,” he said. “People would say that this just had to be a gay person playing church. I think they expected orgies on the alter. I thought, ‘Oh my God, these people are

going to be sadly disappointed.'” Today, nearly 40 years later, more than 300 MCCs have sprung to life in 46 states and on six continents, and same-sex marriage is recognized in a handful of countries, five states and in Washington, D.C. “In the early days, we were definitely working to get out of the business,” Perry said. “But we didn’t know then just how deeply and hostile homophobia is around the world. We definitely have a long history in front of us.” On Feb. 11, the church will honor Perry at the Long Boat Key Club. Tickets for the dinner are $100 and are available by calling the church at 941-355-0847. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, the free “Conversations with Rev. Elder Troy Perry” gives everyone an opportunity to interact with the church founder. And, in Sunday, Feb. 13, Perry will be on hand to celebrate the installation of Trinity’s new Senior Pastor, Rev. Charles Tigard, at the 10:30 a.m. service. For more information, visit TrinityMCC.com. | l |

Involved In an accIdent?

WHY HIRE

AN ATTORNEY? Ronald J. Conte, Esq

I

am sometimes asked why someone injured in an accident should hire an attorney. There are important reasons to consider hiring a competent personal injury attorney as soon as possible if you or a loved one are injured as a result of someone else’s negligence. Being involved in an accident is a difficult and traumatic experience. A personal injury attorney should have the knowledge and experience necessary to help you deal with all of the issues that you will face in the aftermath of the accident. Many times injured persons are not aware of the full extent of their injuries or their rights immediately after an accident takes place. Insurance adjusters or other company representatives may try to settle your claim quickly even before you have a chance to hire an attorney because they know that injured people are often in financial distress and may settle for less than they are entitled to under the law. If you are injured in an accident and settle your case before hiring an attorney you may forfeit important benefits available to you. An important part of your attorney’s job is to make sure that you do not compromise your rights and that you get full compensation for the injuries that you suffered as a result of someone else’s negligence.

An attorney should also work to make sure that you receive all of the medical treatment for the injuries that you suffered in the accident. The process of getting better following an accident can take months, and it is important that your attorney help you receive all of the medical treatment that you need to get you back up on your feet and in the game. Perhaps most importantly, an attorney can work hard to make sure that you are fully compensated by the insurance company for the person or company at fault for all economic and non-economic damages that you suffer as a result of the accident. Under Florida law you may be entitled to compensation for the pain and suffering that you have had to deal with following the accident. It is to your benefit to hire a competent personal injury attorney as soon as possible following an accident in order to make sure that you receive all of the benefits and compensation to which you may be entitled. Don’t let a big company or an insurance adjuster take advantage of you by trying to convince you to settle your case without hiring a lawyer. And one final point to keep in mind, in a personal injury case your attorney will not be paid unless he or she makes a recovery for you. So, there are no out-of-pocket or up-front costs to you. You really do have nothing to lose and, hopefully, a lot to gain when you decide to hire a lawyer. • For more information contact Ron Conte at THE LAW OFFICE OF RONALD J. Wilton Manors, Fla. | The family and friends of suspected murderer Peter Serge Avsenew are having a hard time accepting the fact that their loved one may be a killer. Accused of killing a gay couple in their Wilton Manors home on Dec. 26, 2010, the 26-year-old Flanagan High School graduate, from Hollywood, Fla., is being held without bond on a probation violation. That charge is unrelated to the deaths of Kevin Mark Powell, 47, and Steve Adams, 52, but police say Avesenew is expected to face charges related to their deaths. The bodies of Adams and Powell were found inside their rented home early Sunday, Dec. 26, after one of the victim’s sister called police when her brother didn’t show up at her house for the holidays. The pair met at a Gay Pride march in Cleveland when Powell was 18 years old, a relative told the Sun Sentinel. The men lived together in South Florida for several years, owning a home in Hollywood and then moving to Wilton Manors. Adams was a registered nurse at Jackson Health System and Powell was an interior decorator who set up large displays in department stores, including Macy’s. Relatives and friends of Avsenew were shocked by the accusations of murder. “Peter was like a brother to me, man,” recalled Richard McClendon of Davie, Fla. “I could never imagine him doing anything like that and I surely don’t think he did it.” Farris added that Avsenew was very open about his probationary sentence for grand theft out of Monroe County, and that he was “working on getting his act together, and meeting with his probation officer regularly.” Violating that probation, however, is the preliminary basis for his new arrest and no bond. Formal charges in the double homicide of Powell and Adams are pending. One thing is clear to homicide detectives, though. “It was not a random act or a break in,” said Wilton Manors police Sergeant Chuck Howard. “The victims knew the accused assailant.” Sources confide that detectives are exploring “how and where the men met.” Additionally, police are not saying they have

a confession in hand, though it appears Avsenew may have made admissions to third parties. The arrest also surprised Avsenew’s 21year-old niece, Erica Howard, Peter Avsenew is from Sarasota, suspected of killing a gay who could only couple in Wilton Manors describe her uncle the day after Christmas. in glowing terms. “He was and is an amazing uncle and he was always there for me,” Howard said. “And he never let anything bad happen to me, he was more like an older brother. I love him with all my heart and I could never imagine him doing anything like this.” But most of those reached had not seen Avsenew lately, and were unaware that he had done jail time at least twice this year, getting out once in June. It was at Avsenew’s mother’s home in Dundee, Fla., where he was apprehended without incident on Dec. 28. That is also where the victims’ stolen car was recovered. Across the state, Avsenew has been taken into custody more than a dozen times since 2003, state records show. He has been convicted of vehicle theft, robbery, grand theft and engaging in fraud through bounced checks. He also has pled no contest to marijuana possession, loitering, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence. Wilton Manors police, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies are working together on the case. Anyone with further information is asked to contact WMPD Detective Biagio Balistreri at 954-390-2150. To provide anonymous information about this case, the public can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493TIPS. | l | Editor’s note: Norm Kent is a reporter with the South Florida Gay News and this article is used with permission.

Biden: Gay marriage ‘inevitable’

wire report

Washington, D.C. | Vice President Joe Biden is predicting that the evolution in thinking that will permit gays to soon serve openly in the military eventually will bring about a national consensus for same-sex marriage. Changes in attitudes by military leaders, those in the service and the public allowed the repeal by Congress of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’’ policy, Biden noted in a nationally broadcast interview on Christmas Eve. “I think the country’s evolving,’’ he said on ABC’s Good Morning America. “And I

think you’re going to see, you know, the next effort is probably going to be to deal with socalled DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act).’’ Gay marriage is legal in only a handful of states, mostly in the Northeast, and in Iowa. President Barack Obama recently said he still believes in allowing strong civil unions that provide certain protections and legal rights that married couples have. Obama said he is still wrestling with whether gay couples should have the right to marry, now that the change in the law will allow them to serve openly in combat. | l |

Colleges reconsider ROTC after ‘DADT’ repeal wire reports New Haven, Conn. | Some of the nation’s most elite colleges are moving toward welcoming ROTC units back to campus in light of the recent ruling to drop “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” the policy barring gays from serving openly in the U.S. military. Forty years ago, ROTC units disappeared from Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Stanford and other elite schools, casualties of Vietnam-era tension and academic power struggles.

Now, those same schools are moving toward welcoming ROTC units back thanks to the imminent demise of “DADT.” The mutual interest in resurrecting ROTC detachments is a significant development in the sometimes strained relationship between the military and universities. But it’s far from certain the military will return to these colleges. And the prospect of renewed campus debates on the topic could expose antimilitary sentiment that some suspect lurked beneath stated opposition to the 1993 policy. | l |

Navy captain to lose command over homophobic videos wire report Washington, D.C. | A series of coarse and sexually explicit videos produced several years ago and shown to the crew of a Navy aircraft carrier by an officer who is now the ship’s captain has cost the officer his command, a Pentagon official said on Tuesday. The officer, Capt. Owen Honors, was relieved of duty Tuesday afternoon, some two weeks before the carrier, the Enterprise, leaves to support combat missions in Afghanistan. Honors broadcast to his crew a series of profanity-laced comedy sketches in which he

uses gay slurs, mimics masturbation and opens the shower curtain on men pretending to bathe together. Honors appeared in the videos in 2006 and 2007 while he was the Enterprise’s secondranking officer, and he showed them across the ship to his 6,000-person crew on closed-circuit television. Honors took over as the ship’s commander in May. The navy says the videos are ``clearly inappropriate’’ and it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the production of the videos. | l |

Serbia far right leader charged in attacks on gays

Ariz. tries, fails to eliminate same-sex benefits

Prosecutors are charging Milan Obradovic, leader of the far right Serbian extremist group Obraz, with orchestrating violence during a gay pride march in Belgrade in October at which more than 150 people were hurt. Extremist groups attacked the police securing Serbia’s first gay pride gathering in years, triggering daylong street clashes and destruction. Obradovic faces up to 12 years in prison.

Claiming the state “should not sanction heterosexual or homosexual relationships out of marriage” on moral grounds, Arizona lawmakers have cut off health care benefits to about 600 heterosexual, unmarried domestic partners of state workers. Gov. Jan Brewer and lawmakers also intended to eliminate benefits for gay couples, but the state was prevented from taking those benefits away because of the new federal health care law and a court ruling requiring coverage for gay partners.

from Main Street USA—but the church on the corner is precisely what is funding the hateful efforts in Africa, both spiritually and financially. The Washington, D.C.-based organization known as “The Family,” which hosts the National Prayer Breakfast, counts both Bahati and Uganda’s President amongst its most important members. Senator Inhofe has stated that it was The Family that directed him toward political involvement in Uganda. The Family is also thought to have used Senator Brownback and Representative Joe Pitts to funnel millions of dollars into Ugandan abstinence-only programs. These Buying the programs have resulted in condom burnings Bullets and are faulted for a doubling in the HIV instance rate in Uganda. Furthermore, inspiration for the newest Brett Edward anti-gay law is credited to American antiStout gay activists, Don Schmierer, Caleb Lee Brundidge and Scott Lively, who gave a seminar in Uganda months before Bill 18 was first proposed. But we cannot point an accusing finger only at extremists. These cruel and murderous laws are the fault of every politician and citizen in America who voted “No” on gay marriage or have voted to ban it, who voted “No” on repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, and those who said “No,” their gay son or daughter can no longer live in their home. It is time that these leaders stop blaming the “gotcha media” for the hateful statements falling from their own mouths. It’s time for us all to take responsibility for the things that we say, the meanings we convey, and the eventuality to which they lead. All contingencies of Moral Majority’s war on the LGBT community lead to one place: that place was Paragraph 175 in the early 20th century; it is Uganda in the early 21st. We need to ask ourselves why we ignore the utter joy they get from funding cruelty, ask ourselves why anyone should be allowed to feel warm, fuzzy, or holy knowing a portion of their tithe has bought the bullet used to murder a homosexual—whether in Uganda or just down the street. And ultimately, we need to force those people to look at their smiling faces in the mirror and ask themselves: “If this is righteousness, what then, is sin?” | l | Writer, filmmaker, and photographer Brett Edward Stout spent five years in the US Marine Corps as a Russian linguist. truly are on the right side of history. Seventeen years of witch hunts under this policy have cost thousands of exemplary service members their careers, once again proving there are very personal and costly consequences of discrimination. This cannot end fast enough. Our entire country benefits when fairness prevails, when qualified and patriotic service members no longer have to fear being targeted by their own government, when courageous men and women are able to serve openly and honestly. We thank President Obama for signing this critical legislation and now call upon him as commander in chief, and his top military leaders, to swiftly lead us through to full implementation.

I was glad to see the follow up article concerning the closure of Dive Bar that presented the situation as I understood it (Issue 17.26). I had been told that there were just two complaints [against the establishment.] I am very sorry to see the Dive Bar and Domain go. I believe they were both lease situations and don’t know how that factored into the decisions. I thought Domain was a strong business and that the Dive was building up and expected to see it take off with the snowbird season. Our zoning does require any new business (and this is nearly everyone now) to offer a restaurant if they open a bar. And I understand that dancing is considered a nightclub which is also not allowed in the waterfront, either. I hope that our staff explained that to the Dive owners when they first contacted them but perhaps there was a miscommunication there. We work hard to be a business-friendly community so any time we hear that we are not, we take that to heart.

KATE SHINDLE TAKES ON THE MAD HATTER ROLE IN THE REVAMPED WONDERLAND

world steve blanchard

ampa | There are many layers to Broadway actress Kate Shindle. The 1998 Miss America is recognized for her crown, her stint as a correspondent for Today and her roles in films and Broadway plays. But the New Jersey native, who is currently playing the villainess Mad Hatter in Wonderland: A New Alice. A New Musical. is also a big-time HIV/AIDS activist. Shindle is relatively new to the musical, which has been revamped and reworked since it debuted in Tampa nearly a year ago. The 33-year-old has only been with the show since Labor Day 2010, and even in that short period of time she has seen the production evolve. While she may play a villainess on the stage, Shindle is anything but evil in real life. She still takes heart to her Miss America platform of HIV/AIDS activism and will appear, along with a few castmates at the Honey Pot in Ybor City on Jan. 7 to benefit the Francis House. On Jan. 11, the Straz Center will host Francis Night at Wonderland, where theatergoers can enter a special code when they order tickets to ensure $10 is donated to the HIV/AIDS charity. In a New Year’s Eve morning phone interview with Watermark—her first interview about her new role—Shindle shared her love of playing a non-traditional villain, the attraction she seems to have over gay men and the importance of keeping HIV/AIDS education in the public eye: WATERMARK: Congratulations on your role as the Mad Hatter in Wonderland. How familiar were you with this musical before you came on board? KATE SHINDLE: I hadn’t seen the production before, and by the time I went in to audition I hadn’t read the script because they were doing some rewrites. I had a few scenes to work on. What’s interesting is as much as I like the show, it’s changed significantly. There’s been a lot of evolution since Labor Day. Isn’t dealing with all the rewrites and that “evolution” frustrating as an actor? How do you keep the changes straight? Continued on page 28 | uu |

surviving by sheer willpower in an ugly, desolate world. Sure, you’ll see the same bounty hunter Rooster Cogburn famously portrayed by John Wayne, but Bridges’ version is dirtier, drunker and more morally challenged. You’ll also witness the resolute 14-year-old girl Mattie (Steinfeld) out to hire Cogburn to avenge her father’s death. But this is where the film shines; the real hero—the personality with the monumental fortitude—is the smart-talking, dourly obsessed teenager. True Grit is based on the 1968 book by Charles Portis, who has a gift with unusual, stilted dialogue, flinging terms like “brush farmers” in with big words like “braggadocio.” This adaptation hones closer to this heightened language, which lends the movie a unique voice. The Coen brothers (who also made Fargo and No Country for Old Men) lead their actors to deliver brilliant performances. Their dark comedy and rich cinematography are still present. This time, however, the Coens abandon their typical filmic gimmicks for a riveting story narrated by a scarily unwavering young woman.

hat a fantastic, over-the-top melodrama! The saying goes that to be the greatest—and in America, we must be the best—we have to become obsessed. Certainly, this is truer with the physical arts like ballet. The act of training changes the bones in dancers’ feet and inspires anorexia. At the center of Black Swan is a phenomenally psychopathic performance by Natalie Portman as a ballerina absolutely fixated on becoming the lead in Swan Lake. The camera never leaves her vicinity. We see what she sees; we experience her dangerous fixation and her tenuous grip on reality. Choreographer Cassel tells Portman she can dance the innocent and perfect white swan, but she’s missing the passion and danger of the black swan. Is she going to lose the role to voluptuous upstart Kunis? Or will Portman go barking mad like tossed-aside ballerina Ryder? All she can do is run home to creepy mommy Hershey, who she still lives with, even though Portman is nearing 30. What type of work did you do with it? I volunteered with something very similar to Francis House while I was in Chicago. I stuffed envelopes and answered phones. It just always seemed so stupid to me that we knew how to stop AIDS but we couldn’t figure out how to actually do it. I learned that too many people were reluctant to talk about a straightforward public health issue. That injustice hooked me.

Since she was crowned Miss America 1998, Kate Shindle has appeared in film, television and now, as The Mad Hatter in Wonderland.

That’s like asking an accountant how they do all that math. It’s our job. The memory muscles are tricky sometimes and those changes are the things we work on the most. It’s part of the gig. There are new lines that sometimes show up in the morning that go into the show that night. You are an American sweetheart. Was it difficult taking on the role of a villain? It’s funny. I feel safe saying that the Mad Hatter is not a traditional villain. The character and all of Wonderland are parts of Alice. So the Hatter is a force within Alice that she must deal with before she can return to her real life. The music in this show is great and I love the creative team. If this was a regular villain, it wouldn’t be nearly as powerful as it is.

So you see your role as playing part of someone’s personality? Yes. We’re diving deep inside someone’s head and looking at what makes up her psyche. That’s the most interesting thing. I think while people can enjoy this show on its surface, and kids will love it because they get to see a guy in a rabbit outfit, it’s challenging in that we get into the ego of the main character. You are very involved with the HIV/AIDS community and activism. Why? I went to a very white suburban Catholic High School, which was great, but I didn’t grow up in a world that spent a lot of time with AIDS. It wasn’t part of our universe. When I went to college, I learned that a professor in the theater department had just died from complications and it was a loss deeply felt by faculty, staff and his students.

You were very outspoken about it during your reign as Miss America 1998. When I was Miss America I was only 20—just old enough to think for myself but not old enough to be scared of opening my mouth and broadcasting my opinions. (Laughs.) Miss America required a platform and I think this was a pathway to social relevance for the organization. In 1998, no one really cared or paid attention to the swimsuit, but they did pay attention to the platforms that changed the world. Has that involvement, you think, made you a role model to the LGBT community? I think I’ve been fortunate in terms of being a role model to many communities. I felt like an outsider when I was a kid because I had bad hair, glasses, played the violin and had the same sweater in five different pastel colors. (Laughs.) But I always identified with those who didn’t feel like they fit in and I still do. That gave me a built in mechanism to somehow connect with a few kids who would leave that high school auditorium after I spoke and remember what would discuss. The gay community is awesome and it doesn’t hurt that I am in musical theater or that I sing loudly and without taking breathes for long periods of time. Obviously you’re passionate about musical theater and HIV/AIDS activism. What else gets your attention? The fight for equality. The equality battle has come a long way. Things that make me angry include the opposition to same-sex marriage. The battle for equality will not be won or lost by just one segment. It will be won when we bring in gays, straights, Christians, Republicans, Democrats and everyone else. We can’t win with the same support system. We have to expand it. | l |

Kriseman the comedian?

A real soup kitchen

Who knew politicians could be so funny? State Rep. Rick Kriseman brought the house down during the Roast of Brian Longstreth on Jan. 2 at the Flamingo Resort. The roast, which celebrated Longstreth’s 50th birthday and raised money for St. Pete Pride and the ACLU, also showcased the always-funny Christine O’Leary. Kriseman surprised the crowd, however, when he took the stage and shared how excited he was about honoring St. Petersburg’s famous silver-haired, Raysloving gay resident. “But that’s when I thought we were talking about Charlie Crist,” he said, to thunderous applause and laughter. Kriseman went on to diss the Republican-run state legislature and share funny anecdotes about his dealings with Longstreth since the two met when the politician was a St. Petersburg councilman. Kriseman even returned to the stage later in the evening impersonating former St. Pete Mayor Rick Baker—complete with the hoarse voice. Even O’Leary, who always steals the show, had to bow in recognition to Kriseman’s comedic prowess after his performance. If you liked Kriseman before the roast, you loved the man afterward. It goes to show that if you have a job in Tallahassee, you have to have a strong sense of humor.

Sometimes you just have to take a minute and applaud amazing, giving people. According to a very reliable source within Tampa’s LGBT community, the owner of he Stone Soup Company on 7th Ave. in Ybor City literally runs a restaurant during the day and then gives his leftover soup away to the homeless every week. The straight owner, Ilya Ben Goldberg, purposely opened his restaurant in the west end of the historic district because he’s such a progressive thinker. He’s also a member of the GaYbor District Coalition. It makes us proud that a business owner thinks of others in difficult economic times and that he can see past class, sexuality and income when it comes to helping his fellow man. Plus, the food at The Stone Soup Company is incredible. We encourage anyone in the area to stop in, thank Goldberg and enjoy a wonderful meal.

When valet parking delivered a car at closing time, Wanzie shoved his bags into the trunk and started to drive off… until the owner started pounding on the door and yelling, “Get out of my car!” A startled Wanzie professed his innocence, but the enraged woman would have none of it. “Do you have a baby?!” she screamed. “Didn’t the car seat in the back tip you off?!” He handed her the keys and she calmed down… until Wanzie realized she still had his gifts in her trunk and started chasing after her waving his hands. On New Years Eve, a valet at one of the biggest and busiest local bars delivered the wrong car to an oblivious female patron, who continued on to two more watering holes before noticing the error hours later. The car owners were incensed. I mean, when you’re ready to leave a party, you’re ready to leave.

Bitch Slap This news short comes from the Naples Daily News in sleepy southwest Florida,

and is best quoted verbatim: Sebastian C., 50, was arrested by Collier County Sheriff’s deputies at his home shortly before 9 p.m. on New Years Eve. Mr. C. and his live-in boyfriend of eight years began fighting about his boyfriend’s mother, according to reports. The men were both intoxicated and the argument began when Mr. C. hit his boyfriend in the arm, kicked him in the buttocks and slapped his face. According to deputies,“his boyfriend told him to get out of his life while making a gesture with his hand… palm up while blowing air across it.” Now that’s a police report to make you proud!

he LGBT community has always been known for jumping on the next trend, but this talent might be detrimental to getting in shape. Doctors, specialists, scientists and people who’ve turned their lives around tell us time and again that we don’t need grapefruit and kumquat diets or grueling exercise plans we will quit when we grow frustrated. Since we likely didn’t get out of shape overnight, getting back into shape takes time—the tried and true combo of patience and diligence. “I’ve been doing this a while, so I’ve changed my metabolism,” says Orlando resident Guy Bosworth, who has lost 55 pounds over 18 months through careful diet and exercise. “Now, I basically know what I can eat and what I can’t, and I have my exercise plan built into my habits.” That exercise includes three days a

week of weights with a trainer. It also includes five days of hour-long cardio. “I don’t mind,” he says of the commitment it takes. “Cardio is my decompression time now, my escape from work,” admits Bosworth, who trains flight attendant union reps. Bosworth does admit that his job’s travel makes it hard, but a committed person will always find a place and time to get healthy. Bosworth, who is 5 foot 11 inches, started slow, by working with the personal trainer. As he shed some of his initial 235 pounds, he became more enthused. He added cardio, started watching what he eats, cleared more time, and dropped to 180 in about 10 months; he’s maintained it since. “It was a slow process,” says the single and svelte Bosworth, “about a pound a week.” “I’ve struggled with my weight

for my whole life. I’ve done Weight Watchers, I’ve been on the Atkins Diet. I’ve tried a variety of different things over the years, and my weight has constantly gone up and down.” Bosworth says he doesn’t know what exactly motivated him to commit to this long-term health plan: “I think it was the next step in a process I’ve been going through over the last couple years, recognizing that I needed to change my self-destructive behaviors. I got a good tax return and I thought, ‘You know, I could spend this on toys, or I could invest this money in my health.’ For some reason, I chose the latter.” For Disney actor Michael Colavolpe, the motivation came from another thespian, the well-known Central Florida actor/singer/cabaret Continued on page 38 | uu |

REGISTERED YOGA TEACHER

O

rlando | After spending several years in the fitness industry as a personal trainer, a friend introduced Greg Duke to yoga to help counter injuries he had sustained in Orlando’s Central Florida Softball League. The 39-year-old soon fell in love with the challenges presented by yoga and trained to become an instructor. In 2010, Duke graduated the Yoga Teacher Training with Senior Baptiste teacher Mark White and is now an instructor at Orlando Power Yoga. To contact Duke or to sign up for a class, visit OrlandoPowerYoga.com or call 407-719-0101. To reach Duke directly, call 407-496-3091. Duke shared his thoughts on yoga, its benefits and why it can help improve someone’s overall fitness Who benefits the most from yoga? Everyone can see life-changing benefits from yoga. Everyone comes in for different reasons—weight loss, emotional therapy, physical rehabilitation, to heal old injuries, defy old age and turn back the clock, gain better flexibility, increase muscle tone, discover a healthy optimal body of overall health, fun exercise, or just for the physical challenge. Yoga has something for everyone that gives it time and a chance.

I think most people just don’t understand yoga. They may already have a preconceived notion of what it is and they either determine it’s too hard or not for them. Usually, new students are brought in by a friend, or they hear about amazing cases of peoples lives changing due to yoga. I just tell people to have an open mind, and that we're saving a spot for them when they are ready.

Is yoga compatible to weight training or other gym activities?

Are there specific courses for beginners?

It’s very compatible, Yoga will allow you to improve any fitness program by improving strength, flexibility and structural alignment. It will also help cut down on recovery periods and will detox the body of impurities caused by intense weight training. There is much more to yoga than just stretching.

Every class has beginners in it—we are all beginners. More advanced students know when to go deeper into a pose, and I always give modifications and variations for those with less experience or for those that may be trying to take it easy that day.

How did you get involved in yoga? I first came to yoga to heal myself after being a smoker most of my young life. When I quit a friend recommended I go to yoga to cleanse my body and strengthen my lungs. Most recently I came back to yoga to reduce injuries while playing softball. I was so tight from weight training, I got injured at almost every game or practice. I was referred to Orlando Power Yoga by a friend. it turned out I knew the owner, Kelly Senn, from years before. I saw so much improvement in my athletic ability and my range of motion after a short period of time practicing this style of yoga, I was amazed. Yoga is often linked to spirituality. Is the practice possible if someone isn’t spiritual?

Are people intimidated by yoga? How do you convince those people to try it?

Yoga in America starts off by opening the body. You don’t have to be spiritual to open the body and strengthen it. The spiritual part happens if you want it to or if you’re open to the thought that, “Yes, you have a heart inside your body.” That is spirit.

For you personally, what it is your favorite thing about Yoga? It keeps changing—I guess because I keep changing and growing. It used to be about noticing my own personal achievements and advancements within my own practice, but now I enjoy watching that within my students. Do you have a favorite yoga position? I love to do backbends. Camel, Bridge, and Wheel are all back-bending asanas (poses). Even though they can be challenging at times, they feel great. Stretching and opening up the muscles closest to the heart can be scary and make you feel very vulnerable. But the rewards are immeasurable, much like opening up your heart in a relationship. What is the biggest challenge you face as a yoga instructor? My biggest challenge is getting out of my own way, having faith and simply allowing the process to happen. Much like a student practicing, I am simply a teacher practicing, learning along the way. | l |

Trainers share aDvice To achieve goals in The new Year

steve blanchard

F

or most of us, a brand new year means brand new resolutions, often revolving around getting into shape. But every year, resolutions fade, our excitement ebbs and we find we’re in the exact same shape we were the 12 months earlier. To help you accomplish your fitness goals in 2011, we spoke with trainers in the fitness field who have helped countless clients achieve success and asked for their advice. The right motivation Jared Burgess of Tampa owns Underground South Tampa, and won Watermark’s 2009 WAVE Award for favorite fitness trainer. He says that while most people are motivated into the gym for aesthetic reasons, it’s important to look at the overall health benefits of a good workout plan. “A well-defined chest, chiseled abs, and sculpted abdominal tend to be the desire that drives a lot of men to hit the gym,” Burgess says. “Those are great goals but other benefits of strength training include increased bone density, a lower risk of illnesses like diabetes, stroke and heart complications and more.” Tera Guzman agrees. The owner of City Gym in St. Petersburg is a bodybuilder and has helped men and women reach their goals. She adds that in addition to weight training, nutrition is key. “Women and men both want to lose fat in their abdominal and hip areas,” she says. “It helps to have a nutrition program that is specifically designed for their needs. They must also have a cardiovascular regimen and learn exercises to target problem areas. There’s no rush Sometimes the hardest part of any new fitness routine is just getting started. Too many people enter the gym, overdo it and are too sore to continue.

“If you are new to strength training you must start slow and work your way up,” Guzman says. “You don’t want to injure yourself or make yourself so sore initially that it distracts from your everyday activities.” It’s also important to work out the entire body and not just the “vanity muscles,” according to Burgess. “Focusing on the entire body helps prevent injury,” Burgess says. “The core area is one of the most important areas to build and develop in conjunction with everything else, as almost every movement you make requires some level of tension in the mid-section. “ Don’t be intimidated Walking into a gym or fitness center for the first time can be an unsettling experience for some. Big guys, intimidating machinery and a lack of knowledge may make you want to head for the door. But there’s nothing to be scared of, according to Guzman. “I’ve found in my experience that if you look around, you’ll find most members are not any different than yourself,” Guzman says. “Not all gym members are necessarily former college athletes. Your anxiety will remain if you continue to avoid the situation.” Both Burgess and Guzman say that asking for help is encouraged in the gym and that asking for simple instructions does not lock you into any kind of training contract. “March right up to a staff member and ask,” Guzman says. “The staff is there to help you and make your workout experience as effective as possible, no matter what your skill level.” Guzman and Burgess are both available for personal training. O

rlando | As reporter and news anchor at NBC affiliate WESH-TV, Wendy Chioji was a reassuring presence in Central Florida for more than twenty years. During that time she won journalism awards, including an Emmy, and was lauded for her many volunteer activities. She also developed close ties with the local LGBT community as a member of the Hope & Help Center’s advisory board. But in 2001, and just days after running the Boston Marathon in less than four hours, the fitness buff was diagnosed with stagetwo breast cancer. She continued to exercise during months of brutal chemotherapy, and famously attended the Headdress Ball wearing a platinum blonde wig to cover her shaved head. Eventually Chioji emerged cancer-free and with a new perspective on life. In 2008, she quit her coveted anchor job and moved to Park City, Utah, where she reinvented herself as a fitness and yoga instructor, freelance journalist and spokesperson for cancer survivors. “I plan to do everything I can to make the most of this second chance, both for myself and the people I might be able to help,” she told Runner’s World in 2007. In April, Chioji will join former WESH sports anchors Marc Middleton and Bill Shafer as a reporter for the nationally syndicated Growing Bolder television show, which appears on most PBS affiliates. With typical enthusiasm, Chioji jumped at the chance to talk with Watermark readers about fitness. WATERMARK: It’s a new year and everybody wants to get fit. You exercised while you were going through chemo! Any tips for getting and staying motivated? WENDY CHIOJI: In a word: Go! The hardest thing about any workout is getting out of the house and doing it. If you’re just getting started, have reasonable goals. Run for 15 minutes, or work out at the gym for just 30 minutes at first. Also, have a program! If you’re just heading out with no plan, it’s easy to overdo it or get bored or just not make any progress. Set goals. You have friends and fans that have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Do you see any

parallels with your cancer battle? The disease may be different, but many parts of the experience are the same. The diagnosis will take your breath away. It will reprioritize your life and force you to make big choices. The treatment can be harrowing and daunting. We’ve made lots of progress, but both diseases still have a stigma; that’s definitely something that HIV/AIDS and cancer advocates need to work on. There’s no need to whisper “cancer” or “HIV” any more.

their lives. I realized then that even if my disease killed me, I’d have time to put my affairs in order and say what I needed to say to people I loved. After I was done with treatment, I started doing pretty much everything that I’d put off for “a better time.” I went on a photo safari in Africa. I bungee jumped over the Zambezi River. I shaved my head and went platinum blonde to the Headdress Ball. There’s no guarantee there will be a tomorrow. You have to live for today.

Do you have gay friends with HIV who, like you, have used what many would see as negative in positive ways? There are two big ways you can react when you’re diagnosed with a lifethreatening disease. My biggest athletic goal is still to qualify for the World Championship Ironman in Kona, Hawaii. Do you count calories? Take any supplements? I don’t count calories. I am the world’s worst dieter. I’d rather run an extra hour than deny myself a piece of pumpkin pie. I do take some supplements because I don’t always eat as well as I should: fish oil, iron, a multivitamin and glucosamine-chondroiten. Body types vary. How does someone know when they’re at a healthy weight? There are all kinds of charts measuring BMI [Body Mass Index] and height-toweight ratio, blah blah blah. It’s enough to make your head spin. How do you feel? Do you like the way you look? That’s my best indicator. Do you have any dieting tips? Get off the couch, even if just for 10 minutes. Then reassess. Like I said, getting out the door is the hardest part of a workout. Think diet, not dieting. Eat different foods with lots of colors; green is particularly good. Its okay to eat a cookie, just don’t eat the whole freaking box. Its okay to binge once in a while, just don’t link big fat food days together. Remember that restaurant portions are almost always too big. Eat slowly. Think about how great half of that piece of salmon and that leftover rice would be for lunch tomorrow. | l |

Spotting insecurities ADVICE FROM

The Truth

Truth@WatermarkOnline.com

I would need to know how close your friendship with Darryl is. If he’s a very close friend, I would sit him down and have a serious conversation. I would let him know that the constant hubris is not only exceptionally unattractive, it also is transparently about his insecurities. I would ask him if he realized that the image he is presenting to the world is one of someone who is so screamingly insecure that he constantly has to prop himself up. I would also make it clear that he also looks a little delusional. Remind him that he is, yes, handsome. But from a purely objective place as his friends, you can report that not nearly the number of people are coveting him as he thinks. I imagine he’ll at least think of your words the next time he feels like pointing out how wellcruised he is. In the event that he is not such a close friend, I’d say “fuck him.” That shit’s annoying, yo.

Dear Truth, I am a single, 32-year-old lesbian, born and raised in Kansas. My parents (whom I adore) still live in the house I grew up in, and most of my family still lives within 200 miles of my hometown. Shortly after I came out to my family in 2000, I moved to Bradenton for work and I have lived here happily ever since. I go back home several times a year, but I’m finding it harder and harder to get excited about visiting, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dear Truth, My family is incredibly loving and y friend Darryl thinks totally supportive, but I’ve established everybody is hitting on him. a really good life here in Florida and Darryl is handsome, but he’s my circle of gay friends has become a not nearly the catch that he thinks second “family” to me. This year was he is. No matter where we go, Darryl especially hard since my closest friends feels obligated to inform us that all the were celebrating their new baby’s men—especially the hot ones—are after first Christmas. I know bio-families him. I’m so sick of him saying something are important and I want to be a good like, “Did you see daughter, but I’m that guy cruising tired of missing me?” whenever a out on celebrating Here comes the good-looking man holidays with the Truth: Darryl sounds walks by. And it’s people with whom not just gay guys, I share my life. Is insufferable. either. Darryl is it wrong that I’d convinced that he’s rather be with my so attractive and friends than my masculine that even straight guys want family for holidays? What should I do? him. It’s annoying and embarrassing, —Troubled in Paradise and a couple of times we’ve almost gotten into fights because Darryl insists Dear Bradenton is Paradise?, on maintaining eye contact with the What we have here is called an guy—he calls it “cruising back”—if he embarrassment of riches. You are truly thinks the guy is hot. I’ve tried to talk blessed, and I hope you take time to to Darryl, but to no avail. What should remember that at the onset of a new year. I do? I think with thoughtful planning and —Weary Wingman rigorous communication, you can enjoy your time with your family, while still Dear W2, fulfilling your desire to spend the quality Here comes the Truth: Darryl sounds time with your chosen family. that might keep you at home during the holidays. I would explain this, tenderly, to them. I certainly wouldn’t necessarily make an “I’m choosing my friends over you” statement. But do remind them that you have many close friends—all of whom I hope they have met or at least heard about extensively—to spend the holidays with, and not to worry. If you communicate months in advance what your plans for the holidays will be, there will be no surprises when the dates arise. I wouldn’t jettison all trips home; you would eventually regret that as well. But rotating various holidays at home and away should give you the opportunity to be fully present to both your families. | l | { PA I D A D V E R T I S E M E N T }

FIFA leader apologizes for gay sex comment wire report Abu Dhabi, U. A. E. | FIFA’s president Sepp Blatter apologized last month for his remarks that gay fans should abstain from sex during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Blatter told journalists in Abu Dhabi that he was sorry if anyone was offended by his comments in South Africa, where he said gay visitors should “refrain from any sexual activities” while in Qatar because of the Gulf nation’s strict laws against homosexuality. “It was not my intention and never will be my intention to go into any discrimination,’’ Blatter said in Abu Dhabi, which is hosting the Club World Cup. “This is exactly what we are against. If somebody feels that they have been hurt, then I regret (it) and present apologies.” Blatter’s comment prompted a leading

international gay rights group to demand an official apology from FIFA. Juris Lavrikovs, communications director for the European branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, said the comments were “very unfortunate and have left people deeply offended’’ and said “we are talking about a very basic human right that is being violated.’’ Lavrikovs said Qatar and more than 70 other countries still criminalize individuals for homosexual relationships, and some countries punish them by death sentence. Since winning the right to host the tournament, concerns have been raised about Qatar’s social restrictions, limiting the drinking of alcohol to hotels, frowning on public affection and considering homosexuality taboo. | l |

Gay football club founder honored wire report London, England | One of the founders of the UK’s first gay men’s football team in London was honored for his fight against homophobia in sports. Aslie Pitter, 50, was honored for his impact on tackling homophobia in sport through his dedication to London-based Stonewall FC, the world’s most successful gay football club. Pitter is the reserve team manager for the

club, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and still plays competitively. Pitter, from Balham, south London, is a former actor who now works as assistant manager of a Boots store. “I just feel so honored today, although it’s recognition for everybody in the club that we’re doing a good thing and helping people fulfill their potential,” he said. “It’s a recognition of English grassroots football.” | l |

At her personality appraisal, she was deemed to have excellent vocabulary, was argumentative, and overaggressive. The overall evaluation called her “a good worker—if she has her own way!” By the time of her honorable discharge she was a staff sergeant. The only real embarrassing part is that she was out of work for five weeks “after contracting a venereal disease.” What did I tell you? Even tops are at risk! Picture it—Chris Rock serving Mariska Hargitay breakfast in bed...in the nude! The Children’s Defense Fund held its annual benefit in NYC and auctioneer Ali Wentworth was unable to get a high bid for Rock’s package, so to speak (I suppose her hubby George was too shy to bid on it himself). With the blessing of Chris’ wife (who is on the board), Ali threw in that Chris would be nude, and up popped Mariska’s hand. I guess Chris Rock servicing you in the nude is worth $25 grand. At least at my house, the camera equipment is already set up. This ties in perfectly with our “Ask Billy” question. Gary in Boston asks: “I just saw a video of Brendon Villegas from Big Brother 12 apologizing for having an online cyber-indiscretion. What the hell does that mean? And where are the photos?” Brendon was on Big Brother this past summer. The sexy swim coach developed a relationship with another contestant, Rachel, which resulted in

Mariska Hargitay agreed to buy “Breakfast in bed served by Chris Rock” to benefit the Children’s Defense Fund, as long as he did so naked. Rock and his wife agreed to the arrangement.

some risqué bulging underwear shots, which we’ll also post. Since then, he apparently continued seeing Rachel, but had some sort of a relationship with another chick named Molly. To prove her point, Molly posted the nude photos of Brendon, which Rachel apparently recognized. Brendon claimed it was only a cyber-affair. Molly counters that they did have sex—“He denies it and I am not proud of it, but yes, only once. I don’t want to go into the details.” She may not, but I’m happy to share some details with you on BillyMasters.com. Since it’s too late to make another gift suggestion, I’m going to give you the gift of laughter. I got quite a chuckle out of watching a troupe of four shirtless male acrobats in tight white pants performing in front of Pope Benedict and a mixed assortment of holy men. It’s rather amusing seeing these celibate fellows, fiddling underneath their vestments, their minds wandering back to the rectory. It sure as hell beats the crazy lady tackling the Pope last Christmas Eve. Or does it? When the Vatican is hiring male strippers for midnight mass, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. Until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible. | l | Sexy swim coach Brendon Villegas of Big Brother 12 is still fighting rumors of a love triangle—and those online photos aren’t helping.
