Angola For intrepid travellers, Angola has it all: cascading waterfalls, tropical rainforests in the north, desert dunes, volcanic gorges and scenic stretches of beach. Botswana Botswana is one of Africa’s last wildernesses. Home to the Okavango Delta and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the country is a popular safari destination.

SHARM EL SHEIKH RED SEA THIS IS RUSH HOUR

The Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, situated at the southern point of the Sinai, has some of the world’s most celebrated diving attractions around its shores. The worldfamous Ras Mohammed National Park is located at the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula where deep water upwellings generate incredible coral growth, particularly on the signature sites of Shark and Yolanda Reefs.

During the summer months this area is also a hotspot for schooling snapper, barracuda, batfish and unicorn fish. Marine encounters recorded by divers on these life-filled sites also include whale sharks, manta rays and dolphins.

Head north from Ras Mohammed to the Strait of Tiran and you will find a coral garden described by scuba diving pioneer Jacques Cousteau as one of the most spectacular reefs he had ever seen. The steep-sided walls of Jackson Reef are where you will find some of the most beautiful coral cover in the Sinai region, including the famous rare red anemone. Strong currents,

most profuse at the edge of Jackson Reef, attract an abundance of pelagic fish particularly during the summer months. In the less wind-swept and calm days of summer, boats are able to dive the north side of the reef. Although far from guaranteed, the chance to see the resident school of scalloped hammerhead sharks is well worth a dive in the blue water.

Wrecks are also a major pull for visitors, with one of the most famous sunken diving attractions located just a few hours’ boat ride from Sharm. Voted time over as one of the best wreck dives, the Thistlegorm alone attracts scuba visitors from all over the world to the northern Egyptian Red Sea resort.

If you don’t want to travel far to a dive site, or like the idea of half-day trips, you can opt to go local. Sharm’s local reefs are excellent for training and photography, and at the right time of year throw up their own spectacular surprises. From the months of May to September it is not unusual to spot the odd manta ray or whale shark passing by as they follow the plankton.

Uganda Middle East & Africa

Uganda Uganda is still relatively unspoilt, meaning it has a lot to offer nature tourists. The Nile begins its 6,695km journey to the Mediterranean at Jinja, on the shores of Lake Victoria. There is also the Rwenzoris, Africa’s tallest mountain range, and a number of notable national parks, which are home to incredible wildlife, from the big five to majestic mountain gorillas. There is bustling city life, too, in the capital Kampala and the colonial town of Entebbe, the capital until the country gained independence in 1962.

IRAN

Sharjah Sharjah is Dubai’s more conservative (no alcohol is available here) and considerably more subtle neighbour, and is widely considered to be the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates.

There’s the incredible Mleiha Archaeological Centre, which dates back many thousands of years, while the fascinating Heritage Area on the creek that the city was originally built around has museums and art galleries devoted to Emirati culture and history.

No surprise, then, that Sharjah was named Capital of Islamic Culture in 2014.

Zambia Some people refer to Zambia as the “real Africa”. It’s not surprising.

Elephants, antelope, buffalo and zebra call this relatively unspoilt country’s national parks home and it’s also the only place where you can stand on top of the incredible Victoria Falls. There are plenty of opportunities for more active adventures here, too, from bungee jumping and white-water rafting to abseiling and hiking through the wilderness.

In the urban centres, Livingstone (named after the Scottish doctor who discovered Victoria Falls) has a good selection of accommodation and the capital, Lusaka, boasts bustling markets and nonstop night life.
