Floor Joint Identification

Isolation Joint/Expansion Joint in a concrete floor Isolation/expansion joints are 1/2" to 1" wide and are the full depth of the slab. A material is usually inbetween to help form the joint and is usually fibrous, wood, felt or foam and may deteriorate over time.

Joint material allows for the slab(s) to move independently of each other or of another structure, such as a wall, column or post. The movement may be be vertical or horizontal and the filler material should be flexible enough to accommodate this.
