HISTORY OF WA SUNG
In the early 1920’s, young Oakland Chinese boys and men formed a social club called the Chinese 9. They played sandlot baseball and were sponsored by Maxwell Hardware Store. Later, they joined in regional baseball games and in 1926 became Wa Sung Athletic Club. These semi-pro players had many admiring Chinese fans. They had events such as Amateur Night, trips out of town, Raisin Festival, dinner parties, and Christmas parties, all revolving around this influential baseball team. The club disbanded in 1938.
In July 1952, the nucleus baseball club reorganized for the express purpose of one objective – “an organization whose purpose is to perform service to the Chinese Community and to promote understanding and goodwill and friendship amongst its citizens.” In 1953, it held its first installation dinner dance and monthly meetings to initiate charitable and educational services; and to promote goodwill, understanding and friendship amongst all. Thus, Wa Sung Service Club was formed. Its first president was Joseph Lee. From these original 16 men, primarily born and raised in Oakland, the men of Wa Sung showed a common interest and purpose, attracting many professional businessmen to join the club.
In 1979, President Walter Wong convinced the Wa Sung Board of Directors to allow women to join. The first woman was Linda Yu, a TV broadcaster. Joyce Cheng was the second woman to join; and in 1982, she became Member of the Year – our club’s highest recognition. Josephine Hui became Member of the Year in 1983 and was the first woman president in 1985.
In 2001, Wa Sung Service Club changed its name to reflect and reconfirm our basic goal in our club name: community. Thus, we became Wa Sung Community Service Club.
In 2010, as part of Wa Sung’s 5-Year Plan (2010 – 2015) Goal #1, we established the Wa Sung Junior League for young adults who are 17 to 25 years of age. Our club roster includes members of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds, with diverse occupations. Wa Sung has grown from a small group to its current membership of over 200 members.
In 2011, we opened the Wa Sung Community Center at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, which accomplished Goal #2 of our 5-Year Plan. Successful implementation of Wa Sung’s goals enables us to continue our commitment of providing service to the community.
In 2014, Wa Sung established the Capital Fund. This fund was created to support Wa Sung’s long-term goal of eventually purchasing an office (home) and/or income property to help fund Wa Sung’s community service activities.
In 2018, Wa Sung’s prized collection of artifacts from the Wa Sung Athletic Club was donated to the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. The donated materials, which consisted of photos and scoring records from 1927 - 1932, are among the oldest available records of organized baseball among Chinese Americans in the country.

ASIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON CRIME & ASIAN YOUTH SERVICES COMMITTEE
By Richard Fong
AACC, ASIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON CRIME WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1986 BY FOUNDERS WALTER CHINN, VICTOR MAR, OPD
SGT. IGNATIOUS CHINN, OFFICER ROBERT SYAPHUPHA , AND OPD CHIEF THOMAS
DONAHUE. This organization was created to engage the Chinatown Community to actively interact with Oakland Police Department. This was and is the result of a successful Community Policing. The city had a large population of Asian immigrants which lived in the Oakland area. They needed to build trust amongst available police resources and develop programs for the youth. This was so the youth could develop selfesteem, camaraderie and a sense of belonging. Thus in 1990 AYSC, ASIAN YOUTH SERVICES COMMITTEE was founded with the support and guidance of AACC. This project which is now in its 35th year. These Volunteers (OPD Officers, & Community Mentors) gave the youth, life lessons to included Leadership Skills, Responsibility, Integrity, Budgeting, Strategic Planning and to achieve their highest potential. Many of the youth have gone to prestigious Universities and come back to the the Bay area. Through the leadership of many OPD Officers and Civilian Mentors this program has developed many their highest potential. Many Volunteers : Chief Donahue, Deputy Chief Jeff Isreal, Deputy Chief David Downing, Deputy Chief Clifford Wong, DA Nancy O’Malley, DA Annie Saadi Esposito, Captain Allan Yu, Sgt Dan Ming, Lt Tam Dinh, Officer Robert Syaphupha, Officer Panya Sawan, Officer Warren Young, Officer Ouseng Saeparn, Officer Mae Phu Trode, Officer Jason Peng, Officer Bob Torio, Richard Fong, Steve Chan, Gil Gin, Jennifer Cheung, Linyi Yu, Limsokpov Sung, Chun Huang , Gary Xie, and Yvan Fung and many many more…
AACC though the years, has fostered interaction with Oakland Police Department to target Youth development and Community Policing. AACC programs for the Chinatown Community have included funding for youth programs, scholarships, safety fairs, workshops, and monthly meetings for the community headed by Command Staff providing Crime alerts, statistics, prevention and safety concerns. As one of the proud organizations in the community it provides summer camp to AYSC youth at the PAL camp in the Oakland hills, and funding for a picnic with community leaders. Obviously, both founders AACC and AYSC were Past Presidents of Wa Sung, Walter Chinn 1988 and Victor Mar in 1986. Both dedicated to promoting, good will and friendship to all. Thus, this started the relationship with AACC, AYSC and Wa Sung. The Wa Sung Club is fortunate to have many Community Service minded members, who also had vision to in include the youth with financial support thru Merrit Scholarships, and engaging the younger generations with community service
