WASHU REC V2.0

The Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center celebrated its first anniversary on Oct. 29, 2017. As Sumers enters its second year, WashU Rec continues working to make sure the facility best meets the needs of members. Listed below are some of the adjustments and improvements we have made to the facility over the last year.

FITNESS CENTER

LOCKERS & STORAGE

The Sumers Fitness Center is a space that has steadily evolved to suit our members' preferences. Over the summer we added more power racks and Olympic platforms as well as reorganizing equipment to create more open floor space on the south side of the weight area. We also relocated pieces of cardio equipment to the west end of the elevated track for members who prefer an outdoor view. Over winter break, we tweaked the equipment layout again to create a more efficient layout that puts all of the barbell apparatuses together. We also added specialized underlayment to the Olympic platforms to help deaden the sound when the plates contact the floor.

From day one, it was clear storage was an issue we needed to address. Over the summer, we added more cubbies outside Studio 1904 where members can store their belongings while they are taking classes. Over winter break, we completely redid the lockers on the north wall of the fitness center. The new layout not only provides more total lockers in the facility, but also offers bigger lockers where members can fit bookbags and coats without having to leave them out in the open.

We spent winter break giving a fresh coat of finish to the Rec Courts as well as the Olympic Studio, Studio 1904 and the racquetball courts. This coating will ensure participants will have optimum traction for all activities and programs. Additionally, we converted two racquet courts to international squash courts, giving us a total of four international squash courts in the facility.

AQUATICS With varsity, club, and recreational programs all vying for time, Millstone Pool is the most challenging space in the facility to schedule. Despite these challenges, we have successfully expanded our open swim schedule to cover more than 24 hour per week. This spring, we are also adding our first BearFit water class with Aqua Zumba, as well as offering weekly open log rolling sessions (see page 8 for more information).

Over the summer, the South 40 Fitness Center was outfitted with two power racks in the weight area. This not only made S40 Fitness a more versatile gym that is convenient for S40 residents, but it also made the facility a better alternative for members campus-wide whenever Sumers Rec is closed. We also added five Pilates reformers to the S40 Fitness Dance studio, allowing us to offer premium Pilates classes and personal training services.

SUMERS AT ONE Fun facts from the Gary M. Sumers Rec Center's first year of operation (Oct. 29, 2016 to Oct. 29, 2017).

• More than 415,000 total visits to the Sumers Rec Center. • 28,899 BearFit Class participants. • 4,184 total chair massages in the Halpern Greenfield Relaxation Room.
