From WCC to 33-Year Career in Education

Randy Fielder

Randy Fielder, a student at WCC’s first campus in Ypsilanti in 1969, says one of his favorite memories was attending classes in Quonset huts, the militarygrade, prefabricated shelters. Just as a Quonset hut was an unusual setting for a classroom, Fielder, by his own admission, was an unlikely college candidate.

“I was emotionally immature in high school, and as a result I did poorly my first two years. My junior and senior years were much better,” says Fielder.

“At the time of graduation, I was unsure of where I wanted to go with my life. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to go to college … [but] the military draft was in full swing to supply fodder for Vietnam, so males couldn’t afford to take a semester off to explore their options.” That factor and a conversation with a cousin clinched Fielder’s decision to go to WCC.

He says the College provided a high-quality education and gave him time to decide what he wanted to do with his life. He set his career goal of teaching elementary school while at WCC. He attributed the lower cost of WCC courses as instrumental in his ability to pay for his education at Eastern Michigan University. After graduating from WCC with his General Studies Associate, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1973 at EMU.

Shortly after his graduation, he began teaching at Adrian Public Schools. “I taught mostly fourth and fifth grades, along with a little third grade and physical education.

Fielder went on to earn his master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling at EMU in 1979 while instructing young students. After he retired from his 33-year career in 2006, he became a member of the Adrian school board in 2010.

Fielder praises the College for his experience. “Whenever I can, I talk up the quality and value of a community college education in general, and WCC specifically.”

Clair Dickson is a WCC instructor for several courses developed under the Connected Cars and Advanced Transportation grant. The courses include a series of classes in Microsoft Excel, XML coding and courses in Smartsheet.

Dickson attended Washtenaw Community College for two years before transferring to Eastern Michigan University. She earned a degree in secondary English education and became a high school English and history teacher. She taught in an alternative high school program, then moved to teaching online.

Alongside teaching, Dickson also worked in instructional design, and this is where she became involved with Microsoft Office certification training. As Dickson worked on Microsoft Excel courses in the early 2000s, she began to enjoy the power and possibility of data analysis and Microsoft Excel. In 2007, she passed the Microsoft certification exams and became a Microsoft Office master.

Dickson appreciates the opportunity to work at WCC, especially teaching the lessons related to traffic and car data, as she truly enjoys helping others learn about Excel, an in-demand skill necessary for all levels of jobs in a wide variety of fields. For her, working on Excel formulas and functions is her idea of (nerdy) fun.
