Entrepreneurial Spirit Provides Dividends Catherine Hadley Truman Scholarship winner Catherine Hadley says time well spent at Washtenaw Community College played an integral role in her becoming the 28th University of Michigan student to earn the prestigious honor. A former high school dropout who had pursued some entrepreneurial ideas, Hadley spent two-and-a half years on the WCC campus—first reacclimating herself to education, then compiling transferrable credits at the college’s low tuition rate while following its General Studies transfer program. During her years as a full-time WCC student and mother of two, Hadley founded BirthSafe.org, a nonprofit organization that gathers information about birthing providers and facilities while advocating for legislation that uplifts and empowers patients. It’s those kind of public service leadership qualities that would earn her the $30,000 Truman Scholarship. Hadley earned the scholarship while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the University of Michigan and will use its award to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work from U-M. “None of this would be possible without my time at Washtenaw Community College. I had such a transformative experience while on campus,” Hadley says. “It is truly the foundation of what I do and hope to achieve in my life.” Hadley is living proof that a community college can be the launching pad for an exceptional educational journey. Mary Cambruzzi Owner of Found — ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN What started as a hobby for Mary Cambruzzi evolved into a booming retail business. Creating a space that sold work by local artists, vintage finds and pieces made with reclaimed materials, Found opened in 2005. With a deep passion and a little help, Found has endured. Cambruzzi works closely with Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant at the MI-SBDC Greater Washtenaw Region, based at WCC, building strategies for growth, annual budgeting, retail and training practices, and staffing plans—which has helped her sales triple over the years. “Ron was instrumental when we were looking at spaces. Follow the money, and you will see where the development of the arts progressed. Policies/Information Class Drop/Refund Policy: Drops are accepted up to the start of the first class. No refunds are given, for any reason, once the class starts. Mandatory fees will only be refunded if a class is dropped at least 72 hours prior to the start of the first class. Cancellations: Washtenaw Community College reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a class that does not meet minimum paid enrollment. Participants will be notified of cancellations via email or phone. Mandatory Fees: Some classes require additional fees for

What Is a CEU? A CEU (continuing education unit) is a national measurement unit. One CEU equals ten classroom or equivalent hours and is used to record, transfer and recognize participation in noncredit classes. Emeritus Scholarship: In order to be granted emeritus

status, you must bring your driver’s license or state-issued photo ID to Student Connection on the WCC campus by January 1, 2022, to confirm that you are 65 years of age and have in-district residency status.To register online with the scholarship, please contact our offices at 734-677-5060, and we will apply the scholarship to your tuition for noncredit classes. Please note that the emeritus scholarship does not cover mandatory class fees.

Nonprofit Agency Scholarship: This scholarship

provides payment for tuition (only) of agency-approved Economic and Community Development noncredit classes. Submit an application each semester for each class you plan to attend. You must complete all items on this checklist to qualify: 1) You must be a permanent employee of a nonprofit agency (permanent position) in Washtenaw County; 2) Submit the nonprofit agency scholarship application, complete with supervisor-approved class(es) and signature, 10 business days before start of class; 3) You must attend all class sessions and complete all class requirements. If the class is not successfully completed, you (or your agency) may be billed for the full tuition amount of the class and/or have your scholarship discontinued; 4) You must submit your completed application form with a copy of your agency’s 501(c)3 documentation no later than 10 business days before the start of class.
