Jawad and his wife Shamim — known as “eloquent and tremendously effective representatives” of the Afghan people — mingled with international supporters of the foundation’s mission at an outdoor cocktail reception before dinner in the Willard Hotel’s historic Willard Room. CENTER STAGE: “This comes at a time when Afghanistan is at a critical juncture … people need necessary skills,” American Red Cross Chairwoman Bonnie McElveen-Hunter said prior to the presentation of an award to United Arab Emirates Amb. Yousef Al-Otaiba for his notable “generosity, philanthropy and intellect.” Al-Otaiba, in turn, paid his respects to Queen Sofía of Spain for working tirelessly to promote education for boys and girls.
