YOU Chris Cardus, student president...

“What’s really great about coming to Warwickshire College is that students have a voice, and it’s listened to. As student president I work with students across all centres to gather views and opinions and carry them forward to the college leadership team. “Student voice is about empowering you to shape and define what happens at college, making it the best learning experience possible. But it’s not all serious - we’ve got a really great Students’ Union that’s keen to get you involved in loads of activities to make your experience here fun and enjoyable. We do loads of things like sports, parties and rag week to raise money for charity. And of course there’s freshers’ week (hence the bunny ears!).”

ORE! P&B Trees

scale new heights

Two arboriculture students from Moreton Morrell started their own tree surgery business with support from the college’s enterprise board. Andrew Plester and Graham Bird – aka the Tree Fellas, run P&B Tree Services. Andrew said: “I always had ambitions to set up a business but didn’t realise how much support we’d receive from the college. The process of pitching our idea and receiving advice and guidance really enabled us to focus on what we wanted to achieve.” As a Gazelle college, Warwickshire College regularly gives students the opportunity to pitch ideas to the Enterprise Board, who offer advice and look at ways to help get ideas off the ground. Graham said: “Not only has the college enabled us to become qualified professional tree surgeons, it’s given us the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to run our own enterprise.” For more information about Gazelle Colleges, go to p57

They soon had a waiting list and took the plunge and opened as a nursery which now has 80 children on its books.

Laura went on to explain what made the business tick: “Our aim has always been to create a home from home for the children. We get to know the families personally, creating an open, friendly environment for everyone, including our staff.” Natasha said: “I can honestly say that I am a completely different person now to when I started and I have really enjoyed it.”

A window to the working world >>

Our student carpenters were given the chance to hone their skills - both practical and business - on a project to refurbish one of Warwickshire College’s oldest buildings. As part of refurbishing buildings at our Moreton Morrell centre, ancient sash windows needed replacing. Student carpenters were encouraged to pitch for the work, just as they would if they were in business, and had to work on a tender. Their bid went up against external firms, and our students won the contract and completed the work.

I’ve learnt from industry experts who are extremely supportive - the help I have received in my theory work and final piece has been incredible. Adam, Carpentry and Joinery

HELLO PARENTS We want all of our students to enjoy their time at college and be successful in their chosen course and future career. Our positive approach to learning is a result of a strong partnership between students, parents, carers and college staff - we call this the ‘college community of learning’. 56

Why choose Warwickshire College? Excellent results – we have a 98.3% A Level pass rate and the college was scored a Grade One ‘Outstanding’ college by OFSTED. An entrepreneurial college – we are an entrepreneurial Gazelle college which means our students are supported to develop the real skills needed to be successful in today’s workplace. This means that they have more chance of not only getting a job, but also progressing in that job. We offer engaging, interesting and project-driven study programmes, and recognise that while academic knowledge and technical skills are important, we also need to develop young people who know how to be part of a team, are effective communicators and who can demonstrate leadership. Support and wellbeing – help is available with essay writing and study skills, with the transition from school to college, and for students with learning difficulties. Each student has a personal learning adviser to support them, help them manage their workload and make the most of their opportunities. Students who excel – our students regularly win high profile awards in their specialist fields. When your child comes to meet us to discuss their application, all parents and carers will receive a guide which provides useful information about the educational experience at Warwickshire College and how we support our students.

>

> >

What is a Gazelle college?

The Gazelle Colleges Group is a group of 20 further education colleges across the UK that give students the opportunity to learn in a work-focused environment and gain commercial experience that will help them succeed in the workplace, or as an entrepreneur.

What is different about a Gazelle college?

Gazelle colleges are moving away from the traditional classroom learning environment towards an approach that puts students at the centre of their college career. There are a number of opportunities to work in commercial environments, attend unique events and take part in enterprise competitions while studying for a qualification.

How will this improve my child’s chances of getting a job?

Your child will get the opportunity to meet employers, understand what they’re looking for in college graduates and potentially spend time with entrepreneur mentors from the local business community. Whether or not they want to start their own business, they will develop the real skills needed to be successful in today’s workplace.

My child wants to go to University how is a attending a Gazelle college going to help them?

Even if they’re studying A-levels rather than a vocational course, we still give students access to unique opportunities which will add real credibility to their UCAS statements and CVs.
