Part 2 Apprenticeships and Work-based Qualifications

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. They are designed around the needs of employers, so you are able to employ people who can make a measurable contribution to your business performance; they gain more skills, competence, job satisfaction and promotion opportunities. It’s a ‘win-win’ all round and more than 85,000 small, medium and large organisations agree.

Facts in numbers*

How do apprenticeships work?

ɖɖ 8 0% of those employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive ɖɖ 81% of consumers prefer using a company which takes on apprentices (and you are given a certificate and employer badge to use on your stationery and marketing materials that highlights your commitment to apprenticeships) ɖɖ there are more than 85,000 employers offering apprenticeships in more than 130,000 locations ɖɖ 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce ɖɖ 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future *National Apprenticeship Service

An apprenticeship consists of a number of qualifications which make up an apprenticeship framework, combining both on and off-the-job training.

Business Benefits Organisations participating in apprenticeship programmes experience many business benefits, which can include: ɖɖ a more productive and competitive workplace ɖɖ improved quality of work ɖɖ demonstration of your commitment to staff development ɖɖ increased employee satisfaction ɖɖ higher staff retention ɖɖ stronger career progression ɖɖ more diverse workforce ɖɖ supporting the local economy

30

It includes: ɖɖ a knowledge-based element ɖɖ a module on employment rights and responsibilities ɖɖ ‘transferable’ or functional skills in maths and English ɖɖ a competence-based element On-the-job, an apprentice will work alongside your experienced staff to gain job-specific skills and they will be working towards the competence-based qualification. This will provide you with an immediate beneficial impact to your business. Off-the-job, apprentices spend time studying at Warwickshire College, typically on a day release basis and will be working towards the knowledge-based technical qualification such as a BTEC or C&G Diploma. The amount of time spent studying varies depending on the sector. There are more than 200 different apprenticeship frameworks available across 80 different industry sectors, so Warwickshire College will help you to establish the right solution for an apprentice in your organisation. Whether you wish to develop one of your current employees or take on new employees as apprentices, we’ll be with you all the way, supporting you from start to finish.

T 0300 45 600 46 E employers@warkscol.ac.uk W warwickshire.ac.uk For day course timetable and fees, see back of brochure

Apprenticeships Funding Apprenticeship funding is available from the National Apprenticeship Service. The size of the contribution varies depending on your sector and the age of the candidate. If the apprentice is aged 16 to 18 years old, you will receive 100 per cent of the cost of the training; if they are 19 to 24 years old, you will receive up to 50 per cent; if they are 25 years old or over you may get a contribution depending on the sector and area in which you operate.

£1500 grant to recruit an apprentice

How Warwickshire College will help you We can work with you to: ɖɖ i dentify and recruit suitable junior employees to apprenticeship level opportunities ɖɖ identify existing employees who may benefit from training ɖɖ plan and design training courses to meet your needs and those of the individual ɖɖ provide off-the-job training to support learning in the workplace ɖɖ monitor apprentice programmes and provide help and support where necessary ɖɖ assess apprentice competence in the workplace ɖɖ work as your link with the National Apprenticeship Service ɖɖ work with the national awarding bodies, such as C&G, to award nationally recognised qualifications to apprentices ɖɖ provide on-going support and training to you and your staff in all aspects of work-based learning ɖɖ advise on work-based qualifications for all staff, not only those eligible for apprenticeships, through the college’s team of subject specialists ɖɖ provide a dedicated account manager to keep you up-todate on all the progress of the apprenticeship at each stage

Small and medium-sized companies who have been thinking about taking on an apprentice – perhaps for the first time – have until 31 December 2014 to apply for a government grant. The Apprenticeship Grants for Employers are available to SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. Worth £1,500 the wage grants will help eligible employers offer people aged between 16 and 24 an apprenticeship. Companies can apply for funding for up to ten new apprentices, but they must be able to prove that they would not have taken on the apprentice without the additional incentive and that they have not taken on an apprentice in the past three years.

Vocational Qualifications are competence-based, meaning staff learn practical, work-related tasks designed to help them develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively. Qualifications are based on national standards, which say what a competent person in a job could be expected to do. As an employee progresses through the course, they compare their skills and knowledge with these standards so that they can see what they need to do to meet them.

Work-based Qualifications

Work-based Qualifications

Qualifications are related to a particular industry or sector and they can be studied at work, at college or as part of an apprenticeship. As an employer, you get the benefits of a better trained, more productive, highly motivated workforce without disruption to your business. Qualifications are available at levels 1 to 4 in a wide range of subjects including: ɖɖ Administration ɖɖ Business ɖɖ Business improvement techniques ɖɖ Carry and deliver goods ɖɖ Cleaning and support services

ɖɖ Contact centre operations ɖɖ Customer service ɖɖ Facilities Management ɖɖ Information technology

New Qualifications for Assessors and Internal Verifiers

If you employ assessors or internal verifiers, you should be aware that the old ‘A’ (assessor) and ‘V’ (verifier) qualifications have been succeeded by a new series of Assessment and Quality Assurer qualifications. To maintain currency of practice, all assessors and verifiers must update their current qualifications by gaining the new award Unit 1 – ‘Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment’ or by attending relevant CPD update training.
