Prospectus

I can truly say that we do everything in our power to develop our boys’ confidence, independence, and resilience.

Welcome

Welcome to Warwick Junior School. I am extremely proud to be Headmaster of this school; we pride ourselves on providing an educational environment that harnesses the potential of every one of our boys, challenging - yet supporting - them to be the best that they can be.

From our wholly committed staff, the wealth of opportunities that are available, and the structures of support that are in place, I can truly say that we do everything in our power to develop our boys’ confidence,

independence, and resilience that will best place them to take their next step into secondary education.

A Warwick Junior School education is one that is rooted in a desire to equip your son for the future as effectively as we can, whilst providing an environment that inspires, enables, and empowers. While the world of work may still be some years away, the values, skills, and attributes we help our boys to develop will enable them to succeed in this fast-paced and ever-changing world.

Mr John Bond Headmaster

Warwick Junior School

Our purpose is to inspire and nurture every pupil to thrive in the world, both now and in the future – ‘the Warwick Way’.

Warwick School is an academically selective independent school made up of the Junior School, for boys aged 7-11, and the Senior School, for boys aged 11-18. Whilst most boys enter the Junior School at Year 3, they can also join at other ages.

Warwick School is part of Warwick Schools Foundation, which also includes Warwick Preparatory School, The Kingsley School and King’s High School. As part of the Foundation, Warwick Junior School enjoys the benefits of belonging to a wider family of schools, including collaborative events and use of exceptional facilities across the 50-acre campus, such as our multi-purpose sports facilities, Warwick Hall and the Bridge House Theatre.

The physical closeness of Warwick Junior School and Warwick Senior School also enables effective pastoral and academic transfer between them. With many boys continuing from the Junior School to the Senior School in Year 7, this increased familiarity with both the facilities and staff helps to ease this transition.

Our boys are at the heart of everything that we do. We want to inspire and nurture them morally, spiritually, intellectually, physically and socially. As members of the Warwick family, we teach the boys the importance of care, courtesy, and consideration towards others, and make them aware of their wider responsibilities to their local community and beyond.

A school for boys

One of the many advantages of being a boys’ school is that we can tailor our teaching to best suit the ways that most boys learn.

Whilst no single approach will suit all learners, we understand that boys learn effectively when they are provided with practical opportunities to discover things for themselves. In an all-boys environment, students tend to feel more confident in exploring new experiences that they might be less inclined to pursue in a co-educational setting. With our small class sizes, we can foster each boy’s individual talents and enable each child to go above and beyond expectations.

Our hands-on approach to learning teaches boys to test theories, share findings, and develop negotiation skills.

This practical method builds knowledge, confidence, and the ability to succeed as adults. We encourage resilience, resourcefulness, and empathy, showing that mistakes are part of learning. With challenges at every level, boys grow comfortable with meeting new demands.

Our approach is based on four key priorities:

• Knowing the individual

• Excellence in teaching and learning

• Broadening horizons beyond the classroom

• Serving the community

Boys learn best when they know that they are valued, their interests are recognised, and their efforts are encouraged.

Knowing the individual

Warwick Junior School provides a warm, closeknit community, creating a family-like atmosphere which enables us to get to learn about each boy on a personal level. This environment cultivates strong relationships and mutual respect between children and staff, which helps us to understand their needs. We set out to understand each boy’s interests and support them to fulfill their needs; helping to foster a true sense of belonging that is so vital in their formative years.

We also place great emphasis on the role of the Form Tutor who knows every boy within their form as an individual. The Form Tutor is the main support and advocate for each boy, and in most instances, teaches the boys in the classroom as well as seeing them at three points during the school day. Form Tutors provide a vital link with parents, ensuring their son feels supported and their needs are met.

Celebrating achievements, progress, effort, and kindness are an integral part of our day-to-day life at Warwick Junior School. We conclude each week with a ‘Celebration Assembly’ to share successes from across all areas of school life and to inspire all boys to realise that, with a bit of hard work and commitment, success is always within their grasp.

Celebrating success

We know the importance of recognising talent and celebrating achievements.

At Warwick Junior School, there are many ways in which we promote the success of each boy throughout their time with us.

Throughout the four years in the school, all boys work through the Junior School Diploma. The Diploma challenges boys to explore new interests, engage with the community, and show real commitment to all aspects of school life. As the boys reach Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels, we celebrate their achievements and important milestones.

Through our weekly newsletter and when presenting boys with awards in assemblies,

we highlight and mark key moments in each boy’s journey. Many boys will receive Headmaster’s Commendations during the year; given for an outstanding piece of work.

All teachers seek opportunities to reward and mark the learning steps of an individual, both in their academic life and personal development. Through endorsements such as these, boys feel more confident in their abilities and become eager to take on additional challenges as no success goes uncelebrated.

Our highly qualified teachers have high expectations and strive for all boys to achieve excellence – offering support and challenge as needed to ensure that all attain their very best.

Excellence in teaching and learning

Academic excellence, personal progress, and a joy of learning are fundamental to a Warwick Junior School education. Our excellent teaching staff support boys in developing a depth of knowledge and understanding across the different academic disciplines.

As well as promoting the importance of knowledge, we recognise and promote our learning strengths – skills which need to be applied inside and outside the classroom. Our eight learning strengths are: independence, resilience, communication, empathy, responsibility, reflectiveness, focus and creativity.

During the first two years, boys are taught most lessons by their Form Tutor, with subject specialists teaching Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Art and Design, Computing, Games, and PE. As boys move into Years 5 and 6, they benefit from a full range of specialist teachers. This structure provides the close support boys need in the first two years, with additional opportunities and increasing personal responsibility in their final two years in preparation for the transition to Senior School.

With access to a range of opportunities, first-class facilities, and outstanding teaching, many of our boys achieve the highest levels in sport, music, and drama, as well as in the classroom.

Broadening horizons beyond the classroom

Enriching our pupils with experiences beyond their typical classroom lessons is a huge part of life at Warwick Junior School. Sport, Music and Performing Arts are key areas in which pupils can immerse themselves in, alongside partaking in a range of cocurricular clubs and activities.

We also encourage boys to broaden their horizons by taking on new challenges.

By providing unique programmes, boys are able to develop talents and learn new skills that they wouldn’t be able to elsewhere. The Junior School staff possess the knowledge, enthusiasm, and experience to develop and guide every boy to reach his full potential.

Sport

Sport plays a major part in many boys’ lives. We aim for excellence, but also recognise that all boys should have the opportunity to represent the school.

We have an extensive fixture list across all year groups, providing well-matched opportunities for competitive games. Many of our boys excel in sport and there are opportunities to play and compete at the highest level. Our main sports are rugby, football, and cricket; however, hockey is also played throughout the first two terms in Years 5 and 6. Our swimmers compete in national competitions, regularly achieving medals at the highest level.

Further opportunities exist for our golfers and athletes to compete in IAPS competitions. We share the same facilities as the Senior School, and through our dedicated and knowledgeable coaching team, boys can make the most of their individual sporting talents. Superb facilities such as the 3G rugby pitch, AstroTurf hockey pitches, an indoor 25 metre pool, and outstanding grass playing surfaces allow our boys the very best opportunities.

Through high-quality coaching, first-class facilities and a well-balanced fixture programme, we aim to ignite a spark in all pupils – whatever their sporting experience – to improve in, but most importantly to enjoy a range of sports.

The Junior School Music Department is a vibrant, exciting place to be, both for the boys and the staff who teach them. The variety of music that spills out from rehearsal and practice rooms each day is second to none, and the boys are very proud of what they achieve.

Music

Music is an important part of life at Warwick School.

On Thursday mornings before school begins, more than half of the school voluntarily make their way to choir practice. The size of the group - and their enthusiasm for singing - is testament to the boys’ commitment to, and love for music in the Junior School. This undoubtedly helps to shape their musical journey throughout their school life.

All boys learn a stringed instrument in Year 3 music lessons. This is the springboard to their musical development and the discovery of other instruments. With a rich array of groups and ensembles for boys to join, including our 50-piece orchestra; brass bands; jazz and rock groups; and classical guitar groups, there are plenty of opportunities to perform. From the more

informal teatime concerts to the showpiece end-of-term concerts in Warwick Hall, the musical life of the school is rich and varied.

In recent years, our boys have performed in Westminster Abbey, the Royal Albert Hall, Coventry and Worcester Cathedrals, as well as going on to achieve excellence in national music finals.

The Foundation’s unique partnership with Orchestra of the Swan, who reside on our Myton Road campus, affords a number of opportunities for pupils throughout the Foundation during the academic year. For our pupils, this includes having the chance to learn a variety of symphonic pieces, and perform them in concert, alongside pupils from other local schools in the Swan’s Primary Come and Play Day.

Performing Arts

The performing arts enjoy a high profile in the Junior School, with all year groups given a double lesson each week to explore drama, movement, and the spoken word.

The school hosts two major productions in our very own Bridge House Theatre involving all our boys in Year 4 and 6. Boys take parts either on the stage or managing backstage. Our boys are given

responsibility to affect all sound and lighting requirements as well as performing as part of the house band. Many boys further their interest by joining our LAMDA club and by performing in festivals or local productions.

Co-curricular clubs and activities

Our boys can choose from over 80 clubs and activities designed to develop new interests, to broaden skills, or to help achieve excellence in a particular area of school life.

The Junior School staff possess the knowledge, enthusiasm, and experience to develop every boy’s talents to reach his full potential. Whilst we celebrate excellence in whatever field, we also encourage boys to broaden their horizons and to take on new challenges.

We encourage all boys to discover new talents and demonstrate commitment. At Warwick Junior School, we have a vast

range of clubs that pupils can take part in. Opportunities such as joining Buggy Builders, Cookery, Kung Fu, Maths in Motion, and Young Engineers, or one of the many musical groups or sporting clubs, help to nurture and enrich Warwick Junior School boys’ lives. Our clubs run at multiple points throughout the school day; whether it is before school, after school or during lunch, there is something that represents all boys.

School trips

School trips are valuable for children’s education because they provide hands-on learning experiences that go beyond the classroom.

All year groups enjoy day trips and residential stays away from school. Having a range of trips taking place throughout the year enables students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, making lessons

more engaging and memorable. The lessons learned are just as valuable as those in the classroom. High-quality opportunities help boys to become engaged with every aspect of school life.

Today’s children are more aware of issues and environmental concerns than any other generation.

Serving our community

Throughout their time with us at Warwick Junior School, we empower our boys to make positive contributions to the community; locally and beyond.

Pupils take on a range of leadership roles including school prefects, school council, digital leaders, playground pals, and house officials. Through these roles, pupils across the school make positive impacts on the wider school community.

At the start of each year our four Houses elect a charity to support. The boys then publicise and fundraise, generating

significant sums for their chosen charities. Through support of local, national, international, and environmental charities, our boys are taught how they can make a difference.

One part to our Diploma programme is to encourage pupils to actively serve their community. This may include helping at events in their community, raising funds through sponsorship for local causes, or helping to collect food for local foodbanks. The act of giving or service is intrinsically connected to a feeling of selfworth through altruistic acts.

Year 6 and beyond

The Junior School provides the bedrock for future success.

Boys moving on from Warwick Junior School receive a firm foundation that prepares them for the next step of their journey and sets them up for life beyond Year 6.

Boys from the Junior School are already part of an established group of friends; they are schooled in ‘the Warwick Way’.

The wealth of opportunities in the classroom, and participation in clubs, music, and sport, provide our boys with the confidence to take on the new challenges ahead. Our boys leave as young leaders with open minds; inquisitive about the world around them and possessing the skills to make the most of further opportunities.

Facilities

The school has truly exceptional facilities, located on one beautiful, spacious site, adjacent to the River Avon and covering over 50 acres.

Expanding beyond its impressive façade, in recent years the school has invested over £30m in new facilities. The most recent investment is the extended and refurbished Warwick Hall, which is large enough to accommodate the whole school in assemblies and provides one of the finest school performance spaces nationally.

The sports centre includes a large sports hall with climbing wall, gymnasium, squash courts, 25m swimming pool, and a medical centre. The performing arts facilities at Warwick School are outstanding, including the purpose-built Bridge House Theatre –which seats up to 300 people – alongside Warwick Hall.
