PRESIDENT LOUISE N JOHNSON WAS AWARDED AN HONORARY DOCTOR OF DIVINTY DEGREE FROM WARTBURG COLLEGE ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 AT THE COLLEGE’S OPENING CONVOCATION.

From the President -

God is doing a new thing

Together with you, Wartburg Theological Seminary has been able to do the work to which we have been called. And for the generosity of the people listed in this magazine, we are deeply grateful to God.

“God is about to do a new thing.” (Isaiah 43:19) This verse from Isaiah is one we have been using in one of our board committees to focus the work we are doing as we look to the future. And as we have walked with you through this past year, we know that God is doing a new thing through you and at Wartburg Theological Seminary. We are excited to continue the work God has called us to do for the sake of the church and its witness to a world in need. We pray you will continue to be part of this ministry with us. We could not do it without you!

Maybe you wanted to honor a relative who was a WTS graduate. Perhaps you were profoundly influenced by one of our graduates. Or maybe you have a heart for the mission of the church and the education and formation of its leaders. Or maybe you are a graduate, board leader, or faithful church member… Whatever the reason, we are thankful to God for you. Without your generosity and vision for the future, we could not have finished a successful campaign. And while we are thrilled to celebrate that accomplishment with you this fall, we know that the real impact of your dollars and prayers is made visible in the students you are supporting and the leaders we are able to send into the church. With you we have been able to educate and form leaders for a church experiencing a clergy shortage of them. Last spring we sent out 44 graduates to serve the church. This fall we welcomed 84 new students into a variety of programs and paths for preparation. With your help, we will keep on finding new ways to make theological education accessible and affordable to women and men whom the Holy Spirit is calling to serve.

Thank you for your support of this ministry! We look forward to celebrating with you what God has done and continues to do! Together, I am confident we will do even more! In Christ,

Rev Louise N Johnson, WTS `99 PRESIDENT, WARTBURG THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

Dear Friends, Five hundred years ago, there was a Reformation; what an event! Translating and writing from Wartburg Castle, Martin Luther sparked an excitement that the church had never seen since its beginning. At Wartburg Seminary, that same excitement lives on! It is obvious in our: GRATITUDE that more and more friends like you know the meaning of the Reformation and are invested in the future of Christ’s church. EXALTATION that because of our generous friends, our 5-year campaign superseded its goal! CELEBRATION that classrooms can now be renovated to meet the needs of today’s instruction. JUBILATION that we can use new technology to form pastors and leaders more effectively and efficiently. EXCEEDING GREAT JOY that the incoming class of students is the largest in years. Of course, Wartburg continues its good stewardship (eight consecutive years of meeting balanced budgets, responsible use and investment of endowments, debt reduced, etc.). And at the same time, faculty and staff are establishing new programs (Collaborative Learning) and finding even better ways to prepare caring and effective pastors and leaders for the God’s church. Because what you see on the following pages would not be possible without you, we borrow the words of St. Paul: I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you… -- Philippians 1:1-2

Completion of 5-Year Engage God’s People Campaign

In July of 2012, Wartburg Theological Seminary Board of Directors and Board of Trustees launched the ambitious 5-year Engage God’s People campaign to raise $22 million. This endeavor was a both a bold and critical leap of faith for the future health and viability of the seminary. The campaign was designed to increase Wartburg Seminary’s capacity to meet the changing needs of our Church by investing in innovative technology and programs, growing the endowment, and strengthening the annual fund. Recently, the Board was elated to announce the successful completion of this campaign with over $23.8 million raised. The results of this success are already evident throughout the seminary. The distance learning technology and program have made theological education more accessible, and the newly implemented curriculum has enriched the student experience for the entire learning community. The greatly expanded endowment and scholarships provide greater financial assistance to students, and the increasing income from our annual fund are all part of what has made Wartburg a leader in theological education. Two Wartburg Seminary alums, former Bishop Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl and Rev Dr Stephen Cornils, provided leadership to this campaign in their service as co-chairs. Life Together asked them to reflect on their experience. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT LED YOU TO LAUNCH THIS CAMPAIGN FOR WARTBURG THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IN 2012? STEPHEN - With Wartburg Seminary’s expanding vision for mission, it was clear that we needed to enhance Wartburg’s financial wherewithal on three fronts: annual fund, capital improvements and gift expectancies through wills and bequests. The time was right to launch a campaign trusting in the integrity of our mission and the generosity of our donors.

Page 8 | LifeTogether + Annual Report of Appreciation

ANDREA – I remember my response was immediate and affirmative when President Stan Olson called to invite me to co-chair the campaign. Yes! This was an opportunity to give back to the institution that had trained and prepared me for a lifetime of service to the Church. As we began to meet and dive deeper into the context of this campaign, two things were clear. First, there was an ongoing and desperate need for leaders who were prepared for their vocation to serve our Church and world. Second, there was a need for an influx of financial support to undergird this important work of the Seminary. The time was right to address these great needs through a campaign. THE GOAL FOR THE CAMPAIGN WAS AMBITIOUS. CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED DURING THE CAMPAIGN? STEPHEN – President Stan Olson and the Vice President for Development both departed Wartburg during the campaign. These significant transitions for our staff and donors had the potential to derail our fundraising efforts. However, owing to the enduring leadership of the outgoing president and the diligence of our devoted Development team, we lost no momentum in the transition. President Louise Johnson, the new Vice President for Development, Paul Erbes, and his team inspired us to accelerate across the finish line. ANDREA – People traditionally like to give to things they can see, and since our campaign didn’t fund bricks and mortar, we had a challenge interpreting what we were asking people to support. Our vision was for the future, for preparing leaders in new ways and within new constructs differing from what seminary preparation had looked like for many years. Our campaign was unique in these ways, and the commitment of energy and clarity from our staff and leadership in presenting it to potential donors was truly an inspiration for all those involved. Our history of innovation served as bedrock for the campaign, and

“This campaign was not just about Wartburg. It was about, ‘What kind of pastors and leaders will we provide for our children, for our grandchildren?’” -Rev Dr Nelson Meyer, WTS`68 Chair of Foundation Trustees

Wartburg’s openness to God’s calling us to see the creative ‘new thing’ God is doing before us as we grew the campaign has been and continues to be a gift. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE STORY TO SHARE ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN?

the vastness of the prairie and the rural churches dotting it. The continuation of ministry in settings like those seems more possible because of this campaign and Wartburg’s creative innovation in preparing called leaders for the future. It was a memorable moment.

ANDREA – I thoroughly enjoyed going along with President Stan Olson and Development Officer Kathryn Franzenburg to points in Western North Dakota, a synod I had lived and served in years ago. One day, we had lunch with former Bishop, Bob Lynne, and his wife, Joanne, in Bismarck. Bob is a Wartburg alum, and he and Joanne have been generous donors over the years. The Lynnes’ enthusiasm and support for our effort that day was touching and genuine. It reminded me that my peers, other Wartburg alums, are deeply committed to the seminary like I am and are excited to join efforts to steward the seminary into a successful future. The significant donations to the seminary annual fund underscores this truth as well: we love this place!

STEPHEN – Rev Ray Legania, Assistant to the Bishop for the Metro Chicago Synod, who serves on the Wartburg Seminary Board of Directors spoke for all of us as he exclaimed, “God is good all the time! All the time God is good!”

STEPHEN - Eminent Southern California physician, Joel Streng (now deceased), and prominent Washington D. C. attorney, Steven Benz, grew up in Dubuque where for decades their sainted fathers, Professors Bill Streng and Frank Benz, epitomized both the heart and intellect of Wartburg teaching faculty in forming valued leaders. As an enduring legacy to their fathers’ vocation as professors, Joel Streng and Steve Benz with their families led the way in providing unprecedented lead gifts for the successful Engage God’s People campaign. Privileged and inspired to serve with Steve Benz and Joel Streng in Wartburg’s governance and fundraising efforts, I am reminded by their witness that we must repay to our children the debt we owe our parents.

ANDREA – To a certain extent I think we won’t know the impact for some years because the effect of our new programs and approaches will not have fully formed into the life of the Church for some time. In the meantime, I believe some of the impact is on our mindset, our energy, and our passion for the future. Look what Wartburg Seminary has accomplished in this campaign! This accomplishment will be an important building block and touchstone for us in the immediate future as well as over the longer view. I see God at Wartburg Seminary, and I see us listening, discerning, and responding to God’s call to that preferred future we long for. New generations of leaders will learn that same devotion to God’s call here, and continue the rich Wartburg tradition of innovation and creativity.

HOW DID YOU FEEL IN JULY OF THIS YEAR WHEN THE CAMPAIGN COMPLETION WAS ANNOUNCED AT $23.8 MILLION, SURPASSING THE $22 MILLION GOAL? ANDREA – I had just been driving down the interstate in South Dakota, appreciating the beauty of the prairie when Paul Erbes called. As we talked, he shared the good news about the campaign numbers. What a moment! I am so thrilled to have been involved in this campaign, and to have the honor of being a co-chair of such a successful effort is deeply gratifying. More importantly, I thought about

Page 10 | LifeTogether + Annual Report of Appreciation

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF THIS CAMPAIGN ON THE FUTURE OF WARTBURG SEMINARY AND WHERE DO YOU SEE GOD LEADING US? STEPHEN - Thanks to our generous donors and with exemplary leadership of President Louise Johnson and her most capable cabinet colleagues and our remarkably dedicated and versatile faculty and staff, Wartburg is in a much stronger place to dare great things for God!

Harvesting God’s Holy Mysteries By: Kristi V H Grieder, 2017-2018 recipient of the Selmer M & Hazel J Knutson and Barbara J Knutson Endowed Scholarship

After her mother, Hazel J Knutson, died in 2009, Rev Barbara Knutson endowed a scholarship for students at Wartburg Theological Seminary (WTS) to honor both of her parents in, what Knutson calls, a “living way.” Knutson’s generous gift is bourne out of her gratitude for the ways her parents grounded her in the faith since she was a little child. When Knutson was two-and-a-half years old she prayed the Norwegian Table Prayer by heart. Worship did not just take place at church, but faith conversations were a part of her daily life at home. Knutson’s sense of call to ministry grew with time. She recalls, “My mother told me that in early elementary school I was writing little sermonettes and hiding them in my chest drawer.” When she was a sophomore in high school, she felt a strong call to become a pastor. However, at the time, women could not be ordained. Still, she went onto study at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN where she took nearly every course in the religion department, including religious education. “I did what I could do at the time,” says Knutson. Upon graduation, she became a Director of Parish Education in large churches in Havre, MT, Middleton, WI, and Fargo, ND. During the Vietnam War, she says, “That’s when we had to be theologians.” During that time, she helped establish a youth program, “University of Faith and Life,” which focused on how to respond as people of faith with action in the world. In 1975, she was called as Director for Parish Support for the Division for Life and Mission in the Congregation of the American Lutheran Church (ALC). Knutson travelled across five districts from Northern Minnesota to the West Coast. She explains, “I would fly

out to these places two times a week. My job was to know all of the congregational life resources, listen, and be a part of leadership. It was a wonderful way to learn the diverse contexts of our church and appreciate them.” Knutson was later called to use her gifts in theological thinking and teaching to serve alongside Bishop Darold Beekmann (WTS alum) as Southwestern District Minister in the ALC as well as the ELCA for a total of 14 years. In this capacity, she would do a “3day live-in” at a congregation in the synod. Knutson says, “It was a way of being with congregations, listening to them, and helping them to discern faithfulness to the GosLifeTogether + Annual Report of Appreciation I Page 13

what I am doing.” It was time for chapel and she gathered for worship with the community. In the afternoon, she ran into Professor Norma Cook Everist in the hallway, who happened to be on campus getting a book, even though she was on sabbatical. Knutson says, “I had known Norma. She took me into her office and said, ‘Barbara, what are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I have my life on my mind.’ Norma responded, ‘What do you really want to be doing at 2 o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday 10 years from now?’” Knutson never made it to preaching class that day. She drove back home with the words of President Fjeld ringing in her ears: “If you believe you are being called to escort the Word of God in a community week-in and weekout, [WTS] is a wonderful place to come to.”

pel in their context.” After 3 days, she would present a snapshot of what they saw and ask, “Is this anything like the full movie?” When there was a crisis in the community, she would return and encourage the congregation, saying, “We know this is not your whole story.” Knutson says, “I was teaching all the time. That is how we built relationships.” After 31 years in ministry, the call to become a pastor that began as a child confronted Knutson again. As she was planning to host a 50th wedding anniversary for her parents, she reached out to their new pastor, Rev. Harriet Danielson, who had recently graduated from WTS. Knutson says, “She welcomed me. We began to be friends. We would go for walks on County Road C. She asked, ‘Isn’t it time you go to seminary?’ I responded, ‘No. My baptism is my ordination into ministry.’” But after 5 weeks, Danielson’s question would not go away. Knutson called the Admissions Office at Wartburg Theological Seminary to set up a visit and didn’t tell anyone from her synod staff. She thought, “If I could only go to a preaching class, then I will get it out of my system.” Knutson’s campus visit included a conversation with President Roger Fjeld, whom she had known in during ALC staff years. She told him, “’If I had a headache in the morning, afternoon, and evening for 5 weeks, I would go to the doctor. But I haven’t had a headache…Several times a day it hits me again: Is this the time to go to seminary? I don’t want you to talk me into it. I am not looking for another job. I love Page 14 | LifeTogether + Annual Report of Appreciation

The word, “escort,” as both a noun and a verb, has not left Knutson’s imagination since. She explains that to be an escort is “to bring the important one into view and get out of the way.” This has been seminal in all of her ministry—to be an escort for the Word of God. “God is already here,” she says. “Someone needs to say, ‘Behold, the Word of God. See.’” When Knutson went to the post office to drop off her application, the table looked like an altar. She prayed, “God, I am putting this on your altar and you can do what you want. I can’t figure this out.” Knutson graduated from Wartburg Theological Seminary in December 1995 and was ordained as an ELCA pastor the following year. She explains, “I had served 31 years. I could have retired. I ended up doing another 13 years in pastoral ministry. I retired after 44 years, but I flunked retirement.” Knutson has since served three congregations part-time, equaling a total of 51 years of ministry. She has recently begun her 5th year at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Black River Falls, WI, where she does pastoral care twice a week with people who are octogenarians or older. She preaches and/or presides twice a month. She still is teaching. But she has officially retired from meetings. Many people walked alongside Knutson throughout her ministry as a baptized Christian, even from an early age. She recalls that when she was four-years-old her church had a family night where she got to read her ABC Bible Storybook in front of the whole congregation. “But I couldn’t read,”

she says. “I was reciting it all by heart. The pastor who baptized me jumped up, turned to the people, and said, ‘What a voice! What a memory! Isn’t it too bad she isn’t a boy so she could be a pastor someday?’” At the 150th anniversary of her childhood congregation, she expressed gratitude to her late pastor by looking upward and saying, “Pastor Sweger, thank you for saying what you did out loud even though it has taken the church a quarter of a century to hear you.” Now, Knutson is passionate about encouraging the next generation of pastors. Not only does she support seminarians through her endowed scholarship, but she also she uses her gifts as a teacher to encourage and name the gifts of the youngest future pastors among her. At her retirement party, she gathered the children around her and said, “I am a retiring because I am getting older but we need others to replace us. There is only one place pastors come from—congregations—like this one. It could be you.” Knutson also has ongoing conversations with one of her 7th grade parishioners who has ministry on her mind. “We talk about how God’s Spirit works in her life and how to be faithful in the meantime,” says Knutson. When Knutson was invited to a high school graduation party for a student who had talked to her about ministry in 1st grade, she gave him a WTS keychain and told him, “You just never know when it might be the key to what you are called to do.” Knutson’s lifelong commitment to God’s church motivated her to establish the Selmer M. & Hazel J. Knutson and Barbara J. Knutson Endowed Scholarship. Her generosity pours from a place of gratitude—not only for her time as a student of Wartburg Theological Seminary—but also with gratitude for the long-standing Loehe tradition that continues to shape Wartburg to this day. “When I came to Wartburg, we got a folder the first day. The cover said Gospel, Church, Mission-- in that order. I knew I was in the right place. The Gospel forms the church, and the church is not the church unless it participates in God’s mission.” She continues, “The church needs resident theologians in the congregation more than anything else to help people think theologically about what they do. Otherwise, the church will be

another organization of its human makeup and human demise rather than being the organism of the living body of Christ.” One of the things Knutson most appreciates about Wartburg is their long tradition for asking open questions. This is why one can apply Gospel, church, and mission to new contexts. Knutson believes, “The Gospel will travel in the midst of those questions.” Knutson has stewarded the holy mysteries of God (1 Cor. 4:1) as a teaching theologian her entire life. In 1986, she was surprised with the honor of receiving a Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Olaf College for being a lay theologian in the church. In 2011, Wartburg Theological Seminary gave her the Living Loehe Award in recognition for her “dedication, quest for excellence, evangelical warmth, and servant devotion.” Knutson explains, “The wondrous holy mystery is how God calls, works with us, graces us, changes, picks us up, steers and guides us when we don’t know where we are going.” Lately, Knutson spends a lot of time talking about end of life issues with older people. “It’s the harvest season,” she says. Knutson’s late father, Selmer, was a farmer. “Any good farmer has one thing in mind the day one plants—harvest,” says Knutson. She continues, “Our culture talks about how elders are drain on society. I remind them, ‘No, that isn’t how God thinks. God thinks harvest.’” Shortly before Knutson’s own mother died, she remembers holding her hand as she drove her to the hospital. She said, “Oh, Mom, the trees look the way we feel—so dark and barren.” Her mother quietly responded, “But even in the dark, there is beauty.” They checked into hospice at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. That evening, Knutson and her brother stood on each side of their mother’s bed. They shared evening devotions with scripture and prayers, and sang their mother’s favorite Norwegian hymn—a prayer for the peace of God. Knutson remembers, “My mother placed her hand on my brow, made the sign of the cross, and said the entire benediction. She reached out to my brother, made the sign of the cross and said the entire benediction. She said, ‘It’s so good not to have pain.’ She gave us her beautiful smile and shut her eyes for the last time on this earth.” This, Knutson believes, is how we offer our lives back to God in the harvest— gratitude.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waterloo: Faith Is a Living, Breathing Gift!

After celebrating 150 years of faithful ministry in their community, the members of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IA faced closing their doors faithful that new life existed for their mission and legacy. They chose to trust Wartburg Theological Seminary with that faith. This fall, the first students started learning in the newly renovated “First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waterloo Classroom”, and if there’s one thing the members of First Lutheran want students to know when they learn in that classroom, it’s “that faith is a living, breathing gift!” For many members of First Lutheran, it is and has been the only church home they have ever known. Sandra Gardner, Treasurer of the congregation, has been a member for over 30 years and still considers herself a “newbie” at First Lutheran! At their recent 150th anniversary celebration, members shared story after story about kindnesses shown to them in both the joys of life and in tough times, through marriages, baptisms, confirmations,

and burying loved ones. Members of First Lutheran have known it as a place of hope, comfort, and above all – a place where the gospel of grace and salvation has been preached and modeled throughout its history. As members of the congregation discerned it was time to consider closing its doors and passing on their legacy, they wanted to find a way to honor the spirit of their membership and hope of their mission, “Faith to Ensure, Hope to Ensure, by Grace we are Saved.” The congregation was determined to hand off their legacy in a way that demonstrated faith in the future of the church. “By working with Wartburg Seminary,” Gardner recalls, they had the opportunity to “provide a learning space for current and future faith leaders that allows our mission to become our legacy – supporting faith, providing hope, and helping to develop leaders that will preach the gospel of salvation through grace.” The classroom renovation is now complete and an

endowed scholarship fund has been set up in the congregation’s name as well. In addition to the congregation’s gift to Wartburg Seminary, First Lutheran has encouraged members to continue their generous giving to the seminary through regular or planned gifts. Join us in our gratitude for the ministry of First Lutheran. Just as they have lifted up nine of their own congregants to become pastors, Wartburg Seminary takes on that legacy with great honor to continue lifting up leaders who will preach the gospel for the church and the world.

A Summer of Travel and Reflection The Eva Leo Project by: Professor Craig Nessan During the summer I was able to travel to Germany and had four varied experiences that connect to our life together at Wartburg Theological Seminary. First, I met with an art historian, Dr. Anne Kehrbaum, in Hannover, who works with certain congregations that are designated as Culture-Churches. These churches place special emphasis on reaching out to the wider community by creative sharing of the arts. In this regard, I originally met Dr. Kehrbaum due to her interest in the artwork of Eva Leo. You might know Eva Leo best as the artist who crafted the marvelous copper doors that adorn WTS. Lesser known is the story that Eva’s first artwork mainly involved communion ware that she designed and created for use by churches in Germany, many pieces of which have been catalogued by Dr. Kehrbaum. What brought Eva to the U.S. was her relationship (and eventual marriage) with Pastor Paul Leo, whom she followed to the U.S. during the 1930s when he, as one of Jewish ancestry, was forced

to flee from Nazi persecution in Germany. We are in the early planning stages of a research project to highlight the lives of Eva Leo, who became a German teacher (with whom I first studied German!) and Paul Leo, who became a Professor of New Testament at WTS. This project will include collecting high quality digital photos of Eva Leo’s art in the U.S. If you own or have access to pieces of Eva Leo art, please send photos, a description of the origin of the work, and your story related to Eva to me: cnessan@wartburgseminary.edu Second, I visited for the first time two major centers for diaconal ministry in Germany, Das Rauhe Haus founded by Johannes Wichern in Hamburg and the diaconal institutions at Bethel founded by Friedrich von Bodelschwingh. Prof. Beate Hofmann, Professor of Diaconal Science and Management at Bethel, was my guide for opening up these visits. There are many insights from the diaconal work in Germany and Scandinavia that could enrich the renewal of the diaconate in the ELCA. Together with our historic WTS connec-

nating perspectives. The other was my participation in a research seminar on the topic of Luther and the Jews. This has been a major focus of my own ethical reflection on Luther’s legacy in preparation for the Reformation anniversary. One conclusion is that we need to expand our teaching and learning in congregations about Luther’s catastrophic writings against the Jews and invite opportunities for interfaith encounters around this piece of Lutheran tradition. Fourth and finally, I was able to visit Zingst at the Baltic Sea, where Dietrich Bonhoeffer first led the Confessing Church seminary to prepare pastors for congregations in resistance to the Nazi regime. It was deeply meaningful to have this opportunity to remember and recall the program of theological education developed by Bonhoeffer to give these candidates deep spiritual and theological grounding for their church leadership in unimaginable circumstances.

tions to Diakonia in Neuendettelsau, founded by Wilhelm Loehe, we have many opportunities to broaden our imagination for the future of the deacon office in our context. Third, I attended the Luther Congress in Wittenberg for its meeting during this 500th anniversary year of the Reformation. While connecting with colleagues and hearing well known scholars in Luther research was enriching, two particular encounters were especially significant. One morning I had the opportunity to participate in a seminar with colleagues from China who are exploring for the first time different dimensions of Luther’s theology and ethics in relation to their Chinese context. These were fasci-

Faculty and Staff Updates PROFESSOR WINSTON PERSAUD, PROFESSOR OF SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY

Ms Susan Ebertz, Director of the Reu Memorial Library and Associate Professor of Bibliography & Academic Research, will be chairing an Association of Theological Schools Evaluation Team for reaccreditation of a theological school in California, Oct. 2-5. I’m not sure we’re supposed to mention the school’s name. Mr Paul Erbes, Vice President for Development, was awarded the “Certificate in Fund Raising Management” from the Lilly School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. The CFRM represents the successful completion of a multi-year study centered on the best practices, research and ethics of assisting donors in the expression their generosity. Rev Dr Martin Lohrmann, Assistant Professor of Lutheran Confessions & Heritage attended the International Luther Congress in
