Strength in Faith, Unity in Community: Reflecting on a Remarkable Year at Incarnate Word Academy
Dear Friends,
This year has been filled with positivity. Our seniors have shown outstanding leadership and our underclasswomen have been in awe of the traditions that will someday be part of their memories. From Homecoming to Ring Day, Rose and Candle, Baccalaureate and Graduation, the Women of the Word have been incorporating these traditions which the mission touts. The success of the Robotics and eSports teams, the participation in Campus Ministry and Student Council have been integral for students to achieve numerous accomplishments and growth.
Alumnae, parents, and friends who have observed State titles in volleyball, basketball and track have been overwhelmed with the IWA support that has encouraged the bond that keeps teams strong. However, there is another strength that cannot be overlooked; the strength of faith and community.
At the Basketball State Tournament in Columbia, MO on March 15th, Coach Dan Rolfes suffered a life threatening medical emergency. Coach faced many challenges after his heart attack, and the entire community was invited to a prayer service in the theater. Generations of parents, alumnae, current students, Board members, flooded campus to pray and show their support for the Rolfes family. There was a spirit in the theater that evening that is almost difficult to put into words.
The Holy Spirit was present as the Rosary was recited. The mission, which includes “following the example of Jesus,” emphasized the CCVI Sisters’ motto- “A Life for God. A Heart for Others,” which reverberated through the five hundred people who attended. The weeks and months following have been filled with examples of extraordinary compassion, grit, faithfulness and community as we continue to “pray” coach back to good health and IWA. Life lessons that have brought out the best in each Woman of the Word.
Incarnate Word Academy is a very special place. Since the school’s inception in 1932, “the word made flesh,” Jesus, has been present ever since. Those of you who are still emotionally connected to IWA, know that changes and challenges will never alter the reality and strength of “A Life for God. A Heart for Others.”
We ask that you continue to pray for the entire IWA community. So many graduates have gone out in the world and made a difference in their professions, their families, and friendships. You can be guaranteed that each of these former students “promote human dignity, empowering themselves and others to make a positive impact on our world.”
Praised be the Incarnate Word! Forever, Amen.
With gratitude,
Sharon L. Gerken ’78 President

Celebrating Legacy Honoring Four Generations at IWA
IIn the heart of Incarnate Word Academy lies a legacy that spans generations, a testament to the enduring values and traditions that define our beloved institution. Among the esteemed families who have woven their story into the fabric of IWA, the Meder-Foizey-Sesti family stands as a shining example of this legacy, spanning four remarkable generations. It all began with Margaret Kirby Meder ‘36, who laid the foundation for this enduring tradition within the family. Margaret, a member of the inaugural class of IWA, passed down her love for the school to her daughter Julie Sesti ‘68, thus igniting a flame that would continue to burn brightly through the years.
As we journey through time with members of the Foizey-Sesti family - Julie ‘68, Laura ‘96, Sunnie ‘27, the aspiring Red Knight Clementine Foizey, and their aunt Bridgette Fyvie ‘93 - we embark on a captivating journey through time, exploring the profound influence of IWA on their lives and
the passionate legacy they carry forward. The corridors of Incarnate Word Academy echo with the stories of generations past, each contributing to the vibrant history of our school.
For the Foizey-Sesti family, these halls hold a special significance, representing a legacy of tradition and dedication that has been passed down through the years.
Through cherished memories and reflections on the evolving landscape of education, the Foizey-Sesti family paints a vivid picture of the transformative power of IWA. Their commitment to preserving the school’s core values serves as a beacon of inspiration for future generations of Red Knights.
Join us as we explore the timeless essence of Incarnate Word Academy, guided by the enduring bonds of family and the rich traditions that continue to shape our community.

Passing Down Values Through the Generations:
For the Foizey-Sesti family, IWA represents more than just a school; it embodies a legacy of familial values and educational excellence. Julie Meder Sesti eloquently captures the sentiment shared by many in her family, stating, “I can’t talk about what IWA means to my family without crying.” She speaks of IWA as a beacon of family values and a nurturing environment that prepares young women to embrace the world with confidence and success.
Laura Sesti Foizey, a member of the Class of ‘96 and mother to Sunnie and Clementine, reflects on the unexpected journey that led her daughter to IWA.
Despite geographical distance, Laura’s husband was immediately captivated by the remarkable spirit of IWA while attending Laura’s class reunion, sparking a desire to enroll their daughters in the same institution. Laura’s decision was not driven by pressure to uphold a legacy but by a genuine belief in the transformative power of IWA’s education and community.
Nurturing Growth and Building Memories:
As the conversation unfolds, spanning across generations, each member of the family reflects on the profound impact of their experiences at Incarnate Word Academy (IWA). From Julie’s poignant recollections of an art teacher whose influence steered her towards sculpting to Laura’s gratitude for the school’s innovative modular system, designed to equip students with the skills necessary for higher education, the legacy of exceptional education and supportive environment resonates deeply.
Sunnie, recently completing her freshman year at IWA, eagerly shares her fondest memories, each imbued with a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Whether it’s the infectious spirit of Spirit Week or the poignant symbolism of the ring ceremony marking her journey as a Red Knight, Sunnie finds solace and joy in the traditions and rituals of her school. Through shared laughter and fun memories, the familial bonds nurtured within the walls of IWA extend far beyond mere blood relations, weaving a rich tapestry of sisterhood and unity that transcends generations.
Embracing Change While Preserving Tradition:
As the conversation delves deeper into the topic of change, Julie and Laura offer insightful reflections on the evolving landscape of IWA. Julie reminisces about the personalized approach to education in her era, where teachers meticulously tailored their teaching methods to suit each girl’s unique personality and intelligence. She emphasizes the school’s unwavering focus on nurturing young women of character and integrity, a timeless tradition that remains at the core of IWA’s ethos. Laura, on the other hand, draws attention to the physical transformations witnessed over the years. She fondly recalls the

days when the chapel doubled as the library, juxtaposing it with the current layout, which reflects the school’s adaptability to changing needs. Laura also notes the evolution of the uniform policy, from strict footwear regulations to the contemporary allowance of hoodies, symbolizing IWA’s ability to blend tradition with modernity. Additionally, she fondly recalls the beloved tradition of “beach,” now replaced by the vibrant atmosphere of Power Lunch, and celebrates the enduring allure of the theater building as a hub of creativity and camaraderie. Through their nuanced perspectives, Julie and Laura highlight IWA’s remarkable ability to embrace change while steadfastly preserving its cherished traditions, ensuring that each generation of Red Knights finds a sense of belonging and purpose within its hallowed halls.
Fostering Family Bonds Through Shared:
Laura’s sentiment about the profound impact of shared experiences resonates deeply within the Foizey family, spanning multiple generations of IWA alumnae. From Laura’s perspective, the bonds forged through common experiences, whether reminiscing about the quirks of the hallways or the excitement of school events, have cultivated a sense of closeness that transcends generations. These shared memories have woven a tapestry of unity, connecting Laura with her mother, sister, grandmother, and now her daughter, Sunnie. Sunnie, in turn, articulates the profound connection she feels with her family through these shared experiences, describing the fascination of recounting even the smallest details of classroom dynamics or the layout of lockers, knowing that her family members understand and relate to her
journey at IWA. For Clementine, the allure of this sisterhood, steeped in shared experiences passed down through generations, is undeniable. She eagerly anticipates the day when she, too, will walk the halls of IWA, following in the footsteps of her family members and immersing herself in the rich tapestry of sisterhood and tradition.
Looking Towards the Future:
As the interview draws to a close, the Foizey-Sesti family shares their hopes for IWA’s continued growth and impact. Julie envisions a future where IWA continues to empower young women to thrive in an ever-changing world, while Laura hopes the school remains a welcoming home for future generations, preserving its unique spirit of sisterhood and excellence.
In every generation of the Foizey-Sesti family, the legacy of IWA endures as a beacon of empowerment, education, and sisterhood. As Sunnie and Clementine eagerly anticipate their own journey at IWA, they stand as living testaments to the enduring legacy of a remarkable institution.
Looking Towards the Future:

Blazing Their Own Trail: The Unforgettable High School Journey of the Class of 2024
Although they started their journey during COVID, it didn’t stop them from completing their IWA journey.
The unconventional start of their high school journey in 2020 marked the beginning of an extraordinary path for these freshwomen. As the school year unfolded amidst the challenges of a hybrid learning environment, these spirited Women of the Word quickly discerned that a crucial aspect of the complete “IWA experience” lay in the daily connections forged with their fellow sisters on campus. Unlike previous classes who could reminisce about a preCOVID era, they were tasked with crafting their own high school narrative, fueled by a deep yearning for the sense of belonging that only physical presence could provide. Thankfully, with the dawn of the next academic year came a welcome return to normalcy, igniting within them an eager anticipation to fully immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of IWA life.
Fast forward to 2024, and every cherished end-of-year tradition unfolded seamlessly, enveloping the senior class in a wave of nostalgia and celebration. The festivities commenced on May 10, as the seniors gathered in the Multi-Purpose Room for a joyous breakfast, generously provided by the IWA Alumnae Association. Bedecked in red and gold ribbons adorning their graduation gowns, they proceeded to the theater for the iconic Rose and Candle Ceremony, symbolically passing on the leadership of the school to the Class of 2025.
The apex of their journey arrived on May 20, 2024, as the seniors gathered in the hallowed halls of Incarnate Word Academy Theater for their commencement. Mr. Pete Barrett, a revered social studies teacher in his final year at IWA, delivered an inspiring commencement address, weaving together words of wisdom and reflection.
Valedictorian Lizzy Laffold then took to the stage, delivering a stirring speech that eloquently encapsulated the collective triumphs and memories of their four-year odyssey. With diplomas firmly in hand, the Class of 2024 ceremoniously turned their tassels, symbolizing the culmination of their high school journey and the dawn of a new chapter.
Amidst the jubilant cap-tossing and photo sessions capturing cherished moments against the backdrop of iconic IWA landmarks, the graduates transitioned into a more relaxed mode. Shedding their caps and gowns for more comfortable attire, they convened in the MultiPurpose Room for the culminating event of the year – the senior lock-in. A fusion of laughter, tears, and reminiscing, the senior lock-in provided the perfect opportunity for the Class of 2024 to forge lasting memories and bid farewell to their beloved alma mater before embarking on the next phase of their lives.
May 19 witnessed a heartwarming congregation at St. Ann Catholic Church for the Baccalaureate Mass, where the entire IWA community united in gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon the graduates and their families.

Lizzy’s journey to this prestigious title is a testament to her unwavering dedication to academic excellence and her remarkable contributions to our school community.
Throughout her high school tenure, Lizzy’s passion for learning has been palpable. Fueled by an innate curiosity and a deep-seated love for knowledge, she has pursued academic rigor with zeal, embodying the spirit of intellectual curiosity instilled in her from a young age. Reflecting on her time at IWA, Lizzy fondly recalls the myriad of experiences and challenges that have shaped her journey, from managing the volleyball team to being crowned prom queen. Each moment has left an indelible mark on her path, contributing to her growth and development as a scholar and as an individual.
As Lizzy sets her sights on the horizon, she plans to continue her academic journey at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she will pursue her passion for chemistry with aspirations of attending pharmacy school in the future. In celebrating Lizzy Laffold’s remarkable achievements, we not only honor her commitment to academic excellence but also recognize her as a beacon of inspiration within the IWA community. IWA basketball teams secures National Record for most consecutives wins.
The cheers echoed through the Mizzou Arena as the Incarnate Word Academy Basketball team celebrated a monumental win. With a final score of 53-43 against Kickapoo in the Missouri Class 6 girls basketball championship game, the Red Knights secured not only their fourth state championship but also maintained a state-record win streak of 131 games.
However, amidst the jubilation, there was a palpable sense of something and someone missing. For senior Abbie Sextro and her teammates, this victory was bittersweet. “It’s not the same without Rolfes,” she confessed, holding back tears. Coach Dan Rolfes, the guiding force behind Incarnate Word’s basketball program, was absent, recovering in a nearby hospital after a medical emergency following the semifinal victory over Columbia Rock Bridge.
Yet, despite his physical absence, Coach Rolfes was omnipresent in spirit. The players adorned their forearms
with the rallying cry “Play4Rolfes,” while his daughter, Kate, stood by their side on the bench. In the stands, young fans displayed posters proclaiming their love and support for Coach Dan.
For the Red Knights, this game was more than just a championship; it was a testament to their resilience and unity. Fuelled by a determination to honor their coach and each other, the Red Knights took to the court with an unwavering resolve. Led by junior guard Peyton Hill and Kaylynn Janes, they dominated from the outset, establishing a commanding 32-17 halftime lead.
Despite Kickapoo’s valiant efforts to mount a comeback, the Red Knights remained steadfast, buoyed by the overwhelming support from their community. Acting coach Tanner Wilkenson praised the team’s resilience, emphasizing their collective strength and preparation.
In the end, victory was not just about the trophy or the accolades; it was a testament to the bonds forged on and off the court. As they celebrated amidst a whirlwind of emotions, the Class of 2024 at Incarnate Word Academy stood united, a shining example of perseverance, determination, and the power of teamwork.
#Play4Rolfes
As Coach Rolfes continues his journey to a full recovery, the IWA community extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and prayers. Together, they remain united in their unwavering support for Coach Rolfes, embodying the spirit of resilience and camaraderie that defines the Red Knights.
Victory number 132 will be the most significant, Coach Rolfes’ return to IWA!
