The Warren County 4-H Council is administering funding for YAIP (Youth Agriculture Incentives Program) sponsored by the KY Agriculture Development Fund. The Warren County Ag Development Board awarded the council $20,000. Any eligible youth who applies will receive a 50% cost share reimbursement of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $1500. Depending on the number of eligible applications will depend on total money received. All eligible youth applicants will receive the same amount. The application deadline is Friday, December 10 and recipients will be notified in early 2022 how much funding they will receive. Reports and receipts must be turned in no later than August 1 for reimbursement.

Don’t forget to enroll in the 4-H program! This is an on-line system that will allow parents/guardians to enroll their 4-H member(s) into 4-H completely on-line. Visit our website for more details: https://www.warrencountyextension.com/join-4-h. This is an additional step that all parents must do to enroll their child in 4-H and is different from the club sign-up. *Parents not wanting to enroll their child online can pick up a paper enrollment from their club leader or at the office.

Join teens from across the southern region for 4 days of fun in Crossville, TN on February 3-6, 2022 for the Southern Regional Teen Leadership Conference (SRTLC). This is a multi-state leadership event and is for youth at least 14 years of age. Event highlights are: Taste of States, T-shirt Swap, 4-H 4K, Leadership workshop, roundtables, community service project, pride of states, dances, camp fire and so much more!

The cost to attend is $205/person, checks payable to Warren County 4-H Council. The registration deadline is Friday, January 7.

Join Kentucky 4-H at the 2022 4-H Summit, a leadership conference just for middle schoolers! The event will happen at two of our beautiful 4-H Camps March 17-19. Warren County teens will attend at the West KY 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, KY. Teens and tweens will attend with their county delegation and get to participate in activities like 4-H T-Shirt Swap, Taste of Kentucky, 4-H 4K, Leadership Workshops, Community Service Projects and so much more! The cost to attend includes a 4-H Council scholarship and is $95 for the first 7 participants register and pay. More information is available on the Warren County Extension website. If you are interested in attending this conference for 6th-8th grade students, please contact Janet at the Extension Office.

Dream It. Believe It. Achieve It. The Kentucky Volunteer Forum will be Thursday, February 24- Saturday, February 26 at the Lexington Convention Center Hyatt Regency in Lexington, KY. Come for the workshops, networking, recognition, speakers, and seminars on wheels. This premier conference is unlike anything offered across the United States. Volunteers can choose up to 12 workshops to attend on Friday and Saturday and participate in seminars on wheels on Thursday. There is literally something for everyone. The Warren County 4-H Council will sponsor the $150 registration fee for the first 15 volunteers to sign up.

The early bird registration deadline is Friday, December 10.

The WCEO will be closed Dec. 24 - Jan. 2 for Christmas Break & Monday, January 17 in Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Curing country hams used to be the only way to preserve and eat hams throughout the year. This old-time tradition has been revived through the 4-H Country Ham Project. 4-H members who sign up for this project will get to cure two hams. Clifty Farms, a country ham facility in Scottsville, KY, will host this project. A big shout out to Tim Berry and his employees for working hard to make sure this program is a success.

Participants will go to the country ham facility 3 times to process their ham from March-July (ham selection, cure mixture application, washing and selecting 1 ham for state fair). Participants will also be required to complete six hours of training under a certified livestock leader and give a speech at the KY State Fair to complete their project. Open to ages 5 and up, including adults.

The deadline to sign-up is December 10. The registration fee is $60 (includes 2 hams) for 9-18 year olds and $40 (includes 1 ham) for 5-8 year olds and adults. Make checks payable to Warren County 4-H Council. Complete the ham contract included in this newsletter and turn in with your payment.

Congratulations to these great young leaders representing Kentucky at the National Poultry and Egg Conference held in Louisville, KY. They worked hard studying for this contest and it showed. The Avian Bowl team placed 5th in the nation (Elizabeth Johnson, Daphnica Wood, Isaac Hosay) and the poultry judging team placed 5th overall as well! Special congratulations to Jack Cushenberry for placing 12th overall individual and 3rd place in Market Poultry. Team mates Chris Robbins from Larue County placed 7th in Market Eggs and Brody Higgs from Larue County placed 8th in Egg Production. The team which also included Molly Duke placed 5th in Egg Production, 3rd in Market Eggs and 5th overall.

The written communication contest is open to all 4-H members.

The categories included are:  Songwriting  Poetry (3 line minimum and 25 line maximum)  “What 4-H Means to Me” Essay (minimum 500 words)  Original Monologue  Press Release (maximum of 1,000 words)  Public Service Announcement Some rules to follow are:  Each writing piece must be original. If there is a question, the participant will be disqualified. A statement of authenticity must be completed and attached to entry.  All entries are to be on 8" x 11" paper, with the entrant's class, name, and county on a cover page and last name typed on every page. (See sample cover page). Please include scoring guide, and statement of authenticity at the back of the piece.  Entries are to be double-spaced, typed with Calibri size 12 font white paper. (Songs may be single spaced within verses, chorus and bridge and double spaced between each of these.)  For more information on how to write Songwriting, Poetry, Press Release, Public Service, and Monologue contact the Julie.  Also you will need to contact Julie to get a copy of the cover letter, scoresheet, and statement of authenticity that will need to be submitted with your materials.

Warren County 4-H members will travel to the Capitol on Tuesday, February 8th. During Capitol Experience youth will tour the capitol, meet with legislators, visit committee meetings and watch the General Assembly in session. If you are interested in attending the Capitol Experience, please RSVP

During the KY State Fair, Warren County 4-H Poultry Club Members competed in various events including Avian Bowl, Poultry Judging and Showmanship. They were state champions not just once but SEVEN TIMES! Congratulations to our Junior (Jonas Hosay, Christopher Sweets, Layna Taylor and Jace Coles) AND Senior (Isaac Hosay and Jack Cushenberry) Avian Bowl teams who were state champions. Congratulations to the Hosay brothers, Jonas won state champion individual in Jr. Avian Bowl and Isaac won state champion individual in Sr. Avian Bowl. Christopher Sweets won state champion in Jr. Poultry Judging and Jack Cushenberry won state champion in Sr. Poultry Judging. Other results include: Layna Taylor- Reserve Champion individual Jr. Poultry Judging and Jack Cushenberry- Reserve Champion individual Sr. Avian Bowl.

Molly Duke- 3rd place individual in Sr. Poultry Judging.

All three of our seniors advanced to national competition that was held in November. Special thanks to 4-H Poultry Club Leader, Julie Sweets, for working hard this year preparing our kids or the contest. Also special thanks to Dr. Jacque Jacob and Dr. Tony Pescatore for helping them in their preparation for the contests.

Congratulations to these two Warren County 4-H Members. They are state champions in poultry showmanship! Christopher Sweets is Grand Champion in Jr. Bantams and Overall Reserve Champion. Layna Taylor is Reserve Grand Champion in Jr. Standard Fowl.

Isaac Hosay represented Warren County and the state of Kentucky at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA. Isaac was selected to participate in this trip when he received his Gold Achievement Award in March, 2021. During the conference he participated in leadership workshops, a community service project, and networked with 4-H members across the nation.

The District 6 4-H Horse Management Team hosted a trail riding clinic and trail ride at Mammoth Cave Horse Camp in Edmonson County November 12-14. Even though it was a bit frigid, members and adults learned about trail etiquette, leave no trace, safety, and introduced their horses to some big scary trail obstacles.

About 35 people showed up to participate in the clinic.

The event was such a success that another trail ride is planned for warmer weather.

We had a great 4-H Club Officer Training October.

Officers for the 2021-2022 year received their information and should be ready to perform their club meeting tasks. Congratulations to all who came and participated! Special thanks to Emma Browning, Kentucky 4-H Vice-President, for helping us with the training and bringing greetings from the State 4-H Officer Team.

Janet was contact for the District 6 4-H Trail Clinic and Ride.

By: Tyler Graham I conducted a community service project for Natcher Elementary by cleaning up their playground. Due to staffing constraints local schools lacked resources for keeping their playgrounds free of masks, water bottles, wrappers, bags from snacks and clothing. My team of six individuals including a teacher and a Bowling Green Police Officer assisted with the project. We were able to take the clothing and water bottles to the school’s lost and found. Our team left the area clean and ready for children to return to play. I received thanks from employees of the school for the work completed.

What would you cook if presented with rotini pasta or sirloin steak and only had 45 minutes?

That was the challenge our culinary team had to master when they competed at the National 4-H Culinary Challenge Competition in Dallas, TX. Our state champion team of Kate Ford, Andria Higdon and Josh Martin prepared a scrumptious dish for the judges, created a budget, and presented nutrition information about their dish. The team did an outstanding job and made it to the final round, a first for Kentucky! The team and their coaches, Sharayha Clingenpeel and Anna Sweets have put in countless hours preparing for the state and national events since June. Congratulations for a job well done!

The 4-H Cloverbud Camp will be held on June 24-26 at West Kentucky 4-H Camp. The Cloverbud Camp is open to 5-8 year olds and is designed for campers and parents who are not ready for a full week of a residential camping experience.

The cost has not been determined at this time but it includes meals, lodging, supplies and t-shirt.

While at Cloverbud Camp campers will still participate in all the traditional camp activities offered at 4-H Camp, including crafts, cooking, canoeing, swimming and recreation, as well as fun night time activities.

Julie serves as the contact agent for Cloverbud Camp.

Mark your calendars now for our annual trip to 4-H Camp! As always, camp promises to be so much fun! AND there is something for everyone! Camp is for youth 9 years old all the way up to 15 years old. We also need men and women to attend as adult camp chaperones. We like to think of this as a FREE summer vacation for adults! Registration will be available after March 1. If you are an adult and interested in attending, make sure to indicate your interest early. We are limited on the number of adults we can take. Anyone who would like to “GIFT” 4-H Camp as a Christmas present, please talk to Janet or Julie.

Warren County had five 4-H members to show at the KY State Fair Livestock Shows.

Results include: Beef ShowMadison Metzger won Division I showmanship champion and 1st and 2nd in Simangus/Simsolution heifer classes Tucker Metzger was Reserve Champion Purebred Simmental KY Proud Heifer and 1st and 3rd in Purebred Simmental heifer classes Sheep ShowAyda Doyle- 4th place in Division I Market Lamb Showmanship Emma Doyle won 8th place in Division 2 Market Lamb Showmanship Goat ShowEmma Thomas competed with her 3 market goats and did a great job!

Any youth (4-H, FFA or novice) interested in showing market/breeding livestock this year needs to inform their 4-H Agent or FFA advisor of their intent to show. In 2022 there are new rules on tagging animals and ordering KUIP tags.

Tags will be only be ordered by 4-H/FFA organizations. If you plan to show an animal, notify Janet Turley after the first of the year so that proper guidelines can be followed.

WINTER CANCELLATION POLICY

The Warren County 4-H Program follows the same schedule as the Warren County School System. If school is cancelled for the day due to inclement weather, all 4-H events and activities for that day and night conducted under the direction of your Extension Agents for 4-H Youth Development will be cancelled.

Our best advice for you is, if you are in doubt, contact our office at (270) 842-1681 or your volunteer leader before risking injury due to traveling in unsafe conditions.

What do Jordan Bartlett, Abbey Bouldin, Brenna Bouldin, Isaac Hosay, Piper Hosay, Maddie Kingery, Josh Martin, Madison Metzger, Tucker Metzger, Christopher Sweets, Anabeth Webster, and Bradley Webster have in common? They were all participants in the 2021 State 4-H Country Ham Program.

On August 19th, the state competition was held during the Kentucky State Fair. We are very proud of our 12 youth who participated this year and compliment them on the completion of their project.

Each of these youth received two cured hams, ribbons, premiums and the qualification to apply for a scholarship. Bradley Webster placed 1st in speech and 1st overall in 2002-2003 age division; Isaac Hosay placed 3rd in smoked ham, 3rd in speech, and 3rd overall in 2004 age division, and Brenna Bouldin placed 2nd smoked ham, 1st in speech, 1st overall, and division champion in 2011 age division Special thanks is extended to Clifty Farms and Scottsville Processing Plant Manager, Tim Berry, for their donation of expertise and the facility for curing of the hams.

From high chair to school lunchroom to work lunches, your children will have many chances to carry out good table manners during their lives. Teaching good table manners is one of the first steps parents can take to shape good behavior in their children. And people who eat together most days of the week tend to be healthier. Teaching table manners can start when the child is eating by themselves and old enough to sit at the table. In the early phases, teach kids not to reach across the table, to eat from their own plate, to put a napkin in their lap, and to say please and thank you.

Parents are the main role models for children. They can offer helpful support of good table manners at mealtimes.

Having family meals is the best way to model and teach good manners. This is also true when sharing a new food with kids. You can teach them to say kindly when they don’t like something. Young kids often can’t sit through the whole meal, but can learn how to excuse themselves, rather than cut short the meal for everyone.

Never try to change manners in a rude way. Make clear to kids why you carry out manners, such as why we chew with our mouths closed and put napkins on our laps. Each person should get a chance to be part of the upbeat table talk. Keep it bright and fun and talk about cheerful things at the table. Kids as young as 3 to 5 years old can get involved by learning to set the dinner table. Other rules, of course, are no elbows on the table, and, in today’s culture — no tech devices, phones, or texting at the table! Good manners are about respect for the household and can highlight the joy of eating. It is something that each person can do well.
