ESOP’S ZOOLOGICAL PARK BANGKOK, THAILAND CONCEPT: ESOP’S FABLE TYPE: KIDS ZOO AREA: 123 RAI (21 HECTARES)

Dusit zoo, the most popular zoo in bangkok, is facing a problem of animal’s health because Dusit zoo has limited area and worn-out management system so the zoo is not proper to adopt animals anymore. This project’s aim is to alleviate animals from Dusit zoo and give them an good health with larger area and more natural atmosphere The new site’s surrounding is residental areas ,schools etc. and the main user is children so another project’s aim is to give knowledges and principle to children.

The section show an idea of this project how to match a couple of animal that appear in Esop’s fable I choose the animal that has an obvious character and gave them their own zone ,the name of zone is the combination of their nature appearing in Esop’s fable and their habitat such as lion in “Formidable Field” ,Deer in “Innocent Hill” etc. Other animals that not have their own zone live in simulation forest on structure above the circulation and between 2 zones.

Esop’s fable is the story that have an animal as main character and each specie has their own role such as fox that always be cunning, peacock always represent a good manner and elegance Each episode of this fable has at least 2 characters which quite obvious so it can be easy to compare the characters and give children some principle. Bringing fables to the zoo is the way that can attract children by the real character and give them an principle at the same time.

MASTER PLAN

PLANTING CONCEPT To define each zone ,The Concept of planting rely on original nature of main specie of each zone. -Tropical Forest for Frogs. -Mangrove Swamp for Storks. -Lake for Swans. -Evergreen Forest for Apes. -Desert for Fox. -Hill for Antelopes. -Dome of Pine for Wolves. -Savannah Field for Lions.

STURDY SWAMP (STORK)

3 Zones having water as a part of exhibition ,Overrated Pond ,Sturdy Swamp ,Elegant Lake, are not flow together but absolutely separate from each other by service road ,Because quality of water in each zone is different.

Entrance which has the Esop’s exhibition and Esop’s monument is the most popular ,people always take a photo here when they arrive.

Meet the Zookeeper activity which children can dress like a zookeeper give them a knowledge about taking care animals.

Entrance of each zone is designed by concerning about universal design(where have stair ,have ramp).

FORMIDABLE FIELD (LION)

BEAR AREA

INNOCENT HILL (ANTELOPE)

Section show the relation between 2 species of animal. Bear area is situated between Formidable Field and Innocent Hill ,If the storyteller is at Formidable Field and walk to bear area ,he can make a strory “Lion and Bear” ,in the other hand ,If the strory teller is at Innocent Hill and walk to bear area ,he can make a story “Deer and Bear”.

The storytellers at bear area in the Innocent Hill start telling a fable to their child.

The walkway is sunk so the animal area can be cross the way that make the animal visible while tourists are in the sunk-way(also can be a sign of orientation).

Blue Time SINGBURI, THAILAND CONCEPT: LIVING WITH WATER CITY TYPE: URBAN AREA: 3 KILOMETERS ALONG THE RIVERSIDE

This site located in Singburi province, Thailand and situated next to the Chaopraya river has a problem from the urbanization process, Formerly this area has no building. The function of this area is being floodplain. When the number of population is grown, the need of residental area are also grown what leads to invasion to the natural levees, When buildings are constructed, this area can’t be floodplain anymore so the dam is built along the riverside that change the nature of this area forever Blue Time is a project that has a main concept to bringing back the old function of this area.

OVERLAY ANALYSIS

ROAD Existing road one is passed trough the site, another is situated along the river.

ACCESS This map show which area is easy or hard to access lead to locating activity area.

ELEVATION Elevation map show a potential of each area.

SEDIMENT AREA This map show nature of river morphology and water speed.

EROSION AREA The middle of site is an area that has high erosion rate.

EXISTING PUBLIC AREA This site has a few public area and doesn’t link.

GREEN SPACE Consisting of public green space and abandoned area.

DENSITY OF POPULATION Reflecting an infiltrator rate.

MASTER PLAN (WET SEASON)

MASTER PLAN (WET SEASON)

In wet season, Only the bottom of site was flooded because of low elevation. The area has a potential to be an ecological tourist attraction and model of resilience city because in each years ,there is obvious change so the tourist can notice living in dry season and wet season are different.

MASTER PLAN (FLOOD)

MASTER PLAN (FLOOD)

Some years, There is too much water in Chaophaya river that could be a result of seasonal monsoon, passing water by north area or breaking of dam. Other green areas can be flooded and drainage system can be connected together by the road located in the middle of site. The more retention surface, the more infiltration rate in the site that can decrease volume of run-off water so it’s easy for next riverside area to manage water.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM Taking a benefit of having road in the center of site ,This project use existing road as a swale that link detention area together. The road which situate perpendicular to riverline are used as water gate, letting water pass to the road located in the middle. Relying on the season ,water level is changeable related with elevation of water gate ,so detention area are changeable too.

ROAD AS SWALE

Properties of road using in the project are having the gravel strip to increase infiltration rate and having lower elevation than building so the road can perform as a canal when flooded. The concept of road is the same but size rely on density of building. (arranged from high to low density)

The road situated perpendicular to riverline and connected to water gate is the way that lead the water to the road in the middle of site. There are 4 gravel strips because a permeable surface like gravel can slowdown speed of water decreasing erosion rate of inner area.

The bottom of site is an argriculture area and park that have low elevation ,so it has a potential to be main detention area and education zone that give tourist a knowledge about agriculture farming and water management.

In dry season ,This area is a recreation park. People can play skateboard, bicycle etc.

In wet season, This area is flooded and function are changed to pier being another tourist approach.

In normal phase ,This area is a recreation park and can be argriculture market in harvest season.

The middle of site is an recreation area for people living in here.It doesn’t affect in wet season ,but when flooded this area can be changed to be detention lawn and link to other detention lawns by road situated at the center of site.

In flooded phase ,This area is changed to be detention lawn.

Walkway to the riverfront area is developed from abandoned area.

The middle of site which has an erosion problem is designed by using local material , bamboo is used as riverside wall and fragment of concrete from smashing dam is used as breakwater.

Nearby the existing temple ,There is an argiculture area which is developed to maditation area enclosing by concrete pavement with bamboo forest supplying bamboo to riverside wall. When Flooded, This area can be detention lawn too

WAT SUTTHIJITTARAM (SUTTHIJITTARAM TEMPLLE) LAMPHANG, THAILAND CONCEPT: BUDDHANIMISM (BUDDHISM+ANIMISM) TYPE: TEMPLE PLANNING AREA: 28 RAI (4.7 HECTARES)

Wat Sutthijittaram is one of the temple that participate in Wat Bandaljai project. Wat Bandaljai is the project that has an aim to develop temple in Thailand Wat Sutthijittaram is located on Lampang district, the north part of Thailand, that have many historical elements such as the belief, most of population respect to the ghost. The problem of this temple is disorder of existing building that not seperate private and public area.

Animism respecting

1912 B.E.Buddhism respecting

This timeline shows the beliefs of local people depending on values Although nowadays most people respect Buddhism respecting Animism still remain that leads to the concept to bring the old beliefs to life.

In Buddhism’s belief, There is one principle that affect most of temple design called “Tri-Bhumi” Tri-Bhumi compare temple orientation to universe which has the mountain called “Phrasumen” as a center and the sevenmountain call “Satthaboripan as a surrounding element The great direction in the belief is east-west direction so buildings that relate to Buddhism are set along this axis

CREMATORY In an old time of this site ,There is an ancient kingdom called “Lhanna” where the people believe and respect Animism affecting to town planning that has 3 parts, Headtown(gate) ,Middletown(market, plaza, residential area) ,Bottomtown(Graveyard) Lhanna kingdom has a belief about goodbad diection, Good direction is north and east, Bad direction is south and west In ths design ,Animism axis is situated along northeast-southwest axis.

This section cutting along the Animism axis ((red axis)) shows another pprinciple p that affect to site planning

Bringing an old principle of orientation by adding one axis that related to local people’s way of life ,Old beliefs are the main idea of this project Each axis is flown in itself but can be connected to another axis at the junction point.

Accenting the axis at the main entrance like a frame view by using the local material such as bamboo give tourists an impression

Sub entrance using by villagers is a shortcut to an area that relate to their routine.

Buddha’s biography area exhibit Buddha’s sculpture in different action, Each action and location relate to incident of Buddha’s lifetime

In red axis ,There is a spirit house located in middletown area where local people come to do the local rites.

The building called Ubosoth(chapel),building for praying and ordain ceremony ,is situated on the hill raised up to the sky

In the north of site ,there is monk’s resident that buildings are arranged by having court and tower of bell at the center to communicate between monk

MODEL CONSTRUCTION SKILL

RING-A-DING (INSTANT GARDEN)

Recently, Having green area in building is a trend but sometimes limited area and construction cost make it hard to happen Instant garden is an idea to make it easy to construct by its modular unit and lose less cost that relate to present people’s lifestyle.

Instant garden is not only used as a planting area but can be used for create space supporting any activities. An example area the unit can be used for divide space to any room that is changable relying on user’s needs.

Timber plate

Aluminium pipe

Timber pin

Rubber plate

The unit can be minimized so it easy to store when is not in use and the horizontal element seperating from the unit can be installed later

The units are not only used as a partition but as a shelf which user can place planting pot or plant a climbing plant to creat green wall also

With additional object such as wood pallet, curtain, sand box,Each room can has its own atmosphere and function, but parent can observe their children because of open wall

ALIVE FASCINE DESIGNING LIVE FASCINE (wiith watercolour skill)

At riverside area, There are valuable natural factor such as soil quality, wildlife, vegetation etc. because of being an ecotone ecosystem called “Riparian zone However, The area has a lot of erosion rate from stream flow and upland run-off water so Bioengineering is promoted as a solution which has potential and natural friendly properties.

Live fascine is one of Soil Bioengineering techniques which compose of a bundle of tree branches tied together to protect riverside erosion. The main concept is deconstruction of live fascine elements and changing it to different way

Fascine: a bundle of tree branches tied together that planting can be grown.

Live Stake: A part of branches which can grow up.

Dead Stake: Wood stake use as a pin to fix the fascine to ground.

Tie: An organic element which is degradable use for tie the fascine together.

Alive fascine consist of 3 designs of live fascine that have different function but can stand together being an complement to each others

Water current diagram

The Barrier is live fascine that situated underwater .The fascine element perform as breakwater slowing down speed of river current. The dead stake element using bamboo perform as riverline wall. These two elements can decrease riverside erosion rate.

The Carrier is live fascine that situated under wood path structure decreasing force from run-off water that affect the structure. Dead stake is developed to wood post.

The Infiltrator is live fascine that situated nearby the carrier to slow down run-off water From the constaint of life fascine that use a lot of branches leads to the idea decreasing use of branches by make the hollow fascine. Hollow fascine is made by using wood stick as a structure and wraping around with samall branches so the fascine can increase infiltration rate and promote sedimentation
