Move units to open the space in between

The dorm for Pratt Institute examines a new type of social relationships. Its spaces are organized according to the principles of layers between total privacy and publicity from the facade to the core of the building. In general, the units for individual students are separated from the mass gathering space, leaving atrium in between.

public room join in a grand public room for four. By staircases, these units are joined with the mass 2 floors gathering spaces, like kitchens and dining spaces. The first floor is for everyone staying in the building. There are a gym, a garden, and the security stall.

Appalachian Mountain Hut Instructor: Dagmar Richter




The hut is located in the Bear Mountain State Park, a protected area 60 miles from New York City. From the site which is on the south slope of the mountain, the skyline of Manhattan is visible. A great contrast is made when hikers staying in the primitive wilderness when the city is visible,

The hut is located on the famous Appalachian Trail, a long-distance walking trail paralleled to the east coast of United States. Meandering along the ridge of the Appalachian Range, the trail pass through the most untouched area of the area in the US, thus “leave no trace” is prioritized in the project. The goal of the project is to provide a space for hikers as a shelter. Base on the “leave no trave” protocol, the structure would impose minimum impact on the native flora which means that conventional constructions is limited. Construction materials could not be transported to the site via proper road. Their size has to be minimized. Digging and concrete masonry is imposible on the site. On the other hand, after the structure been removed over time, there should be no sign and

remains on the site left and the site should be as untouched as possible, The mountain hut is between a primative shelter for permanant stay of hikers and a full service hut with full service included. It’s ought to be a self-service style hut, with basic amenities includes a kitchen, a bathroom, bunk beds, rooms and public area.

The hut is constructed out of the principle of “automacy”. It can be transported and built by hikers themselves. Since the materials are required to be minimized under the clearance of a trail, they can be transported by hikers. The materials consist of triangular boards and metal poles. They can be assemble easily on site.

The boathouse is locating between the Columbia University campus that is privately owned and a park which is more public. It's in between a hill and water. The edge situation encourages programs to intertwine for more surfaces to interact. So I lift up the second floor to leave space between open.

The Crater of Light Hverfjall Museum


Located in the center of vast wilderness of Iceland, the museum is
