WANGARATTA HIGH SCHOOL
Wangaratta High School has had a great start to the year in the careers department. We now have a great space that students can come to have career conversations, get support with resumes, application letters and all things careers.
OUR TEAM:
Andrea is the Careers Coordinator, she is a qualified Career Practitioner and an amazing science and biology teacher. Andrea is in her second year at WHS and brings with her a wealth of knowledge.
Cate is the schools Career Practitioner and has been at WHS for 13 years. Cate has worked with students and youth for the past 17 years.
Cassy is the Assistant Director of Goulburn Ovens Murray region for the Head Start program. She supports students to get School Based Apprenticeship. Cassy is based at WHS and students are welcome to meet with her and find out about the program.
Jo is the Program Officer for G4C and supports students to become work ready.
As a team we work together with the students to gain work experience, structured work placement and school based apprenticeships. Our aim is to prepare students for university, TAFE, apprenticeships and to enter the work force with confidence and the skills for life once they leave school.
There will be opportunities for each year level to participate in career opportunities and activities through out the year.

MEDICINE, DENTISTRY, & ORAL HEALTH - YEAR 12 STUDENTS
If you are in Year 12 and plan to study medicine, dentistry and/or oral health in 2025, you may need to sit the UCAT ANZ (University Clinical Aptitude Test).
You will sit the test during Year 12 and selected universities use your UCAT ANZ results as part of the selection process, in conjunction with your ATAR and Year 12 results, and in some cases an interview.
You will only have one chance to sit the UCAT ANZ in 2024. It will cost you around $325 to sit the test, or $199 concession (costs may rise in 2024), and you will be able to receive your results straight away.

UCAT Preparation Programs
You have the choice to start preparing for the test early. There are several private companies that offer commercial preparation programs such as: NIE, www.nie.edu.au
MedEntry, www.medentry.edu.au
It’s important to note that private companies are not endorsed by the universities that use the UCAT.
MedEntry offers free resources such as a free UCAT exam, sample questions, and free bootcamp. Check these out via www.medentry.edu.au

A DAY AT MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY (YEAR 9 AND 10 STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS)

This day will be fantastic for students interested in university study. You will participate in workshops, tour the campus, and have an opportunity to speak to course advisers and current students.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS TOURS
The following two universities are running tours of their campuses during the term break. Students and their families can attend these. You can speak to the course advisers and student ambassadors during the tours and ask questions. The tours are relaxed and generally last for around 45 minutes.

AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF NURSING

WORK EXPERIENCE
MEDICAL RESEARCH (15+)
Applications are now open for the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) work experience program. Successful students will spend a week at the Institute exploring biomedical science and medical research. Students will need to organise their own transport and accommodation and a bursary may be available from the Institute to assist with costs.
Program intake weeks will run between:
17 – 21 June 2024
16 – 20 September 2024.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF MUSIC

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE
The Year 10 Work Experience (WEX) week is fast approaching, Term 2 week
5; Monday 20 Friday 24 May. All students in Year 10, 15 years and over, are expected to attend the week of WEX. This is a great opportunity for all students to have a go in the work place, spend time with professionals and to get an idea of what a week of work is like. The students have been working in their Careers Class contacting employers to secure a placement and have started on their safe@work Certificates.
All students and families were emailed the Work Experience Handbook that contains instructions on finding a placement, copy of the forms and how to get support it they require it.

Each year the Year 9 students participate in the Morrisby Career Profiling. This is a tool that supports students to make better choices about subject selections, vocational education and training, senior secondary school certificates and further study. This is provided free to all year 9 students who have been given permission from a parent or guardian to participate.
As part of the overall career planning process for young people , the career advisory service recognises the importance of learning career planning skills over time and of understanding an individual’s strengths and preferences.
