Council Corner Wandering Shire Monthly Newsletter

Election 2019 Following the close of the nominations on 12/09/2019—only two candidates were received for four vacancies.

The two candidates, sitting Councillors Judith Price and Graeme Parsons, were declared elected and were sworn in at the October Council meeting.

An Extraordinary Election is now required to fill the other two vacancies as per the Local Government Act 1995. Council have resolved that this election day will be :

Friday 17 January 2020 Important Dates: •

Close of electoral rolls is 5pm on Thursday 28 November 2019—this means if you would like to nominate to become a Councillor, or if you would like to vote at the election your name MUST be on the electoral roll by this date. You can check your enrolment by visiting: https://www.wa.gov.au/service/justice/administrative-law/check-your-electoral-enrolment

Nominations for Council open at 8.30am Wednesday 4 December and close at 4pm on Wednesday 11 December 2019.

If more than two nominations is received, voting will commence on Thursday 12 December 2019 and run until 4pm Thursday 16 January 2020 (the day before election day) at the Shire Office.

Election Day—Friday 17 January 2020—voting from 8am to 6pm at the Shire Office.

Both absent and postal voting will be available if you will be away during the voting period or cannot attend the Shire office to lodge your vote.

Works Update •

Work on the York William Road is progressing well with clearing and drainage work completed and major earthworks programmed to be completed by the 1 November. Gravel crushing for the final base course will be commencing soon for bitumen sealing in December.

General gravel road maintenance is still progressing with guide post renewal or reinstatement work being undertaken at the same time.

Vegetation clearing has been completed on Mission Road and will now cease within the Shire of Wandering until the end of the 2019/20 Fire Season restrictions are lifted Matt Sharpe – Contract Ranger Services will be starting Final Firebreak inspections from the 31 October 2019 so non compliant landowners can be issued an infringement notice and directed to make their property complainant with the Shire of Wandering Bush Fire Notice for 2019/20.

Traffic Counters are still in placed on the following roads as part of our ongoing data collection for road funding and maintenance work. Fourteen Mile Brook Road, Moramockining Road, Dwarda East Road, Carabin Road, Ricks Road, Pennington Road and Sheoak Road.

Health inspection has been undertaken a local food outlets within the Shire of Wandering by the Shire of Narrogin Senior Environmental Health Officer as part of the State requirements for operation at food premises.

Main Roads WA will be removing non compliant and old non required signage on the Albany Highway in November 2019 so to improve general directional and information signage into the Shire of Wandering.

SHIRE OF WANDERING PRESIDENT’S NOTE The Shire of Wandering’s October Council meeting saw the election of a new leadership team. I (Ian Turton) was elected as President for the next two years, with the backing of our new Deputy President, Graeme Parsons. As the newly elected President of our Shire I would like to cover just two topics at this time.

Firstly, I would like to thank our past President Brendan Whitely on behalf of our community for the time he has contributed to carrying out this task. Even a small shire like ours still requires considerable effort often taking precedence over personal or business time. I am sure that Brendan will continue to play his part in the capable group of councillors we currently have.

Secondly, the recently completed local government elections saw no new nominations for our shire. The recent retirement of councillor Chad Ferguson and the fact that for the last two years the Council has been granted permission to operate with only six councillors now means we are two councillors short. This fact probably sends a message to many outside our Wandering community that “all is not well”. This could not be further from the truth. The Shire of Wandering is currently in a sound financial position. However, this perception can only be addressed simply and without question by the filling of these two councillor positions.

The Shire has planned an extraordinary election to take place on the 17 th of January 2020 with nominations between the dates of 4 December 2019 and 11 December 2019. The question that members of our community now need to address is not “What can the Shire do for you?” but “What can you do to reinforce the sustainability of our Shire”. Current councillors and our CEO are prepared to go out of their way to explain any matters pertaining to serving on council and the initial nomination process. If you believe that you are unsuited to serving as a councillor but know of somebody that would be very capable please approach them or notify me and I will.

This matter is extremely important if the Wandering Shire is to continue as an autonomous body, all be it one of the small shires. I strongly suggest our community give this the attention it deserves.
