One of the preeminent boarding schools in the United States, Blair Academy provides students with a superior college preparatory education and rich community life. The school was founded in 1848 by railroad tycoon John Insley Blair, who was the institution’s principal benefactor for a half-century. Thanks to the generosity of his son, DeWitt Clinton Blair, who followed in his father’s footsteps by providing the funds to construct Clinton Hall and the gymnasium, Blair Academy grew substantially over the 19th and 20th centuries both in the size of its student body size and the acreage of its hilltop campus. More than 150 years after its founding, Blair Academy is honored to recognize its special connection to the Blair family by participating in the opening of Blairsden, which was built by John I. Blair’s grandson and DeWitt Clinton Blair’s son, Clinton Ledyard Blair. For more information visit www.Blair.edu.

How It All Comes Together
A
As General Co-Chairs of Mansion in May 2014, it is an honor to be continuing the Women’s Association’s 40-year tradition of hosting wonderful designer showhouses for the benefit of Morristown Medical Center. Mansion in May has a truly unique and impressive legacy. The Women’s Association has had our eyes on Blairsden since the first Mansion in May in 1974. We are thrilled to welcome you to this architectural masterpiece, an American treasure — our spectacular “home on the hill” for the month of May 2014! We are uniquely fortunate in the Morristown area to have so many impressive, historic estates, and for the past 40 years to enjoy the generosity of our Mansion homeowners, like Blairsden Hall LLC, who allow us to open their beautiful homes to the public for Mansion in May. We are grateful. But Mansion in May is about more than the house. It is about the people. It is about the good work of the staff of Atlantic Health and Morristown Medical Center in helping our community. It is about our patrons, our in-kind donors, and our corporate and individual sponsors who contribute their generosity in support of a worthy cause. It is about the creativity and dedication of our interior and landscape designers who bring each Mansion to life. It is about our vendors who find the most beautiful and unusual things to offer visitors. It is about the expertise and professionalism of our generous service providers who bring their best work to this ambitious fundraiser. And it is about the legacy of friendship and philanthropy that compels our 1,000 volunteers and 64 Mansion in May Executive Committee members to step forward and offer their time and talents to make each Mansion a wonderful reality. Mansion in May is about the people our cause will help. This year those people are the youngest in our community. There are two beneficiaries this year. The expanded Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Goryeb Children’s Hospital will care for sick children at their time of greatest medical need. A new Autism Center at Morristown Medical Center will have the expanded resources to help more
of the autistic children in our community, offering families an individualized plan across medical specialties. This multidisciplinary approach has been important for early diagnosis and comprehensive care of the whole child. These children, and those who care for them, inspire us. All of this is what makes Mansion in May possible, but there is also a secret ingredient, an intangible thread that ties everything together. That secret and most powerful ingredient is, quite simply, the spirit of good will, a spirit that is infused throughout every aspect of Mansion in May and found in the hearts of those who contribute to the Mansion’s success. Good will combined with a desire to make a difference — that is the secret of Mansion in May. We welcome you to Mansion in May and to become part of that spirit. We invite you to take in the gorgeous design, the history and majesty of Blairsden, and the views from the gardens. We invite you to dine in The Conservatory Café and to shop at The Boutiques at Blairsden. Please enjoy your visit to this remarkable home. Thank you for helping to continue the legacy that is Mansion In May.

A Message from the WAMMC President
O
On behalf of the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC), it is with great pride that I welcome you to Blairsden, our 17th Mansion in May. It was 40 years ago that WAMMC held its first Mansion in May, at Upton Pyne just across the ravine from Blairsden. Since that time, the signature fundraiser of the Women’s Association has raised over $8 million in support of worthy causes at Morristown Medical Center. This year we are pleased to support an expanded Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the new Autism and Child Development Center, the first of its kind to be built in New Jersey. WAMMC would like to recognize the generosity of the homeowner who has partnered with us, allowing us to showcase this magnificent property; to thank Anthony Sblendorio, founder and principal at Back to Nature Home & Garden, a tireless champion for the Women’s Association and Morristown Medical Center, and coordinator of the restoration of Blairsden’s impressive gardens; and to express gratitude to Blairsden project manager William Welch, who has organized the efforts of the interior renovation on behalf of the homeowner, returning the mansion to the beauty of a bygone era. In addition, WAMMC is grateful to the Borough of Peapack-Gladstone, the municipal officials and their staffs, the residents of the community and the neighbors of Blairsden for their support. We would like to acknowledge the interior designers, craftsmen, landscape designers and contractors, and their skilled teams who have transformed this historic property into a stunning showhouse and gardens. Mansion in May could not come to fruition without volunteers, starting with the dedication and enthusiasm of Prudence Pigott and Christie Gisser, Mansion in May 2014 General Co-Chairs. They have put together a talented team that has committed countless hours to bringing you a spectacular Mansion in May. A special note of recognition to the many selfless volunteers who give their time and expect nothing in return. Their reward is knowing that the care provided at Morristown Medical Center will be the best it can possibly be because of their contribution. With much appreciation to all of those who make the magic of Mansion in May possible. Enjoy your day at beautiful Blairsden!

WELCOME
Thank You from Atlantic Health and Morristown Medical Center
I
It is with great pleasure and appreciation that we welcome you to the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center’s 17th Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens at Blairsden. This marks the 40th year of Mansion in May, and this year’s showhouse at Blairsden promises to be the most spectacular event to date. With the support of our volunteers and the community and one of the most remarkable homes in the country, proceeds from this year’s featured mansion will fund projects at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, specifically the expansion of the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, enabling us to provide world-class care to the sickest children in our community — today and well into the future. Funds also will support a new Autism and Child Development Center, providing gold-standard testing for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as expert care, individualized treatment and compassionate guidance. The Women’s Association is one of the largest contributors to the hospital, donating millions of dollars to improve the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, the Emergency Department, the Palliative Care Center and the Valerie Fund Children’s Center. The Women’s Association also provides financial support through its Bargain Box thrift boutique and three hospital gift shops. As a volunteer organization, its members are responsible also for several service programs, such as providing art in public areas of the hospital, fresh flowers in the chapel, holiday decorations and scholarship funds for deserving staff. Since its inception in 1893, the Women’s Association has been dedicated to improving health care in our community. Today, that mission continues through your support at Blairsden. Thank you for making this Mansion in May another resounding success.

OUR BENEFICIARY
One Big House, Two Great Causes for Kids GORYEB CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AT MORRISTOWN MEDICAL CENTER
G
Goryeb Children’s Hospital has become a jewel for top-notch pediatric care in New Jersey. Over the years, the Women’s Association has been one of our most ardent supporters and has again stepped up to champion our cause. We are grateful because the upcoming Mansion in May fundraiser will be an integral part of plans to expand our footprint and our services; included are the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the Vanech Pediatric Inpatient Unit and a new Autism and Child Development Center. As our reputation for excellence has grown, we find ourselves increasingly at full capacity, forced to turn away children who need us. Or, in the case of children with possible or even established autism, the wait time for evaluations has increased almost everywhere while parental worries grow. Experience tells us that early intervention is key. As a state-designated children’s hospital, Goryeb is equipped to care for severely injured or ill children. We have capabilities others do not: including pediatric subspecialists and surgeons in all key areas, a dedicated pediatric emergency department (ED) and a pediatric intensive care unit. With these resources, we know children and their parents are in the best hands when they’re with us. That’s why it is so disturbing when we have a full house and can’t accept those who need to be admitted from our ED or transported in from other hospitals. A new eight-bed inpatient unit and three more PICU rooms will substantially increase our capacity to care for more children, but that’s not all. We then will be able to keep vulnerable, hospitalized pediatric cancer patients separated from the general population, incorporate an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for patients with complicated seizure disorders and build the latest generation of intensive care rooms for children. When it comes to autism, we intend to make a difference by developing a family-centered, affordable model of care. The new Autism Center will be designed specifically to help children with autism feel at ease, and the programming will provide parents with many of the answers they seek. We will expand the coordination of care among the multiple pediatric specialists often needed to care for these children and adolescents. Families will gain access to more diagnosticians and to a care navigator who will guide them through treatment and connect them to community resources. We also will train caregivers so families have the skills to work with their children without delay. Throughout the region, there are people who need us, and we want to welcome every single one of them here. With your contribution to Mansion in May 2014, we’ll be able to. Thank you for your support!

OUR BENEFICIARY Expansion of the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intenstive Care Unit
W
Why do we want to expand the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)? The answer is simple: Because of kids like Andy. He came to the PICU with pneumonia caused by an aggressive bacterium resistant to almost all antibiotics. It was destroying his small lungs. During his worst days, Andy depended on machines to sustain his body. One machine breathed for him, another improved his lung circulation and yet another monitored his heart function beat to beat. Multiple IV pumps provided life-sustaining medications through specialized intravascular lines. Our team of pediatric surgeons, pulmonary specialists, infectious-disease experts, cardiologists, critical-care nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, child-life specialists and social workers labored for weeks to save his life — and we did. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a whole hospital to save lives like Andy’s, and not just any hospital, but a “children’s hospital.” Our mission is to provide the advanced, cutting-edge care all children deserve. We are embarking on an ambitious expansion to increase our pediatric critical care beds so we will never have to turn away a patient because we are over capacity and so we can provide life-sustaining technologies of ever-increasing complexity. In short, we want to repeat Andy’s success a thousand times over. Thank you for helping us do just that.
Juan Gutierrez, MD Director, Pediatric Intensive Care Goryeb Children’s Hospital
A New Autism and Child Development Center
A
Autism can be a devastating diagnosis, made even more difficult as each family struggles to navigate the complicated web of essential services. Goryeb Children’s Hospital has become regarded as an expert provider of autism diagnosis and care for families in our area. As the number of children with this diagnosis continues to soar, we strive to increase our capacity to serve these families and meet the needs of even more children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our families have told us what is important to them. Parents are passionate about receiving early diagnosis, finding appropriate therapies and coordinating care. Others ask for support for their other children in learning how to deal with a sibling with autism. Some requests are as practical and life-enhancing as learning how to go out with an autistic child for a meal at a restaurant. We listen closely and are planning on providing a multidisciplinary approach to develop the answers and sometimes novel solutions to meet each family’s needs. In our new Autism Center, there will be a separate waiting room designed specifically to make the child with autism feel at ease. We plan to pioneer the concept of an Individual Treatment Plan and clearly define an action plan for each child we evaluate. The development of a staff position known as Autism Care Navigator will provide resources and guidance to families on their journey of providing an optimal program for their child. With an established Autism Center, families will gain earlier diagnosis, access to behavior therapy, coordinated medical care for the child as well as education, training and support. The numbers of children with autism are staggering, the need in our community is overwhelming and the time is now to make our vision become a reality. Thank you for helping us make it happen. Designed and constructed between 1897 and 1903 with later alterations, Blairsden was the magnificent country home of the family of C. Ledyard Blair, a New York financier, sportsman and commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Blair was a grandson of self-made multimillionaire, philanthropist and Princeton University trustee and benefactor John Insley Blair, who made his fortune in mining and building much of America’s railroad system.

Hailed as a feat of design, engineering and state-of-theart technology when it was constructed, Blairsden is one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the United States, a remarkable fusion of architecture and landscape design. It is a masterpiece of the renowned and influential New York architecture firm of Carrère and Hastings, which also designed the iconic New York Public Library and the Frick mansion, now museum, in New York City; the original United States Senate and House office buildings in Washington, D.C.; as well as commercial buildings, libraries, academic structures, churches and theaters in America and beyond. The firm was noted also for designing country and urban residences for many prominent American families, including the du Ponts, Flaglers, Harrimans, Aldriches and Sloanes.

Trained as a civil engineer before turning to landscape design, Greenleaf got his first important landscape commission in the late 1890s while working with the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm in transforming James B. Duke’s vast acreage in Hillsborough Township into a park-like estate. Later, as a member of the National Commission of Fine Arts, Greenleaf was instrumental in the landscape designs for the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., and the United States military cemeteries established in Europe after World War I. In addition to Blairsden, Greenleaf ’s landscape work in the Somerset Hills enhanced the Upton Pyne, Pennbrook and Wendover estates.

At Blairsden, Carrère and Hastings and Greenleaf created a formal Italianate hillside landscape. From the top, a stone-andbrick rampe douce led down from the main terrace to the orangerie with its arched French doors. From there, parallel rows of steps, separated by flowering plants and a gurgling rill of water, led farther downhill to a pool and fountain, beyond which were four long sections of ramps paved with small blue and white stones set in a symmetrical mosaic pattern. Lined on both sides by trimmed privet hedges, lawn and tall native red cedars, the whole design formed a dramatic axial allée running

from the house down the steep hillside toward Ravine Lake. The 20 formally landscaped acres around the house also included a large rose garden with pools overlooked by a brickand-lattice summer pavilion, an intimate walled garden with fountain adjacent to the main house, wisteria-crowned arbors overlooking the lake, and extensive waterworks including pools, fountains, cascades and water jets. To create the instant look of a mature landscape, more than 75 full-grown trees up to 60 feet tall were moved to the site by wagons pulled by teams of 16 horses. he Blair amily C. Ledyard Blair built Blairsden as a grand country retreat for his family and as the quintessential estate for lavish entertaining. Guests enjoyed elaborate parties, luxurious guest rooms, miles of bridle paths and coaching roads, tennis courts, an indoor squash court, “plunge” pool and Turkish bath, acres of formal terraced gardens with extensive waterworks, a hilltop belvedere with fireplace for cooler days, and swimming and boating on Ravine Lake at the foot of the hill.

Blair and his wife, Florence Osborne Jennings, had four daughters, all of whom had wedding ceremonies or receptions at Blairsden, with private trains transporting guests from New York City. Members of New York’s elite Coaching Club and Ladies’ Four-in-Hand Driving Club made several visits to the estate, often on Blair’s handsome road coach, the “Defiance,” pulled by teams of four matched horses. Ledyard Blair occupied Blairsden until his death in 1949. The 500-acre estate was then divided up, with the mansion sold to the Sisters of St. John the Baptist, who operated it as a retreat center. In 2002 the home returned to private ownership. Clockwise from top: C. Ledyard Blair’s crest. • Marjory Bruce Blair married William Clark on the terrace at Blairsden in 1913. Celebrating 40 Years of Mansion in May
S
Since 1974, the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC) has presented Mansion in May as its signature fundraiser. Over the past 40 years, Mansion in May has been held every two or three years and is now one of the leading designer showhouse and garden events in the country, welcoming thousands of visitors. Mansion in May 2014 at Blairsden promises to be a most spectacular event to mark this significant milestone in the history of WAMMC. Established in 1893 by Myra Brookfield, WAMMC is one of the largest and oldest auxiliaries in the nation. The mission of this dynamic volunteer group is to support Morristown Medical Center in advancing the quality of healthcare in the community. The Women’s Association fulfills this mission through fundraising endeavors and by providing caring services to patients and visitors. WAMMC raises more than $700,000 annually for Morristown Medical Center and is also one of the largest contributors to the hospital’s capital campaigns. In recent years, WAMMC has contributed $2.5 million to Goryeb Children’s Hospital, $1 million to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, $1.5 million to the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, $1.5 million to the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center and $1.3 million to the Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Cumulatively, WAMMC has contributed over $13 million to the Medical Center since 2000. Our success at WAMMC is not possible without a considerable volunteer effort. When you join WAMMC, you can be a part of Mansion in May and other exciting events as you support worthwhile causes for Morristown Medical Center. Visit our website at www.wammc.org or call (973) 971-5480 to become a valued member of our organization and to make a difference in our community. ABOUT MORRISTOWN MEDICAL CENTER

The Revival of an American Treasure for Mansion in May
F
For Anthony Sblendorio, founder and principal at Back to Nature Home & Garden, each project is unique — individualized by the property’s history, surrounding community, existing plantscapes and systems, and personal taste. His firm specializes in creating luxury outdoor spaces while improving the local ecology. His approach is to concurrently repurpose systems to be regenerative while designing an elegant surrounding for clients to savor. The team at Back to Nature is aware of the vital need to improve local ecological systems and is adept at offering solutions for properties of all sizes. From inoculated gourmet mushroom logs, residential bee hives and chicken coops to rain gardens, meadows and wetland restoration, Back to Nature helps clients greater enjoy their homes while doing good — and feeling good. Historic properties require an especially delicate touch — a keen eye and value placed on period relevance and perspective, while renewing and reviving the property aesthetically and beneficially for the local ecology. The Blairsden project has proved to be especially intriguing. Back to Nature has been afforded the opportunity to work with the new homeowner to help restore one of the country’s most significant estates. Says Sblendorio, “I welcomed the opportunity to connect the Women’s Association and Morristown Medical Center with the Blairsden homeowner to help tell the story of this great historic home and to reintroduce it to the public at Anthony Sblendorio Mansion in May.” Back to Nature Home & Garden

With an interest in historic architecture and building techniques and 30 years of experience in architectural restoration, William Welch, owner of BLDG 39., focuses on reconstructing buildings while incorporating dismantled structures. The design is informed by his large inventory of European and domestic architectural antiques and salvaged materials dating from the 17th and 18th centuries to 1920. Welch’s work at Blairsden began late in 2012 with direction from the homeowner to “freeze the house in time” by honoring the architecture, keeping it within genre. With this, his goal is to bring austerity to the house despite its grand scale, maintaining the grace of classicism. Says Welch, “I want to stay consistent with the voice of the house — the restoration will be a testament to the quality of the architecture.” When constructed at the turn of the 20th century, Blairsden was built around having a full-time staff. Today, Welch’s approach to its restoration includes designing more intimate living spaces for the new owner — the dining room and library will be scaled down; a smaller, modern kitchen will be created; and a new master bathroom will be added. The most involved renewal will be in the living room. Future priorities for the 30-acre property include restoring the orangerie, south terrace, and Italian fountains; relocating the Caesar busts; and adding a four-car garage. Welch is looking forward to Mansion in May’s reintroducing Blairsden to the community — the beginning of Blairsden’s next life. After Mansion in May, restoration will continue through the endeavors of his work, and the voice of Blairsden will live on for William Welch years to come. BLDG 39.

Revealing Layers What hidden treasures will be uncovered in this home ‌ I was inspired when I looked up and saw large chunks of peeling paint in the center of the ceiling (see before picture). The marble arches and carved details in the architecture beckoned an historical importance. Contemporary color and youthful vibrance is what I also wanted to add to this entry. So welcome to Classical meets Modern. I am exhibiting a Renaissance fresco-style mural, breaking away to reveal a modern design. The mural was created on a single piece of muslin in the art studio and installed on site. As with all of my murals, it can be easily removed and reinstalled after the show. a room of her own
A
Nearly a century ago, famous English novelist and critic Virginia Woolf told readers in A Room of One’s Own that creative women had a problem: not enough money and not enough locked rooms in which to work. Woolf, whose stream-of-consciousness technique and poetic style are among the most important contributions to the modern novel, believed that successful women artists in her day were in short supply because they lacked the financial means and the privacy necessary for the creation of their art. Upon entering “A Room of Her Own,” the visitor will step into a space that will stimulate creativity due to its beauty and purpose! One will be compelled to sit

Finishing Touch “Finishing Touch" is a serene room off the office for the lady of the house. This is where she can go at the end of her work day to straighten her hair, powder her nose and add a touch of lipstick. The paneling is elegant, the colors are inviting, the lighting sparkles and the accessories are beautiful and feminine. The painting adds color and playfulness. The restored sinks and Carerra marble countertop are true classics. The high point of the room is the custom-designed and -fabricated marble and limestone floor inspired by

As this room is the main entry space, it should reflect not only the grandeur and formality of the space, but also the beauty of the gardens and the beginning of spring. The overall concept for the room is luxurious textiles, bright, abstract art and beautiful flowers. Because this room wants little furniture, scale and quality are of the utmost importance. The original plans for Blairsden referred to this small space and attendant room as the “Brush-Up Room.” It was for the gentlemen of the house and included a water closet, closet space and a small cleanup room. Currently, William Welch, principal of BLDG 39., uses it as the site office for the restoration of Blairsden. Once the project is finished, it will serve as a small private office, coat room and water closet. SOURCES AND CREDITS BLDG 39.

Billiard Room Bjornsson Design has the honor of designing the Billiard Room at Blairsden. The room features an antique billiard table incorporated with a lounge area in front of the grand fireplace. Many custom-made and fine details are included in the space. Bjorn Bjornsson designed the furniture with unique fish leather from Iceland; the fabric for the window treatments from Taffard Fabrics has a customembroidered design; and the fireplace is flanked by custom-made accessories. A grand 24-light black Zenith chandelier from Baccarat hangs in the center with coordinating sconces throughout the room. Although the space is large, Bjornsson created an intimate setting that is complementary to the Old World character of the home and also appropriate for today with fresh and contemporary furnishings that

The bathroom located off the Billiard Room called out for warmth and sophistication. The stark white room, with its white marble flooring and white fixtures, contrasted with the dark, rich, masculine feel of the Billiard Room. Our vision included reconfiguring the randomly placed marble floor tiles. We salvaged, recut and polished the original tiles and laid them in an interesting and symmetrical herringbone pattern, giving the room more depth and interest. Restoring, replating and polishing all the original fixtures and accessories kept this room true to its architectural period and design. The wall colors and fabrics chosen bring the richness and feel of the Billiard Room to this space.

Enjoy a gentle breeze and allow your gaze to drift around the room and focus here and there on an elegant assortment of beautiful planters filled with greenery, the fountain, natural curiosities, and books and talismans collected over many years. A Woodland Dream Blairsden is one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture, combining classical architecture from ancient Greece and Rome with Renaissance design. The elaborate style is evident in the Main Hall with its carved French limestone, elaborate symmetrical details and grand archways. Gacek Design Group complements the Beaux-Arts design with an unexpected emphasis on the pastoral setting of this legendary estate. We have transformed the long cross hall into a restful open-air woodland where you are reminded of nature’s beauty in color and texture. Once inside, the 14-foot ceilings with elaborate plaster moldings and pilasters provide a tree-like quality to the space. Natural textures are used with a concentration of billowing floor-to-ceiling drapery that leads you through, guiding you to discover more of the experience. Classic elegance
is revealed with moody gray and silver tones, dreamy cloud-like whites and midnight blues. Soft metallic fabrics reflect the strategically placed lighting and give movement and life to the space. Branches are designed to glisten and sparkle. And the sizable artwork, reminiscent of Henri Rousseau, awakens the woodlands in a whimsical way.

Just as the Hall of Mirrors was the hallmark of Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles, my “Galerie des Glaces” distinguishes Blairsden with its respect for the architecture used to build this unique home. My overall design effect is in keeping with the original Beaux-Arts chateau-style of Blairsden. My choices for furnishings, fabrics and accessories are everything French, “mais oui!” Mssrs. Carrère and Hastings’ use of magnificent interior limestone inspired my wall treatment — grisaille, a centuries-old technique where tones and values of gray pigments are employed to depict three-dimensional images. My vision was to paint an idyllic country landscape inspired by Blairsden’s beautiful setting. The furnishings, fabrics and accessories are classic and yet modern and fresh. The walls are staged with gilded mirrors, (therefore, the “Hall of Mirrors” title). This and other gold accents add

The Blairsden Collection Collecting art is a love affair. It nourishes our soul and brings joy and memories to our lives. The breathtaking creations of the artists of Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery are the inspiration for the design of “The Blairsden Collection.â€? From the paintings of grand landscapes, blazing sunsets and busy streetscapes to the antique Persian rugs, the second-floor hallway surrounds visitors with beauty and luxury. Beautiful blown art glass, Murano glass creations and fascinating carved crystal are displayed in an ornate cabinet, while select pieces of sculpture, created from glass and bronze, sit atop pedestals carefully placed along the hallway. The Blairsden Collection is a celebration of the talent of local and international artists who bring beauty to this grand mansion and give visitors the opportunity to own a piece of art from the collection for their home or office. This bedroom was created for a spirited couple of any age who likes fine things with a dash of spice. A custom bed upholstered in a velvet stripe floats as the centerpiece in the room, and an exotic, bold linen print completes the ensemble. We’ve added a midcentury-style sofa where you can read or wait for your partner to add last-minute details to an outfit. A vintage cabinet is fitted with valet essentials to get you ready for work or out on the town. A custom desk sits by the fireplace so you can check important emails or Skype with loved ones who are away. An Equestrian Retreat

Mansion in May 2014
COURTESY OF THE DESIGNER
T
The design concept for our equestrian retreat was to capture the spirit of the Blair family’s love of their country estate as well as their love of riding. This warm and welcoming guest foyer reflects the bygone era of the Golden Age with a modern twist. Our predominantly masculine decor is offset by the beautiful floral linen fabric of the portières at the doorway, which adds a sense of history and femininity. Warmth and comfort abound with our organic palette of saddle and green. The saddle walls, as well as the pale blue ceiling, accentuate the exquisitely painted millwork. The floor plan was designed to encourage generous circulation in the space, while inviting the guests to enjoy a cup of tea or read a book at the end of an exhilarating ride. The custom artwork of the Blairsden grounds, as
well as the contemporary pastoral artwork, historic prints and subtle equestrian details, enhance our theme and complete our design for this guest foyer.

Then they happen upon a gallery of fine art that at once grabs them, bonds them with their hosts and fills them with the joy that will be their entrée to a superlative sojourn. Flashes of shared voyages, places, times past, present and future — all lavished with colors to nourish the soul, nestled amongst local images — will at once reassure them they, too, are at home!

the country life Life in the country is filled with fresh air, the sights and sounds of wild creatures, and engaging sporting events. The Danielle Ann Millican Inc. collection of original engravings and lithographs, hung on artfully painted walls, captures this lifestyle. The wildlife — ducks, pheasants, deer, rabbits — and gentlemen’s games — riding, hunting, tennis and golf — reflect a lifestyle of those to the manor born. Their dogs and horses are as much an accessory as the ever-present crystal shaker of cocktails. Ah, the country life. Inspired by the lush gardens and rolling hills surrounding Blairsden, Marilyn White of Patina Painted Finishes & Murals and Kathryn Sandelli of Studio K have enhanced the gallery with a tonal landscape mural painted in the cove molding and a

This room is inspired by thoughts of the many elegant and glamorous women who lived at or visited Blairsden in days gone by. The Blair’s daughter Marjory, whose wedding to next-door neighbor William Clark drew hundreds of guests in 1913, must have sought such a retreat. Silent film star Mary Pickford, in Poor Little Peppina (1916), which was filmed in part at this mansion, would have found this room inviting. Colors taken from its fireplace surround suggest languid afternoons of wine and chocolate, a lovely meeting of tastes. My goal has been to bring the room into the 21st century without turning away from its Beaux-Arts roots. The room is a study in contrasts. Objects are more appreciated when placed against a strong background. The merlot walls give visibility to the light furnishings. The contrast creates energy that transforms the

Deco in Bloom was inspired by American Art Deco design. By taking the roots of the past and planting current objects, we created a bedroom with all the characteristics of linear glamour broken up by curved ornamental elements. Although Art Deco originated in France, it was Herbert Hoover, then U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who sent American experts in 1925 to learn and adapt the French Art Deco to American architectural expression. This bedroom is a symbol of growth in a design that has been reawakened in 2014. In the words of Patricia Bayer, art historian on Art Deco Architecture and Design, our bedroom is “architecture of ornament, geometry, energy, retrospection, optimism, color, texture, light and at times even symbolism” — with shades of pink in bloom.

Morgan’s 9 to 5 A 21st century take on Mrs. Blair’s household is the inspiration behind Morgan’s 9 to 5. This sophisticated yet comfortable space is nestled between Mrs. Blair’s bedroom and her sitting room. It serves as a space for her personal assistant, Morgan, and her dog, LuLu. The furnishings are classic with a modern twist. Vibrant colors and a mixture of finishes create this energetic atmosphere. The kitchenette provides Morgan ample space to prepare light meals and beverages for her busy boss. It includes a paneled refrigerator, a wellness area for storage of medication and a sink for easy clean-up. The office area gives Morgan a place to check emails, charge electronics and keep Mrs. Blair’s changing schedule updated. The cabinetry’s carbon finish with mirrored accent doors is highlighted with a sparkling quartz countertop. The two areas are joined with a built-in plush bed
for LuLu to rest. A settee offers a place to daydream or read while looking out onto the beautiful reflecting pool. An acrylic table leads to a larger project space that is accented with a whimsical chandelier to create this beautiful work space.

Salon De Thé Upon her return from Europe, Paris in particular, our lady of the house yearned to have a spot for a cup of tea, delightful pastry and a tête-à-tête with dear friends. Here, on the second floor of Blairsden, is the room that commands the most spectacular views overlooking the front entry allée, reflecting pool and the mountains to the east. A soothing palette of ivory and gray accented by brilliant yellow exudes sophistication and brings joy to this corner of the house. At the windows a romantic fabric transports the natural world inside, while a noble animal bust stands watch over the entry. Four antique white bergère chairs upholstered in yellow velvet and black-and-white ermine fabric surround a silver-gray table that provides the perfect spot to enjoy afternoon tea, a game of cards and great

Grey Gardens’ Great Room My inspiration was a Grand House in the Hamptons called “Grey Gardens”— the style and class of a summer retreat owned by a cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. The great room was created with the casual splendor of Grey Gardens in mind. My use of comfort shown in the beautiful and lively fabrics, sisal rugs, timeless furnishings, blue and white ceramics, and unique artwork set a scene for how families live today. It’s a true story of American heritage and lifestyle. This room is a place where you can retreat — to read a book, watch TV, entertain family and have dinner with friends in an informal setting. Unwind and lounge in one of the seating areas — on the sofa, a club chair or the chaise. Enjoy dining by the French doors and enjoy the breathtaking view outside your window.
It’s time to bring back the Relaxed Elegance of a Bygone Era. Welcome to the Grey Gardens’ Great Room — a place anyone would love to call their own.

La Petite Rose La Petite Rose is a charming baby girl’s nursery pairing blush with calming neutral tones. The paneled crib is the focal point of the room, surrounded by a gorgeous canopy drapery. Long panels frame the window in a chinoiserie mural trimmed with an embroidered band. The soothing taupe walls offset the high-gloss blush ceiling. A damask motif area rug tufted in ultrasoft chenille sits on the original wood floor. The French chest is accented in gold with a series of glamorous Barbie prints and an oversized crown mounted above. A pagoda-style bookcase provides the perfect storage solution for all of baby’s toys. The child-size table and chairs are finished in an alabaster wood with soft pink velvet upholstery on the seats — a perfect setting for a future tea party. Southern Comfort Comfort and timeless style are the hallmarks of this Charleston-inspired living room. Charleston is a melange of many cultures — American, European, Caribbean, Asian — and the living room is designed to embrace this eclectic mix. From a transitional sofa and Chippendale mirror to contemporary art and British West Indies lounge chairs, the unique character of Charleston is evident in a fresh design. The color palette of grass greens, shades of cream and a pop of purple creates lightness and complements the incredible views of the rolling hills and countryside. The room is designed for family living with lots of seating, a custom library cabinet housing a media system, and art and accessories that create a personal, collected look. Furniture is arranged for multiple seating areas and the flexibility of pulling up an

Having a small space, I decided to stay with a monochromatic scheme. Using materials and other resources made available by California Closets of Fairfield, I incorporated different textured finishes such as wood-grained material, leather shelves and the Sirocco pattern printed on the mirror drawer inserts. I was able to create an attention-grabbing space while not allowing it to become overwhelming. Varying

Linen Closet “Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who is the fairest linen closet of them all?” The Linen Closet, when I first saw it, was drab and dirty. A forgotten small space. My vision was to open it up as much as possible and make it sparkle. Mirroring the walls was the key to accomplishing this vision and creating the illusion of never-ending space. I wanted everything to be as crisp and clean as new linens and the scent of fresh flowers. A design to awaken the senses!

Taking our inspiration from the Gilded Age, “The Upper Berth: Mrs. Blair’s Wardrobe” is designed with reference to first-class railroad cars and pays homage to C. Ledyard Blair and his railroad financing business. The oversized dressing room is updated and restored with original cedar cabinetry, new brass hardware and lighting consistent with Blairsden’s period architecture. To the left upon entry, a rich velvet cushion provides seating and above it are decorative brass hooks and an antique mirror. A petite chair is available for Mrs. Blair and her children to sit. To the right, a perfumerie displays all the accessories a woman of Mrs. Blair’s stature would require and enjoy. A glass cabinet designed to match the windows provides additional storage and display. The closet interiors resemble the luggage of the day. Above the closets we created an upper berth for discreet storage. The entry windows have embroidered sheer

La Chambre du Chiot (The Puppy’s Suite) The inspiration for this space came from the BeauxArts architectural style of Blairsden. Because the home already had so many bedrooms and the Blair family loved their pets, we decided to create La Chambre du Chiot, French for Puppy Suite. Off the atrium, our closet has come alive with an elegant yet fun wallcovering, FiFi and Friends. The furnishings and décor follow suit by establishing a master suite with all the comforts of home. A handcrafted metal bed, the lush fabrics, the warmth of the fireplace, and a touch of sparkle from the chandelier and the crystal treat bowl create a regal residence for your loyal companion.
Whether at rest or at play, your faithful friend will be soothed and relaxed in a room of his or her own.

An Art Collector’s Sanctuary The Atrium — with its beautifully molded details, illuminated ceiling grid and double-columnappointed corners, offering open space to long, wide hallways — almost makes us forget this is a room without windows. Art is a great means to transport us beyond our daily struggles; it reminds us of something greater and bigger. With that thought to inspire, I imagined this upstairs space as a private gallery and family retreat. For this, I referenced my experience with homes over 20,000 square feet and my visits to the world’s greatest museums, where I studied how art is meant to be viewed: beyond white walls, in rooms filled with quality and devoid of pretension. To me, definitions of home and interior design as a discipline involve the same principles as those that guide art: to learn about

Master Chambers My first impression of this room was that it would be a perfect Master Chamber. To create a very soothing and relaxing feeling, I chose a neutral palette complemented with layers of silks, velvets and embroideries. I also incorporated a Ralph Lauren wallpaper to take advantage of the beautiful millwork. My selection and placement of the furniture took into account the time period that the master would have used the room, only updated to today’s functionality. The king-size draped canopy bed softens the room with its inviting colors and textures. A mirrored vanity, a comfortable sitting bench in front of the fireplace and a sitting area all are situated to take maximum advantage of the extraordinary views.

Le Petit Pantry de Plumberry Steps away from the master bedroom lies a pantry like no other! A small, yet fully functional kitchen capable of fulfilling any request or appetite! Fresh hot coffee, espresso or cappuccino is easily accessible as Monsieur dresses for the start of his day. Maybe he has time to sit at the marble peninsula and enjoy the view and the fireplace as he reads the morning paper and listens to the stock and traffic news. The elegantly camouflaged refrigerator contains an undisclosed amount of cookie dough to cure Madame’s fervor for fresh shortbreads with her afternoon tea. On lazy mornings, Monsieur loves to prepare breakfast for his d’amour as they lounge in their chambers with hot baked croissants, frothing lattes, and berries and cream. All is within reach: a stocked refrigerator, induction cooktop, speed oven and a hidden dishwasher for easy clean-up. Even feisty fido has a special spot to quench his thirst, tucked away where no one will nudge his bowl.

Back to Black The vision for this petite and charming space was to create an intimate respite where you could enjoy a quiet moment with a book or an evening cocktail. Accented with personal treasures and travel mementos, the room is charismatically welcoming. An upholstered bench seat with throw pillows is flanked by bookcases, offering a place to rest and put up your feet. Blue and white china highlights the built-in bookcases, while the walls are decorated with goldframed artwork. Opposite this built-in sits another cabinet, this one acting as a serving or display area. The drama of the tall ceilings and window complements the crisp lines,
creating a polished contrast. The end result is sophisticated with a curious mix of bold and traditional elements.

A Blue and White-Russian Revival This cool and soothing space serves as a peaceful boudoir for the busy lady of the house to refresh and relax in while admiring nature and the glorious mansion and grounds of Blairsden.

The inspiration for this room comes from a romantic blend of historical fact and artistic fantasy — “Mrs. Blair meets Dr. Zhivago” — combining the beauty and elegance of Blairsden with the vision of a 19th century Russian country estate. This serene and luxurious sitting room — a breezy oasis that portrays a love for nature, art, animals and the outdoors — serves as a lady’s restful retreat, designed for creative pursuits and contemplation. The French doors are framed in timeless blue-andwhite floral chintz over embroidered sheers trimmed in crystal beaded fringe. Wallpaper of creamy neutral birch trees surrounds the room, bringing the outdoors in, while a desk offers a place for the lady of the house to catch up on her artwork and letters. The opulent mirror and inlaid settee add exotic luster to the room, a nod to the Russian penchant for decorative embellishment and detail.

Salle de Bain de Madame Castaing A European aesthetic informs every corner down to the ceramic tiles in the upstairs bathroom that were masterfully restored by Jim Del Nero of Empire Stone Care. This continental viewpoint is well-suited to the tastes of legendary designer Madame Castaing, whose fabrics, portraits and several objects grace this room. Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992) and her husband, Marcellin, were pillars of the artistic community of Montparnasse and intimate friends of such avant-garde artists and writers as André Derain, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Blaise Cendrars and especially Soutine. The Castaings led a very cosmopolitan lifestyle and were especially interested in antiques and interior design. Madame Castaing herself was a prominent antiquaire and interior decorator in Paris for more than 50 years. She is credited with introducing to France a new fashion
for eighteenth-century English furniture. In 1927, the Castaings met painter Chaim Soutine at the time of his first exhibition, and subsequently, between 1931 and 1935, he lived and worked during the summers at their mansion at Lèves near Chartres.

Marjory’s Retreat Inspired by Blairsden’s views of the rolling Somerset Hills of Peapack horse country, Marjory’s Retreat celebrates Mr. Blair’s eldest daughter Marjory’s zest for life. As an older sister eventually finds her younger siblings to be bothersome, meddling and pesky, this room serves as a special retreat, a getaway reflecting her love of nature, horses and her irreverent and quirky teenage attitude. The walls are covered in a continuous customdesigned watercolor mural. This collaboration between Kristina Bade Sweeney and Black Crow Studios successfully brings the estate’s gorgeous undulating outside vistas indoors. The room’s design gestalt is a smart combination of texture, color and materials. The playful pinks and purples keep the room youthful. This is balanced with familiar equestrian materials and textures such as

Being invited to design the most important room in a historically significant mansion is a true honor, and James Rixner is thrilled to debut his signature style in the Grand Salon at Blairsden. This impressive space was used originally for the most important formal occasions. The Blair family entertained heads of state, welcomed titans of industry and held significant family functions in this room. James’ design reflects an elegant mood suitable for such modern-day versions of these events. As a five-time Kips Bay Show House alumni, James is completely comfortable with design challenges, and this room certainly had many. His design employs a symmetrical approach appropriate to the salon, essentially creating a pair of mirror-image grand living spaces centered on each of the monumental fireplaces. The overall mood is

The Master’s Universe The Master’s Universe was designed so that even a library as grandiose as this could be comfortable, inviting and livable. While keeping with the elegant feel of the mansion, we gave the room a modern and fresh look that makes sense for the way people live today. As you enter the room, you see a grand library table and custom stools for enjoying the extensive collection of books. Centered in front of the fireplace is a large sofa and four comfortable chairs with a chic ottoman where guests can put up their feet or set an after-dinner drink. The back of the library is dedicated to the master of the home and includes a masculine desk with gold accents and a claw-footed chair fit for a king. Sprouting out from a lettuce chessboard, the Garden Keeper sculptures were designed to delight and surprise for their coming-out party at Mansion in May. They are French in feel, which gave rise to my designing a table of wrought iron and wood, a painted floor cloth with a garden-tool motif, dishes and linen napkins. The balcony next to the grand staircase seemed a perfect haven where one could be transported to a magical world. The original idea of a greenhouse of protection from the elements developed into a solarium. A custom scent by an international professional “Nose was created especially for this space. My landscape architect is also a Feng Shui expert, so there was a lot to be considered before finalizing the design. Lettuce has been growing from seed in shifts at a local greenhouse to provide a fresh supply for the month of May. A chandelier seemed only

Blair Lounge Blair Lounge, in the Main Hall of the mansion, is a beautiful space for guests to gather around the impressive, tall limestone fireplace while admiring the handsome turn-of-the-century sconces and classic art within the limestone panel walls. The room calls all to gather for conversation before cocktails or await the announcement for dinner seating in the formal dining room. Classic-style upholstery with updated fabric patterns creates an interesting scene of color against the marvelous limestone walls. The room’s proximity to the main entrance, library, dining room, solarium and veranda make it the perfect interim gathering area for meeting friends in an elegant setting of beautiful art and accessories.

The Kitchen at Blairsden Trained at the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, architects Carrère and Hastings created Blairsden — the preeminent Beaux-Arts country estate in the United States. The home was a culmination of the utmost in modern design concepts and conveniences for its time while remaining true to a Louis XIII aesthetic. Because the kitchen was designed for a full domestic staff, it was configured much differently than today’s residential kitchens. Taking aesthetic cues from Blairsden’s rich architectural past, Canterbury Design has repurposed the kitchen to do it all — from everyday family living to a cook’s refined culinary instrument ready to prepare gourmet dishes for many guests. Paying homage to Blairsden’s design aesthetic, the cabinetry details are subtle and refined. A clean and

Blairsden ... A Work in Progress
A
As you step into space 48, you are transported into the process of renovation and experience a glimpse of the progression an architect/designer employs when working with a client. From removal of walls to the brick “bones of the room to restoring original exterior walls while updating with period French doors, you see how the space becomes suitable for a modern life. The goal here is creating a private enclave for the homeowner near the center of any home, the kitchen. BLDG 39. focuses on reconstructing entire buildings while incorporating dismantled period structures. The design is informed by a large inventory of 17th century to 1920 architectural antiques and salvaged materials, both domestic and European, as

you see with the intended mantle for the revealed fireplace-to-be in this petite study. View the process behind creating the beautiful, ornate moldings of the Beaux-Arts period that has been employed throughout this grand mansion. Restoration of damaged moldings in the dining room and upstairs atrium as well as the intricate main staircase dome and the grand living room have all been accomplished through this technique. See the decision process as it is presented from designer to homeowner in selecting the details that create an intimate space. Choices of moldings, paneling, fabrics, flooring, lighting and more factor into the final assemblage of the room.

Un Petit Voyage The utilitarian luxury of a steamer trunk served as the inspiration for this intimate bar and serving station, evoking the spirit of nostalgic elegance that Blairsden epitomizes. Embossed ostrich leather in a rich cream accentuated with nickel nail heads envelopes the ceiling and walls, while horizontal bands of cherry unite the two spaces into a coherent and singular whole. Recesses and shelving lined with antiqued mirror along with faceted crystal sconces add light and depth to the space.

The Belvedere Belvedere is Italian for “beautiful view and is an architectural structure built in an elevated position to provide lighting and ventilation and to command a fine view. Roofed but open on one or more sides, a belvedere may be located in the upper part of a building or may stand as a separate structure. It often assumes the form of a loggia, or open gallery. (Encyclopedia Britannica). Scott Salvator will create an outdoor sitting and dining room in the Blairsden belvedere using his flair for linking house, garden and landscape through the vistas, axis and lighting effects. Playfulness and whimsy are present in every Salvator project, as well as glamour, drama, theater and something new. The ghosts of Oliver Messel, Inigo Jones, Kubrick and Carroll Clark are always felt too.

The restored 300-foot Reflecting Pool is lined with the busts of 12 Roman Caesars original to the property and surrounded by rows of large maple trees. COURTESY OF MANSION IN MAY
The new concept for the front entry design captures powerful foundation plantings of Taylor red cedars, boxwoods and Knockout roses that complement the rhythmic and symmetric beauty of Blairsden’s architectural features. This planting system is inspired by the original landscaping palette and layout of the estate and now serves to both soften and strengthen the impression of a breathtaking entryway. Walled Garden Blairsden was once a place of vast land, hand-raked roads and luxuriant cutting gardens, all tended by a cadre of workers. The new concept for the gardens focuses on a much simpler palette with an emphasis on geometry and the memory of a grand landscape. Flowers limited to planters and a more architectural feel of lawn panels, clipped boxwood and a focus on sculptural elements will replace the Victorian past. The Walled Garden will be reduced to a central panel of turf, central water feature and broad walking paths of dark stone. Please see the Back to Nature ad on page 12

Designers are inspired people. We look at nature and see lines and patterns. We taste food and see color. We hear music and see the earth rise and fall. The Blairsden Brocade is the collaborative effort of members of APLD, the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Inspired by a world of experiences and global travel, together we wove this flower carpet. Reach out today for your own inspired landscape. Designers were Susan Cohan, APLD, national APLD president; Jane Derickson-Friar, APLDNJ president; and Helen Grundmann, APLDNJ, NOFA.

L5 Golden Age of Garden Ornament Blairsden is one of the quintessential historic properties in America. A 1904 author wrote, “The owner is a man of culture, and possessed of a fine appreciation of art and art values: there was great wealth, there was a fine site — for Nature had already made the frame that awaited only the creative touch of the designer.” In my case Blairsden had a significant influence. It was one magnificent estate: a Louis XIII-style house and garden that, more than any other playground, had an irresistible attraction for me. A few times, as a child, I secretly circumnavigated the locked entrance gates and scaled the clifflike hills surrounding the house to peek through the trees at Blairsden’s formal garden. I was not alone in my admiration. Wilhelm Miller wrote in 1911, “I have only seen one other large garden that seems to me to have made important contributions toward an American-

style of formal garden. That is Blairsden. It has the real Italian garden magic ... the charm that is not dependent on flowers. The real spirit has been transported and actually adapted to BEFORE American conditions.” All of our team is thrilled to participate in Mansion in May, particularly me. L6 Le Déjeuner en Provence Lunch in Provence is enjoyed at a leisurely pace, where one unwinds and treasures the moment. Aside from the outstanding hilltop vistas, the ancient architecture and the perfectly yet simply designed gardens, little compares with dining al fresco on a Provençal terrace. Good cuisine and wine are enhanced when enjoyed outdoors with a beautiful view. Pea gravel in muted tones of gray and brown is the base material for nearly all patios found in Provence. The furniture is rustic and plantings are simple, not to compete with the beautiful views beyond. The location of Blairsden, with its views of the distant green hills, is reminiscent of the hills of Provence, however, this

lovely outdoor living space can be created in anyone’s backyard. The designer, Susan Olinger, APLD, recently visited Provence and is eager to share the garden inspirations she discovered there in her upcoming projects.
