W

hen my career began in 1974, I learned by doing. Northeastern Iowa is a visually stimulating place, and, living there, I drew the things around me. The places that I

drew became the subjects of my etchings. Evolving from looking at places came seeing.

Seeing meant that from daily observation and translation through drawing, I developed the skill of looking at the world in terms of two-dimensional design. Ideas are of great importance, and, as an artist, being able to communicate those ideas is of the greatest importance. This is something that I have attempted throughout my career. Looking is something that I was born with. Seeing, and communicating what is seen, is something that has been learned.

About Larry Welo Larry Welo is an American painter and printmaker, born in 1951 in Hibbing Minnesota to first and second-generation Norwegian parents. He attended Luther College as an art major from 1970-1974. Following graduation, Welo immediately began his career as a professional artist, pulling inspiration for his work from observation of the Northeastern Iowan landscape. His work developed from simply drawing what he saw to a sophisticated interpretation of everyday life and the world around him. He married his wife, Patricia, in 1978 and moved to Minneapolis, MN, where he lived and continued to develop his work with fuel from the new adventure of living in such a boisterous city. In 1994, Welo and his wife moved to southern Wisconsin where he is now well established with his studio in the renovated “Opera House” of Blue Mounds.

Larry Welo’s art is represented in a long list of recognized art galleries throughout the US and in Europe. His last exhibit was held in September 2015 at Gulden Kunstverk Gallery, just outside of Oslo, Norway.
