Since 1974, The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College has received national acclaim for its innovative approach to education. Graduates from any of our four majors Culinary Arts, Hotel Management, Pastry Arts, and Restaurant Management, often jump start their careers and enter the profession in managerial positions. We offer an interactive educational experience in a bustling restaurant environment in the heart of University City, Philadelphia - home to one of the largest student populations in America.

Refund Policy: A $10 processing fee will be applied to all refund requests. A refund will be issued for a class up to one (1) week prior to class with an original receipt. If class has begun and you wish to cancel your registration on the first night only, a 50% fee will be assessed. No refunds will be given after the first night. We do not give refunds or transfers to “no-shows” or missed classes. Transfers and credits will be permitted with no processing fee if class is changed from the college. A $ 30 fee will be charged for all returned checks. All Gift Certificates and Gift cards are nonrefundable. Information on all Classes Should The Restaurant School cancel a class, you will receive a full refund. Gift Certificates are non-refundable you must mail in the original with the form. The Restaurant School reserves the right to cancel or limit the size of any class and to alter its curriculum, ingredients, Chef, recipes, tuition, fees and policies as deemed necessary. Missed classes cannot be made up or refunded and classes are non-transferable. You are required to bring your own cooking utensils to all hands on cooking class for Pastry and Culinary Arts classes. All of the Community Education courses, with the exception of programs such as the Youth Summer Cooking Camp or Junior Chef Classes, are for individuals eighteen years of age or older. CERTIFIED SPECIALIST OF WINE This certification is widely recognized and regarded by the international wine and spirits industry. The Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) Exam is a rigorous exam, which tests a candidate’s wine knowledge and mastery of key elements within the worlds of viticulture and wine production.

About the Program The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College’s Certified Specialist of Wine (C.S.W.) course prepares students to attain the CSW credential. The course encompasses an advanced “Grapes to Glass” level of knowledge expected of the wine professional. The Program focuses on the professional aspects of wine knowledge and beverage service. The twenty classroom sessions, consisting of presentations, videos, component tastings, a special seminars will cover the all the material required to successfully pass the Society of Wine Educator’s Certification Specialist of Wine Certification exam.

SWE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS The Society of Wine Educators offers several certification programs: the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS), Certified Wine Educator (CWE), and Hospitality/Beverage Specialist Certificate (HBSC). Through its certification examinations, the Society of Wine Educators validates wine and spirits knowledge. The CSW, CSS, and CWE are certifications and not certificate programs. Accordingly, successful candidates are entitled to add the appropriate post-nominal to their professional signature.

PROGRAM COSTS & INFORMATION

SENSORY EVALUATION is a major component of the Professional Wine School training. Students will gain tangible competency through a systematic tasting of over 120 wines. Through blind tastings the student will learn the techniques necessary to successfully identify grape varietals and regions. Additionally, through continual and controlled wine tastings the student will become skilled at analyzing, describing, and assessing a wine’s quality. Objective: By the end of this program the student will be able to:     

Assess major components such as acidity, sweetness, and structure Identify winemaking techniques Recognize viticulture factors Evaluate quality and type Ability to accurately assess and describe the color, aroma, taste and texture of particular wine Ability to identify major varietals Ability to identify wine faults
