A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERS

As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with gratitude and pride for the resilience, impact, and growth of the YMCA. This year, we continued to strengthen communities, empower individuals, and provide spaces where all people can thrive.

A YEAR OF IMPACT AND INNOVATION

In 2024, the YMCA remained steadfast in our mission to support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of our members, volunteers, staff, and partners, we achieved milestones that continue to shape a brighter future:

Access for All - As one of the largest health and human service organizations in the Greater Wallingford community, we are proud to serve one out of every five residents, ensuring that individuals & families have access to the resources they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Empowering Youth - 579 youth & teens participated in State of Connecticut licensed YMCA programs, from early childhood education to college and employment readiness initiatives. Health & Wellness for All - Our wellness programs expanded to serve over 10,000 individuals, ensuring access to fitness, mental health resources, and chronic disease prevention.

Community Strengthening - Through partnerships and advocacy, we provided over $356,000 in financial assistance, ensuring no one was turned away due to financial hardship.

Best in Class Employer - With a dedicated team of 277 employees, we take pride in fostering professional growth, workplace well-being, and career development. We also continue to be the largest employer of youth in our community, we are proud to offer first-job experiences, leadership training, and workforce readiness programs that empower young people for future success.

STRATEGIC ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR A STRONGER FUTURE

To ensure long-term sustainability and impact, we have implemented key strategic initiatives:

• Fulfill the YMCA’s vision to expand the West Side YMCA with an Aquatics Center to do more and serve more.

• Expand the YMCA’s footprint and deliver programs and services in new Geographic locations.

• Invest in the YMCA’s 16 Wallace Street property with innovative programming for youth, seniors and families.

• Optimize the YMCA’s branches to deliver high quality programs and services.

LOOKING AHEAD

As we move into 2025, we remain committed to building stronger, healthier communities. With a renewed focus on accessibility, sustainability, and innovative programming, we are excited to continue shaping a future where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Thank you for being a part of our YMCA family. Your passion and commitment inspire us every day. Together, we will continue to create positive change and strengthen the foundation of our communities.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

OUR MISSION

As a charitable organization, our mission is to strengthen the foundation of the community through programs, services and relationships that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.

We aim to be an effective resource and influential community partner by building meaningful, caring relationships and promoting healthy, productive lifestyles for generations.

OUR COMMITMENT

Over 80 years ago, the Wallingford Family YMCA opened its doors to welcome our community in its collective pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Day after day, year after year, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to delivering lasting personal and social change to every individual, regardless of ability. Pursuits develop and needs evolve, yet our responsibility to bring together and strengthen our community has endured with clarity and purpose.

Our Y has been a cornerstone of the community since 1944. We have woven the story of how individuals and families learned to swim, prepared for school through early childcare programs, were safe and nurtured through before & after school programs, adopted healthy habits and rehabilitated from the discomfort of chronic disease. With two locations in Wallingford, it is a hub of wellness where 9,106 members come together to collectively strengthen mind, body and spirit. Each year, over 12,000 people come through the doors to connect with their "Y Family" in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Today, our community seeks solutions to complex challenges as individuals pursue the same goals of healthy mind, body and spirit. The Y will respond with the same unwavering commitment to community that inspired the establishment of our organization.

OUR CORE VALUES

Our core values drive everything our staff & volunteers do to live out our mission and make a meaningful and long lasting impact in our greater Wallingford community.

By holding ourselves accountable to build character around our core values, we build healthy spirit, mind and body FOR ALL.

CARING

We demonstrate sincere concern for others, their needs and well-being

RESPECT

We treat others as we would want to be treated and value the worth of every person

HONESTY

We tell the truth and demonstrate reliability & trustworthiness

RESPONSIBILITY

We do what is right and are accountable for our choices & actions

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

All kids deserve an opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. We believe in the potential of youth and teens and see every interaction as an opportunity for learning and youth development, grounded in our YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. From cradle to career, the Y provides all youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life.

Through our early child care at our YMCA Learning Communities at Choate & Masonicare, we provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other. We maintain and strengthen what starts at home, giving all families the support they need to succeed.

Our School Age Growth & Enrichment (SAGE) program is located in all 8 elementary schools and offers safe, fun and engaging care before & after school. Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School (ELMS) provides after school activities and educational enrichment for students from both Wallingford middle schools.

Swimming is a life skill and youth swim lessons help children build confidence by floating, putting their faces in the water, kicking, learning arm strokes and more. To increase water safety across Wallingford, we run our Safety Around Water program to help kids learn skills to be safe around water.

Children thrive in our youth sports programs, as they learn confidence and teamwork. From Munchkin Soccer to Youth Dodgeball, there is something at the YMCA to get every kid active, no matter what their interest. The Wallingford Family YMCA Dolphins Swim Team helps swimmers of all abilities reach their highest potential. Every member of the team develops commitment, dedication, teamwork & a love of swimming.

Camp Ulbrich has it’s more successful year yet, with over 458 kids making friends, having fun and experiencing the adventure of a lifetime at camp. With STEM taught by CT STEM Academy, swim lessons, all-camp competitions, field trips and more, Camp Ulbrich always offers campers the opportunity to meet & overcome new exciting challenges.

In Upward Bound, students in grades 5-12 and recent graduates, grow & develop in a constructive environment with positive role models. Youth are challenged to reach past their limitations with decision-making opportunities, recreational activities, and positive self-expression. In doing so, our hope is that they will grow & learn about themselves in a multitude of aspects in their lives, becoming better equipped with the life skills needed when faced with everyday challenges. The goal of the Upward Bound program is to create an atmosphere where kids feel safe, valued and free to express themselves.

HEALTHY LIVING

We help individuals & families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind & body in their daily lives. We provide programs & activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health, for kids, adults, seniors and families. These programs and everything else the Y does are in service of building a stronger, healthier Wallingford every day.

Health is more than getting your heart rate up - it’s about building community while you do it. The Y is a place to make friends, network and more. With brand new, state of the art equipment at both branches, we offer personal training and a mix of group exercise classes to suit the needs and fitness levels of everyone in Wallingford.

Annual events, such as Scuba Santa and the Easter Egg-stravaganza, give parents & children much needed family time to bring them closer. Our free senior seminars & events play a vital role in promoting social connection, mental stimulation, and physical well-being among older adults.

LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

Healthy Hearts, our Stage IV cardiac rehab program, teaches participants how to continue a safe exercise regime and how to progress independently so they can maintain this new routine for life.

Fit-to-Go is our response to the growing youth obesity crisis. Middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition, developed a focused & realistic workout program they could stick with, had tons of fun doing healthy activities, made new friends and felt better about themselves.

With Race4Chase, we provide kids with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon. They get expert instruction in swimming, cycling, running, strength training and flexibility, and also learn the fundamentals of good nutrition, under the supportive guidance of coaches. Race 4 Chase strives to empower kids to reach their full potential. It brings together kids from all different backgrounds and educates them on how to adopt a healthy lifestyle, coaches them to develop a foundation of athletic skills, and inspires them to aim high in sports and in life.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We know that when we work together, we move individuals, families and communities forward. The Y responds to Wallingford’s most pressing needs by developing innovative, community-based solutions to help those in need to reach their full potential. We are also committed to inspiring a spirit of service by uniting individuals from all walks of life to participate in and work for positive social change.

Everything we do at the Y does is in service to make ourselves and our community better. From athletics, to education, health services and safe spaces, we fill the gaps where society falls short because we believe everyone deserves the chance to thrive.

Through our Community Support Campaign, we continue to raise funds for our Membership for All financial assistance program that ensures our doors are open to all to who need us the most. We are proud of our heritage and commitment to make our character-building, family-enriching programs available to everyone in our community. Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders and businesses who believe in our purpose. With Membership for All, these funds are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community. Our goal is to never turn anyone away because of an inability to pay. We are proud to offer free swim lessons at the Y, with funding provided by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and administered by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP).

As part of the Wallingford Community Resource Alliance, we work together with other nonprofits, health & human service organizations, town departments, philanthropic organizations, and school officials in support of the community. The Alliance thinks together about community needs, advocating, promoting & supporting activities that improve the overall quality of life in Wallingford. As founders of the Wallingford Drowning Prevention Taskforce, we are tasked with reducing the incidence of drowning and near-drowning incidents in the Wallingford community through education, awareness, tracking and proactive safety measures.

The Y has listened & responded to communities’ most critical social needs since its founding, and we’re committed to implementing that same effort for all of the towns in our expanded footprint. We look forward to bringing creative solutions to residents and businesses through this proactive initiative, from North Haven to Northford.

The Y is focused on creating equitable and sustainable solutions that address both the immediate needs of the community and the systemic root causes that lead to inequities. Organizations such as the Y are built on people – without individuals at all levels having the same understanding of diversity, inclusion and equity – the organization cannot begin to effectively strengthen communities. We must be mindful of others and respectful to all.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT CAMPAIGN

In 2024, we raised $261,251 and every dollar donated has a lasting impact on the people right here in our community.

Upward Bound helps students in grades 5-12 & recent graduates develop social skills, analytical thinking and self-esteem by creating an atmosphere where youth & teens feel safe, valued and free to express themselves. Recent gradates continue with the program to have consistent support to help them meet their educational & employment goals. ARPA funding has allowed us to offer more free Teen Center programming for the youth of Wallingford.

Every summer, children from ages 4 to 15 build character, form lifelong friendships and experience the adventure of a lifetime at Camp Ulbrich. With STEM, swim lessons, all-camp competitions and more, Camp Ulbrich gives campers the opportunity to overcome new & exciting challenges. Race 4 Chase provide kids with a safe, healthy non-competitive environment to discover the sport of triathlon and empowers them to reach their full potential.

From newborns at both of our YMCA Learning Community centers to 8th graders in Enrichment & Leadership for Middle School, our child care programs provide youth with the tools and resources they need to succeed in life. We provide experiences to help entire family units cope, grow, communicate and care for each other.

The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program teaches kids water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and builds confidence in & around water. Thanks to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, we are able to offer free swim lessons to qualified youth.

With Membership for All, funds from the Community Support Campaign are distributed on a sliding scale to those with a documented need in our community.

Our Parkinson’s Water Aerobics class is specifically designed to keep individuals with Parkinson's mobile & fit. In Fit to Go, middle school youth learn about healthy living & nutrition and develop a focused & realistic workout program that they can continue. We also offer a Stage 4 Cardiac Rehab program, Healthy Hearts!

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity & well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. It offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

Our pools inspire people to achieve their goals, whether it is a competitive athlete, first time swimmer or member of our special needs community. They provide the opportunity to strengthen the body while building character and are a place where the community comes together to pursue ambitions. Our pools change the lives of everyone who just adds water.

THE Y IS OPEN TO EVERY RESIDENT.

Our diverse programs and services benefit all ages, all backgrounds, and all abilities. Our financial assistance program ensures no one is EVER turned away due to financial reasons. EVERYONE is welcome at the Y. unwavering commitment to community that inspired the establishment of our organization.

OUR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AMPLIFY OUR IMPACT.

Y has a proven history of working with strategic partners to collectively & efficiently ensure they are providing the most impact to the community. As a local leader in swim lessons, swim safety, and aquatics management, the Y is uniquely positioned to provide crucial support and expertise to other local pools.

A STRONG Y IS GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY.

Research demonstrates that community centers, like the Y, that are anchors, fostering broader and more creative interaction among a variety of people - play a vital role as “social equalizers”. In a time where loneliness and social isolation is impacting the mental health of all ages, a place like the Y is critical to the wellbeing of a community.

A NEW POOL WILL PROVIDE YEAR-ROUND AQUATICS.

The Y will make available a state of the art, multi purpose aquatics venue for all ages, ensuring families, adults and seniors have yearround, affordable access to aquatics - offering family time, lessons, water therapy and lap swim for exercise, while also promoting essential water safety skills to prevent drowning.

THE Y IS THE LARGEST PROVIDER OF YOUTH EMPLOYMENT.

An increase in programming & amenities will allow us to employ more people, including more teens - providing a foundation of leadership skills, responsibility, character-building, money management, and teamwork. Beyond a paycheck, we are committed to providing experiences that will carry them into adulthood.
