.about

me

My name is Wallace Carpenter, and I am a fourth-year student at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas, graduating in May 2025 with a bachelor‘s degree in Interior Architecture and Design.

From a young age, I have been drawn to design, fascinated by how spaces influence our daily lives. Over the years, I have developed a strong mix of creativity and technical skills, allowing me to create thoughtful and functional designs. My design philosophy is design isn’t just about aesthetics—it shapes experiences and enhances lifestyles.

As I look ahead to the next chapter, I’m eager to gain hands-on experience and apply my knowledge in a professional setting. I’m actively seeking opportunities to contribute my skills, continue learning, and collaborate with others who share my passion for design.

2018 – 2023

Each summer, eight weeks of summer camp are offered between May and July. During these two months, kids from all over the country gather at camp where they are immersed in many adventures. Everything is planned to positively affect four key areas of a camper’s life: spiritual, physical, mental, and social.

2023 – 2025 As the Treasurer of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) student chapter at the University of Arkansas, I oversee the financial aspects of our organization‘s activities and initiatives. This role involves managing budgets, tracking expenses, and ensuring the responsible allocation of funds to support our chapter‘s events, programs, and educational endeavors.

2023 – 2024 During my summer internship at Ellerslie Interiors, I was fully immersed in the design process, working closely with clients to develop concepts, create presentations, and contribute to space planning and material selections. I gained hands-on experience with AutoCAD, working on floor plans, switching plans, and cabinet layouts, which strengthened my technical skills. Regularly attending site visits and client meetings was a rewarding experience that deepened my understanding of professional design.

.concept Incorporating the concept of intersections, the aim is to create a harmonious and dynamic space where various design elements, materials, and functions intersect seamlessly. These intersections will not only serve as focal points but also as opportunities for visual intrigue and functional efficiency, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the interior environment. By strategically blending lines, forms, and textures, the intention is to craft an engaging and balanced interior that celebrates the convergence of creativity and practicality. Bringing this concept into the NEXT project will provide depth, complexity, and interest through the convergence of different ideas, elements, or paths. This concept can be a powerful visual and conceptual tool.

.concept The Outdoor Adventure Library, is designed to capture the spirit of exploration through the concept of glimpses. Inspired by the experience of navigating a winding trail, the space offers unexpected views and shifting perspectives through a network of catwalks and a structural grid. The design combines neutral tones with bold accents to create a welcoming environment that reflects the city’s growing community. This project is rooted in the belief that design can foster connection, discovery, and a shared passion for adventure.

.introduction

Last semester, I took an interior sculpture studio that offered a break from traditional design work. I designed and built two chairs and a luminaire, gaining hands-on experience with both woodworking and digital fabrication. The studio focused on creating objects for specific spaces, allowing me to explore the balance between creative form and material limitations. I worked with traditional handcraft techniques and 3D printing, which deepened my understanding of how design can blend art and function. This experience expanded my perspective on interior design and the process of creating functional, space-specific objects.

.concept The Bear Hug Chair is an armchair made entirely from walnut hardwood, showcasing a rich, natural grain and elegant curves. Its curvilinear form wraps gently around the sitter, evoking the comforting embrace of a hug. The name is a playful nod to both the chair’s design and my nickname, Bear, adding a personal and ironic touch to its identity. Designed for both comfort and aesthetic appeal, the chair seamlessly blends comfort with functionality. Its warm materiality and shape invite users to relax while celebrating the beauty of handcrafted furniture.

.location fayetteville, arkansas .year 2024

.concept The Hollowed by Time luminaire merges traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, pairing a hand-carved wooden base with a fluid 3D-printed fixture. Shaped from a solid block of wood, the base reflects the natural erosion of time, while the fixture’s form captures the fleeting nature of memory and imagination. A soft, warm light emanates from within, creating an atmosphere of quiet nostalgia. More than a functional piece, it serves as a reflection on how time shapes both material and experience, leaving behind something enduring.

.introduction

Technical drawings serve as crucial communication tools, conveying detailed information about spatial layouts, construction methods, and material specifications. These drawings provide a comprehensive visual representation of design concepts, facilitating collaboration between designers, architects, contractors, and clients.

Through my building systems class, I gained invaluable insight into the intricacies of technical drawings and their practical applications within the field. From understanding the assembly of walls to delineating the placement of furniture and fixtures, technical drawings elucidate the structural and functional aspects of interior spaces.
