LIFE IN LEVELS...

URBAN WALK-UP HOUSING URBAN INSTITUTIONS SPRING 2023

This project aims to create comfortable and adaptable spaces that cater to diverse needs, promoting accessibility for all graduate students.

In this design project, the integration of level variations has been employed to craft both double and single height programmatic experiences, cultivating an airy ambiance within the confines of relatively modest square footage per unit. The deliberate modulation of elevational planes not only amplifies spatial volume but also mitigates any potential sense of confinement typically associated with compact unit dimensions.

The design maximizes community interaction through strategically positioned shared decks and amenity spaces. These areas act as focal points, encouraging social gatherings while preserving individual privacy. The design blends indoor and outdoor elements, creating an inviting and inclusive ambiance. Residents can easily access communal spaces while enjoying personal living quarters, striking a balance between social engagement and personal solitude.

This project investigates wood light frame construction and its expressive potential through the design of a two-level watchtower. The structure itself reveals the nature of wood frame construction, including its lightweight standardized elements, modular planning, simple assembly, and formal possibilities. This project was designed in collaboration with classmate Abraham Silvers.

CHINATOWN PUBLIC RESTROOM PAVILION. SITE, SPACE, AND PROGRAM FALL 2022

This project delves into social function by designing a public restroom, typically perceived as ordinary civic infrastructure. The design integration takes place within a pavilion situated in the lively urban environment of Boston’s Chinatown, rich in culture and recreation.

While observing individuals engaged in card games within Chinatown, an intrigue was sparked to improve the spectatoraudience relationship, ensuring comfort across all age groups.

Notably, a multitude of square tables remained vacant, prompting the consideration of fostering a more inviting ambiance through the congregation of people around thoughtfully placed “social pits”. The incorporation of level changes was deemed crucial to enhance the viewing experience, facilitating ease and comfort for the audience.

Trials were conducted to establish the optimal circulation and programming for the pavilion. Trial C stood out, offering a compelling and diverse circulation pattern while effectively defining public and private spaces for the user.
