Payson City Mayor’s Message As the mayor of Payson, I would like to thank you for your interest in our great community. I love the City of Payson and the people who live here; on their behalf I would like to invite you to make Payson your home. Our small-town feel and proximity to arts and recreational activities have helped some of the largest companies in Utah - like Rocky Mountain ATV, Temkin International and Liberty Safe; realize that Payson is the best location for their corporate headquarters. The benefits of our business park have helped these companies expand in the midst of the economic recession. Liberty Safe recently expanded its workforce presence here in the city by adding a new production line while shutting down a similar line in China.
The local business park has seen new fiber optic telecommunication facilities built. It also has easy access to the freeway and offers a great location for shipping across the United States. The City of Payson and its residents have a lot to offer prospective employers. Payson is a family-friendly city dedicated to safety and quality education. Payson also enjoys a lower cost of living than elsewhere in the state of Utah and the nation, and businesses benefit from our industrious rural workforce. As mayor, I am confident that our residents will become an asset to your business as well as provide a strong consumer base. Feel free to contact me personally. I would love to meet with you and give you a guided tour of the “Many Layers” of Payson.

Payson City Located on the southern end of Utah Valley under the protection of the Wasatch Mountains, Payson is a growing community that has managed to maintain its small-town atmosphere. The community was settled by a group of Mormon pioneers in 1850. First named Peteetneet Creek after a stream in the area, the city was later renamed Payson after settler James Pace. Peteetneet was the name of a Ute Indian chief who lived in the Payson area. The Peteetneet school building, which was opened in the early 1900s, still serves as a major landmark in the city and is currently home to the Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center. Agriculture has been a major part of the city’s history, with crops including wheat, sugar beets, potatoes and onions. Payson’s annual city celebration, Golden Onion Days, was named to honor the city’s farming history and outstanding onion production. The architecture found along its historic Main Street as well as the many historical homes and buildings throughout the community are reminders of the city’s rich past. In recent years, Payson has see remarkable growth. With a population of just 12,700 in 2000, Payson is now home to nearly 20,000 residents. Major retailers and manufacturing companies are located in the city along with small and

family-owned businesses and a major hospital offering state-of-the-art medical services. Recreation opportunities are plentiful with the city’s outdoor pool, multiple parks and location near Payson Canyon, which offers multiple areas for camping as well as the beautiful Payson Lakes recreation area. Each summer, the city hosts the Payson Scottish Festival and Highland Games, a festival including bagpipe bands and other Scottish traditions, and the Salmon Supper, which attracts thousands of people to the city who enjoy a feast of Alaskan salmon flown to Payson for the event.

Payson City Events Payson Golden Onion Days
This annual celebration was first held in 1929 as an opportunity for residents and former residents to renew old friendships and make new ones. Originally known as the Onion Harvest and Homecoming, the event honored Payson’s status as an agricultural district and an outstanding producer of onions. The celebration was later renamed Payson City Golden Onion Days and that is the name that remains to this day. Golden Onion Days, which marked its 84th anniversary in 2014, is held each year on Labor Day weekend and includes events such as concerts, a carnival, a baby contest, a car show, a Dutch oven cook off, 5K and 10K races and fireworks.

Salmon Supper
For more than 60 years, crowds of people have journeyed to Payson City each August to enjoy the Payson Salmon Supper, a tradition in the city since 1954. Thousands of pounds of fresh salmon from Alaska are flown in for this event and cooked over open fruitwood fires by local firemen. The hungry participants come from throughout the area, some arriving by busload, to enjoy the meal

Payson City Events in Payson’s Memorial Park. The lines are long but move quickly, and musicians and singers perform while attendees anticipate enjoying the main attraction - the food! Sides include baked potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, roll and dessert. Originally organized by local congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Salmon Supper is now run by Payson City.
Payson Scottish Festival
The annual Payson Scottish Festival and Highland Games event celebrates Scottish traditions in all forms: dance, music, food, competition and entertainment. The first festival was organized more than 30 years ago as part of Payson’s
Golden Onion Days, but today the festival is held for two days each July. The first event, the Friday night Ceilidh (kay-lee), is held at the bandstand in Payson’s Memorial Park and features performers and dancers regaling the crowd with Scottish music, song, stories and dance. The next day, events begin with a 9 a.m. parade on Payson’s Main Street followed by the opening ceremonies, which include music by bagpipe bands. Visitors can then enjoy a variety of activities ranging from craft and food booths to additional bandstand performances, athletic and bagpipe competitions and a Highland Dance competition. The day wraps up with bagpipe bands playing and competition winners announced during the closing ceremonies.

AutoWorks Car Care celebrates 18th year of service Since 1998, AutoWorks Car Care has been the first choice for vehicle repair and maintenance in South Utah County. The owner, Shaun Martin and his friendly staff always put thecustomer first and his ASE certified technicians work hard to “Fix it Right the First Time!” While checking out every vehicle and before recommending any service, Shaun Martin asks himself one question: “What if this were my Mom’s car? What services would I recommend and which ones can wait a little while? His parents live 550 miles away in Oregon, so he can’t personally work on their cars. When Shaun started AutoWorks Car Care, he wanted his shop to be the one that would treat its customers like he would like his parents to be treated. He and two brothers worked in a repair shop in Provo together, before each branching out to start their own shop. Ryan in Shelley, Idaho, Rodney serving North Utah County in American Fork and Shaun’s to serve southern Utah County in Payson. Shaun trains his technicians to always do a bumper to bumper visual inspection on every car that comes in, no matter what the person comes in for, so they can help their customers make the best informed decisions they can. That way, people have a better idea what kind of repairs or maintenance they may need now, or down the road.
Shaun knows that people don’t have a lot of money for unexpected repairs and maintenance on their cars, so he helps his customers prioritize their car’s issues so that they can plan better to schedule future repairs and maintenance. AutoWorks Car Care has the distinction of being the only AAA Approved and Gephardt approved Auto Repair shop in South Utah County, with many bays to take care of a variety of auto problems, from alignments to engine replacements, or even just getting the oil changed. They do it all. Look for their customer reviews and monthly specials at autoworkscarcare.com

Santaquin City Mayor’s Message On behalf of the citizens of Santaquin, I welcome you to our city and I invite you to stop, visit and experience our way of life. I love Santaquin and the wonderful people that live here. We hope that you will also find our city as wonderful and friendly as we do. We take pride in our year-round, family-oriented environment. We have beautiful Santaquin Canyon as well as many well-maintained parks including our new Pole Canyon Urban Fishery to come and enjoy. As mayor, I truly believe that our strength is in our citizens who are active in all that our community has to offer. Together we are always working to make our city better. The challenge is to manage and embrace our growth while preserving our small-town
atmosphere. We are proud of our many businesses that make Santaquin a destination. People come from all over to visit Rowley’s Red Barn and The Family Tree. We have many other restaurants and businesses along Main Street that serve our community well. We have several large companies that call Santaquin home. Tischner Ford, Stringhams Hardware and Olson’s Greenhouse are a large part of our growing economy. We love our beautiful orchards here in Santaquin and support all of our wonderful fruit growers. They are such an asset to our community. The City of Santaquin has so much to offer. I invite you to come and see our unique community for yourself. I would love to meet you and welcome any questions that you have.

Local mortuary offers care, compassion The Brown Family Mortuary in Santaquin, Utah offers personalized care and compassion for those who have experienced a loss. This funeral home has been serving the community for over 40 years, and was formerly known as Holladay Hills Funeral Home and Holladay-Brown Funeral Home. In 2004, however, the Brown family purchased full ownership of the mortuary and the name was subsequently updated to Brown Family Mortuary. Previous to this, Mark Brown, the director, had been working at another funeral home in American Fork for over 20 years, and brings vast experience to the job. As the name suggests, it is truly a family business. Mark’s wife,
Jamie, a son and a daughter help run the mortuary. Mark believes that funerals are not a “one-size-fits-all” event. Instead, he and his staff try to cater to each family’s requests and to help with accommodations, such as budget concerns, with the grieving family. They also strive to help the families after the funeral has taken place, and so provide aftercare services for help with things such a social security, veteran’s benefits and life insurance. To learn more about them, you can visit their website at www. brownfamilymortuary.com. The site can also be used to view recent obituaries of those served by the funeral home.

Santaquin City Santaquin is located in Utah County about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City in a picturesque and beautiful site with a view of Utah Lake and Mount Timpanogos to the north. Originally called Summit City because of its location at the summit dividing line between Utah and Juab valleys, it was settled in late 1851 by pioneers who were helping settle Payson, a city located about six miles to the north. Abundant water, plenty of fertile land for farming, and abundant groves of trees for firewood, fence posts and cabin logs made this an ideal place for a community. Farming is still a huge part of the city. Santaquin’s annual city celebration, Orchard Days, is named in tribute to farming and for the beautiful fruit orchards that surround the city. Santaquin hosts the RMPRA Rodeo during Orchard Days, which has been named the RMPRA Rodeo of the Year for the past seven years. Santaquin has doubled its population since the year 2000 and currently has over 10,000 residents. There has been much growth in the city, but it still maintains the small-town charm desired by its residents and visitors. Photo by Santaquin City Photo Contest winner Katie Blake

Chamber President’s Message
Chambers join forces to promote local business The year 2015 has brought change to the business communities of Payson and Santaquin. As of June, the formerly separate chambers of commerce in these cities have merged into a new, stronger entity: the Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce. “We felt that combining the two chambers would create more community awareness of local business in both Payson and Santaquin,” said Colin Logue, who became president of the new chamber when the boards from the two separate organizations were combined. Keeping money local is still a central goal of the chamber. “If you can’t find it in Payson and Santaquin, then you just don’t need it,” he said. Sworn in two years ago as president of the Payson City Chamber of Commerce, Logue has sought to increase citizens’ awareness of the businesses operating in their community. One of the methods he used was creating free public movie showings at Payson’s Peteetneet Amphitheater during the summer. The movies were free, but wristbands allowing access to the movie had to be picked up in advance at a local business. For a small fee, chamber
members could sponsor the movie and be one of the wristband locations. “That way, these businesses would be able to participate more and people in the community might go to a business that they didn’t know existed,” Logue said. He also resurrected the Shop Payson Expo, an event that had not been held for 10 or more years. Colin Logue Local businesses were invited to set up booths at the expo and members of the public visited to see what local businesses had to offer. He hopes to see this event continue and grow each year. To help local businesses become more informed about current governmental issues, Logue invited prominent political figures to do question-and-answer sessions during

the two chamber installation banquets held during his term as president. The first year, Congressman Jason Chaffetz attended the banquet, and in 2015, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes attended. Logue said these visits allowed local business people to learn more about what’s going on politically and legislatively in the state and the nation. When he first joined the chamber and told other business owners he had joined the chamber board, they would ask him what the chamber did for them as a local business, Logue said. “I hope now after I’ve been president the last two years, they know exactly what the chamber can do for them as a local business,” Logue said. Logue will leave office at the end of 2015. “I’ve made great relationships that will probably last forever and wouldn’t take that back for anything,” he said. “It’s been an overall wonderful experience and I hope that the next president has as good a feeling as I have leaving the presidency.”

Payson Business of the Year Payson Market - Business of the Year 2015 From the unique, high-quality products it offers to the many ways it gives back to its customers, Payson Market is a valued part of the Payson community. The family-owned store has operated for 18 years in Payson and made customer service one of its foundational principles. “Customer service - we hang our hat on that,” said Mike Tippets, store manager of Payson Market. “Our employees are amazing. They’re not afraid to talk to people.” Many of the employees have worked at the store for years and know customers by name, he said. To set itself apart from other stores, Payson Market offers a selection of items customers can’t find anywhere else. On Saturday mornings, customers crowd the store to obtain some of the made-from-scratch donuts made by Payson Market’s bakery. Everything else the bakery produces is made from scratch as well. “We’ve got raisinfilled cookies that people drive forever for,” Tippets said. The store also makes its own tortilla chips and cinna-chips (tortilla chips with cinnamon sugar) as well as fresh salsa and Cowboy Caviar (chip dip).
In the market’s deli, customers can obtain high-quality deli meats as well as freshly made potato, macaroni and bow tie salads. Unlike many other grocery stores, Payson Market’s meat department offers Certified Angus Beef, which is slightly higher priced but well worth it. “We have a lot of things that we offer to make ourselves different,” Tippets said. The store’s most recent offering is sushi made fresh daily. Being part of the community is important to the business, and Payson Market hosts various activities for the public throughout the year. Store employees can often be found cooking items in the parking lot such as 50 cent hot dogs or $1 French toast breakfasts. Twice a year, the store offers a $5 steak meal with an 8-ounce New York steak, baked potato, salad and roll. The store doesn’t make any money at these events; they’re held to create interest in the market and give back to the community. Payson Market makes many donations to various community organizations and events including local schools and Payson’s Golden Onion Days celebration. In Octo-

Payson Business of the Year ber, the store hosts its annual Trunk-or-Treat event, which attracts thousands of people. The road next to Payson Market is blocked off and the market invites local businesses to set up a booth and pass out candy. The kids can enjoy food, face painting, balloon animals and activities such as bean bag tosses. In 2014, the event attracted about 17 businesses and some of the market’s vendors as well, and the line of trick-or-treaters stretched down the road and wrapped around the building. “It’s turned into something huge,” Tippets said. The market also hosts an annual holiday open house where customers can sample the special holiday items Payson Market offers such as peanut brittle, popcorn and cheese balls. Santa Claus makes an appearance as well. Payson Market is located at 586 N. Main in Payson. In addition to its deli, bakery and grocery services, the market also is home to a pharmacy.

Santaquin Business of the Year
Weed Man - Business of the Year 2015
Nick and Elyse Miller, owners of Weed Man Utah County, are passionate about lawn care, but they are equally passionate about community service. The business provides lawn fertilization and weed control for clients throughout all of Utah County and parts of Wasatch and Juab counties. It also provides insect control and aeration for lawns. “We have guaranteed results and we can take care of any need or concern on the lawn, and the homeowner would just have to water and mow the lawn from that point forward,” Nick Miller said. Weed Man’s administrative headquarters are in Santaquin; the business’s technical team operates out of a location in Spanish Fork. It has seven full-time employees and is the only lawn care company in Utah that is Gephardt Approved.
Outside of his business activities, Miller serves on the Santaquin City Council and as a volunteer firefighter for the city. He is also a member of the board of directors for the Payson & Santaquin Area Chamber of Commerce. “I like to be part of it all because I like what the chamber’s vision is and what they stand for,” Miller said. “They want to get people into the local businesses’ doors, and I want to be part of that.” Weed Man has sponsored many local groups and activities including youth soccer and baseball teams. It has donated to local high schools’ sports programs and is currently working with Payson High School students to assist them in broadcasting the school’s sporting events. Miller hires local high school students to help market his company, with the students going door-to-door and offering

Santaquin Business of the Year a free lawn analysis or service estimate to homeowners. The part-time jobs work well with students’ schedules as they work in the evenings, and they allow students to make money while gaining job skills. Weed Man’s main marketing season stretches between January and May, and the business will have as many as 40 students employed at that time of the year. Miller said a lot of the students he hires are from families that don’t have a lot of money and the jobs help them pay for school fees and other expenses. “I like it because you can be an example in these kids lives,” he said. “You have the opportunity to help them progress and go the right way.”

Get the smile you’ve dreamed of at Gunnerson Dental At Gunnerson Dental in Payson, the smiles on patients’ faces aren’t just about healthy teeth. They’re also about having an experience distinctly different from the traditional dental appointment - from the cookies in the waiting room to the “comfort menu” allowing patients to request items such as a neck pillow, massage cushion or blanket. “We like to think of every person that comes in the office as family,” said Dr. Cheyn Gunnerson. With a desire to raise his family in a smaller town, Dr. Gunnerson purchased his Payson dental practice in 1996. From the beginning, his vision has been to provide high-quality dental services to all ages, while getting to know patients personally and ensuring his patients and staff have fun along the way. “I think of you as someone I care about, and I want to take care of you as an individual,” he said. Gunnerson Dental is known for being different from other offices and constantly strives for a level of care that patients claim they have never heard of or seen before. Before any dental work begins, Dr. Gunnerson spends time talking with patients to get to know them and their needs. “I always want to know what’s kept you from going to the dentist, because we want to address those concerns too,” he said. Gunnerson Dental offers a wide variety of services including: • General and Cosmetic Dentistry work including crowns manufactured in their office, meaning patients are examined and the final crown put in place during one appointment. • Six-month Cfast braces for adults to straighten teeth. • Oral sedation for those who are frightened and want to be anywhere else but at the dentist’s office. • Implants and wisdom teeth extraction. • Emergencies: An office employee takes a cell phone home every night so the dentist can be reached in case of emergency. • Children’s dental services: Dr. Gunnerson said he loves having kids come to the office and does his best to make them comfortable. Many parents report that their children
get excited when told they have a dentist appointment. At Gunnerson Dental, oral health is seen as an investment, not a cost. Dr. Gunnerson is one of only a few dental offices that still offer payment plans, and the office staff takes great care to explain payment options to patients and answer any questions. Also available is a dental savings plan allowing patients to invest a certain amount per year and receive two cleanings, any exams they might need and a discount on services. Patients can enjoy participating in many contests and giveaways such as the Cavity Free Club; its members are entered into drawings for things like movie tickets. In other drawings, patients win prizes like bicycles and big screen televisions. Coming in during your birthday week? The staff will sing and provide balloons and cupcakes. Gunnerson Dental gives back to the community through its annual Dentistry From the Heart event. One day a year, the office provides free dental care to as many people as possible. Other dentists and hygienists from the community are invited to participate. Another event Gunnerson Dental hosts is their annual Smile Makeover Contest. Together with Dr. Cameron Egbert of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Spanish Fork, Serve Daily and 56 West Salon and Spa, the winner will receive up $30,000 towards a new smile and some pampering for a photo shoot when their treatment is complete. Gunnerson Dental is currently accepting nominations for their Smile Makeover Contest in November and December 2015 and will be announcing the winner after the 2016 New Year! Gunnerson Dental also supports many local community organizations and events. For that smile you’ve always dreamed of, call Gunnerson Dental today. To the team at Gunnerson Dental, it’s about more than just teeth!

Payson High School PHS teacher equipping students with English skills In Eloise Bridges’ Business English and College Writing courses at Payson High School, students are constantly pushed to work hard and may end up redoing papers multiple times before they’re accepted. “When the kids start writing, I insist that they use proper grammar, and I give it back and give it back and give it back until they use it correctly,” Bridges said. The emphasis on excellence has resounded with students, however, as every year Bridges’ classes have more students trying to enroll than she has space to fill. “Eloise is one of the most dedicated, student-friendly teachers I have ever worked with. She is constantly adapt-
ing her curriculum to individual student needs to make them successful,” said PHS Principal Ben Ford. “She is able to get her students to perform at higher levels than they ever thought they could. Every student that has ever gone through both years of her program is ready to excel at college.” The students are ready to excel in their lives and careers as well. In Business English, students start off with basics like capitalization and go on to learn practical skills such as how to write letters and memos. The students practice job interview skills and put together a resume, which must be turned in printed on resume-quality paper. “Multiple times kids have told me, ‘I
34 • Payson~Santaquin Connection • www.paysonsantaquinarea.com
learned more in the first week of this class than all of my English classes put together,’” Bridges said. Her College Writing course is a concurrent enrollment class taught through Utah Valley University, allowing students to earn college credit. She gives her students plenty of work to prepare them for the workload of college, but she isn’t always the one teaching the class. Bridges said students learn through teaching concepts, so often she will have her students read the material and then teach it to their classmates. “For the last few years, I’ve felt that ‘teacher’ is the wrong word for what I do because I feel the kids are teaching themselves. I’m more of a facilitator, a guide,” Bridges said. “I cannot teach somebody; they have to learn.” Students even grade their own essays, but they must provide supporting documentation proving they have achieved the grade they gave themselves. “I think why my classes are so full is because the parents and my previous students say, ‘You’ve got to do this,’” she said. “I’ve had so many students go away and come back and say, ‘This is the most valuable program I’ve been in.’” Bridges has been teaching at Payson High School for 30 years and expects to retire within the next year or two.
Salem Hills High School
Salem Hills students helping wishes come true Since Salem Hills High School opened in 2008, the school’s students have banded together once a year to help grant the wish of a child suffering from serious health problems. In conjunction with the Make-A-Wish program, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses through the help of volunteers and donors, the SHHS student council annually oversees Make-A-Wish Week at the school. The week is filled with activities and assemblies, which raise money to grant the wish of a child the student council has selected from the local community. The student council visits with the child to learn about his or her interests, then customizes the week’s activities around those interests so the student body can get to know the child as well. For example, one boy loved Legos, so the school held a massive Lego-building contest. “We just really tried to make that week all about that kid,” said Cheri Campbell, an ASL teacher who served as student council advisor at SHHS for seven years. She is now dean of students at Mt. Nebo Junior High School. Make-A-Wish Week begins with an assembly where
the students are introduced to the child. One child was a big Brigham Young University football fan, so Cosmo was invited to attend the assembly. “We just tried to make them feel like they were the most important person in the world,” Campbell said. Each year as a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish, the school also hosts the Great Skyhawk Gorge, an event where the public is invited to pay $5 per person or $20 per family and enjoy dozens of tasting tables set up in the school. Campbell said the goal has been to have 100 or more tables featuring bite-sized samples. Often visitors donate more to the cause than the entrance fee. The 2015 Skyhawk Gorge will be held on Monday, Nov. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. Campbell said Make-A-Wish Week brings the student body together and gives students a new perspective as they serve others. “There are kids that have never served anyone and it changes their lives,” she said.

Local Arts
Payson Civic Chorale: Singing for nearly 35 years For nearly 35 years, the Payson Civic Chorale has been performing beautiful choral music for members of the Payson community and beyond. Founded in February of 1981, the chorale grew out of traditional performances of Handel’s Messiah that were being presented every other year in Payson. David C. Dahlquist moved to Payson in 1975 when he was hired as Payson High School’s new choir director and became acquainted with the person organizing the Messiah. She eventually asked him to take over and conduct the performances. A few years later, a group of community members with musical backgrounds began discussing the potential of meeting more often to perform. As a result, Dahlquist organized the Payson Civic Chorale and became its director, a position he still holds today. “The civic chorale was organized for the sole purpose of doing a little more singing than every other year in the Messiah,” he said. Auditions are held for the chorale each fall and membership fluctuates between about 50 and 80 people. Membership is open to anyone 18 years old (who is out of high school) or older, with most members coming from the southern Utah County area. Rehearsals are held in the choir room at Payson High School. “We have tried over the years to provide a little higher caliber of music for them to hone their musicians skills beyond something they might get if they were just involved in, say, a church choir,” Dahlquist said. “The chorale also exists to help raise the musical standards of the community and challenge listeners’ ears with something other than the all-too familiar.” The chorale performs multiple times per year, including annual Christmas and spring concerts in Payson. It often
performs at Temple Square in Salt Lake City during the Christmas season and has traveled multiple times to southern Utah to perform in the St. George Tabernacle as well. The choir continues to host a Messiah Sing-In, but now presents it annually, with members of the public invited to sing with the chorus. Chorale members have also enjoyed performance tours to locations as far away as Hawaii and Mexico City. The Payson Civic Chorale has performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and at the World’s Fair in New Orleans. It also performs joint concerts with other Utah choirs. During the 2015 holiday season, the Payson Civic Chorale will perform in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The chorale’s Messiah Sing-Alone will be held Sunday, Nov. 29, and its “Christmas with the Chorale” concert will be held Sunday, Dec. 20. Gladstan Golf Course
For beautiful views, visit Payson’s Gladstan Golf Course Perched on the foothills of the mountains surrounding Payson City, the Gladstan Golf Course offers views unlike any other. The beauty of Utah Valley is laid out for golfers to enjoy, from Utah Lake to Mt. Timpanogos and Point of the Mountain. On clear days, golf course visitors can see as far as Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. “The setting you won’t find anywhere, the views of both the mountains and valleys,” said Tracy Zobell, director of golf for the Gladstan Golf Course. The golf course was originally located in Payson on the west side of I-15 on property owned by Gladys and Stanley Wilson and takes its name from the combination of the names Gladys and Stanley. The course was later moved to its current location in the southeast corner of Payson, where it opened in 1988. “It’s a fun and challenging golf course. It attracts a bunch of different players, all skill levels,” Zobell said. Because it’s located in the foothills, there are many elevation changes as golfers play the course, with some tee shots dropping the ball as much as 200 feet. Each individual hole has a distinctly different feel and challenge, making it an attractive
option over other courses where golfers may feel they are playing the same hole over and over again. “A lot of our weekend play is from outside Utah County,” Zobell said. “Golfers will travel for a good golf course.” A few years ago, course staff kept track of visitors’ zip codes to monitor where their players were coming from. In a year, the course hosted golfers from all counties in Utah, 43 different states and 13 different countries. For local golfers, there are opportunities for friendly competition and socialization with other players. Gladstan Golf Course has large and active men’s and women’s golf associations that offer weekly tournaments.

Health Care
Mountain View Hospital opens new spine academy The prospect of surgery on the spine or joints can be intimidating and frightening to patients. However, knowing what to expect and how to correctly manage the recovery process makes a positive outcome much more likely. With this in mind, Mountain View Hospital in Payson officially opened its new Spine and Joint Academy on Nov. 1 in the Mountain View Medical Plaza located just west of the hospital. This program will be a resource for patients through the entire surgical process, from diagnosis and selecting treatment to preparing for surgery, pain management and healing. JoAnn Winn, an RN and director of the new academy, said the program will host classes for patients teaching them how to prepare for their surgery, answering questions about the procedures and explaining how to best manage their recovery. “One of the key things that’s important - we strongly believe that the patient needs to be in the driver’s seat, that they have control of what’s going on,” Winn said, “and we’ll give them as much or as little help as they need with that.” Knowledge can be a great help to patients even regarding things as simple as how to organize the home before surgery so a patient can avoid bending over while they heal. Patients can contact Winn and she will arrange for them
to attend a class, or she may contact patients that are referred by doctors. She plans to meet spinal surgery patients as they arrive at the hospital, stay with them until the surgery begins and visit with them afterward to answer questions. Overall, she will be an advocate for them through the entire process. The academy is now focusing on spinal surgery patients and will begin assisting joint surgery patients as well in early 2016. The MVH academy has been patterned after a similar program at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem. Like Mountain View, Timpanogos Regional is a MountainStar Healthcare hospital. “They have seen great improvement in the outcomes of their cases and the satisfaction of the patients who go through the academy,” Black said. “This will bring much improved quality of life to those that we serve and help them to feel comfortable throughout the process.”

Tiny Homes Ready to Flood Utah County Market! Over 40% of the population in Utah County cannot afford to purchase a home because of ever increasing costs to buy or build a home. Even the lowest priced homes in the county (typically 40-60 years old and in need of repair) are still too expensive. There simply aren’t enough homes in the market for all the people that would like to own a home.
START TINY
Life Starter Homes Has the Answer! Life Starter Homes is a locally owned company that is an up and coming builder of Tiny and Small Homes in Utah County. The trend of Tiny Homes is sweeping the nation and Utah County is ready to explode with this affordable housing phenomenon. Life Starter Homes will work with you to custom build the exact home you are looking for and will also work hard on finding the perfect property to fit within your budget. Life Starter Homes can start you out with a single unit Tiny Home that is 8 ½ feet wide, 13 feet tall, and 18 feet long. Each unit comes with a loft bedroom, a full bathroom, kitchen, and dining area. All homes are made with interchangeable parts, making the homes easily expandable as the need arises.
EASILY EXPANDABLE
These homes are also built so that they can be self-sustaining or “off the grid.” They can be equipped with solar panels on the roof to generate electricity and can have a roof system to collect and purify rainwater. Finally, the price range makes these homes incredibly affordable. A basic Tiny Home starts at $19,000 and goes up from there depending on the size of home and the customized options you desire. The pricing of these homes allows you to own your own home, free and clear, in 5-10 years!
