Lehi Family Week is a wonderful thing to celebrate. It gives us a chance to reflect on the blessings of life and the blessings of those around us. No matter where we live or how far from home we travel, we always know that someone is waiting and praying for us. It really doesn’t matter if you have a large family, a small family, or don’t have a blood relative to be found. Someone somewhere does care for you. You can count on that! It may be family, a neighbor, a friend, or someone across town. Each of us should take the time to share that kind of relationship with someone in our community. Both friends and family can bring peace of mind and feelings of love. I would hope that every citizen

6

in our community and in surrounding communities will take the opportunity to attend the Lehi Family Week activities. They provide a chance to strengthen the values we have and the blessing in our lives. Let’s not forget that family is about a relationship, not a blood line. So take a neighbor and enjoy the wholesome activities that will be going on all week. Take a look at the schedule; you’re sure to find plenty to do and enjoy. Memories are made up of the things we do and who we do them with, not the things we forgot to do or wish we had done. Come to all the events and tell them you are a guest of the mayor. Let’s love more, forgive more, do more, appreciate what we have, stop worrying about

what we want, and be grateful that we have a community who cares about each other and our families. Gratefully your Mayor, Bert Wilson

Lehi Family Week is in it’s 14th year! We have been privileged to hear from some of the best experts, entertainers and darn good parents who have shared their heart and souls with us! I have learned that parenting is the greatest job in the world and very rewarding! Sure there are good days and not so good days - but knowing that parents are dedicated to one another and their kids makes the journey that much more enjoyable! Thanks to the wonderful businesses here in Lehi and American Fork who give to this week long event every year! We are so grateful for your trust and value your donations. Please patronize these businesses and show your support! I want to thank my committee - Kathy Fitzgarrold, Susan Brown, Erin Wells, Johnny Barnes and Josh Walker for serving as trusted advisors and friends always focused on improving Lehi Family Week each year. We hope you will plan to participate in many of the activities this month and make Lehi Family Week a Thanksgiving tradition in your family!

The Brockbank, Barnes and Strong families have been chosen as Lehi Family Week’s 2014 Outstanding Families. Each year Lehi Family Week spotlights families who have been nominated by people in the community who believe these families to be extraordinary and worthy of special recognition. The nominations are considered by the Lehi Family Week committee and three families are chosen to be recognized. This year’s Outstanding Families will be honored at Lehi Family Week’s kick-off event on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Willowcreek Middle School Auditorium, 2275 W. 300 North, Lehi. Admission is free; seating is first come, first served. To nominate a family to be recognized during the 2015 Lehi Family Week, visit www.lehi-ut.gov/discover/family-week for a nomination form.

STEVE & BROOKE BROCKBANK Both born and raised in Utah, Steve and Brooke Brockbank moved to California where Steve attended optometry school, then returned to Herriman, Utah, where they started their family and their own optometry business. The business did well, but when the economy slowed down, they felt they needed to make a fresh start. They decided to take a huge risk, sell their home and business and move first to Moscow, Idaho, and then to the rolling hills of Pullman, Washington. Once again, they worked hard and built their family-run optometrist business from the ground up. While Steve saw patients, Brooke worked the front desk and kept the books, usually with a child or two by their side. As their business grew, their family did as well, and they now have six children ranging in age from 17 to 5. Steve and Brooke’s philosophy in raising their family has been to stick together, play together, work together and “kwitchurbellyakin’.” They wanted to raise their children with deep moral values and a good work ethic,

10

and they decided that raising their family on a farm would be a good start. In Washington, they bought a farm where they kept chickens, sheep, horses and a pig. The children took to it immediately, especially the younger ones as they took care of the chickens. While there, they felt like their children needed to be tied to their roots, their heritage and the principles of freedom that their country was built upon, so they came up with the idea of doing a Freedom Camp. They invited their extended family to their home, and for four days, they hosted more than 50 people who enjoyed songs, devotionals, games and family history activities together. The children learned about hard work as they performed tasks around the farm. On the last day, a family flag was made with the family motto. Since their first Freedom Camp, the Brockbanks have gone on to hold three more camps. Brooke and Steve eventually felt that they needed to move back to Utah and after selling their home, business and farm, they moved their family to Lehi.

They again started an optometry business, this one specializing in high-end eyeglasses. To maintain a bit of their farm life, they created a chicken coop in their backyard. Brooke loves to be involved with her neighbors and friends. A gifted singer and lover of theater, she organized a Broadway-themed community show for kids of all ages in her neighborhood, accepting anyone who wanted to participate. They practiced for weeks, singing and dancing, until finally they presented a free performance at a local school with everyone in costume. The Brockbanks have fun together but they also like to do things outside of the home in the community. They have volunteered their time and talents at events such as the Scouting 100th Anniversary Celebration performance at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City and the “Savior of the World” presentation at Temple Square. Steve has served as a Scout leader, a coach for city league basketball and as Young Men’s leader in his LDS ward. Brooke has volunteered her time at their children’s charter school, has homeschooled a few of their children and is always looking

They work together, play together and extend themselves in service to others.

MARLIN & DONNA BARNES Marlin and Donna Barnes of Lehi have spent decades working to improve the education of Lehi students and serve their community. They are lifelong Lehi residents who graduated from Lehi High School and later graduated from Brigham Young University with master’s degrees. Marlin spent his career as a fifth-grade teacher, working at the Lehi Elementary for 30 years. He touched the lives of thousands of students during his time there. Students remember him for his “shambattle” tournaments, square dancing and unique songs he would teach them as he accompanied them on his guitar. He was one of the first teachers to take students to Clear Creek Camp, a facility owned by Alpine School District, giving students the opportunity to learn about nature, science and the infamous “hermit.” Donna also spent her professional career as an educator in Murray and Alpine school districts, spending more than 30 years working as a school

12

teacher and guidance counselor. She was elected to the Alpine School District Board of Education and held a position on that board for eight years, focusing on meeting the needs of teachers and students in the Lehi area. She has a deep passion for education and believes that every student should have the opportunity to experience success in school. She currently serves as a member of the Lehi City Planning Commission and was on the board of directors for Intermountain Healthcare’s Urban South Region for more than 10 years. In 1994, the Barneses opened Scrooge and Marley’s, a gift and furniture store that they operated for nearly 20 years. For many years, Marlin was active in local community sports, playing fast-pitch softball until he was about 65 years old. He has also been a guitar player for “The Sundowners”, a four-member country western band that has performed at many Lehi events over the years. His daughter Becky said

she didn’t think Marlin had missed a Lehi Round-Up Rodeo since he was old enough to walk. “That is a yearly event that is very near and dear to his heart,” she said. Marlin and Donna raised five children in Lehi: Bob, Becky, Gin, Rusty and Randy. Two of their children work at Lehi High School. Bob is a guidance counselor and basketball coach, and Becky Barnes White is a business and marketing teacher who started and continues to run the annual Mascot Bowl that takes place every fall to raise money for less fortunate Lehi children. The Barneses are active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have 17 grandchildren. They recently made a large donation of historically significant newspapers and heritage items to the Lehi City Historical Archives. They have spent their entire lives serving the community of Lehi, and you will often find them in the bleachers cheering on their grandchildren as they carry on the legacy of being a Lehi Pioneer. JIM & LAVEE STRONG Jim and LaVee Hadfield Strong have spent their more than 50 years of marriage living in Lehi, raising five children and serving in their community in many different capacities. LaVee was born and raised in Lehi and graduated from Lehi High School, then attended Brigham Young University where she met her husband Jim. Born and raised in South Dakota, Jim served for one year in the South Dakota National Guard and two years in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps before attending BYU. The couple were married in 1959 and moved to Lehi, where they’ve lived ever since. Jim spent his career working for Hercules Inc., retiring after 31 years. LaVee was an employee at Alpine School District for 23 years, working at several schools as a school secretary and a school registrar. As an expert in rocks and minerals, Jim has served as a volunteer and staff member at the Hutchings Museum of Natural and Cultural History for 21 years. He loves teaching people about geology and the his-

tory of the Lehi area, particularly the many elementary school students who tour the museum. He has also been involved in writing up historical information about Lehi and the city’s famous past residents for the museum. In the past, he has served as a member of the board of directors of the Lehi Hospital and the Hutchings Museum; he currently serves on the museum’s collection committee. Jim has been involved in the Boy Scouts of America organization for nearly 50 years and has earned the Silver Beaver, Second Miler and Hutchings Museum Scouting awards. He has also held many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a bishop, a member of a stake presidency and a branch president at the Missionary Training Center. Their family is close-knit, with LaVee planning one large family activity each month. These activities have included going to Lagoon and Lehi Round-Up events as well as holding yard sales and parties.

World Class Auto - Family is key to success

Before recommending any service, Rod Martin asks himself one question: “Would I recommend this to one of my family members?” His parents live 550 miles away in Oregon, so he can’t personally work on their cars. When Rod and his wife, Kimberly, started World Class Auto Repair almost 10 years ago, they wanted their shop to be the one that would treat its customers like he would like his parents to be treated. Rod knows that a lot of people don’t have extra money for unexpected repairs and maintenance on their cars, so he helps his customers prioritize their car’s issues so that they can plan better to schedule future repairs and maintenance. He trains his technicians to always do a bumper to bumper visual inspection on every car that comes in, no matter what the person comes in for, so they can help their customers make the best informed decisions they can. They have the distinction of being the area’s only AAA approved auto repair shop, with 11 bays to take care of a variety of auto problems, from alignments

14

to engine replacements, or even just to get the oil changed. Above all, Rod and Kimberly live in American Fork and hope that their love for the area shows in their work. Rod gives back to the community as a member of the local Rotary Club and as a sponsor Rod Martin of the American Fork High School football team. For the last five years, the Strong family has participated in a walk sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Utah-Southern Idaho Chapter. The walk helps raise funds for MS research. LaVee has donated historical items such as yearbooks, music books and family history books to the Lehi City Historical Archives. She and Jim served as volunteers during the 2002 Winter Olympics and she has donated items such as shirts and coats that they were given as Olympic volunteers to the archives as well. LaVee has helped preserve her own family’s history through making scrapbooks for each of her children and grandchildren. The Strongs have five children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

HUTCH’S HOME FURNISHINGS Since its beginning 67 years ago, Hutch’s Home Furnishings has emphasized serving its customers and the Lehi community. Started in 1946 by Harold and Marie Hutchings, the business was originally known as the Lone Eagle Trading Post and carried a variety of items including Native American blankets, jewelry and sporting goods. “They did a little bit of everything there including Harold being a gunsmith,” said Janys Hutchings, who currently owns the business with her husband Bret. Eventually they expanded into the appliance market, and as a result, Hutch’s Home Furnishings is now the oldest

dealer for Whirlpool appliances in the Intermountain West. Originally located in the area of 150 W. Main in Lehi, the business was moved to its current location at 50 E. Main in 1960. By then, the store’s offerings had shifted to mainly appliances, sporting goods, paint and hardware, and the name had changed to Hutch’s Pro Hardware. When Harold and Marie’s son Bret Hutchings returned home from an LDS mission in 1980, he took over management of the store. When he married Janys, they changed the name to Hutch’s TV & Appliance and the business concentrated on appliances, electronics and sport-

ing goods. In 2005, the growing business saw many changes as the store’s building was torn down and a larger store was rebuilt in the same location. Furniture and mattresses were added to the offerings that year, and the name changed to the one Lehi residents are now familiar with: Hutch’s Home Furnishings. Today, the store carries a wide variety of furniture and appliances including the Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Fisher & Paykel, LG, Serta and Tempur-pedic brands. Any room in the house can be furnished at Hutch’s, with the business offering living room, dining room sets, bedroom furniture and mattresses. Hutch’s Home Furnishings has frequently won the Daily Herald’s Best of Utah Valley Readers’ Choice Award in categories such as the best place to buy appliances, furniture, mattresses and receive good customer service. For the last five years in a row, Hutch’s has won the award for best appliance service and repair. Recently they were named “The Brand Source 2014 Dealer of the Year” by their appliance and furniture trade association. While running their business, the Hutchings have been serving their community. Bret recently retired after 31 years as a fireman for the Lehi City Fire Department; he also served as a major in the Utah Army National Guard. When not working at the store, Janys teaches AP Human Geography at Mountain Ridge Junior High School in Highland. She served on the committee for the Lehi

Round-Up Parade for many years and is currently chairwoman of the Lehi Planning Commission. She was also instrumental in beginning Lehi’s Main Street Halloween Parade through which local businesses hand out candy and prizes to young trick-or-treaters each year. Bret and Janys have raised their four children - Erika, Travis, Trent, and Leslie - in the store. All of the children have learned the ins and outs of the business from sweeping floors to selling furniture and appliances. Bret and Janys feel fortunate to be able to work with family members in their business. Offering the best customer service possible continues to be their goal. “The American business concept was built on the family-run stores,” Janys said. “There are a lot of people that come in and they say, “We like the atmosphere here and we like doing business with a local company.”

Lehi is a great place to live, and what makes it even better is its many volunteers! Yes, we see you out and about volunteering at the Literacy Center, schools, businesses and throughout the neighborhoods of Lehi. Whether it’s putting up flags or donating food to a local shelter, Lehi citizens are some of the best giving citizens we know of. As a Lehi Family Week committee, we meet once a month and plan almost nine months before the event even takes place. You will meet amazing people who give willingly of their time and energy to bring quality experiences to local families, and we have a lot of fun doing it. If you are interested in joining the Lehi Family Week committee, contact Erin Wells (ewells@lehi-ut.gov). Be a part of something meaningful and rewarding!

Stonehaven Dental has been operating in Lehi since 2006 and is excited to be a part of Lehi Family Week. Known for offering all types of dental services in the convenience of one locations, Stonehaven is a perfect fit for families. Free exams and X-rays are offered for all new patients and services range from pediatric dentistry to orthodontics, wisdom teeth extraction, cosmetic dentistry and crowns. “We can take care of your family of five all in one visit,” said Mary Hegerman, Stonehaven marketing manager. Stonehaven Dental is certified in IV sedation for patients who have a fear of dentists. Smiles which allows people to go in and get a free cleaning and other services. The business provides scholarships each year for local high school students and recently completed its Halloween candy buy-back program, gathering more than 200 pounds of candy that will be donated to Operation Gratitude and shipped to soldiers

overseas for Christmas. Stonehaven Dental dentists also travel each year to countries such as Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic to provide dental services for people in those areas of the world. To schedule your appointment with Stonehaven Dental and experience its family-friendly services, call (801) 855-0858.

For a fun and unique family activity, visit Lehi’s John Hutchings Museum of Natural and Cultural History. In 1956, Hutchings and his wife Eunice donated their vast collection of rocks, minerals, fossils, shells, Wild West guns and other artifacts and memorabilia to the nonprofit museum corporation to be held in trust for the people of Lehi. The collection has grown over the years as others have donated, and the museum now has 13 main display rooms full of items ranging from birds and eggs to dinosaur fossils, Native American and Wild West artifacts and historical items from the early settlers of Lehi. The museum is a hands-on teaching museum and has many interactive, touch and feel exhib-

its. “We have the very best rock and mineral display in Utah,” said Cindy Lee Muir, who is over special events and advertising for the museum. The museum’s Native American room has artifacts from 25 different native cultures spanning from 100 years ago to 10,000 years ago. Other rooms include the Butterfly Hall, with its collection of butterflies, moths and insects; the Sea Life Hall, with a display of South Sea artifacts including shells, corals, sea urchins and turtles; and the Lehi Sugar Factory Room, which educates visitors about the Utah Sugar Company and its sugar-making operation which operated in Lehi in the early 1900s. The museum is located in the historic Veterans Memorial Build-

Proactive vs. reactive healthcare We have heard a lot about ‘health-care’ this past year or so. Many people have seen their costs go up while their benefits have decreased. As a result, I am having more conversations about how we can have better health so as to avoid these rising costs. I believe, the answer lies in understanding the difference between ‘Proactive Healthcare’ versus ‘Reactive Healthcare’. Our current system is not based on health at all...It is based on disease where we wait until we have a symptom or a disease prior to entering the healthcare system. However there is one major problem…by the time we get to our healthcare practitioner, we are already sick! Therefore we spend all of our time working to get out of our health-hole and on our way again. So in reality, we have a ‘disease-care’ system, not a ‘health-care’ system. And as long as we are chasing symptoms and disease, the costs will always increase. So what would a true ‘Health-Care’ system look like? What would happen if we changed from a reactive to a proactive system? How would that affect our overall health costs? A true ‘Health-Care’ system would be where each individual starts by taking responsibility for their own heath. They would realize that the more actions they take to be healthy, the less chance they would have in becoming sick. This becomes important because the body was designed to be healthy as long aswe take care of it. It was also designed to heal itself. Yes, some people have significant health challenges regardless of what they do. However for

most of us, our bodies will respond positively as we proactively increase our ‘health habits’. These positive and proactive actions will help to maintain our current good health, and help prevent us from entering the disease-care system. When this happens the overall costs to keep our health would dramatically decrease because there would be less doctor visits, less tests and less breakdown of the body. In reality, there are just 5 basic Health Habits that we can change to be healthy! They are: •Eat a balanced diet: That which we eat becomes the building blocks and fuel for our body. The better the fuel and building blocks, the better we function. •Regular Exercise: Exercise relieves stress, increases function and provides energy. •Proper Rest: Our bodies repair and regenerate while we sleep. •Positive Thoughts: How we think is how we experience life. The better our thoughts, the better our life. •Optimal Nerve Function: A healthy nervous system is the basis for a healthy life. This is because our nerve system controls every aspect of our body. If there is nerve dysfunction, then our body will not function properly. My challenge to each of us as we look to a new year is to determine to become proactive in our health by taking personal responsibility to improve our healthy habits. Lehi Area Chamber teams up with ‘Play Unplugged’ for 2015 As a Chamber of Commerce we have a deep passion for helping businesses find success and consider it a civic duty to promote shopping local whenever we can. As President of the Chamber, I am always looking for new and innovative programs that will advance these ideals. One of the best ways that I can add value to local business owners is by providing a reason for residents to visit and shop at local businesses. I am confident that we have found a new program that will accomplish this goal. Recently, our board unanimously voted to introduce the “Play Unplugged” program to Lehi, and I will be serving on the Play Unplugged committee in order to help get ready for the launch next summer. If you haven’t heard, the Play Unplugged program “is all about encouraging kids to put down their electronics and get out and play. This is done by creating a symbiotic relationship between kids, parents and the local community. This relationship creates an incentive for all to participate as one motivates the

other.” (www.weplayunplugged.com) The “Play Unplugged Lehi” program will provide larger corporations an opportunity to support a community program that encourages kids to live healthy and be active during the summer. The program also provides an amazing marketing vehicle for retail and service businesses by driving foot traffic right through the front door (kids with parents in-tow).

We are excited to team up with Lehi City and bring this program to Lehi. It will be an amazing experience to help the local business community, the school district, and the city come together and provide an amazing experience for families in our area. Imagine kids dragging their parents into local businesses so they can get their ‘brag badge’ and earn points to win prizes at the end of the year party. The Spanish Fork/Salem Area Chamber was the first chamber in Utah County try out the Play Unplugged program earlier this year and proved how amazing the Play Unplugged program can be for the entire community. Thousands of local kids participated which meant thousands of parents visited local businesses throughout the summer months. Local foot traffic skyrocketed and business owners couldn’t

have been more pleased with this program. They are all excited to participate again with Play Unplugged 2015. I am excited for Lehi business owners and residents to experience these same benefits.

Businesses that want to get involved with “Play Unplugged Lehi” should contact me, Mark Welcker @801-836-0836 or send an e-mail to Sasha Stanley at officeadmin@ lehiareachamber.org. Looking forward to an Amazing 2015!
