OUR LEGACY LIVES ON 2021-22 Waldron Mercy Legacy Students

OPENING REMARKS From the Principal

Dear Waldron Community,

Catherine McAuley once said “A community in which this universal charity reigns, is capable of surmounting all difficulties.”

Though the past few years have had their fair share of struggles, we saw beauty in each and every day with our students, and we are so proud of the ways that they persevered and succeeded despite the challenges that they faced. For example, after a long hiatus of “normal” sports seasons, our Varsity Soccer team defeated Gwynedd Mercy to win the championship in 2021 and our 2022 team recently placed 2nd in the CAL league!

Our 2021/2022 Mercy Theme (Celebrating Diversity, United in Mercy) spoke to the idea that, though we are different from each other in many ways, we are all unified by our Mercy family and together we are stronger! It is these differences that set our students up for success later in life: providing daily opportunities to work, play and learn with people who look, speak and think differently than you allows you to view the world with a more open and compassionate mind.

As we approach our 100th anniversary, Waldron Mercy Academy continues to change, grow and adapt every single year, while one truth remains constant: We create generations of merciful, peaceful change makers who are invested in their education and inspired to succeed in whatever they do.

Please join us in praying for the WMA Class of 2022 as they have now embarked on their new adventures in a variety of notable high schools, and please continue to keep the entire Waldron community in your prayers as we continue another incredible school year. We are proud to incorporate our 2022/2023 Mercy Theme: Living in Mercy; Leading with Peace into our daily lives here at Waldron, and we hope that our peaceful aspirations will also inspire the community around us.

We are endlessly grateful for all of your support and guidance, and we are excited to commemorate our 100th anniversary with Waldron alumni and families from near and far — stay tuned for more exciting details!

ATHLETICS ACHIEVEMENTS SOCCER C.A.L.

CHAMPIONS!

The varsity Soccer team had a fantastic 2021 season, which was capped off with a thrilling victory in the Championship Game at Gwynedd Mercy Academy. The team had some highs and lows throughout the season, but played fantastic soccer in the playoffs. Waldron beat rival Norwood Fontbonne Academy on penalty kicks to advance to the championship against Gwynedd.

The Championship game versus Gwynedd Mercy was something to be remembered. The team played their hearts out in front of their loyal fans and prevailed 2 - 1 in a game that came down to the final seconds. A thrilling scene followed, with our students running onto the field to celebrate the championship with their peers.

BASKETBALL JV C.A.L. CHAMPIONS!

The JV boys CAL basketball team had a stellar season. They went undefeated and won the Catholic Academy League Championship. Not only were these boys talented as a team, they also showed a lot of sportsmanship and character throughout the season. Waldron is proud of their accomplishments on and off the floor.

TRACK PENN RELAYS

WMA Track & Field came back full force at the Penn Relays after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic. Our athletes participated in the 4x100 event, with teams of Senior Boys, Junior Boys and Junior Girls all making us incredibly proud with their effort and determination.

“Per usual, Franklin Field was drenched in rain, but that did not dampen any enthusiasm or determination from our track runners especially since for many, this was their first time ever attending. Our novice girls in particular gave a strong performance finishing just near the top 10 teams throughout the CYO region!”

STARS & STRIPES THEATRE PRESENTS HAWAIIAN BEACH PARTY

Our Stars and Stripes theater presented Hawaiian Beach Party this past spring with standout performances by our 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders! The sunny “staycation” was filled with fun musical numbers and comedic moments, and guests loved snapping photos with Tiki Kahuna after the show.

THE SPRING MUSICAL THEATRE PRESENTS THEMUSICMAN,JR.

The spring musical returned this year with The Music Man, JR. We were thrilled to see our 5th through 8th graders on the WMA stage for this fantastic performance. With a combined effort between staff and volunteers, we were able to transform the Dixon gymnasium into River City, Iowa. Director Michael Borton said: “Among the stellar cast, we saw amazing performances from our eighth grade students: Alex Cooper, Olivia Wolanin, Mimi O’Malley and many more. Their energy and enthusiasm brought the stage to life through song and dance and we are overjoyed to be back!”

RECESS FOOTBALL

As many current parents may know, the highlight of recess for a number of our 2nd and 3rd graders during the past school year was playing touch football with Mr. Lane. His title may be Director of Security, but he also spent time each day as coach and referee for these students, and it was a blast to watch them have fun as their skills improved!

These recess sessions culminated in late May with a combined grade recess as the 2nd and 3rd graders faced off on the football “field” and a crowd of peers participated as cheerleaders and mascots to watch them play. The thrilling game ended in a tie, featuring certificates for all, a trophy with shared custody between classrooms, and the biggest smiles you can imagine as they headed back inside. A big thank you to Bill Lane for helping create these magical memories for our WMA students!

Wellness Week HAPPY & HEALTHY AT WMA

This spring, we held our first annual Waldron Mercy Academy Wellness Week organized by a committee of faculty and staff and made possible with plenty of dedication and hard work. Our Wellness Week was inspired by a desire to bring attention to the physical and mental health and well-being of our students and staff. Our goal was to “hit pause” and invite dialogue and introspection around what feels challenging right now and how we process and communicate those feelings, while also injecting doses of fun into our day to day routine!

We focused on the following areas as “themes” for each day:

MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY

mind/body/breath

Blue & Gold 11
THURSDAY FRIDAY We journaled, danced, prayed, colored, meditated and reflected. We practiced yoga, incorporated mindful stretching into our gym classes, visited with Stripes and spent time outside enjoying campus. With help and guidance from so many different teachers, admin and staff, our students had a wonderful week and truly took the time to focus on different aspects of their own wellness, in addition to the wellness of their peers. gratitude

Mercy IN ACTION

Over the summer, 17 rising WMA 8th graders visited 5 different outreach partners with a chance to experience new ways of living the mercy charism. They spent each day in various culturally and economically diverse communities in the Greater Philadelphia Area. At the Saint Francis Inn, they helped this Franciscan community in Kensington prepare to celebrate Father’s Day with their guests.

They visited with both elderly and preschool students at Mercy Neighborhood Ministries, assisted The Aquinas Center with preparations for a summer camp that they offer for Afghan refugees and helped to maintain a community garden in Camden. Finally, at MANNA they packaged roughly 1,500 meals to be delivered to the homebound. We were thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity once again to our WMA students!

Waldron Mercy Academy and Waldron Mercy Child Care families collaborated to support Ukrainian refugee families by providing items such as diapers and wipes, snacks, medicine, and small stuffed animals. WMA families with children as young as Kindergarten volunteered at Cradles to Crayons, an organization that collects and distributes new and nearly new items such as books and clothing to local disadvantaged children. WMA families volunteered with the Lower Merion Conservancy and the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail to help maintain and plant trees along this trail. We hope these become additional established opportunities for WMA families to serve together.
“The poor need help today, not next week”
VENERABLE CATHERINE MCAULEY

This year, on the last day of school before Easter break, our 8th grade class had the incredible opportunity to lead students through the Stations of the Cross on the Motherhouse lawn.

“What a joy, and how uplifting it was to attend the WMA Stations of the Cross during Lent! As I ‘made the stations’ I was touched at the portrayal of the various stations by the eighth graders and the attention of the kindergarten class with whom I was walking. The prayer ended with a personal reflection by each student. Thank you teachers and students of WMA for such a lovely experience!”

SISTER SUZANNE GALLAGHER

All grades also had the opportunity to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation, and 8th grade teacher Katie DeSanto led a reflection/meditation for any students who wished to participate!

FAMILIES OF WALDRON

THE FORTENBERRY/GRIFFIN FAMILY

Keenan Fortenberry ‘17 currently attends Howard University and plays on their D1 football team. He had an amazing Freshman year, making Dean’s list fall semester and finishing out his Freshman year with honors!

Although Keenan graduated in 2017, the spirit of Waldron education resonates with him and his mother to this day. Coming to WMA was appealing to Kaci and Keenan for the small class sizes, the family-oriented reputation and the willingness to help anyone in need.

When asked what Mercy means to them, Keenan and Kaci described it as being “kind, thoughtful and grateful at all times,” which is absolutely true of the imprint they had on our Waldron community!

THE MCCLENNEN FAMILY

While the last McClennen graduated WMA in 1999, their spirit of Mercy and generosity still lives on in our community to this day. Karen McClennen, having taught at WMA herself, knew that her children would receive a quality education along with Mercy values here at Waldron.

The McClennen family enjoyed many aspects of the WMA community, but most notably that the teachers inspired their children “to think critically” and put a strong emphasis on writing. George McClennen also still serves on our Finance Committee and is an integral part of our organization!

THE BIRD FAMILY

The Bird family, while being brand new to Waldron in 2021, has quickly established themselves as an integral part of the WMA community. Jumping at the chance to volunteer their time and energy, Don and Catherine co-chaired the 2022 Tigerfest event with resounding success!

When asked about their favorite part of a Waldron education, the Birds were quick to respond:

“The way in which they truly love and care for our kids and family. The teachers and administration are very hands on and bring joy to work everyday! We also love the confidence they build, beyond just academics. They are truly preparing our girls at a young age to appreciate the world and seize every opportunity! From reading at the Christmas concert, to presenting their projects in kindergarten, they have discovered their voice and the power they have within themselves. That is a gift.”

We are so excited to have Michaela and Isabella as Waldron students and incredibly grateful for the joy and support from the entire Bird family!

THE MCGOVERN FAMILY

The McGovern family has been a wonderful part of our Waldron Mercy community since Jim attended and graduated in 1985. After marrying Christine, the pair sent their 4 children (Julia ‘15, Jimmy ‘16, Ella and current 6th grader Mason) to WMA as well. While they knew Waldron personally through Jim and his family, they were also attracted by the diversity of students and families, Catholic education and Mercy values, small class sizes and academic rigor.

To the McGovern family, Mercy is not just a saying but “a way of life,” which “blends compassion, empathy, critical thinking, respect and integrity.”

We are thrilled to have the McGovern family as alumni and to have Mason on campus for a few more years to come!

JOY OF DISCOVERY

Kindergarten Pumpkin Lab | Our kindergarten class had so much fun with Pumpkin Investigation 101 this past fall! Using four of their five senses, the students explored the pumpkin inside and out. The kindergarteners inspected and discussed the overall construction of the pumpkin and then took turns describing the attributes of every aspect. Just another way we incorporate FUN into STEM here at WMA!

6th Grade Rocket Day | Rocket Day is a highly anticipated event for students in grade six at WMA!

The students create rockets by upcycling 2 liter plastic bottles. They make the rockets aerodynamic by adding nose cones, fins and their own personal touch to the design. Then they determine how much water to add and predict how it will affect the pressure to weight ratio of the craft. Finally, they test their design by having it filled to 80 psi and… BLAST OFF! Using a mechanical rangefinder, they are able to see how far their rocket was able to fly into the sky.

A FULLY FLEXIBLE SPACE

When we envisioned transforming the cafeteria, faculty dining room, and kitchen area, our goal was to make these spaces more Mercy-driven, sustainable, energy-efficient, and multi-purpose. That vision has truly exceeded our expectations.

Once we were able to gather after the pandemic, a tremendous variety of spiritual, educational, and social functions filled the areas on a continuous basis. Class Retreats were conducted in the student dining room, and each morning in December a different homeroom gathered for an Advent ceremony to light the advent candle, pray, and sing with seventh grader Max playing violin. Quotes from our foundress, Catherine McAuley, and other Sisters of Mercy are displayed throughout the area. Our New Parents Reception found a home there, as did faculty professional development meetings, which became more efficient with a state-of-the art sound system heightening the presentations.

Pre-K students enjoyed a fun morning of playing Thanksgiving Bingo with their grandparents, big and little buddies in first and fifth grade collaborated to create natural bird feeders from peanut butter and pine cones, and fourth grade students designed and painted vibrant Easter eggs after meeting with Ms. Pavone’s former student Samantha Christian to explain the history of the Pisanki eggs. After dissecting the heart of a pig in their 7th grade science class, the students experienced a visit and presentation from WMA parent Dr. Matthew O’Connor, MD, an attending cardiologist in the Cardiac Center and the Medical Director of the Heart Failure and Transplant Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Using the new Smart TV gave the students a closer look into the inner workings of the human heart.

Parent “Cocktails and Conversation”, eighth grade graduation dance, and end-of-the year celebrations made their way into this re-designed space, as they were transformed into fun and vibrant theme areas.

18 Blue & Gold 18 The WMA Cafe

With a new pizza conveyor installed, students and faculty now enjoy pizza each day instead of once a week. Our Healthy Food Station is stocked with a variety of freshly-made salads, yogurt parfaits, crudite with hummus, and “power packs” with quinoa, hard boiled eggs, and veggies. A selection of beverages is now available to provide different options to accommodate faculty and students’ diverse tastes.

Energy-efficient equipment, maximized use of space, and re-usable trays help to implement the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy in care of the earth. In fact, many of the items from the previous cafeteria were donated to local organizations. Our old student tables are now in use at St. Martha’s School in Philadelphia and Hope for Kids - a faith-fueled camp empowering lives through mentoring and service.

Micah’s Scents

NAME : MICAH RUFFIN ‘25

BUSINESS NAME : MICAH’S SCENTS

DATE BUSINESS WAS ESTABLISHED : MAY 2020

What do you sell, and what made you want to sell these products?

We sell smooth, natural Shea Butter products and lotions. The reason why I wanted to sell them is because I have always had a passion for being a salesperson and I like business. When I was younger I thought that cool guys with businesses that wore fancy suits were awesome!

What’s one important lesson you’ve learned in owning a business?

Sell what you can and if you know that you can’t, then don’t. If you have a good product, sell it but don’t sell a bad product just for the money. Keep your quality high because you want people to know that you are a person of your word.

What advice would you give anyone wanting to start a business?

Never give up because there will be some things that will be tough. You’ll have to deal with the money, the product, and sales. You can do this with hard work, effort, and people to back you up.

What has WMA taught you about being a young entrepreneur?

My teachers have helped me to learn. Math is helping me to learn what I need for pricing and in Social Studies we learned a fun way to manage a business through a game.

LAUREN ANDERSON ’18 & VINCE VENTO ‘17

During our 8th grade retreat this past June, alumni Lauren Anderson ‘18 and Vince Vento ‘17 spoke to our Class of 2022 and shared some wisdom for the graduates.

Vince told the 8th graders to “appreciate their time at Waldron because, after graduating high school and finishing one year at Georgetown, I can promise that everything you learn at Waldron sets a strong base for future education.” He added that he would recommend “trying to find ways of giving back to underserved communities in ways that also interest you; not all service has to look the exact same.”

Lauren shared her belief that WMA “thoroughly prepares students as they go off to high school. I know this because I was able to succeed in high school thanks to Waldron’s strong emphasis on academics, athletics, and service.” Her best advice for the Class of 2022 was that “high school is about finding yourself so step outside of your comfort zone and try that new class, sport, and club!”

Thank you to Lauren and Vince for speaking with the Class of 2022 and sharing these thoughts!

ELIZABETH “LIZ” CAIN ‘92

“After graduating from Waldron Mercy, I attended the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur. During my sophomore year I took a government class, where I studied the Constitution. I concluded that the United States’ Constitution afforded us the best possible place to live in the world. I knew we were not perfect, but our great experiment was worth defending. Despite all our trials and tribulations, that remains the reason I serve – the great privilege to live my oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. I was expressing an interest in the Army since the age of nine, without much support from the people around me –they thought it was a phase. I joined ROTC in college my first year and that was it for me. To get to this point was challenging, but wow, has it taken me places, and afforded me the opportunity to live an amazing life.”

In May of 2000, Colonel Elizabeth M. Cain graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA with a dual degree in English and Government and Law. Following graduation from college, she was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps.

Elizabeth “Liz” Cain has had a very interesting career during her 22 years with the US Army. This mother of 6-year-old twins, Ronan and Rory and stepmom to Max, Eva, and Aaron, serves on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, at the Pentagon, and in January was promoted to Colonel in the US Army.

Her assignments over the years included serving at home and abroad. In 2007 to 2008 Liz served as the Company Commander of the 59th Military Police Company at al-Mada’in Qada, Iraq, where she led a company of 230 personnel and managed equipment valued at more than $30M. She supervised all operations and oversaw the Police Transition Team who supported Iraqi Police Stations in al-Mada’in. Liz conducted combat operations in conjunction with Iraqi Security Force counterparts and directed a team of subordinates through strenuous combat conditions east of Baghdad for 15 months. Here she diligently synchronized the efforts of the Iraqi Police leaders with Iraqi and US Army senior management and developed and implemented a training academy for a newly established Iraqi Police Emergency Response Unit.

Currently, she serves on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon in the J39 as an action officer within the Special Technical Operations Division. She also serves a collateral duty preparing General and Flag Officers to testify to Congress.

Liz also holds Master of Arts degrees in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University, in Public Policy Management from the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the National War College. She is a graduate of the National War College Class of 2021 and the FBI National Academy, Class 257.

Liz has been selected to serve as the Brigade Commander of the Soldier Readiness Brigade with Battalions at Walter Reed Medical Center and Fort Belvoir, VA. She and her husband Mike, along with Ronan and Rory, are residents of Arlington, Virginia.

ERIN MCKENNA ‘04

Since graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 2013, the United States Navy has sent Erin McKenna to many amazing places in the world, such as San Diego, Australia, the Solomon Islands, Guam, Singapore, Japan, and Alaska. Erin’s first assignment and deployment was on the USS Cape St. George, based in San Diego, CA. She then served aboard the USS Barry, whose homeport is Yokosuka, Japan. Erin served her “shore tour” at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, as the West Coast Admissions Representative, Navigations Instructor, and faculty advisor to the Triathlon Team. After completing her assignment in the Admission Office, Erin spent most of 2021 at Department Head School at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, preparing for her next assignment on the USS Gridley.

Erin is currently deployed as the Operations Officer aboard the USS Gridley, a guided missile destroyer, based in Everett, Washington. The Operations Officer coordinates the ship’s operations, training, and tactical planning. The top 3 officers on the Gridley are female and, like Erin, all are graduates of the United States Naval Academy! Erin is scheduled to return to Everett in August, after participating in RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific) exercises. RIMPAC is the world’s largest international maritime exercise involving 25,000 personnel from 26 countries.

One of Erin’s recent tasks was planning a “Tiger Cruise” from San Diego to Everett, Washington at the end of the deployment. The Tiger Cruise is a Navy tradition that allows family members of the deployed personnel to join the ship and sail back to the homeport. The family members spend time aboard the ship to learn about the ship’s day-to-day operations and what role their deployed son/daughter performs aboard the ship. Erin’s mom, Kate McKenna, the former technology director at WMA, is very excited to join the August Tiger Cruise! Erin’s dad, Fran McKenna, did the Tiger Cruise on Erin’s first ship from Hawaii to San Diego and declared it “the trip of a lifetime”!

Erin has spent her four years at the Naval Academy and nine years on active duty living one of the Navy’s slogans – “Join the Navy, See the World!” Erin’s assignments and 3 deployments have taken her from Annapolis, to San Diego, to Yokosuka, Japan, Newport, Rhode Island and Everett, Washington.

Erin is very proud to serve her country in the United States Navy!

REAGAN WAGGONER ‘19

Reagan is a student at Archmere Academy. Reagan’s Kindergarten teacher had a tremendous impact on her. She suggested that Reagan try a sport that her older sister was not involved in. She thought Reagan was shy and needed confidence. Soon after, she started riding horses. Reagan quickly found herself riding every day and working hard to improve her skills. Reagan is thankful for the encouragement and support she received in pursuing her love of horses and has won numerous equestrian competitions. “I have the teachers and principal to thank for their continued support. Teachers knew I frequently was home late and missed school for competitions. They supported my occasional need to work ahead on my classwork so that I would not get behind. I will never forget traveling to Ohio to compete, I had to miss school and I returned with the news that I qualified for Pony Finals. I remember sharing my amazing news with my 8th grade teachers and principal. I am now excited to announce that I plan to continue my riding career in college while I also study Biology.”

The elements are all there: decency, empathy, and unflappable goodwill. Even though he was new to the community this year, the recipient’s loyalty to Haverford is demonstrated not through a blind acceptance of the good and bad, but in his continual desire to improve the community.” “While some leaders shout their opinions, the recipient of this award leads by example.” We are proud of Mason and the leadership qualities he possesses. REMEMBERING SISTER CHRISTELLA

Sister Mary Christella Mitchell, RSM, age 84, died peacefully at McAuley Convent, in Merion, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.

Sister Christella was connected and dedicated to Mercy Education in various settings for over six decades, serving as principal, director, or teacher. Sister extended to all her wealth of knowledge, her wisdom of experience, her sense of humor and her compassionate, tender heart. Sister was a joyful participant in all the activities and functions that were a part of the Waldron Mercy Community, each day living out her motto: “Through Him, with Him and in Him.” Her true passion was the Montessori Program at Waldron Mercy Academy, and it was here that she lovingly nurtured the academic and spiritual lives of the very young.

Maria Montessori said, “Our care of the child should be governed, not by the desire to make him learn things, but by the endeavor to keep burning within him that light which is called intelligence.” Sister Christella fostered that light in each child she encountered along her life’s path. She focused on the uniqueness of each child and allowed them to explore and learn at their own pace. Her guidance, compassion and humor endeared her not only to her students but to all those she touched. She was a true leader you would turn to for guidance, and her wisdom and insight helped each of us to grow personally and professionally.

Even though her physical presence is gone, the spirit of Sister Christella continues to weave itself throughout the halls of Waldron Mercy Academy and in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched.

REMEMBERING

ANNE SMITH

Mrs. Anne Smith, who received her Montessori Training from Chestnut Hill College, began her teaching profession at Waldron Mercy Academy in 1987. She assumed the position of assistant, filling in as lead teacher when needed, and finally as a “full time volunteer” for the program. Her love for teaching the young child blossomed into a lifelong joy and she dedicated over 20 years teaching in the Montessori program.

Mrs. Smith was a gentle, compassionate teacher who exemplified the Montessori Method in her approach with children. Through the years she shared her passion and knowledge of art and introduced the children to the great artists of the world. She captivated the children with her ability to tell the story of the artists’ lives as well as their famous works of art. She incorporated a beautiful presentation of an artwork for the children to experience, and they cherished their time with Mrs. Smith as they created their own rendition. Many Waldron Montessori parents have framed their child’s portrayal of: Starry Nights, Water Lilies, Degas Dancers, and many more projects, all from Mrs. Smith’s exciting art lessons.

Upon her “retirement,” Mrs. Smith would spend countless hours in the Montessori workroom happily preparing materials and lessons for the students. Whenever she was working on a project, the children would be compelled to walk quietly by her work table - eager to get a glimpse of what Mrs. Smith was planning. They knew she was preparing something special for them and they would spread the word that, “Mrs. Smith was getting a new project ready for the class!”

Through the years, Mrs. Smith was generous with her time and humble in her approach to her students as she proudly watched them grow and develop in their love of learning. She was loved by her students, the parents, and the Waldron Mercy staff. We will remember Mrs. Anne Smith for the kind, loving and dedicated teacher who is now a part of our Waldron Mercy Academy history.
