The end of the academic year brings a flourish of activities, including the most important event for our student-athletes who have been with us four years … graduation. All of our senior athletes graduated again this year. Their pursuit of academic excellence the last four years has paid off with a degree from Wake Forest. Their Wake Forest diploma will be a valuable asset to them throughout the rest of their lives. It would not have been possible for many of them to attend Wake Forest without your generous support of the Deacon Club Annual Fund that supplies the athletic scholarships. Seventy-four Wake Forest athletes received their undergraduate or graduate degrees on May 16th … THANK YOU! Meanwhile, our spring teams are finishing their seasons in grand style. As I write this letter, men’s tennis made it to the NCAA Tournament “Sweet Sixteen” in Tulsa; men’s golf finished in the top 5 of the Tucson Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship in Oregon; baseball won two games in the ACC Tournament and earned a NCAA at-large bid for the first time since 2007; women’s tennis advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regionals for the first time since 2009 but ultimately lost a hard-fought battle in the first round; women’s golf competed in the NCAA Stanford Regional,

and although the team didn’t advance, freshman Jennifer Kupcho finished sixth individually at the NCAA Championship; track and field is sending four men and six women to compete at the NCAA Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. It continues to be an excellent spring competitively, and the majority of our teams will return a strong nucleus of players next year. We’ve got some good years ahead of us!

The ACC Athletics Directors met last week for our annual spring meetings. As has been the case the last few years, there was much media interest in the potential of an ACC channel.

Commissioner John Swofford met with the media after our meetings and stated that there is mutual interest in such a channel but that there is nothing to announce at this time. We all recognize the importance of the ACC’s path forward with its media package and are confident that our discussions will be fruitful.

FRESHMAN DENNIS USPENSKY’S ON-COURT EDUCATION TURNS THE DEACONS INTO CHAMPIONS

ake Forest was on the verge of one of its biggest wins in men’s tennis history, and Dennis Uspensky was just the man to give it to them. After all, he had been there before.

When all was said and done, the freshman won the clinching match in the Deacons’ victory over juggernaut Virginia, earning the first ACC championship in program history.

WFU battled back and forth with the Cavaliers on April 24 in Cary. UVa was ranked No. 1 nationally, with a record nine consecutive conference titles under its belt, but the Deacons kept up with them, forging a 3-3 tie as Uspensky, a first-semester freshman, faced off in a third and deciding set against Luca Corinteli.

With everyone on both teams now focused on him, Uspensky focused on lessons learned from his past. On March 6, Uspensky had a similar opportunity to close out N.C. State at home, but lost the third set 6-3.

“I didn’t deal with that very well,” Uspensky said. “It was only my second ACC match; I had only been here half a semester, and I wasn’t prepared for that kind of pressure. I feel like I’ve matured a lot since then.”

“WITH EVERYBODY CHEERING FOR ME, IT REALLY WAS A TEAM EFFORT, AND IT’S A MOMENT I KNOW I’LL REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.” That much is certain, because this time things ended differently.

The New York native won a tiebreaker 7-4 to secure the conference title, setting off an emotional on-court celebration.

“I just cleared my mind and focused on the match,” Uspensky said. “I was able to take my time, do the best I can and not worry too much about the outcome. It was huge that I got to have that experience earlier in a less crucial situation.

“With everybody cheering for me, it really was a team effort, and it’s a moment I know I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

It was the culmination of a bunch of memorable moments for the Deacons – first berth in the ITA National Indoors Championship, first top-5 national ranking, first wins over the No. 2 and No. 1 teams in the country. And Uspensky has been an integral part of all of them.

The freshman was born in Atlantic Beach, N.Y., to Russian parents, then spent much of his teens in Spain. He also trained in Florida for a year before coming to Wake Forest in January, so his well-rounded game has been shaped by coaches and opponents around the world.

“I first picked up a racquet when I was 5,” Uspensky said. “I played a lot of sports, but by the time I was 7 or 8, I knew I liked tennis the best. My parents also knew I was exceptional, better than a lot of the players around me, so I started playing junior tournaments. It’s been a great journey so far.”

But, he said, nothing could have prepared him for the rigors of college tennis other than actually doing it.

Going from

insider to fan: GO DEACS! At the 1995 ACC men’s basketball tournament, I got three Deacon-head decals from longtime administrator and superfan Julie Griffin – one each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as Wake Forest rolled to the championship.

The decals became a ritual and a superstition for Julie and me that weekend.

I was at the Greensboro Coliseum as a member of the working media, so mindful of “no cheering in the press box” decorum, I hid the decals on the inside of my sportcoat each day.

Close to my heart.

That was my second year covering the Deacons for Gold Rush, and it might still be the most memorable weekend of my tenure. Twenty-one years later, I’m leaving the magazine after this issue, ready to cheer more openly as a fan instead of writing about the program as an insider.

The unforgettable moments I’ve gotten the chance to write about have been countless, from the night I invaded the Orange Bowl with 20,000 of my fellow alumni, to the national team championships in field hockey and men’s soccer, to the individual champs and smaller day-today success stories that define every season. It continues in this issue, with a look at the new ACC men’s tennis champions.

But the best part of Wake Forest has always been its people. From student-athletes to coaches, staff members to devoted fans, I’ve met so many people on a regular basis who make me proud to be a Deacon. That’s what I’ll miss most.

I kept those Deacon decals from Julie for many years, misplacing them only recently when my family and I moved from North Carolina to Florida.

But the spirit of the gift remains. And now I can say it as loud as I always wanted: Go Deacs!

“I felt like there was so much I didn’t know, especially when it came to the college atmosphere and the increased pressure it brings,” Uspensky said. “As I’ve done it more and more, I’ve gotten more confidence in my academics and in my game.”

Wake Forest coach Tony Bresky has been thrilled with Uspensky’s development.

“He showed us what he can do early on – I think he’s one of the better freshmen in the entire country,” Bresky said. “But to win against Virginia the way he did showed his growth and improvement through the year.”

A veteran of three junior Grand Slam events, Uspensky came to Winston-Salem with a big serve, and while he said the other parts of his game have gotten the needed attention, learning how all of his skills fit together may have been the biggest thing he learned this year.

“My returns of serve have gotten better, but I really feel like with the coaches’ help, I’ve gotten more intelligent on the court,” Uspensky said. “I implemented more of a mental game – the game slowed down and my shot selection has gotten better.”

Uspensky’s intelligence extends off the court, too. His goal is to get into business school – he’s already planning to take economics in the fall and accounting next spring – but he’s equally eager to discuss

He said he considers himself the player most likely to get a laugh in the locker room.

“I joke around a lot to keep everybody loose,” Uspensky said. “I’m never really that serious until I get on the court.”

Once he closed out the ACC win, though, the fun really got started for the Deacons. Students rolled the quad and a large contingent of fans welcomed the team bus back to campus.

“It was a great feeling,” Bresky said.

“The amount of emails, texts and voicemails I got were even more than I expected. It’s amazing to see how many

people care about this program, and it’s something I think the guys really embraced and enjoyed.”

Hopefully, it can be the first of many championships for Uspensky and Wake Forest.

FIELD HOCKEY’S VALERIE DAHMEN RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS ACC POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

t’s not field hockey season, but it is the season for studentathletes in all sports to be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their teams, universities and communities with various awards. Valerie Dahmen has earned some prestigious awards for both her athletic and academic endeavors, but she recently received a major award for both of those and for her social and service contributions.

Dahmen was one of 52 student-athletes honored as an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient at the annual Cone

Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club and presented by ESPN on April 13 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro.

demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.

“Receiving the ACC Scholarship was an absolute amazing experience,” Dahmen said. “The selection process is quite rigorous, and I felt very honored for even being considered as one of the potential recipients. Whenever

staff and Brooke have been nothing short of amazing and always been very supportive of my postgraduate plans. I loved representing Wake Forest at the banquet and spending the day amongst many other top scholars and athletes.”

Dahmen has proven to be very socially aware, an advocate and service-oriented, giving of her time in many charitable ways and to many worthy causes in the Wake Forest and surrounding Winston-Salem communities. During her time at Wake Forest, she has participated in Santa’s Helper, Eat With the Deacs, Wake N’ Shake, Habitat for Humanity, the Wake Forest Open, Weed Whackers and has served as a youth field hockey coach in various clinics.

“I think that athletes live a very privileged life,” Dahmen said. “I am fortunate enough to graduate from college

without any student loans, we get to travel the country while doing what we love, and while we sacrifice a lot, I always thought that I received more than I gave. Therefore, I got very involved in community service at Wake and Winston-Salem as a whole.

“My best friend and roommate, Krysta Wangerin, is one of the student-athletes with the most community service hours at our school, and we sometimes do community service together. Living in a city like Winston-Salem, but then again living on Wake’s campus and in Wake’s bubble, has really opened my eyes to the needs of our community and the little we do can go a really long way.

“My brother battled cancer numerous times throughout his teenage years, so I got very involved as a cancer advocate throughout my years at Wake. I was on the committee for

CHOSE WAKE FOREST: “ I visited several schools, but no school gave me the same feeling that Wake did,” Dahmen said. “My brother, who escorted me on my visits, and I fell in love with the campus, the coaching staff and my future teammates.

One of my best friends was already attending UNC and told me that I would never win a championship if I would choose Wake over other schools, and what can I say. I like being challenged.

I loved the reputation of Wake hockey, even though they were struggling at the time. I loved the idea of helping a program return to its former greatness and that I could be at a key position throughout the process. I did not want to go to a program that already was at the top and was just training to maintain. I was hungry for victory and especially hungry for change.”

TOP ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS: As a senior, she was a NFHCA All-America Third Team Selection; All-South Region First Team Selection. Her 5.42 saves per game ranked her second in the conference and her .759 save percentage was a career best.

Wake N’ Shake and organized the Spike Out Melanoma Spikeball Tournament numerous times. As I said, a little can go a long way, and especially throughout my senior spring at Wake, where I did not have field hockey in my life anymore, I tried to make giving back a priority.”

The rest of the story is that when she wasn’t studying, helping in the community or working to find a cure for a disease, Dahmen was a spectacular field hockey goalkeeper. Since her junior year, Dahmen has anchored the Wake Forest field hockey team in goal and over that time has helped the Deacons earn 27 wins against 13 losses.

It’s one thing to suit up and play in the field, but it takes a special kind of athlete to sit back as the last line of defense and face the game from in-goal.

“Goalkeepers typically have the reputation to be somewhat weird, and I guess you sort of have to be weird,” Dahmen said. “I mean, you get hit with balls that can reach up to 100 mph and actually enjoy it. So goalkeepers have an odd reputation. However, my teammates always say that I am the most normal goalkeeper they have ever met. Not sure if it is a compliment, but I will take it.

“Other than that, my position is just very unique. It does not entail a lot of running but you still have to go through the same

workouts as your teammates and do extra sessions. It is important to be quite agile, quick and explosive as a goalkeeper, especially if you have to make up for height.

I started my career as a striker, which I think I benefitted from a lot in the beginning because I had the mindset of a striker, and I understood what she was trying to do.

“Ultimately, I turned out to be a much better goalkeeper, so I stopped doing both eventually. However, I believe that it was really important for my development as an athlete to be able to play both positions.

Additionally, being a goalkeeper can be quite an ungrateful job. You sometimes just stand there for about 68 minutes and receive the

one game-changing shot in the last minute, and if you have zoned out by then, you might end up losing the game for your team. It can be quite depressing. I love being challenged, and the more shots I receive during a game the better I usually get.”

The Wake Forest field hockey program is regarded as one of the best in the nation, and it just completed a third straight and 15th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest has won three national titles in program history, claiming back-to-back-to-back crowns from 2002-04.

Wake Forest won its first ACC title since 2006 with Dahmen in goal during her junior season. Upon completion of her senior season, she ranked 14th nationally in save percentage and 20th in goals against average. She was ranked 12th in the nation in goalie win-loss percentage.

“I had quite the decorated career, especially my senior season; however, I think what I am most proud of are not any of the awards or honors I have but that I was selected to be the team captain by my coaching staff and my teammates,” Dahmen said.

“While my position is quite individual, I have always been a team player and a somewhat natural leader. I have learned so much about leadership, my teammates and myself as a person. Leading a team

is not always easy, can sometimes be a challenging and ungrateful task and even lonely. However, I soon learned how rewarding this position can be as well. I absolutely love Wake Forest Athletics and getting to represent our institution, Wake hockey and all alumnae that have ever worn the jersey has been such an honor.”

As far as favorite memories, Dahmen said that winning the ACC championship was her personal favorite but added that beating UNC throughout her senior season after not having won the last 15 games against the Tar Heels was huge.

So what’s next for Dahmen? She will use her well-earned ACC postgraduate scholarship to help her attend Duke University and begin a new journey that will lead to the next.

“I looked into several options for grad school, and I applied to several law schools as well as business schools,” she said.

“Being a lawyer has always been a dream of mine, but with the saturated attorney market and my visa situation it would be quite difficult for me to work in the U.S. or in Germany. So I ultimately decided to go to business school where I can utilize my language skills – I speak German, Spanish and English, and have a much broader, global perspective in the job market.”

Another successful year is in the books for Wake Forest athletics. From the individual achievements of standouts such as Robert Heppenstall and Jessie Merckle, to team milestones set by the tennis and soccer programs, plus so much more, the program has plenty to brag about. Gold Rush’s Jay Reddick asked Director of Athletics Ron Wellman via email for his impressions of the season.

RON WELLMAN ATHLETICS DIRECTOR LOOKS BACK AT ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF 2015-16 SEASON

GOLD RUSH: The success of both tennis programs is finishing the year off right. Talk about the job that those two coaches have done in building programs that look like possible ACC and national contenders for years to come.

WELLMAN: Both Tony Bresky and Jeff Wyshner are building sustainable championship programs. Championships are won with outstanding athletes and excellent coaching, which we have in both programs. Tony and Jeff have attracted top-ranked recruiting classes that have put us in this position. Once the recruits get to campus, both coaches have done a superb job of developing the talents of their athletes. The third critical factor in building a championship caliber program is excellent facilities. We certainly have that covered with the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. It’s exciting to think about us hosting the NCAA Championships in both men and women’s tennis in 2018 as both of our programs should be strong contenders to go very deep in the tournament that year.

GOLD RUSH: It seems like the biggest long-term impact of this year might come from the opening of McCreary Field House, and yet, that’s obviously still a work in progress. What positive gains have you seen in just the short time the facility has been available, and how specifically do you see its impact down the line in both development and recruiting?

WELLMAN: McCreary Field House began paying dividends to our department the week that it opened in January. We had a snow storm that week and five teams (football, baseball, men and women’s soccer and field hockey) were able to practice because they were able to use McCreary Field House for their workouts. The benefits have

continued since then as well. Football had their spring practices in it. There were some days that it would have been challenging to have great practices outdoors due to inclement weather but McCreary Field House solved that problem. Every practice was productive because the elements were perfect. Going forward, McCreary Field House will become even more impactful for our program. Recruiting in all sports will be enhanced as the facility demonstrates our commitment to excellence. Our teams will be better prepared competitively because they will practice in optimum conditions. McCreary Field House will be an asset for Wake Forest athletics for decades.

GOLD RUSH: The basketball programs also feel like teams that could be successful in the long haul. Starting with the men, a player like Bryant Crawford seems like a great building block for the future, even after a year that fell short of hoped-for success.

WELLMAN: We played a schedule this year that was rated as the toughest in the country. We started the season with impressive wins against UCLA, Indiana, LSU, Rutgers and Arkansas but then hit a stretch of games (Xavier, Louisville, Duke, Virginia Tech) that we lost in heartbreaking fashion. We never really recovered from that stretch of frustrating losses. However, there is every reason to believe that we have a very good future. Danny (Manning) and his staff have recruited well. The one class that he had a full year to recruit produced Bryant Crawford, John Collins and Doral Moore.

All of our fans can see that they will be very good ACC players.

This year’s class looks to be equally good. The combination of a good core of returning players plus another good incoming class gives me confidence about our future.

GOLD RUSH: Jen Hoover’s Deacs just keep getting better and better. What is the measuring stick for women’s basketball going forward as they keep pushing toward an NCAA berth and more?

WELLMAN: Jen led the team to postseason play this year, which was a significant step. The team also continued their good play in the ACC Tournament (we have won at least one game in the ACC Tournament eight consecutive years, which is the longest streak of any team in the conference). We were hampered by injuries this year. At times, we only had seven players available. Even with that adversity, the players and coaches never doubted themselves and were determined to improve as the season progressed. They achieved that goal and were rewarded by advancing to the WNIT. Like the men, the women return a strong nucleus next year with

another good recruiting class. I anticipate the team taking another step forward next season and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

GOLD RUSH: Both department athletes of the year made their presence felt in a big way — Jack Harrison set records in his single season and helped Wake Forest to the Elite Eight before moving on to what figures to be a standout pro career. What does a guy like that mean to the athletic program in terms of name value?

WELLMAN: Jack was the National High School Player of the Year last year. Whenever a player of that caliber joins your program, it makes a strong statement to other recruits as well as our fans. Many local soccer fans came to our games to specifically watch Jack play but ended up becoming Wake Forest soccer fans. The men’s program led the nation

in attendance this year, and some of the credit goes to the excitement of having Jack on our team. A number of our soccer alums are having excellent professional careers, and I anticipate Jack being a very successful professional as well.

GOLD RUSH: Jessie Merckle’s story is more about sustained excellence. Talk about her impact as a representative of Wake Forest.

WELLMAN: Jessie is an excellent representative of our program. She obviously has achieved so much competitively as she was just honored with her third All-ACC award. Beyond that, she has also been someone who has done everything you could ask of a student-athlete. She is an excellent student and has been very active in various volunteer endeavors. She is so appreciative of the opportunity that has been given to her and she has taken full advantage of that opportunity.

GOLD RUSH: What are the things you reflect on the most from your 24 years here? Is it the winning moments, the athletes, the coaches, other challenges?

WELLMAN: There will be plenty of time to reflect upon those moments sometime in the future. Right now, I am only focused on our future which I am confident is really, really good.

Well, this is the last edition of Gold Rush for the 2015-16 athletic year. A lot has happened since this past summer when I started writing generally about football, then basketball – and then a little baseball with some personal tidbits and other things sprinkled in here and there. Thank you for letting me be somewhat random with these columns.

I usually sit down at the computer with absolutely no idea what I’m going to write about – heck, I’ve even written about how I write before. Same this time.

I’m not sure where these next few paragraphs will take us, but I want to start with baseball. Specifically junior Will Craig.

Craig, a fellow Tennessean I’m proud to say, motored through his sophomore season a year ago, was

everybody’s All-American and the ACC Player of the Year. By the time you read this, he may even have been named Player of the Year for the second straight season. I have no idea when that’s voted on, and I don’t get a vote. But if I did, I’d take about a millisecond before casting my vote for the free-swinging Johnson City native with the 1970s head of hair and the million-dollar smile. He’s had another incredible season of college baseball.

In my view, he’s still the star in a league of stars and worthy of becoming the first Demon Deacon to receive POY honors in back-to-back seasons since Hall of Famer Bill Merrifield in the early 1980s. Wake Forest beat writer Dan Collins of the Winston-Salem Journal wrote a story recently that basically asked if Craig was the best to ever have played baseball in a Wake Forest uniform. It’s a question that can be argued but never definitively answered. As for me and the 20 seasons I’ve watched Wake baseball – no question. Craig is at the top of the list.

Craig received exactly three scholarship offers, but Wake was the only “big school” who wanted him.

Tip of the cap to Tom Walter and staff for that. Now the question is will Craig play a senior season at Wake or turn pro? There are probably several million reasons that we’ll never see him play another game in WinstonSalem in a Deacon uniform – a lock for a first-round pick in the next Major League draft and likely to go in the first 20 selections. There’s nothing left for him to show the big league scouts.

So, his days as a Deacon are likely done or nearly so if by chance the Deacs are still alive and playing in the NCAA Tournament as you

read this. And that’s what I want to spend the next few paragraphs on – Craig’s exit or almost exit from this season’s home finale.

Craig started all three games of Wake’s recent baseball series against Louisville at third base. In the third game, the final home game of the season for the Deacs, Craig was called from third base to the mound to pitch in relief in the ninth inning.

Then, another pitching change was made, and Craig began to make his way from the mound to the Wake Forest dugout.

It then hit the home crowd – this was likely going to be it for Craig at Wake Forest. The last they would ever see of him who, one could argue, was the best there ever was at Wake Forest. A real life Roy Hobbs.

Fans all over David Couch Ballpark stood to cheer for their hero as he left the game – or so they thought.

Just as Craig made it to the first base foul line he stopped. Turned around. And headed back to third base. Inwardly, I smiled. I thought, like many, that Tom Walter was going to give Craig a moment.

Instead, I suppose it was more like “we can’t do without you, now get back out to third base, you’re not going anywhere.”

Whatever actually transpired in that “almost exit” moment – it fit. If ever a player deserved to be on the field and playing in every moment of every game it is Will Craig. He has been the heart and soul of Wake Forest baseball since his arrival on campus three seasons ago. Wow, just three? It seems like he’s been here forever. I’m sure the other ACC teams sure feel that way.

So assuming he’s off to the Major Leagues – here’s to you Will. What a joy it’s been to watch you compete in the Old Gold and Black. And if unforeseen circumstances bring him back for one more season?

Wow, hadn’t really thought that one through.

It is with great pride and gratitude that I report that we are having another record-breaking fundraising year for our athletic programs. It is because of the continued generosity of our donors that we have been able to achieve these impressive results for the last two years.

When comparing our fundraising results to our fellow ACC schools, Wake Forest is the only school besides Clemson to grow cash gifts in each of the last three years from $13,182,000 in 2012 to $26,833,000 in 2015. In addition – and perhaps even more impressive – our new capital pledges over the last two years are the highest in the ACC with a two-year total of $47,100,000. That’s right — we are ACC Champions in the capital facility-funding race

as we have numerous projects recently completed, under construction or pending groundbreaking.

However, as we wind down the 2016 giving year that ends on June 30, we need your help in continuing this impressive momentum in order to fulfill two critical areas of support.

The first critical area is our Annual Scholarship Fund. Our Annual Fund is the backbone of our program as all funds are devoted to offsetting scholarship costs. Last year our Annual Fund grew 9.11 percent, representing the fifth highest growth rate in the ACC. However, the gap between funds raised for scholarships vs. scholarship costs continues to widen. In fact, 26.4 percent of the Wake Forest Athletic Department operating budget is spent each year on scholarships – one of the highest percentages in the ACC. Reducing this number through donations to the Annual Fund allows more dollars to be spent each year on the operating expenses of the department, increasing the ability to provide additional resources to our student-athletes.

So, how can you help? If you have not done so already, please be sure to renew your Deacon Club membership at 110% or a higher giving level by June 30. If you have already renewed, we cannot thank you enough for your support. If you’re interested in furthering your support, there’s still time to upgrade to a higher giving level. Secondly, we need to continue our facility build out by funding the remaining amount needed for the Sports Performance Center. Generous Donors Help Wake Forest Tennis Break Ground on New Seating

W

ake Forest Athletics began work in April on phase two of the expansive Wake Forest Tennis Complex initiative. Phase two, the Southern Family Court Seating at the Leighton Team Courts, involves the construction of 718 permanent, chairback seats around all six collegiate courts/Winston-Salem Open practice courts. An impressive $1.75 million was raised including a significant gift from

Winston-Salem natives Harold, Mildred, Hal and Debbie Southern.

The new seating is a big step forward for the Winston-Salem Open, an ATP World Tour 250 event and the last men’s tournament on the Emirates Airline US Open Series prior to the US Open.

“The addition of the Southern Family Court Seating will allow intimate access to watch quality tennis during the Winston-Salem Open and Wake Forest collegiate matches,” Debbie

Construction began in April on the Southern Family Court Seating at the Leighton Team Courts.

Southern said. “Permanent seating gives a venue more appeal and prestige for the players competing as well as the spectators watching.”

Don Flow, chairman of the Board of Directors for the Winston-Salem Open, spoke to his vision for the tournament and the impact of this new seating: “Our goal is to create an outstanding experience for the fans of the WinstonSalem Open and to create the No. 1-ranked collegiate tennis center in the United States. The completion of the Southern Family Court Seating will take us well down this road for Wake Forest tennis and continues our efforts to develop a distinctive venue for the Winston-Salem Open.”

The Wake Forest tennis program, which recently won the men’s tennis ACC Championship, will also greatly benefit from the new seating.

“We are very excited about the addition of the Southern Family Court Seating,” said Tony Bresky, men’s tennis head coach. “This is another great addition to what is already one of the best college tennis facilities in the nation.”

The Wake Forest Tennis Complex has indeed been ranked one of the best in the country – in October 2015 Tennis.com ranked the facility No. 3 in the country, only behind SMU Tennis Complex at Southern Methodist University (No. 2) and Hurd Tennis Center at Baylor (No. 1).

Jeff Wyshner, women’s tennis head coach, discussed the impact of the improved fan experience on the team: “Fans will be able to watch multiple courts from above and behind the courts, and it will really help the team to have fans surrounding the courts.”

In addition to having a significant impact on the Wake Forest tennis program and the Winston-Salem Open, improvements to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex also positively impact the city of Winston-Salem.

“Improvements like the Southern Family Court Seating allow us to host other events in addition to the Winston-Salem Open like the NCAA Championships in 2018 and statewide

tournaments,” said Bill Oakes, WinstonSalem Open tournament director. “Being able to bring events such as these to the city of Winston-Salem definitely brings economic impact to the community.”

n each issue, Where Are They Now showcases a former Wake Forest student-athlete. Liza Casella (’11) competed for the Wake Forest field hockey team from 2007-10, helping the Demon Deacons to a 61-27 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances in her time in the Old Gold & Black. With the Rutland, Vt., native serving as a key piece in the team’s backfield, the Deacs posted 11 shutouts in her four seasons. Casella also recorded four goals and 10 assists as a Deacon. In addition, she was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 2008 in Wake Forest’s run to the championship game and picked up a Second Team NFHCA All-South Region honor in 2010.

I am wildly thankful to Wake Forest and proud to call myself a Demon Deacon.

My four years at Wake were some of the best years of my life – and that doesn’t mean everything was always peachy. I was constantly challenged, faced with adversity, had fallen down several times and built and lost friendships and relationships over the course of my college career. But with the challenges came opportunity, and Wake taught me invaluable lessons and a set of skills that I have and will continue to apply throughout the rest of my life: grit, determination, relentlessness, heart, compassion, humility and pride.

Who is your favorite coach at Wake Forest, current or past?

Well that’s easy … Jen Averill. I remember coming to campus as a sophomore in high school for summer camp. I was in complete awe at the beauty of the campus and struck by an immediate and overwhelming feeling of family when I watched the interaction of the coaching staff and players. When I met with Jen, she told me I had only tapped 40 percent of my athletic potential from a hockey perspective and that she wanted to develop the other 60 percent of what I could become. I left campus knowing Wake was where I wanted to be – because of the family dynamic and commitment to develop me as a player, student and woman. What makes Jen so unique is her ability to empower and build strong, independent women with humility, grace and a cultured perspective.

Wake Forest University held its annual commencement ceremonies on May 16 on Hearn Plaza in front of Wait Chapel. Seventy-four Demon Deacon student-athletes received their undergraduate or graduate degrees.

The 2016 commencement speaker this year was Eboo Patel, a leading voice for interfaith cooperation and the founder and president of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC). He was on President Obama’s inaugural Faith Council and is a regular contributor to the public conversation around religion in America.

Following the ceremony, Wake Forest Athletics held a reception in the Miller Center for its graduating student-athletes.

Summer Employment

With the summer months approaching, student-athletes all over the country will be looking for ways to make a little extra money before returning to school in the fall. There is often confusion about the rules regarding the employment of student-athletes. Given the number of recent high-profile cases involving impermissible benefits to student-athletes, many Deacon supporters as well as other local employers are left wondering whether they can or should hire current student-athletes.

NCAA rules do permit student-athletes to be employed, and unlike years past, there are no limits on the amount of money they may earn.

There are standards that govern the process by which student-athletes are hired and how they can be compensated, however.

The first stipulation is that a student-athlete cannot be hired strictly based on his or her reputation as a student-athlete. All normal

hiring practices (e.g. completion of application, interview) must be followed, and all prerequisites and qualifications for the job in question must be met. Further, student-athletes can only be paid for work that has been performed at the time payment was received. Compensation must also be commensurate with the going rate for the particular type of work performed. Additionally, any perks associated with a job, such as a company car, free meals, entertainment etc. must be available to all employees.

In cases where student-athletes are hired to perform odd jobs on a temporary basis (e.g. moving furniture), such opportunities must be publicized and open to the general public.

While student-athletes are not precluded from these types of opportunities, they may not be handpicked for these jobs.
