Wrapping up an exciting spring and looking forward to fall…

Dear Demon Deacons, Heading into the last few weeks of the spring sports season, a number of our teams are poised to challenge for a bid to their respective NCAA tournaments. Men’s tennis, baseball, men’s and women’s golf and a number of track and field athletes are all in good position to advance to post-season play. Both golf programs and men’s tennis, in particular, are highly ranked nationally and could advance deep in their tournaments. It could prove to be a spring of excitement for Deacon fans and significant accomplishments for our teams.

With the conclusion of the spring season comes the anticipation of the fall sports calendar. The popularity of ACC football nationally is at an all-time high. One measurement of ACC football’s national popularity is its TV ratings last year.

Some of those ratings highlights are: • The ACC is the highest-rated conference in terms of average rating, households and viewers delivered on ABC/ESPN/ ESPN2 for both home games and all appearances.

• The ACC is the strongest overall conference across the five major regions of the country.

• In the Southeast markets, the traditional ACC footprint, the ACC and SEC are far ahead of the other three Power 5 conferences in terms of local average ratings for games on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2.

• In the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic markets, the new ACC footprint, the ACC is the highest rated Power 5 conference in terms of local average ratings for games on ABC/ESPN/ ESPN2.

• The ACC remains the second highest-rated conference in the Midwest and Pacific behind the Big Ten and Pac-12, which is their home footprint, and is just slightly behind the SEC for second in the Mountain/Southwest region (Big 12 in first place).

The New York City, Chicago and Louisville markets all produced strong ratings for the ACC last fall. Of course, each city is a new market for the ACC. The ratings achieved in those markets are the result of the new ACC schools (Syracuse, Notre Dame and Louisville) in those areas. As new rivalries continue to develop with those new schools, there is every reason to anticipate that future ratings will be even stronger, not only in the new ACC footprint, but throughout the entire geography of the ACC .

We look forward to finishing strong this spring and anticipate another exciting year in 2015-16. I look forward to cheering the Deacs to many victories with you.

SPRING PREPARATIONS WFU FOOTBALL TEAM SHOWS PROGRESS ON BOTH OFFENSE AND DEFENSE AS IT CONCLUDES SPRING DRILLS WITH THE ANNUAL SPRING GAME

ith the Final Four being completed earlier in the week, and the Masters in full swing, college football may have seemed a little out of place. But on April 11, Wake Forest unveiled the latest edition of the football team at the 2015 Spring Game after the completion of spring drills.

think we’ll be solid. I’m happy with the Spring Game, and we’re ahead of where we were last year and ahead of where we were at the start of spring. It’s been a lot different this spring because the offense has already been installed, and the defense has already been installed. You are coaching more of the details, and much of it is just player development.

As Dave Clawson enters his second season as head coach, the team voted on captains for next season.

Brandon Chubb, Hunter Williams, Ryan Janvion, Alex Kinal and Dylan Intemann received the honor of leading the team into the fall campaign.

“We have so many young players. You look at our offense and there’s five, six, seven freshmen out there.

They’ve been redshirted and been in the weight room for a year, and learned our offensive terminology.

So now it was just getting them out there to get as many plays as possible so they get more and more comfortable every time they come out here.”

The teams for the Spring Game were formed through a draft, and the White Team ended up with four of the five starting offensive linemen, which gave that unit a decided advantage. However, every player got a chance to participate, and this was more than just a very organized scrimmage.

“I thought overall it was a pretty clean game, and we’re making progress on offense and defensively,” Clawson said of the play on a warm and sunny afternoon. “I

Tabari Hines caught four balls for 47 yards, including one touchdown, and had a couple of rushes for 23 yards.

John Armstrong had three kick returns for 98 yards, including one for 58 yards, and Mike Weaver hit field goals of 46, 45 and 31 yards to highlight special teams play.

“I think it’s a fact we didn’t have playmakers last year,” Clawson said. “(Now) I think we’re better than we were, and I think it will get better when we get three tailbacks and more receivers coming in here in July. It was good to get (guys like Cam Serigne, Crump and Hines) touches because they’re solid players, and we need to find some guys who can make big plays. Tabari (Hines), he (shows) flashes, and clearly with the touchdown, but also those five-yard plays where he makes a guy miss and it turns into an 11-yard play and a first down. That keeps the sticks moving.”

Sophomore John Wolford, who started at quarterback last year, completed 21-of-33 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for the White Team. True freshman quarterback Kendall Hinton showed his potential with his mobility and ability to run while completing 10-of-21 passes for 139 yards.

Dez Wortham led all rushers with 13 carries for 55 yards, and he also caught a 12-yard TD pass.

Jared Crump and Jon Williams each had six catches, and Cortez Lewis led all receivers with 87 yards on four grabs. True freshman

“The offensive line was way better, way more physical and aggressive, and experience plays a part in that with a new offense,” he said.

“They had way more confidence, and I was proud to see how they fired off the ball and protected the quarterback.”

Wolford said he can see the difference from last fall to spring.

“Over time, especially in the offseason, you get stronger and faster and all those things you are able to do in the weight room are going to show up,” he said. “Personally, I got more time with receivers, and guys are knowing what they are doing coming out of breaks. It’s not perfect, but there’s progress you can see. I think for me timing with the receivers is the thing, I want to get in shape and get faster to be able to evade pressure and make some things happen scrambling.

Clawson seemed pleased with what has happened since the end of the 2014 season when the Deacons went 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the ACC. Bigger, stronger and faster is what the Wake Forest football team is.

During the offseason testing, 31 players had lift totals of more than 1,100 pounds (up from 26 a year ago), and 20 players had substantial weight gains listed in the Spring Game notes.

“If you just look at how we run the ball, are we ripping off 12-and-15 and 20-yard runs?”

Clawson asked. “No, but now everything is getting back to the line of scrimmage and getting positive yards. I think we gave up less sacks, and we’ve got to avoid all the negative yardage plays we had last season.”

Chubb, a linebacker and one of the team captains, noted the improvement.

“I think we have some guys competing right now (to be playmakers), and every single position at receiver has competition. As the summer progresses, some guys are going to step up.”

Defensively, Chubb led Team Black with 12 tackles, and Zack Wary led Team White with eight tackles. Willie Yarbary was credited with two sacks, and Grant Dawson and Thomas Brown each had two tackles for losses.

Gone are standout cornerbacks Merrill “Bud” Noel and Kevin Johnson, and while those kind of players are difficult to replace, Chubb said that the Deacon defense has made adjustments to temper those losses.

“We’ve got Brad Watson, we’ve got (Josh) Okonye, Thomas Dillon, Jaylen Latter and John Armstrong, and they learned like I leaned,” he said. “Hopefully they can fill those shoes well. We have a great group, and Bud and K.J. set the bar high, but they’re going to try their best, and they have a great attitude.

“We saw what happened last year and saw what we needed to

do to get better, and this spring everybody got their feet wet.

Coach Clawson said those two scrimmages we had were the two best he’s had since he has been here. He has been preaching physicality during practice. Even in the weight room. That has made a big difference as we’ve been able to hit our numbers and seeing that let us know we’re a better team.”

Chubb said the Deacons are doing everything they can to be a better football team come fall.

“We want to win just as bad as Coach Clawson does,” he said.

“Today, it didn’t feel like another practice. It felt like another game, and it was fun and a good way to end our spring. Coach (Kevin) Higgins made a remark saying that this was the practice we would remember until August, so go out there and give it all you’ve got, and that’s what we tried to do.”

Wake Forest opens the 2015 season Sept. 3 against Elon, and will play host to Indiana, Florida State, N.C. State, Louisville and Duke at BB&T Field this fall.

I’m writing this version of my now and again column with one eye on my laptop and the other on my television screen.

I mean, it’s Sunday at the Masters…what else can I do? And as an aside to my main topic, I sure wish I were watching Bill Haas and Webb Simpson heading to Amen Corner battling for a first green jacket. It was like that on Thursday. But Thursday is not Sunday at Augusta. Not even close.

But since both former Deacon greats will have to wait at least another year to enhance their wardrobe, I’ll move to something else – football. This is the last time I’ll write about Dave Clawson’s Deacons until late summer when the numbers swell just a bit from an incoming freshman class before fall 2015 arrives, Clawson’s second as head coach.

Yesterday Tommy Elrod and I had the pleasure of calling the Deacs’ end of spring practice Black and White game on ESPN3. We also had the luxury of working from the network television booth which, on the seventh floor, is a level higher than our network radio booth and perched right on the 50yard line instead of our radio home on about the 20-yard line or so.

Our radio booth is a good seat. The television booth is a great seat. And what I heard from Tommy, on more than one occasion, and what I saw on our HD video monitor matched.

“Teachable moment,” is what Tommy kept saying. And that’s exactly what Dave Clawson did time after time following the end of a play – take the opportunity to talk to his players about what he just saw. To suggest. To correct.

To coach.

Clawson could have taken the day off…coasted and let his assistants do all of the work. We would have loved having him in the booth, goodness knows we needed help trying to herd all of the cats, keep track of players playing for both sides. And those redshirt freshmen. I think there were 100 of those!

But Clawson stayed close to the action. On the field just behind the offense taking the opportunity between plays to coach his team, giving immediate instruction to and getting flash reaction from those who will don the Old Gold and Black in four and half months when Elon comes calling in early September.

It’ll be another young team. Very young. The senior class will have but six members, the smallest since World War II. That’s a long time. That’s pre-Bill Faircloth.

But Clawson says that even though his second team will be younger than the first, it will be more talented. We got a glimpse of some of the youngest in true freshmen Kendall Hinton and Tabari Hines, both of whom enrolled in January and are getting invaluable time with the big boys. Hinton is a quarterback from Durham Southern who is used to winning.

He has good mobility and has the ability to hurt defenses with his quickness and escapability. His arm is sneaky strong, and he’ll help supply the competition for incumbent starter John Wolford.

Hines is from Florence, S.C., a speedy wide receiver recruited to pad the stable and give Wolford some choices.

He was back on punt returns in the Spring Game, proving his versatility and validating what Clawson and his staff saw in him in high school where he scored 46 touchdowns – 15 of which came via kick returns, interception returns or fumble returns. He’s an athlete. And he is welcome.

And not only did we get peeks from high above of young talent, we also saw some of the old heads doing their thing.

Junior safety Ryan Janvion was all over the lot. With Kevin Johnson and Bud Noel graduated, Janvion will be the

secondary’s leader. He led Wake a season ago with 115 tackles and has 210 for his career – on pace for 400 which would join him with just four others in Deacon history, a group including former consensus All-America Bill Armstrong.

Junior Steve Donatell will add depth at tight end, but his best play in the Spring Game may just have been running down speedster John Armstrong on a kick return and completely enveloping his smaller teammate from behind with a Batman like swoop and spread eagle of a tackle. Impressive. Jared Crump will catch a lot balls again for the Deacs. He did so yesterday, a tall target who gets open and is easy for Wolford to see. Cam Serigne caught more passes as a freshman than any Deacon tight end ever in one season. He could be a Hall of Famer in due time. He was held out some this spring but played yesterday and, even though not a true “old head,” the third-year sophomore from Ashburn, Va., plays like one. And then there’s Wolford, a veteran not in years yet but in plays made and hits taken. He just keeps getting up and moving on. To say this is his team might be a stretch, but Wolford has earned the respect of his teammates. And he will fight you.

And finally the kicking game should be solid. Alex Kinal drilled his first punt nearly 60 yards and will, again, be a weapon. And kicker Mike Weaver drilled three field goals before slightly pulling a fourth. His first season kicking was a record setting one. Fine there.

So bring on autumn. From where I sit, the football Deacons are trending positively. And Jordan Spieth wears about a 40 regular.

oah Rubin is used to high-pressure situations. He has won junior Grand Slam championships and national titles, and has taken some of the best the ACC has to offer as a freshman on the men’s tennis team.

But when he took to the court on April 6, Rubin admits he was a nervous wreck. His opponent that day was formidable, world-class‌ranked even higher than Rubin in some circles.

He was about to play against the president of the United States.

The event on the White House lawn was part of the annual Easter Egg Roll, which included thousands of schoolchildren and celebrity guests (including WFU basketball legend Muggsy Bogues). Rubin, a former U.S. Tennis Association Boys national champion, was invited as a guest of the USTA, along with several other rising stars in the sport. They mostly played around and offered tips to the children at the event, but when the president stopped by, an impromptu match broke out.

“It was me and one kid against him and another kid,” Rubin said. “We just hit it a few times. It was nice and a little bit surreal.”

In terms of high-profile opponents, Rubin ranks Obama up there with Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked player, with whom he played an exhibition last spring.

Asked about which match made him more nervous, Rubin said, “That’s a tough choice. I’d say I was more nervous to meet the president but less nervous to play with him than I was with Djokovic.”

Rubin rarely shows nerves in matches for the Deacons, but he has found plenty of success here in a very short time. Playing almost exclusively at No. 1 singles, he had compiled a 12-3 singles record with just a couple of weeks left in the regular season, plus 9-4 in doubles (typically with Jon Ho).

The stellar play has persisted throughout the Deacons’ lineup this season – they moved into the nation’s top 15 in mid-March and are poised to make some noise in the ACC against eighttime defending champion Virginia.

“We’re improving by the day,” Rubin said.

“We’re individually getting better as time goes on, and when the moment is right, we’ll peak.

UVa has done this a lot, but we have every opportunity to have success there. I don’t see why we can’t win the ACC, then the NCAA title.”

Rubin’s love for the sport goes back longer than he can remember – he said there are pictures of him holding a racket in his crib in Rockville Centre, N.Y. His father played junior tennis and set Noah on the same track early on.

He played in his first tournament at 6 years old.

“I always loved it,” Rubin said. “It was a family thing, my parents, my sister and me. Then when I went to tournaments and was successful, I enjoyed that – as a competitive kid, I loved winning.”

Rubin said his two great sports loves have always been tennis and soccer. He excelled in both as a youth, but he said when he was 12 he realized he needed to choose one or the other to concentrate on. By that time, he was already winning international tennis events in his age group, so he chose to keep his racket – though it’s obvious from the number of soccer highlights on his Twitter page that he still loves that sport as well.

“I was athletic as a kid, and I played all the sports,” Rubin said. “It’s still nice to go out and scrimmage [in soccer] once in a while.”

It’s hard to oversell the resume Rubin compiled in junior tennis. He reached No. 6 in the world International Tennis Federation rankings, with countless wins at world-class tournaments throughout his pre-teen and early teenage years.

He trains at the prestigious McEnroe Tennis Academy in Manhattan and has earned public praise from McEnroe himself.

Last summer, Rubin emerged seemingly all at once out of the “great junior player” category and became a can’t-miss future star. He played in the French Open juniors and lost in the second round but then qualified for Wimbledon’s junior draw and steamrolled the field on the way to the championship, the first by an American in seven years.

The next month in Kalamazoo, Mich., Rubin hoisted another trophy, winning the USTA Boys 18s national championship in singles and doubles (with Stefan Kozlov). He was the first male to win both Wimbledon and the USTA 18s since 1977, some 19 years before Rubin was born.

The victory in Kalamazoo got him an entry into the main men’s draw at the U.S. Open, not far from Rubin’s home. He dropped a three-set match in the opening round of that event but termed the whole experience a dream come true and one he hopes to repeat.

“There are so many things I’ve been honored and blessed to be a part of,” Rubin said, “because of how hard my group has worked and I have worked.”

But Rubin isn’t in a big hurry to become “the future.” He’s focused on the present, and that includes enjoying his freshman year and helping the Deacons excel. He’s had to make some major adjustments in his studies – he got his highschool diploma from Laurel Springs School, a distance-learning center, so when he first got to Winston-Salem, he hadn’t taken an academic course in person in three years.

“It’s been tough getting used to the classroom,” Rubin said. “It’s almost a new experience raising my hand to answer a question. But everyone has been really welcoming, and I’ve made lots of great friends.”

Rubin said one of his favorite things about college tennis has been the camaraderie of his teammates. It’s that chemistry that figures to carry the Deacons far into the postseason.

“I’ve played some soccer, and I played junior Davis Cup a couple of times, but really I’ve only had a limited time playing where more than one person mattered,” Rubin said. “It’s a different kind of pressure, and it’s a really good pressure. It’s been a great motivation – we all have one goal, and we’re showing a great passion for it.”

It’s About The Journey

ACC high-jump champ relishes the obstacles she has overcome

N

yki Caldwell will always revel in her ACC indoor high-jump championship. But even now, what makes her appreciate the title is remembering what got her to that point.

Caldwell, a senior from Dexter, Mich., cleared the bar at 5-foot-10 in Blacksburg, Va., Feb. 27 to win gold – the first Deacons’ woman ever to win an ACC indoor field event.

When she came to Wake Forest, she admits, she pictured this moment happening sooner. So is this a case of “good things come to those who wait?” No. For Caldwell, this is “good things come to those who work, and practice, and study, and grow.”

A silver medal in the same event as a sophomore, clearing 5-10, gave Caldwell an early taste of success. It let her know what she was capable of, and she wanted more – immediately. Things didn’t work out the way she

planned, and her junior year was a disappointment. That’s what made this senior championship that much more special.

“When you imagine your career, you picture everything on an ascending line,” Caldwell said. “But there are struggles and setbacks – it wasn’t a straight line for me. I figured, sophomore silver, the next year gold. Clear 5-11 as a junior, 6 feet as a senior, win two ACCs and go from there. But these things take time. If you keep working for it, it can come together.”

Vertical-jumps coach Tim Sullivan joined the Wake Forest staff after Caldwell’s freshman year and immediately saw that Caldwell had the drive to succeed; she just needed to focus.

“When we set out on her journey, she set her goals really high,” Sullivan said. “She had a desire for things to be different. Even when she was down after her junior year, experience made her the person who believed she

would turn it around. For her to be a conference champ is fantastic.”

Caldwell is the daughter of two college biology professors, so academics was a big focus in her household. Her childhood dream had nothing to do with sports – she wanted to work in the medical field. Sports provided a way to pass the time – and also to learn some lessons.

“Basketball raised me since I was 5,” Caldwell said. “It taught me hard work and determination.

It also gave me courage to join the track team in eighth grade. At one of my first meets, a coach said, ‘You’re relatively tall. You’re going to start high jump.’ They showed me the basics, I tried it, and I was apparently good at it. Now I fall more in love with it every day.”

Still, school always came first – and that wasn’t just a parental edict, it was a personal philosophy.

She said she was first attracted to Wake Forest by the “academic rigor.”

She was a member of the National Honor Society at Dexter High and was also first-chair viola in the school’s Concert Orchestra, and she wasn’t sure for a long time whether she wanted to play sports in college.

“High jump wasn’t my life; it was just a love that never died out,” Caldwell said. “I came on my [recruiting] visits because I wanted to see some schools. It wasn’t until I came to Wake [on my visit] that I said, I think I can do it all. I had a scholarship, but I told my parents, if the athletic side doesn’t work out, I reserve the right to say I don’t want to do it anymore.”

Despite feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of being a freshman student-athlete, she never gave up.

“I came in to do everything,” Caldwell said. “Be in the orchestra, be in clubs, do all of these things while maintaining my academics and having a social life. I learned quickly, the hard way, that I can’t do everything. What are my priorities? I am a student-athlete – ‘s’ first, ‘a’ second. No matter what, I have to have time for those first two.”

As far as her studies go, she came in with dreams of getting on a pre-med track, going to medical school and becoming a doctor. Then came sophomore chemistry.

“That’s what turned my interest in med school off immediately,” Caldwell said. “My family has a background in biology, and my dad always told me how hard chem would be, but I’d walk past the building and have a physiological reaction. I knew I had to find out what was best for me.”

Around the same time as her chemistry revelation, she became interested in psychology and decided to take more classes in that field as well.

So now, with a health and exercise science major and a psychology minor pending, she’s reviewing her options and preparing for what she calls “the next phase.”

But she knows she still has some work to do before that happens – specifically, the pinnacle of the outdoor-track season.

That ascending line she talked about? It hasn’t stopped just because she won gold.

One thing I’m looking forward to after I graduate is pleasure reading; I can honestly say I haven’t done enough of that lately.”

“The ACC turned out in an ideal way,” Caldwell said. “I won the gold at 5-10, which I had cleared before multiple times, but I’ve never gone above 5-10 ½ on the [competition] day. At some point, I need to break the wall and get over that. So that’s what we’re aiming for now. It’s progressing.”

#BringItBack Is All About The Great Memories In an instant, I was back there.

I was in my seat in the corner of the Greensboro Coliseum, sitting with some of my best friends from school, watching Randolph Childress drive the lane, pull up and knock down The Shot that will stay in our memories forever.

I was in the stands at Kentner celebrating our third consecutive field hockey national championship in 2004. I was sitting behind the goal in Cary, watching Zack Schilawski’s one-timer bounce into the lower right corner of the goal to secure our first men’s soccer national championship in 2007.

And I was cheering in disbelief, with my phone ringing non-stop, hugging strangers in the stands in Jacksonville as I watched a barrage of oranges parade onto the field after we won the football ACC Championship in 2006.

As Randolph Childress, Lauren Crandall, Zack Schilawski and Riley Skinner returned to campus over the past few weeks to reminisce about their time as student-athletes, I couldn’t help but be taken back to some of these great memories I have had as a Wake Forest supporter with my friends and family.

That is what the Deacon Club’s #BringItBack email and video campaign is all about.

Childress, Crandall, Schilawski and Skinner each independently shared something else that tugged at me as well. They each spoke passionately about the life-changing impact that Wake Forest had on their lives. They spoke of lives permanently changed, friendships permanently forged and memories never to be forgotten.

I walked away energized and excited. This is what we, as Deacon Club members, get to do. We have the opportunity to transform lives. We don’t only provide scholarships; we provide a life-altering experience.

These former student-athletes reminded me of the power of athletics. Their dedication and commitment to provide future generations of student-athletes with the same experiences and success that they had received is simply inspiring.

They each expressed their own desire to give in an effort to help a new class of student-athletes create their own sets of memories.

This campaign asks that we all work to relive our memories by providing our future student-athletes with the resources to receive their own life-altering experiences at Wake Forest. So I ask that next time you receive that #BringItBack email, you truly forward it on to a friend and help re-live the fun as we create these new memories together.

David Porcelli forges bond with WFU through his daughter becoming a student

B

efore David Porcelli (P ’17) and his daughter, Jessica (’17), did a tour of colleges in the South during her junior year of high school, he had heard of Wake Forest and its strong academic reputation but had no prior connection to the University. That quickly changed, however, shortly after he and his daughter set foot on campus.

“Wake Forest immediately became her first choice,” David said. “Touring the campus, meeting some of the students, and doing some homework on the student body… there was little question after our visit.”

Once Jessica was accepted, David and his wife, Kathy, also quickly became enamored with the University as they met other parents of incoming students and built new connections within the Wake Forest community.

“What we found with Wake Forest specifically is that there is an incredible amount of loyalty to the school,” David said.

“We really love the sense of community and hearing about multi-generational graduates, whether it was someone’s parents or grandparents who attended Wake Forest; we hear that a lot. We also really like that people make an effort to go back and continue to be a part of a strong alumni base after they graduate.”

As a part of becoming more involved with the University and the new community they had quickly become so fond of, David and Kathy decided to join the Deacon Club, contributing to the Annual Fund with a multi-year commitment. The Porcellis have also supported the University through donations to the School of Business and the basketball practice gym project.

“We wanted to make a commitment to Wake Forest both athletically and academically,” David said. “We’ve had such a wonderful experience with the school, the faculty and the parents of the students we’ve met; it really could not have been better, and so

we felt it was important to contribute to the Wake Will initiative.”

program, and I look forward to seeing the team progress in the future.”

The basketball practice gym was of special interest to David, particularly in light of the momentum created by head coach Danny Manning.

Although the Porcellis don’t have the opportunity to travel to campus as frequently as they would like to from their home in New Jersey, David said they continue to feel connected to the University through their support of the Wake Will campaign. When they do have a chance to visit, he noted that being a part of the Deacon Club has definitely improved the game-day experience for him and his family.

“The basketball practice gym is a critical project for our men’s basketball team, both from a recruiting perspective and to help train our current student-athletes,” David said. “Coach Manning and his staff have already made a positive impact on our

campus visit, the Porcellis have fully embraced Wake Forest through their support of the Wake Will campaign and hope that their daughter, Jessica, will continue their legacy after she graduates next May. “We decided to make a multiyear commitment to the Annual Fund to ensure we were giving for the duration of Jessica’s time as a student,” David said.

“We knew that we were going to be on campus a few times each year and wanted to show our support while she was on campus. At some point, I believe Jessica will take over our commitment. She’s very committed to the school and excited about the direction moving forward.”

“We’ve had the chance to come to campus for a few football and basketball games,” David said. “We very much enjoy the whole college scene and think Wake Forest really does it right.

Joining the Deacon Club really enhanced our experience. The development team has been incredibly accommodating, and when I do have the chance to

come down to games, I know they are just a phone call away to help us secure tickets and make sure we have a great experience.”

Although David may not have known much about the University beyond its wellregarded academic and athletic reputation during that first

“College athletics is one of the things that drives a university community forward, David said.

Elizabeth Proctor Darst (’04), a women’s tennis student-athlete for the Demon Deacons, donned the Old Gold and Black for the first time in 2000 and immediately jumped into the starting lineup, earning All-ACC status by the end of her career. During her time at Wake Forest, she went to three NCAA Tournaments, which included a run to the quarterfinals in 2002. Elizabeth currently resides in New York with her husband, David, and daughter, Harrison.

Elizabeth Proctor When did you graduate from Wake Forest?

I graduated in May 2004.

What was your major and/or minor?

My major was Communication.

What does being a Demon Deacon mean to you?

Being a Demon Deacon means having a good work ethic, caring deeply about the team and honing one’s own skills as both an athlete and scholar.

Why are you still involved in Wake Forest Athletics?

I believe in the Athletic Department and hope to see the Wake Forest tradition continue for future generations. I try to give back so that others can have the same opportunity that was given to me.

What is your current occupation?

I just recently had a baby girl, Harrison, so I am currently working part time as an advertising executive for Four Seasons Magazine and experiencing the joys of being a mother. Since graduating from Wake Forest and before having a child, I was an account executive at The Tennis Channel and more recently at TV Guide Network selling advertising.

What is your favorite memory of your time at Wake Forest?

My favorite memory is the year that the tennis team was ranked No. 2 in the nation, we were runners-up at the ACC Tournament, and we finished in the top 8 at NCAA’s at Stanford. Each person won matches at critical times that allowed us as a team to have these successes.

What makes you most proud of Wake Forest?

Wake Forest is such a competitive university in both academics and athletics. For being a small school in a big athletic conference, every sports team has an impressive record and most importantly, our athletes do very well academically. It was always so nice to see how many athletes made the dean’s list each semester. I am proud to be able to say that I went to a top 25 University where the athletes cared as much about their academics as they did their sport.

When you come back to Wake Forest, you always…

I visit the tennis team and try to go to a basketball or football game.

I was there when…

Why do you feel it is important to give back to the University?

As a student-athlete, the University gave so much to me, and I will be forever grateful. I had the opportunity to play tennis for four years, get an outstanding education and meet lifelong friends. I feel like I owe so much to the University for giving me those opportunities.

My favorite coach is Janet Bergman.

She was a former teammate and then our assistant coach. She could easily relate to us as a team since she had

Deacons Giving Back Members of the men’s basketball team participated in the 7th Annual Lillie’s Friends “Got Friends?” 5K Run/ Walk downtown Winston Salem on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Lillie’s Friends provides families with real hope by raising neuroblastoma awareness, funding innovative research toward a cure and supporting families experiencing the ‘crisis of belief’ that accompanies their child’s neuroblastoma diagnosis. Lillie’s Friends strives to be a positive impact and source of hope for families fighting cancer.

Members of the men’s tennis team took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer with H.O.P.E (Help Our People Eat), providing healthy meals for children and encouraging healthy eating habits.

Benefits Subsequent to Graduation

With graduation just around the corner, it’s probably a good idea to think about what (if any) NCAA rules still pertain to former student-athletes. For example, is it permissible to buy a graduation gift for a senior student-athlete? We all know that benefits to current student-athletes are not permissible; however, one might assume that once a student-athlete graduates, all NCAA rules are lifted. In reality, however, the NCAA does still place certain restrictions on the types of benefits these individuals can receive.

NCAA rules permit donors and other institutional representatives to provide gifts and benefits of nominal value to studentathletes on an occasional basis following graduation. Such benefits would include things such as meals, transportation or

overnight lodging. So to answer the question about the graduation gift, yes, it would be permissible to provide a graduating studentathlete with a gift; however, the value should not exceed $50, which is the NCAA’s general definition of “nominal value”.

The one condition to this exception, however, is that such benefits are only permissible if Wake Forest is not currently recruiting a relative of the former student-athlete.

Therefore, prior to providing a benefit to a former student-athlete, it is extremely important that you check with the Athletics Compliance Office beforehand.
