Featherston artist goes WOW From moulding sculptures to fashion design, a Featherston artist, and her equally talented team, are about to wow many new fans on an international scale. JOHN LAZO-RON reports.

The designers for this year’s World of WearableArt [WOW] Awards Show have been announced, and one design team from Featherston will be under the spotlight this year.

Taralee Freeman [Featherston], Marie Wright and Zach McDonald-Wright [both Wellington] will join 18 other finalists from the Wellington region in the capital this year, showcasing one of their creative designs in Aotearoa’s most spectacular theatrical stage production.

Freeman, who has lived in Featherston for 20 years, will be going up against 108 other designers in this year’s event, some of whom have previously made items for celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

Despite the intense competition, she said she was excited and humbled to be in the mix and display what her team had created.

“I think I can speak for the three of us that it is an absolute honour to be able to represent the Wairarapa, but also the Greater

Marie Wright, Zach McDonald-Wright and Taralee Freeman have been announced as ÿ nalists for WOW 2021.

Wellington region in such a prestigious event,” she said.

“There are some designers who are right up there, really huge. Some with their own line. So we are really humbled to realise that there are three little people who quietly work away and managed to get there as well.

“I’m just really quite thankful that I work with such a fantastic team, and we work together well. We allow our work to shine, and it all comes together

beautifully. It is an absolute honour, and we will aim for the stars.”

It won’t be the first time the trio have been a finalist in WOW, with previous finals outings in 2017 and 2019. However, Freeman will lead the team for the first time this year. Marie and Zach led their previous entries.

Ratepayers group plan ahead Marcus Anselm

Two Masterton ratepayers are looking to fill a gap and launch a district-wide residents and ratepayers group.

Lyn Riley and Derek Pickup have set up a meeting last week to canvass opinion on their passion to start a Masterton Ratepayers and Residents Association.

The pair said the absence of such a body in the area was apparent during the recent long term planning process and subsequent debate on the proposed civic centre.

Riley, a Wairarapa College alumnus, returned to the district to retire near family.

“We came back here to retire because we love the town, and we have family

here. We don’t like what we see in the township. It looks very tired.”

She said she also had concerns over the council’s transparency.

“You can’t trust them because they’re not transparent. You have to assume they’re hiding

something. That’s what’s got us going.”

She said the issues motivated her family to join an association.

Riversdale Beach and Castlepoint each had groups, but no group represented the entire district.

“We thought that was bizarre for a town the size of Masterton.”

Riley said she and Pickup connected online, because they shared “some commonalities about the issues and concerns going on here”.

Pickup, who moved to Masterton in 2017, said the idea to forge ahead had come from online conversations after debate on Masterton District Council’s 10-year-plan.

He said the group was in its infancy but was “very keen to move forward” and “try and get some sort of medium for us to consult with the council again.

“We want to represent the residents and ratepayers in the area to make sure that our voice is heard.

“I strongly believe there’s a need for that voice to be taken forward.”

MDC is due to publish its long-term plan and latest rates updates this month.

Artist and friends aim to WOW the crowds Continued from page 1 Asked about what they were entering, Freeman was keeping tight-lipped because she couldn’t discuss what her team had designed for WOW as it had not yet been displayed.

She did, however, mention the garments and the inspiration behind it, with builders paper, tissue, vintage paper, fabric, leather, custom jewellery, paint, metal and an EVA phone all being used in the design.

“The inspiration behind this year’s piece is remembering the past,” she said.

“By doing so, we carry a little essence of that into our future, and that reminds us where we

came from and how we got there.

“It’s literally mixedmedia at its best.”

Although it seems like Freeman is now a seasoned campaigner with WOW, her walk into the prestigious event all came by chance.

Before 2017, she was solely an artist. While displaying some of her work at an exhibition, Marie approached her about teaming up for WOW, which she initially thought was way out of her league.

However, she realised there “weren’t too many big differences”, so took it on board and hasn’t looked back.

“I honestly didn’t think it was something I would

be able to do,” she said.

“I thought, oh gosh, but it turned out that working with fabric was no different than sculpting. It was just another crossover, and it ended up blossoming into something quite beautiful.”

Since then, Freeman said fashion design had opened many doors for her, including entering items at the Eco Fashion Awards.

She said the trio were now looking forward to being wowed by their own item for the third time, as she said it would “all come to life” when it hits the big stage.

“When we design and create, we allow the piece to guide us, and once it does, that’s where the

magic happens. But it’s not until it actually goes on stage, where it comes to life through the models and choreography.

“They take what we created and make it better.”

Freeman said she has

ambitions to teach and inspire aspiring artists and designers in Wairarapa about the trade and let them know they can make it onto the big scale.

“I want to teach young people who may have a little idea and fan that

little spark and make it grow and let them know it is actually possible, especially in Wairarapa.”

WOW will run from September 30 to October 17, with an audience of more than 60,000 people expected to attend.

A nurse’s daily battle UNSUNG HEROES OF EMERGENCY

It’s been said a nurse is like a soldier, always on the frontline fighting to help people’s lives.

JOHN LAZO-RON reports.

In the unparalleled and extraordinary public health emergency in which we find ourselves today, across New Zealand and the world, one you’ll always find first on the frontline battle against rising health challenges is a nurse.

Nurses are staffing our clinics and hospital wards, and in most regions like Wairarapa, they are doing so until they drop.

One nurse who has been on that frontline in this region is Lucy McLaren.

McLaren has now been a Nurse Practitioner for 33 years, after first training for the role in 1988.

With McLaren’s dad being a doctor and mum being a nurse, you would think she was simply following in her family’s footsteps, but she said it wasn’t a conscious decision, something she ended up doing.

The 51-year-old has now been on Wairarapa Hospital’s Emergency Department team for seven years, responding to dire and unprecedented health crises such as covid-19.

Asked by Midweek if she thought nurses were like soldiers at times, fighting chaotic battles, she said there were chaotic times nurses had to deal with, but that they also had the ability to bring a peaceful presence to any situation.

“This place [hospital] can get so busy and chaotic, but we are nurses, and there is a calm we bring to most situations,” she said.

“One of our biggest roles is helping people navigate this system and get better, or a plan to get better.”

“There are some patient situations which will sit with me forever, and they make up who I am as a nurse and how I approach the next situation. It is constant learning and recognition of patterns or illnesses, and not knowing what is happening to the patient and trying to come up with the answer that can be really difficult. But as we work as a team, there is always someone to discuss situations with.”

Although McLaren said she loved being a nurse, the profession had taken its toll on her in different ways over the years.

“Sometimes, the shift work can be tough,” she said.

“Missing family stuff like birthdays, social gatherings, kids sport, is a constant. My kids are really used to me working evenings and weekends and not being there. My husband picks up a huge amount.

“Being awake all night and then trying to sleep during the day can be really hard and takes its toll physically.”

In the wake of the recent nurse’s strikes, McLaren said she believed the work of a nurse could get taken for granted, but mainly because of people’s lack of knowledge about the role.

“Mostly, people don’t understand the role of the nurse and how much we are involved in most parts of a person’s journey through the health system,” she said.

“In ED, the place can look calm but is really busy.

frustrated thinking we are not doing more. But mostly, that is because people don’t understand and are scared for themselves.”

Despite the chaos, McLaren loved being right there.

“I love being in the middle of a chaotic day and working with the rest of the team to get through it, or seeing a patient leave with a smile and knowing they will get better,” she said.

“I love working as part of a great team, the quiet times with patients where you make a real connection with them as people.”

McLaren said many had helped her along her journey as a nurse, teaching her valuables lessons that she had brought on in her role.

“My preceptor at my first GP job in Wellington, Wendy, taught me to always put the person first no matter who they are,” she said.

“My Director of Nursing, Helen, helped me to understand Maori disparities in health and how I can help. I thank all my team for sharing their knowledge with me, the wealth of knowledge here in ED is exceptional.”

All she wants to do now is learn more and more and see nursing reach its very best.

“It has so much more to give and need to realise its full potential. The nurse practitioner role is a great example of nursing adapting and helping the health system to deliver.”

Former Greytown councillor Mike Gray has been elected unopposed to the Featherston Community Board.

Gray’s was the only nomination received by South Wairarapa District Council by Thursday’s deadline.

South Wairarapa electoral officer Warwick Lampp confirmed the appointment.

The Greytown resident served seven terms as a Greytown ward councillor and was appointed again in 2019.

He will fill the position vacated by Sophronia Mete-Smith last month.

Local election rules say candidates do not need to live in the ward but did need to be nominated by two locals.

Gray had backing from two Featherston residents.

The towns, 13km apart, are two of the three wards in the South Wairarapa district. Martinborough is the third.

Each ward has a fourperson community board.

Neither Greytown nor Featherston filled its complement in the 2019 elections.

Gray would be the second

member of the newlyformed Citizens Voice group to sit on the board.

Another member, Claire Bleakley, is already deputy chair.

Gray said the group formed to “encourage participation in renewing the principles citizenship and democracy” and ensuring engagement in “backyard” issues was contemplated during massive upheaval for local government.

“To me, this is about communities,” he said.

“If we’re not looking after our communities, keeping their current strength and then increasing it, all the changes that are going on will dilute them.

“I want to see the people start doing some serious thinking about their backyard. That’s why we’re called Citizens Voice.”

Mete Smith defeated Jayson Tahinurua in an election in February 2020, the only recent vote.

Gray’s appointment is the third in as many years that appointments were needed to fill a position.

There was no vote needed for the 2019 local elections. Bleakley, chair Mark Shepherd, and Indigo Freya were appointed.

Last year, Tahinurua was appointed under special conditions forced by lockdown.

Gray is likely to be sworn in at the next board meeting, on August 10.

Mark, also the former minister for veterans and NZ First MP, would take over from former Masterton mayor Bob Francis. He envisioned the festival becoming New Zealand’s premier aviation event.

“Without Bob’s dedication and guidance, I doubt very much if the event would have survived a full weather cancellation in 2017, a partial one in 2019, and then a covidaffected event in 2021,” Mark said.

“It’s an honour to have the opportunity to drive Wings into the future and take advantage of the current national and international opportunities.”

Retiring chair Francis formed the Wings Over Wairarapa Community Trust in 2011.

spent the past few weeks looking at what could be done to grow the event, Mark said.

“The success of the STEM Aviation and Education Programme has shown what we can do if we diversify, and there is scope to extend and develop this for the future to showcase what the aviation sector offers in the way of exports, careers, and workforce opportunities.

“Having worked myself as a Wings over Wairarapa volunteer for many years, I also understand the significant contribution our region’s volunteers make to this event and their importance to its future. The future is hugely exciting, and we

have a very experienced board of trustees and management team.”

Mark was also excited to work with Masterton District Council to understand its strategic vision for the event.

The trust was proud to have run a “highly successful” event earlier this year, despite the uncertainty brought by covid-19.

About 5000 children, teachers, and parents had attended the school STEM programme, and thousands had packed Hood Aerodrome to see the USA’s B52 and the Australian C130J, in particular.

The next Wings Over Wairarapa air festival will be held from February 24-26, 2023.

“The event is a superb chance to celebrate the innovation, creativity and sheer hard work taking place here in Wairarapa, and it has proved to be a fabulous platform for highlighting key contributors to our growing economy.”

There are five categories open to nominations from the public: Innovation, Vibrant, Emerging, Team and Service.

Finalists will be selected by a panel of independent judges overseen by an independent convenor who lives outside the Wairarapa region.

The finalists will be

announced during a Finalists Reveal evening on Monday, August 30.

Other awards include two tributes selected by the Business Wairarapa Board for people who have personally contributed to business excellence in Wairarapa, and an award for the most Youth-friendly business selected by Wairarapa’s Youth-2-Work team.

One of Wairarapa’s up and coming swimmers has shown her full potential after cleaning up at the 2021 Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay [HBPB] regional short-course swimming championships.

Scarlett Wadham collected nine visitor gold medals and one visitor silver at the three-day event at Flaxmere Water World in Hastings.

Visitor medals were given to gold, silver or bronze winners from outside the Hawke’s Bay region.

Her nine wins included nine personal best times for the 10-year-old.

A product of Carterton Swimming Club, Scarlett came out on top in the 50metre, 100m, and 200m freestyle; 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke; 200m breaststroke; and the 100m individual medley.

Her sole silver was in the 50metre fly.

The wins were a huge relief for Scarlett, after the disappointment of missing out on competing at the Wellington short-course champs for the second year in a row.

After the Wellington region went into Level-2 lockdown in June, the Wellington 2021 short-

course champs were postponed and cancelled for under-12 competitors, due to the Wellington Regional Aquatics Centre being closed for three months of maintenance.

The over-12-yearolds were moved to Coastlands Aquatic Centre in Paraparaumu, but the facility isn’t big enough to host a full event, so the younger ones paid the price.

Subsequently, the Carterton Swimming Club and a few other Wellington and Palmerston North swimming clubs reached out to the Hawke’s BayPoverty champs to give their kids a chance to put all their hard work into action.

“I was really disappointed and sad that I couldn’t swim in Wellington because it was the second time that it happened and because I trained hard for the competition,” the Hadlow School student said.

“But I was happy I was able to go to these champs [HBPB] and do well.”

Scarlett’s mum Deanna said she was very proud of her daughter’s achievements in the Hawke’s Bay and that the

wins were a testament to the hard work she puts in on a weekly basis.

“I’m very delighted with Scarlett and seeing what she’s been able to achieve in swimming so far,” she said.

“It was a fabulous event put on by swimming HBPB, and there were

some great competitors from Gisborne all the way down to Wellington, so to see Scarlett do so well was fantastic.

“Scarlett puts in a lot of effort, training four to five nights a week, and now she is reaping the rewards of all the training that she does.”

A competitive swimmer for three years, Scarlett has never looked back, regularly exceeding in her age group category.

With the Olympics now underway in Tokyo, Scarlett said she has ambitions to take her swimming to the elite level with the hope of wearing the Olympic silver fern one day, just like her swimming idol Sophie Pascoe.

Pascoe, a para swimmer, has represented New Zealand at three Summer Paralympic Games from 2008, winning nine gold medals and six silver

medals, making her New Zealand’s most successful Paralympian.

Scarlett hopes to emulate Pascoe’s achievements.

“Sophie Pascoe is my favourite swimmer. She has been a big inspiration to me because of what she’s been able to do in swimming. I would love to do what she’s done for New Zealand one day.”

The road from past to future John Lazo-Ron

Most people think electric vehicles are a product of modern-day technology.

Still, many won’t realise that electric vehicles had an earlier heyday in New Zealand just after World War I. Among the innovators and entrepreneurs exploring new technology in the early 1900s was Ambrose Reeves Harris.

He was an electrical engineer based in Christchurch who worked for a time with famous American inventor Thomas Edison, and helped to popularise battery propulsion on New Zealand roads.

From 1918, working with the Christchurch City Council, he imported more than 200 electric trucks, omnibuses and cars from Chicago in The United States to Christchurch, using Edison cell alkaline batteries. They were primarily used as delivery vehicles, and were charged up overnight at a charging station at the city’s Municipal Electricity Department garage.

The popularity of electric vehicles grew as the advantages were embraced. No gears to worry about, no clutch, no smoke, less noise and no

cranking, and they were cheaper to operate than a petrol engine.

As time marched on, so did the discovery of more fossil fuels, and eventually, the petrol engine overtook the electric in popularity.

Carterton author and illustrator Viv Walker was intrigued by this story after finding out Ambrose was a not-too-distant relative.

She has since taken up the task of telling his story in a detailed, colourful way

for children, in a book she has titled ‘The Road to the Future’.

“My mother piqued my interest with a passing comment about a past relative who brought in electric cars to New Zealand over 100 years ago,” she said.

“In light of such a topical theme, I felt inspired to delve further. I reached out to the direct descendants of Ambrose, who generously

provided me with a cornucopia of clippings, letters and photos to help me develop the story idea, with a lovely side-effect of finding new family connections.”

Walker said her historical fiction story about an electric pioneer and his magnificent battery cars features a little red halfton electric truck called a ‘Walker’ that takes on a race with Paddy, a petrol engine truck, to deliver

With many detailed and colourful illustrations set both in Wellington and Christchurch, Walker combines some actual events laid over a framework similar to Aesop’s fable, The Tortoise and the Hare.

The book, which she will launch this Saturday, is suitable for 6 to 12-yearolds and includes facts pages and a QR code that takes children to

up-to-date information on electric vehicles on Waikato University’s science hub website.

“I hope children will be both entertained and educated by this story,” she said.

“I wanted to celebrate and highlight not only a standout innovative New Zealander but also the way we, as a country, embrace and adopt new trends even at such an early time in our history.”

She now hopes her book will educate about Aotearoa’s transport future.

“Again, we are charging towards another ‘Electrical Vehicle’ future but where modern transport needs are driven by the prevailing influence of global climate issues, and I hope my book fuels further learning about our transport future.”

Walker’s book launch will take place at No23 art gallery, Holloway St in Carterton, on Saturday, at 3pm. Also attending and on show will be a modern electric car and a pre-1920’s vintage petrol engine car, courtesy of the Wairarapa Vintage Car Club.

It will be open to the public, and signed copies will be available for sale.

Why plant now?

When deciduous trees shed their leaves and go into hibernation each winter it creates the perfect planting conditions. Transplanting is less stressful while they are dormant, there’s plenty of water and they begin establishing a strong root system before the harshness of summer hits. Winter is also when we have the best selection available all year!

Things to consider Put careful consideration into choosing the right tree for the right place. Trees takes a few years to establish & hopefully they will be there for many years, so ‘do it once, do it right’.

Some things to think about are:

PYRUS: These hardy trees will grow in many soils, including alkaline.

WHAT ARE THE IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS? Will it receive full sun? Be exposed to harsh winds? Is the soil suitable? Providing the tree with the perfect growing conditions will give it the best chance of a healthy life.

A bit of preparation, thought & effort at planting time can dramatically increase your trees chance of health & survival.

Some things to keep in mind include:

READ THE LABEL, double check the height, flower colour, preferences etc. Some trees can belong to the same ‘family’ but have different growth habits, it’s easy to be mistaken.

DIG A BIG HOLE! This makes a difference to the health of the plant. The hole should be at least double the depth and double the width of the root ball

STAKE THE TREE. This is a very important step that many people often forget—the small cost of a few stakes could mean the difference between life and death for your tree in

our sometimes harsh winds.

Place three evenly spread stakes just outside the rootball and use a soft tie anchor or similar.

WATER & MULCH. Give another bucket of water when you’ve finished planting (hopefully you’ve already given it the Seamite tonic) and add a layer of mulch, taking care to not touch the stem of the tree.

WHAT TO ADD TO THE PLANTING HOLE

River plan ready for critique Grace Prior

Greater Wellington Regional Council [GWRC] is urging Wairarapa residents to have their say on the future of one of the valley’s most significant rivers. Consultation for a new Waiohine River Plan will close on July 30 at 5pm.

According to GWRC, the plan simplified extensive work for flood protection options, undertaken before scheme management was transferred to the broader community with continuing support from the regional council.

“The outcome we’ve delivered for consideration

is an affordable flood protection plan that will protect public safety while preserving, as far as possible, the natural character and cultural values of the river” GWRC councillor and Waiohine Steering Group chair Adrienne Staples said.

GWRC said the plan would reflect an updated approach to flood protection which “treads a fine line” between meeting the interests of the people and their assets, and environmental protection.

The plan paves the way for a 70-year vision for better flood protection and the gradual improvement and restoration of a living corridor, pristine water,

flora, and fauna [including aquatic species].

GWRC hoped the plan would lead to better environmental, cultural, social, and economic outcomes for the river from the gorge to the confluence with the Ruamahanga River.

The Times-Age reported in 2016 that the initial plan had been quashed, because the community was unwilling to accept it.

The draft Waiohine Floodplain Management Plan [FMP] was released for public consultation in June/July 2016 and received 107 submissions from individuals and groups, GWRC said.

The council said most of

the submissions opposed the draft FMP on one or more grounds.

Following consultation with Carterton District Council [CDC] and South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC], GWRC revoked the draft FMP. Staples said the council had taken an approach endorsed by the Wairarapa public many years ago with this new plan.

“Since then, the Waiohine project team has refined its proposals, and now the public must have its say on the progress we’ve made.”

GWRC said the new plan would lower costs to about $2 million, a reduction of $8m on the original

FMP, while maintaining standards delivered by previous investment in flood protection and management of the Waiohine.

Staples said the work was a balancing act: “While affordability was important, so were broader outcomes such as improving the river to ensure it’s a corridor of clean water, native flora and fauna, tikanga and beautiful spaces”.

She said there was a call for a community-led flood protection plan in 2017, and that is what the project group had created.

“The Waiohine Action Group must be congratulated for playing

a key role in getting us to this point. It’s now up to the community to take up the baton and take ownership by giving us full and frank feedback.”

Once the full plan completed its consultation period, a panel would hear oral submissions from the public in August. The plan would then be amended as necessary before presentation to the GWRC for endorsement.

The plan can be viewed and submissions made on the GWRC “Have Your Say” website.

Opening ceremony didn’t feel normal Like many, I took the time to watch the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony last Friday. I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first.

I mean, well-performed, yes; entertaining, yes; Did I want to see it, yes.

But there were some parts of it, particularly the athletes waving at a practically empty stadium, that just felt a little weird at times.

Now, I don’t have to explain what an Olympics opening ceremony is all about, as most will know.

But part of it has always been about the athletes introducing themselves to the crowd. Traditionally, athletes of all nations will wave to a cheering crowd as they walk. And that’s what we’re used to.

But as the covid situation in Japan continues to deteriorate, that wasn’t going to happen this time, unfortunately.

It’s kind of like when the NRL [National Rugby League] kicked off their comp last season without crowds. It was strange.

John Lazo-Ron It was so quiet you could easily hear the heavy impacts of the players running into each other.

But you can’t compare the NRL to the Olympics.

The NRL can get away with non-crowds, as people will appreciate just having a sport to watch.

But this is the biggest sporting event on the globe, and it doesn’t have a competition window as big as the NRL. To me, at times, it felt like I was watching a rehearsal. As in rehearsing for the actual ceremony.

Crowds are a big part of what makes the Olympics, and I believe it’ll feel a little strange to watch events without them at first.

Although I admit seeing the joy on the athlete’s faces while doing their walk into the stadium was refreshing.

They’ll be happy to be in Tokyo after putting in so much to get there. And I’m pretty confident they wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity for Olympic glory.

However, I still feel postponing it further would have been the better option. Not just for the possibility of crowds but also for Tokyo to get the full return of what it invested into when it bid for the rights to host.

Believe me, I love watching the Olympics, who doesn’t? But waiting a little longer to hopefully get a chance to see the event at its peak would have been better, in my view.

Well, now that it’s all underway, let’s just hope Tokyo will become as successful as it possibly can.

One thing I wish I had done 5 years ago is …

A LEGAL AND VOLUNTARY END OF LIFE CHOICE The End of Life Choice Act 2019 (“the Act”) will come into force in November 2021. To date it has been the subject of emotive support, criticism and misinformation. The focus of this article is on the law as it presently stands.

The key points to note are: Any decision you make about whether you want to use the Act’s processes, or not, cannot be made in advance.

A decision cannot be made for you by your family members, or medical staff. this means your wishes on using the processes outlined in the Act, or not, cannot be included in your will, or your advance medical directive/living will.

The Act cannot be used by people “wanting to turn off your life support” or make medical decisions for you when you cannot make them yourself.

In certain specific medical situations you will have the possibility of personally making your own choice to obtain medical assistance to take steps to end your life. This is a personal choice, which will be subject to personal moral and ethical beliefs. The Act passing into law does not make considering or using these processes compulsory.

The Act could apply in situations of terminal illness where there is a likely life expectancy of up to six months, and in other specified serious medical situations.

The Act does not apply to situations of disability, mental illness, or “advanced age”. The processes are only available to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and 18 years or over.

At the time any decision is made, you need to be the one making it, and you need to be competent to do so. This means a person with dementia or who is otherwise not competent cannot use the processes in the Act. A doctor cannot start a discussion about the Act, or about assisted dying. If you want to discuss these matters, or the medical processes, you need to raise these subjects with your doctor yourself. If you raise these matters with your doctor, the process is: (1) The seriousness of your medical situation will be assessed.

(2) A second independent doctor must also independently certify that your wishes are your own, that you are competent to make such a decision, and that you are not subject to coercion from others.

(3) If those two doctors cannot agree on your competence, a referral will be made to a psychiatrist.

If you change your mind, or if the doctors suspect you are being pressured into making decisions, no further action will be taken.

There is currently debate in the medical and political community about the nature of the frameworks that will need to be created to ensure that there are systems available to assist people who want to use the Act’s processes. The nature of the safeguards in place, and the extent of medical training for these issues, is also under discussion.

The Government and health sector have indicated that the required planning is underway, and that detailed guidance will be issued approximately one month before the Act comes into force. What form guidance takes remains to be seen.

Within the hours of darkness Celebrating the magic of the Wairarapa night skies, six photographers, Glen Butler, Sharisse Eberlein, Mark Gee, Rebecca Kempton, Pete Monk and John Whitby, are exhibiting their images in an exhibition, Within the Hours of Darkness, at Aratoi. The opening, shared with two other exhibitions, was, fittingly, on the first day of Matariki.

“Earlier today the Matariki star cluster rose in our morning skies, marking the Māori New Year.

Matariki is a time to reflect; a time for communities to come together and celebrate; just like we are tonight with our winter exhibition openings.”

Association, continued this theme when she opened the exhibitions, saying that we now have a national recognition of Matariki which has ‘increased the desire of people to enjoy and learn about our stunning Wairarapa dark sky” and that the work of these photographers enhance that.

Napier’s involvement with the Wairarapa Dark Sky Association began when three Martinborough residents, Ray Lilley, David Kershaw and Lee Mauger, decided about four years ago that the night sky in Martinborough was as good as Tekapo’s and set out to ensure our skies stayed like this.

They began the task of applying for International Dark Sky Reserve status for initially Martinborough, but now Wairarapa.

At the time, Napier was SWDC Mayor, so the trio arranged a meeting with her to outline their plan.

This meeting prompted Napier to recall an incident from 25 years ago when her family hosted a Japanese student.

“One night we returned home from a function on a clear, cold Wairarapa winter night. Akiko got out of the car, stopped and burst into tears. We were really concerned. What had happened?”

“She quietly said, ‘Are those stars?’

After more questioning, we found out this was the first time she had ever seen the stars.”

On a trip to Japan and other Asian countries, Napier realised why Akiko had never seen stars before: There you can’t see stars, or the Milky Way with the naked eye, one of the key criteria for an International Dark Sky reserve.

South Wairarapa and Carterton district councils

have passed a plan change around lighting which will ensure Wairarapa will not get increased light pollution. Masterton will be added soon.

The work of the Dark Sky Association will enable us to see the stars, and astrophotographers such as the six exhibiting artists can continue to capture the beauty of our night sky.

FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS

Greytown’s winter festival wraps up Sue Teodoro Greytown’s monthlong mid-winter bash will end with a flourish this weekend with festive themed food, entertainment and more.

The second Festival of Christmas attracted strong interest, with organisers saying thousands attended in the first three weeks.

Event manager Rachael Fletcher said more than 7000 people were in Greytown during the first weekend, with significant numbers visiting throughout the month.

Event attendees had come from across the country.

“Retail spend is up, there is a fantastic buzz around town, and social media has gone ballistic,” she said.

A family-friendly event will be the drive-in movies at Greytown Primary School on Friday. The bigscreen outdoor event has children’s classic Jumanji at 5pm followed by ‘The Greatest Showman’ at 8.15pm.

Food trucks will be on hand with homemade treats provided by families from the school. All proceeds will go towards upgrading the school’s junior playground. Tickets are $40 a vehicle. $10 tickets for those without vehicles allow people to enjoy the movie from the back of a truck. Ticket numbers are limited, and organisers advise people

The Oyster Saloon will be dishing up in the Pinocchio courtyard on Friday and Saturday. The Greytown Country Market is at the town hall on Saturday from 10am to 2pm, with other activities and workshops at Cobblestones Museum through the weekend.

Saturday will be the last chance to see the lights and projections down Main St. Updates have been made to the light show to refresh the display throughout the festival. The weekend will also be the last time to see 16 Greytown homes decorated in festive lights.

Carson showed bravery in eventually turned the tide of public opinion in her [and the plant’s] favour, leading to the banning of DDT. Carson had to be extremely brave to stand up for what she believed in. So many were convinced she was wrong.

However, history has shown she wasn’t, much to our good fortune.

In our own lives there will be issues on a smaller scale that are important to us. Sometimes our case isn’t the popular one, despite evidence being to the contrary. This is a time to be brave, to stick to our morals and do what we know is right.

This leads us to setting unrealistic daily targets, such as exercising for an hour a day, despite the fact you haven’t really ever exercised previously.

However, sooner or later a day will come along when the motivation and enthusiasm isn’t there; maybe the weather’s cold, you’ve had a tough day at work, or a fight with a family member or friend.

These are the days a guy should be considering when implementing a new habit. Yes, the bar may be low, but at least you know you’ll be able to do what you have planned. It won’t be long until there’s some momentum and things start to get a little easier as progress is made. This will be the time to start increasing what you plan to do.

Tim Nelson This morning I read about Rachel Carson, a person I had never heard of before, but whose life has directly impacted on everyone who has lived after her. Carson was an environmentalist with a particular interest in the ocean. She wrote books on nature, including Silent Spring, which has sold over 20 million copies.

When the chemical DDT was created it was seen as the antidote to malaria, as it killed the insects that caused the spread of the disease. The inventor of the chemical even received the Nobel Prize. However, there was an unfortunate side effect to DDT, this being that it was extremely damaging to almost all living things.

It was Carson who led the awareness campaign against DDT. Against her were corporations, powerful politicians and business leaders, and a large portion of society who did all they could to discredit her. Despite this, Carson stood firm and, backed by her compelling and conclusive evidence,

Whenever we set out to implement a new habit we invariably start planning it when we’re excited about what’s to follow as we think ahead to the goal that the habit will help us to achieve. I have just been fortunate to have four days away attending a conference.

I enjoyed being with people I like, watching many presentations that were both interesting and entertaining, some from inspirational people sharing their stories and ideas.

There were also evening functions in which I met a lot of people from other areas who were great company.

I’m a huge advocate for healthy living in terms

of diet and exercise. I’m really consistent with making positive choices and I enjoy the benefits that come my way because of these lifestyle choices that I make.

However, while I have been away my standards definitely slipped; I managed just one session at a gym and I enjoyed the food and beverages that were available to me.

I think it’s important to have a break every once in a while, to enjoy the notso-healthy choices.

We can’t be perfect all of the time, and when we do let our guards down it needs to be without guilt or regret.

The important thing is to know that you’ll be straight back on the right course with the positive lifestyle choices after a not so healthy mini break.

Denier behaviour and adaptive strategies Comment

Mike Osborne One of the many oddities of the response [or lack of] to the challenge of global warming is the mirroring of denier behaviour and global warming adaptation strategy. The three classic steps of adaptation are defend, adapt, retreat.

Deniers follow the same process.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, the deniers defended the position that “there is no warming”.

The argument put forward was that any observed warming was within statistical variation of normal temperature ranges. Once that had been debunked, they adapted, they moved to attacking the measurement process.

They claimed the increases were manufactured by placing weather stations close to hot spots [airports, factories, highways] and by applying fudge factors to magnify warming.

However, one of the doyens of the public deniers, Dr Richard Lindzen, in the face of evidence that was hard to

ignore, acknowledged that warming was happening.

Then, the deniers had to retreat from the “no warming” position.

There are still some who maintain there has been no warming, but their credibility has waned.

Having retreated to “yes, there has been warming”, the next point of defence was that warming wasn’t related to greenhouse gases [GHGs] or if it was, that it was through naturally released GHGs, not released by humans but from other causes: the sun, Milankovitch cycles, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, flawed models, water vapour etc. In summary, they formed the ABC argument - anything, but carbon.

Where are we now?

Deniers acknowledge there is warming and admit the role of GHGs and the role of humans, but allege these effects are weak and predictions of floods, droughts and other extreme weather events are alarmist.

As records provided by the insurance industry show, claims from extreme weather events are significantly increasing.

Again, the deniers adapt, telling us this is because building costs are higher and construction has been in susceptible areas.

What next? Expect more defending, adapting and retreating.

Meanwhile, it has been a tumultuous couple of weeks with a spate of floods across the globe.

With each degree of warming, the atmosphere can hold seven per cent more water. This leads to intense precipitation. Last week, Zhengzhou, China, was deluged with eight months’ worth of rain in one day.

A new development occurred after last week’s floods in Westport. Some people dared to consider the inevitable, that the town may need to be moved or suffer the effects of repetitive flooding. That is a significant and costly retreat. You don’t have to be Einstein to work out how that might progress across affected parts of the whole country. Wairarapa?

Solway College now has a lengthy waiting list as it is being recognised both within Wairarapa and nationally as a top educational choice for young women.

An extensive number of solar panels have finished being installed, resulting in Solway College having one of the largest educational solar networks in New Zealand and becoming a leader in renewable energy solutions for schools.

Planting by students of an additional 385 trees has begun on the extension of the school’s native bush area. This student project includes nine kahikatea trees in the shape of the nine visible stars of the Matariki cluster.

EDUCATION FOCUS $10 million boost for literacy education An innovative research-based approach to how New Zealand children are taught to read is to be extended across the country with a $10 million Ministry of Education contract awarded to the University of Canterbury (UC).

The Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA), developed by a team of researchers at UC’s Child Well-Being Research Institute, is being rolled out this year to over 1000 new entrant/Year 1 teachers and literacy specialists around New Zealand. The $10m funding over the next two years will support the upskilling of approximately 5000 teachers and literacy specialists through university’s new micro-credential professional development qualifications.

The Better Start Literacy Approach builds on researchbased evidence about the most effective methods to teach children letter-sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, oral language, reading and spelling. The approach uses quality children’s story books and fun, game-based phoneme awareness activities to build these critical foundational skills.

Central to the Better Start Literacy Approach is the Ready to Read – Phonics Plus early readers, developed by the UC research team and recently published by the Ministry of Education as part of its new Early Literacy Approach. The Better Start Literacy Approach and the new readers have been specifically designed and developed for children in New Zealand.

The new Ready to Read Phonics Plus books and activities have a distinctive New Zealand character that tamariki can relate to in their learning.

After the Covid disruptions of 2020, Wairarapa College is forward focused again in 2021.

The school has had some great achievements so far this year, with exciting developments ahead in 2022. The redevelopment of the college continues at pace with the new bus bay off Pownall Street completed. The Supported Learning Centre, Food Technology and Canteen are under construction.

New enrolments are being welcomed for next year, along with enrolments to Poto College House, which is Wairarapa’s only co-ed hostel and located within Wairarapa College. Students have been involved in numerous achievements over the first half of this year.

Abigail McCaffrey, Tim Osborne, Will Tickner and Paige Johns, travelled to Wellington over Queen’s Birthday Weekend to perform their five minute scene from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in the national final, after winning this category in the Regional Festival.

Abigail has been selected to attend NSSP week in October holidays with the chance of being one of 24 students to travel to the Globe Theatre in London.

After weeks of rehearsals, fundraising and organisation, 70 choir and band students plus staff left Wairarapa College on a performance tour to Turangi, Taupo, Cambridge and Hamilton in May. In June, three Wairarapa College choirs went to Wellington Michael Fowler

centre to compete in The Big Sing choir competition winning the Festival Cup for school spirit. WaiCol’s history of outstanding results at Showquest (formerly Stage Challenge) continued when they were placed second in the regional competition in June.

Success continued for the college in the annual regional Rockquest competition, with Dragonfly emerging as the winners in June, winning the People’s Choice Award and Best Vocals.

As part of the Whakaoriori Kāhui Ako mahi this year, Wairarapa College is capturing the voice of students, whānau, teachers, principals and iwi in relation to Success as Māori.

Wairarapa College has enjoyed many sporting successes so far this year.

Early in the year Arthur Phillips came 1st , Trystan van de Loo 2nd, Keira Scott-Smith 3rd, William Feenstra 4th and Sam Armour 5th in the Interschool Cross-Country.

The swim team competed at the New Zealand Swimming Division 2 Championships in Dunedin with Henry Sewell picking up two bronzes in the 200m Backstroke and 400m individual Medley.

Jorja Younger won bronze in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and Sam Whitehead-Kai won a bronze in the 400m individual Medley.

All of the premier winter sports teams are gaining excellent results, with some competing in Manawatu and Wellington competitions. They look to build this term for National Tournament week at the end of August.

Wairarapa College is also proud to see past students achieving great things in their careers. In cricket Ross Taylor hit the runs to win the ICC World Cricket Championship while Megan Hull and Dane Lett are off to the Olympics to represent New Zealand in hockey. Also, congratulations to Hadleigh Bognuda for selling Vetcare Software for $100 million.

Last but not least, Wairarapa College students raised $7000 for Hospice Wairarapa during the Westbush Challenge, a sponsored 20km walk that the whole school completed in Term 2.

Kuranui College

Successful innovative Ignite Curriculum and Inspire Time programme

The success of Kuranui College’s innovative Ignite Curriculum and Inspire Time programme continues to attract students to the South Wairarapa secondary school.

With record enrolments for 2021, six new modular classrooms were installed at the end of term one and another four planned for 2022. The temporary classrooms will be in place for up to five years, while the MOE plans a permanent block construction.

Sixteen new teachers also joined the staff at the start of the year.

Having started in 2018 as a curriculum for junior students, Kuranui’s Ignite Curriculum has been implemented across all year groups and is delivered in two semesters. It focuses on allowing students

to follow their passions and accelerate their learning, while preparing them for the modern world.

Building on 2020’s highest-ever NCEA results for the college. This year’s results for Semester 1 has shown that students continue to excel academically. Both Junior and Senior student achievement data demonstrates students are making accelerated progress at each year level.

Senior student achievement has shown a significant improvement when compared with the same Semester last year, and is tracking to once again be the highest achievement on record for the college.

The statistics for various forms of chronic illness such as cancer, cardio-vascular disease and diabetes tend to go up with age.

So how important are regular health checks to catching these early?

There is no simple answer to this question as it depends on the individual, the disease and the type of health check.

The good news is that there is no reason why people should not enjoy good health in their sixties, seventies, and beyond, says Masterton Medical GP Dr Sally Milne.

Older people should not automatically blame a health problem on “old age” as the human body should still be working well in normal circumstances, she says.

“If a patient is worried, they should make an appointment with their GP. They shouldn’t attribute all problems to old age.”

Some signs that a check up with your GP is needed include pain that can’t be easily explained, is unrelenting and prolonged, and an unexplained loss in weight, says Dr Milne.

Inevitably though, wear and tear does accumulate, plus decades of ongoing exposure to environmental factors.

While these previous exposures cannot be changed, there are lifestyle changes one can make now to improve one’s health, such as quitting smoking or eating more healthily.

With some cancers, regular check-ups are advised by the medical fraternity.

Two well-known ones for women are mammograms and cervical screenings.

Mammograms are every two years and cervical smears are every three years until the age of 69.

Bowel cancer is the second most

Wairarapa’s bowel screening programme for men and women has been running for four years this month and found 42 cancers in that time. In many cases, they were detected early enough to be treatable.

Participants receive a home test kit in the mail, designed to detect minute traces of blood in a faecal sample, which could indicate the presence of bowel cancer.

Prostate cancer is the third highest cause of cancer death for New Zealand males, but prostate screening is considered optional by the medical fraternity.

This is because the results are not as clear cut, and a prostate biopsy can lead to unintentional complications, such as severe infections, Dr Milne says.

According to The Best Practice Advocacy Centre New Zealand (BPACNZ) which delivers educational and continuing professional development programmes to medical practitioners and other health professional groups in New Zealand, those with a family history of prostate cancer are at the greatest risk.

“Prostate-speciÿ c antigen (PSA) is the only widely available test for detecting prostate cancer.

“However, interpretation of results can be di° cult as elevated PSA levels are not speciÿ c for cancer and can be caused by other conditions, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis.

In addition, not all males with prostate cancer have elevated PSA levels.

“If asymptomatic [not showing symptoms] males aged 50–70 years (or from age 40 years in those with a family history) enquire about testing

for prostate cancer, their GP should provide information so they can make an informed decision, ie discuss the beneÿ ts and risks of PSA testing and the role of digital rectal examination (DRE) and refer them to patient information developed for a New Zealand audience.”

Another optional check-up is a cardiovascular assessment. New Zealand uses a combination of targeting individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and population-wide strategies, such as encouraging a healthy lifestyle focusing on smoking cessation, a balanced diet, regular physical activity and maintenance of an optimal weight.

A cardio-vascular assessment is likely to be more relevant to those with a family history of cardiac events, and something everyone is encouraged to discuss with their GP, Dr Milne says.

Jobs to improve nature Working to improve nature is the focus for nine keen students in the first year of the Pūkaha/ UCOL Conservation Operations course running in Wairarapa this year.

The adult students get to lift the bonnet on the environment and learn the methods to get it running smoothly, with a Level 4 qualification to show employers at the end.

On any given day the classroom might range from Pūkaha to Lake Onoke or the Tararua Ranges to Castlepoint, and sometimes just in a good old-fashioned classroom at the UCOL campus in Masterton.

Course tutor Jim Flack says students spend time understanding the mountains, forests, wetlands and dunes of Wairarapa before learning the skills to enhance the mauri [life-force] of these environments.

The sign out the front of James Hill’s dairy goat farm on the outskirts of Hamilton says “Jebel 5, Only the best for our goats”.

And he is probably correct.

Right down to the playground for the young buck kids. There’s a plastic slide, table and sawdust area for them to play on.

In Afrikaans Jebel means joyous and he says if you can’t be joyful when you visit, then don’t come.

Hill, his father and daughter Danielle left South Africa in 2005, leaving their large farm there to work on dairy goat farms here.

After picking up plenty of tips from two farmers, he could afford to purchase his own small block - 30 hectares with 450 does.

It’s fair to say Hill loves his goats.

“Their personality is awesome,” he said.

“They are individuals like us. Some are naughty, some are good, some are plain evil.

“And they can moan at you. If you are late - say for milking or something - they will tell you and

moan at you. They’re such awesome animals, more like pets.”

And the financial situation is good, too.

From a small farm, he can run a profitable business with goat milk going into high-quality milk powder.

The young buck does are reared on hay and milk, giving them a white meat, which is a delicacy.

POSSUM CONTROL POISON WARNING Better Nature wishes to advise that a groundbased possum control operation will be taking place in the Eastern Tararua area. The purpose is to keep possum numbers under control to prevent the spread of TB. This operation will be conducted as a part of the TBfree New Zealand programme.

Area covered: The operational area is located between the eastern side of the Tararua Forest Park and the western side of Masterton and Carterton. It runs from Mt Bruce in the north, down to the Waiohine River in the south. It covers mostly private farm and forestry land.

Operation date (approximately): Between 2 August 2021 and 30 June 2022.

Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison: Possum habitats may be targeted using Feratox (cyanide) encapsulated baits in bait stations or bait bags attached to trees or fence posts. Brodifacoum and Diphacinone may also be used in some areas in bait stations attached to trees.

The public is warned to take care when entering these areas and not to remove carcasses or baits. Baits are dangerous to people and dogs.

RUGBY GREYTOWN 30 CARTERTON 25 The third quarter is dubbed the “championship quarter” and that proved to be the case for Greytown in their thrilling victory in a tight ‘Moose’ Kapene Cup final.

Greytown had the early advantage and took a 9-0 lead after the first 20 minutes, but Carterton fought back and led 15-9 at the break, through tries to hooker Terongo Tekii, and No 8 Tupou Lea’aemanu.

The second came on the stroke of halftime when a Sam Morison penalty attempt hit the upright, which halfback and captain Daryl Pickering followed up and was first to the ball, with Lea’aemanu crashing over three phases later.

Greytown rang the substitutions at halftime and that paid off immediately with fresh prop Chris Hemi charging over wide out after a quick tap from a penalty.

Greytown were rewarded for their scrum dominance when veteran No 8 Tana Isaac scored from a pushover.

Morison replied with a penalty for Carterton, before Greytown’s replacement halfback Sam Walton-Sexton scored and Moo Moo Falaniko converted to take his tally for the match to 15 points.

This was a victory set up with a dominant forward effort, with prop Lewis Bush leading the way with several powerful runs.

Carterton finally got a sniff in the 65th minute when Greytown centre Usoali’i Samuel Ulavale was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

That gave the Maroons the space to utilise their outside backs and winger Fiula Tameilau ran through a yawning gap to

score handy to the posts for an easy conversion for Morison to narrow the lead to five points.

Much of the rest of the match was all about defence for Greytown and they held strong repelling wave after wave of forward charges

by Carterton, who surprisingly tried to charge over from close in, rather than spread the ball wide to their dangerous outside backs.

Unlike last year, where Greytown conceded a late penalty to lose 37-39 to Marist, they remained calm under pressure, forcing a penalty, with the kick to touch ending a tense encounter.

Tuhirangi looked to have the game sewn up after taking a 31-16 lead with 30 minutes to play and dominating the forward exchanges.

The young Stars side had other ideas though, running in three tries, two to centre Venu Siaosi, and one to Sivo Karavaki from a quick tap penalty to close the gap to two points with five minutes to play.

The latter came when Stars were reduced to 14 players with outside back Kingston Pene in the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.

Stars kept pushing for one last opportunity and that came when a Tuhirangi player illegally played the ball in a ruck, leaving it for Karaitiana to slot the winning penalty from in front.

The result is testament to the hard work put in by the management team of coaches Chris Senior and Hemi Tupaea, and manager Peter Bresaz, to get a team up and running after the club did not enter any adult teams in 2020.

Stars are expected to lodge a challenge for a promotion-relegation game against the bottomplaced premier team, Martinborough.

PIONEER 29 EKETAHUNA 27 Pioneer won their first premier trophy in nine years with a last-minute penalty to first-five Reece Calkin.

Eketahuna were the better team for much of the match and took a commanding 27-12 lead into the final 20 minutes, with tries to fullback Guy Rowden [2], centre Matt Raleigh and first-five Josh Pepperell.

Calkin started the fight back when he crossed for an easy converted try in the 60th minute, followed by a five-pointer to captain and No 8 KJ Rimene with seven minutes on the clock.

With time almost up Pioneer quickly tapped a penalty just outside kicking range and caught the Eketahuna defenders within 10m.

Calkin slotted the resultant penalty from 32m out to set off wild celebrations among the Pioneer players and supporters.

It is the club’s first trophy since 2012, when they won the Hodder-Steffert Cup, and just reward for the hard-working club management and first-year coach Koti Whittaker.
