Nikki’s 50 and smashing it Erin Kavanagh-Hall

When Nikki King attended her first CrossFit class in 2018, she could barely do a squat without flinching. Four years, many more gym sessions, and several competitions later, King is near the top of the national leader board for her age group — and is soon to represent New Zealand at one of Australasia’s most esteemed CrossFit tournaments. King, 50, a web
designer and trainee fitness instructor, has qualified for the Masters League Games — known as “Australia’s premier functional fitness competition” for athletes aged 35 and over — to be held in Melbourne this October. There, she will compete in the Female Solider division [for women aged 50-54], going head-to-head with seasoned athletes from both sides of the Tasman — in a series of demanding weights, cardio, and gymnastics-
based workouts. To earn a spot in the competition, athletes in each age group must submit their scores for four workouts, completed across four weeks — with the top two in each New Zealand region [and Australian state] advancing to the next round. To prepare for the upcoming Masters League Games, King is all focus: hitting the gym — her “happy place” — five days a week and fundraising online to cover her flights
and accommodation. Though this is her first international tournament, she’s no stranger to success on the competition circuit: having placed third in the Female Solider division at last year’s Masters League Regional Cup, a national competition held in Auckland. Quite an achievement for someone who, not so long ago, was “not a sporty person” and had days where she struggled to walk around the block. Now, her goal is clear: To get to the top of
the podium. “Getting third in New Zealand was amazing, but you’re never really finished in sport — you’re always aiming to improve on your best and take it to the next level,” King said. “I do have a few butterflies about the Masters — the competition environment is pretty intense, and it’ll be a challenge going up against the Australian athletes. “But I’m using the nerves to push myself forward and train that little bit harder. I want
to win in Australia — that’s what I’m working towards.” CrossFit, founded in California in 2000, is a high-intensity, full-body work out, incorporating elements from various sports and disciplines: such as Olympic weightlifting, interval training, gymnastics, powerlifting, calisthenics and strongman exercises. King was first introduced to the sport through Allan French, Continued on P4
