Wise up, slow down EMILY NORMAN Wairarapa is on the brink of unlocking untapped economic growth, but this won’t happen unless Wairarapa drivers can wise up when it comes to road safety.

Catherine Rossiter-Stead, a keen cyclist and organiser of the Huri Huri bike festival, says with more and more people out on their bikes, it was time for drivers to “look out and slow down”.

“I think we’ve got a lot more education to do in this region about how to take care of our cyclists,” she said.

“If we do that, then it becomes part and parcel of the daily psyche on the road – people have got to feel safe on the road.”

Mrs Rossiter-Stead said the safety factor on Wairarapa roads was the biggest barrier to cycling in the region.

“Unless we change our culture, people will be less-inclined to get on

their bikes which will be a real shame for our local economy – we’ve only just reached the tip of the iceberg with the potential growth cycling can give in the region.

“But a cycling economy will only be successful if we change the culture.

“The community that lives here has to be more cycle-friendly, and more aware of what’s happening on the roads.

“It doesn’t take much just to slow down and give cyclists a bit of space.”

With the New Zealand Cycle Classic (NZCC) kicking off in Wairarapa on January 17, and Huri Huri events commencing the day before, it was a great time for Wairarapa people to celebrate cycling, and show off their hospitality to some of the world’s best, Mrs Rossiter-Stead said.

Resolve to be happy Piece of mind

I’ve never been one for ‘New Year’s resolutions.

Not because I don’t think it’s a good idea to improve yourself in the new year, but rather, I think you shouldn’t be waiting for the calendar to flick over to start making those changes.

So, for those late starters on the resolutions bandwagon, or for those of us who have already fallen off by day 10 of the new year – don’t worry, you don’t have to wait another 355 days to become a better person.

I think the biggest problem when it comes to New Year’s’ resolutions, is that we set unrealistic or ambiguous goals, and we then forget the main steps of how we are going to achieve them, and end up failing miserably.

So, to save some stress, I’ve come up with a failproof resolution to make 2018 a great year of growth.

It is simple.

Concentrate only on what makes you happy.

Every day we wake up, we make a decision, consciously or subconsciously, to be happy or unhappy.

Yes, of course there are things out of our control that can make choosing to be happy more difficult, but with this one life we have, why would we let those

things rule our lives instead of the good stuff?

So, without further ado, here’s a step by step guide on how to concentrate on what makes you happy this year.

Step 1. Wake up each morning and write down three goals you have for the day, and on a separate piece of paper, write one worry.

Step 2. Scrunch up the worry, and chuck it in the bin – you don’t need that for the day anyway.

Step 3. As you go about your day, tick off the three goals you have written down as you achieve them.

Maybe for the first day, your goals are simply to make the bed, turn up to work, and cook dinner.

You’ll find that your goals become slightly more adventurous after a while, but everyone will move at their own pace.

Step 4. At the end of the day, write down three things that made you smile that day, and on a separate piece of paper write down one thing that made you annoyed, upset, or angry.

Step 5. Screw up that second bit of paper and put it in the bin – you don’t need that going into tomorrow.

Step 6. Put your day’s achieved goals and your day’s smiles into a box or jar and keep it.

By the end of the year you will have achieved about 1000 goals, and will have had more than 1000 reasons to smile.

Let’s start our journey to happiness today.

First baby of the new year ELISA VORSTER With an estimated 170 babies expected to be born in New Zealand on New Year’s Day, staff at Wairarapa Hospital were kept in suspense as the first two days of January came and went without any new arrivals.

The first baby born in Wairarapa in 2018 was baby girl, Remy Leigh Makiri, who finally arrived on Wednesday, January 3, at 4.30am to proud parents Yve Te Tau and Arana Makiri of Masterton.

Ms Te Tau said she knew as soon as she arrived at the hospital she would most likely give birth to Wairarapa’s first baby of 2018, unless someone rushed in and beat her to it.

The relaxed mother wasn’t fazed by her baby’s number one title but said there were other family members who had been waiting in anticipation of Remy’s arrival for days.

“Nan will be pretty excited — she was pretty peeved she wasn’t born on the first [of January].”

Weighing 8lb 3oz, Remy was slightly smaller than her two older siblings, Millie aged three, and Tiaki aged two, who were eager to meet their new sister.

New Zealand’s first baby of 2018, Rex Lu, was born at 12.01am on January 1 to parents Chien Cheng Lu and mother, Ena Lu, in Auckland hospital.

According to the latest findings from Unicef and World Data Lab, Kiwi babies were likely to live one year less on average than their Australian counterparts.

EMILY NORMAN These past few months have been a lavender grower’s dream when it comes to the weather.

The mixed bag of scorching heat, complemented by the recent downpours have been welcomed by Jan and Stuart Abernethy of Carterton’s Lavender Abbey, who have witnessed their lavender come through about three weeks earlier than usual.

It was going so successfully that the pair were forced to throw a Pick Your Own lavender day before the new year – the event usually rolls out from the middle of January Mr Abernethy said because it had been a lot hotter at the end of 2017, the yield and quality of the lavender oil would be “much better than last year”.

“The lavender likes a hot, dry summer, which we didn’t get last year.

“They still grow, and everything happens, but it’s just a bit slower, and the oil yield was down.”

Mrs Abernethy said the growing conditions had been so poor over the 2016/2017 summer that no one got an award for a 2017 oil from the Lavender Growers Association.

“However, we were the highest scoring though for our 2017 oil – we were 0.7 per cent off an award,” she said.

“The oils from year to year are so similar that you wouldn’t really notice unless you were an expert, but the hotter it is, the better it is for the lavender.

“In saying that though, this recent rain has actually really good for it, because it gives the lavender that extra boost after being completely hot.”

Having wowed their customers with homemade ‘lavenade’ last year, the couple have brought another yummy creation to the table – lavender fudge, made in association with Greytown business Laughing Owl Fudge.

They will be selling this, along with lavender and lemon verbena tea at their upcoming Pick Your Own Lavender events

“Lavender goes everywhere with food,” Mrs Abernethy said.

“We’ve made lavender ice cream, lavender shortbread… roast lamb and pork… the shortbread is absolutely yummy and physically has the flowers in it, whereas the fudge and ice cream, you’ll be steeping the flowers in the milk and then

taking them out.”

The couple have had interest from far and wide this year in the lead up to the Pick Your Own events, with a surprise promotion in the Kia Ora magazine under the events listings.

“When I first saw the magazine, I didn’t even realise we were in it until Stu pointed it out,” Mrs Abernerthy said.

But it is still Wairarapa people who make up the majority of Lavender Abbey’s customer base – most people will know the Abernethy duo from an array of Wairarapa markets held across the region.

“It’s nice to be able to talk to people at the markets, because once they understand that you are the grower just up the road, and Jan’s made all the products here in Dalefield, they engage a lot more,” Mr Abernethy said.

“You’re not just selling something that someone else grew and mass-produced.”

Lavender Abbey’s Pick Your Own days are this weekend and next weekend and run from 10am until 3pm.

Kids brave rough ocean ELISA VORSTER

Last week’s rough weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of 130 eager kids who sprinted into the waves for the seventh annual Riversdale Beach triathlon on the weekend.

The triathlon was originally scheduled for Saturday but was deferred to Sunday due to weather conditions, and only added to the day’s success according to event organiser Andy Matthews.

“The weather was good on Sunday and there was a bit of a swell for the kids to get into for the sea swim.

“They had a great day, the kids really enjoyed it.”

Participants in the swim-bike-run event ranged from as young as three right up to 14 years old and were supported by 12 of Riversdale’s lifeguards.

Mr Matthews said part of the event’s

huge success was that it catered to kids of all abilities, from those who were competitive to those who were taking part in their first triathlon.

“Every kid is recognised at the end - we call them up and make a big thing of it.”

The kids finished the event having seen the fun side of exercise and getting fit, which Mr Matthews said was an important message they wanted to pass on each year.

“We have a pretty strong Nippers programme and this really compliments it.”

To conclude the family fun, the kids took part in the More FM beach dig for prizes and a sandcastle building competition.

“It was great to see the smiles on the kids’ faces and how much fun they were having — it’s part of the satisfaction of doing it.”

Country ‘Queen’ gears up EMILY NORMAN Kiwi country music sweetheart Jody Direen is keen to hit the stage this weekend in Tauherenikau as the headline act for the annual Wairarapa Country Music Festival.

The young singer-songwriter from Wanaka has come a long way since her days as a youngster singing into her hairbrush in her bedroom.

She now holds the title for New Zealand’s Best Country Music Album (2017), and has opened for the likes of LeAnne Rimes and Kenny Rogers.

She has also enjoyed numerous Top 10 singles in Australia and New Zealand.

But she is excited to be back performing in her home country – and can’t wait to take the stage in Wairarapa.

“I have a lot of fans up there that are probably starved of my music because I haven’t been touring up there as much.

“I’m just starting to head up that way more and more and the Wairarapa Country Music Festival is one of the first dates I’m doing it in the area.”

She said she was also looking forward to checking out the Wairarapa countryside – afterall country music is not just a genre, but a “lifestyle” as well.

“I love traditional country music – it was what I loved listening to when I was young.

“But country music is now moving forward, and my biggest challenge in New Zealand has been helping people realise that – the sky’s the limit with country music.”

She first realised her dream when, at the age of 9, her parents gave her a Shania Twain DVD, ‘Up: Live in Chicago’.

“I just remember putting it on, and I

think I watched it like 10 times over – I was mesmerised by the magnitude of what she was doing, you know – the concert on the DVD was massive.

“It was that moment that instilled a really deep passion for music.

“For some reason I remember watching her on TV and thinking, man I want to do that – that’s what I want to do with my life.”

She was taught guitar by her grandma and recalled always being “surrounded by country music” from a young age.

“Because I was singing along to this music, I got a country tone sort of built into my voice.

“I think it’s in my blood as well, though, you know, I feel like it’s in my DNA.” Coming into her early 20s, she started to “really fall in love with pop and rock music as well”.

“I listen to Selena Gomez, I listen to Taylor Swift, I listen to all the stuff they play on The Edge.

“So I incorporate those interests into my music, and it wasn’t until about three

or four years ago that I really came into my own and discovered who I am as an artist.”

She hopes to convert traditional country music fans to her contemporary spin on the genre.

Her efforts seem to have proved successful with some fans telling her they never knew they loved country music until now.

“In New Zealand the most difficult part is that there’s been this attachment to a certain type of country music.

“It’s been attached to Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, and a more country western type of vibe.

“My challenge has been getting out there and performing and making people realise that I’m still a country artist but my music is a bit further from the traditional country music we know.”

“The really exciting thing for me is that my genre of country music is quite contemporary.

“People have a quite different experience with my music.

“It’s an upbeat, high-energy, party vibe that I put across, and it attracts many age groups.

“I’m really excited to see who turns up and to just have a really good night with everyone.”

Jody Direen will take to the stage on Saturday, January 13 from 8pm.

Also performing throughout the country music festival (January 12-14) are Cooper’s Run, Gerry Lee, and Masteton’s Tanya Warren.

Summer a great time for cycling CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “Huri Huri was originally put together to help build a community programme around the NZ Cycle Classic,” she said.

“But, we’ve expanded out Huri Huri into more of a cycling brand.”

This year, Huri Huri is hosting events throughout the whole year, kicking off with an opportunity for people to engage with cycling on the eve of the New Zealand Cycle Classic.

“The first event of the year is at Mitre 10 Mega in Masterton on Tuesday, and it’s a great opportunity to see some serious professional cycling in action.”

The event, on January 16, includes a display from the FreestyleLifestyle BMX team

who will perform between 4pm and 7pm, showing off their high-flying BMX tricks.

There will also be a mini obstacle cycle course for kids, an opportunity to meet the international riders taking part in the NZCC, and a chance to win a new barbecue.

Running alongside this event will be a circuit ride involving NZCC cyclists – kicking off at 7pm.

“We are encouraging people to come down and create a real party atmosphere while the teams are cycling.

“We want to see people come down with banners and flags, all dressed up – like people do on the Tour de France.

“Whoever is the best-dressed or most outrageous will win a barbecue for their family.”

Looking ahead, Huri Huri has also

organised a family fun ride on Castlepoint Station on January 20.

Riders can choose from a 7km short loop exploring the historic Castlepoint Station, a 14km long loop via the beach, or a 20km course option that covers the limed road to Otahome and back.

“In the summer, when you have these wonderful long evenings, it’s prime time for cycling,” Mrs Rossiter-Stead said.

“There is so much untapped potential for cycling here.

“It’s not just trail cycling, it’s not just mountain biking, but it’s road cycling, events, cycling to school or work. There is a lot we can do here.”

Friday night’s stormy weather did not deter the 300-strong group of rangers who descended on Masterton for the international girl guiding ranger event on the weekend.

The first weekend of the event, Flight 2018, covered a range of outdoor activities, and saw the arrival of Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy on Sunday morning.

The eight-day international event drew in rangers, aged 12 to 18, and volunteers from New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, to Rathkeale College.

Masterton ranger Amber Kennedy, 13, has been to many camps over the six years with Girl Guiding New Zealand.

“I get the opportunities that I don’t normally with school, like going on camps and interacting with other girls,” she said.

She enjoyed the commitment because of the extra knowledge and skills she can learn along the way, she said.

Baillie Fawcett, 15, has been with the organisation since she was five years old.

Masterton branch, and enjoyed the range of activities at the camp.

Girl Guiding New Zealand chief executive Susan Coleman said each camp was another chance for the girls to build on life skills, meet likeminded girls and to have fun.

“They get opportunities to develop leadership skills and develop team work skills,” she said.

Governor-General Dame Pasty Reddy was on site on Sunday morning speaking to the rangers as they completed activities such as raft building, riding segways and learned about girl guide advocacy.

As the patron of Girl Guiding New Zealand, Dame Pasty was proud of the leadership skills the girls clearly had built on over the years.

“It’s a wonderful range of activities . . . and there’s great community support and I think it’s all so wonderful.”

Dame Pasty commended the girls who rode the flying fox, and admitted she would never have been able to do that at their age.

Wairarapa Times-Age chief reporter Don Farmer bade his readers farewell last week, giving notice of his retirement and signing off his final column with, “Adios Amigos, thanks for listening”.

Mr Farmer, originally of Greytown, began his full-time career in journalism at the Wairarapa Times-Age in 1971.

He had previously been working with the New Zealand Farmers Co-operative Distributing Company, while writing Saturday rugby match reports covering games in his hometown.

After a two-year stint, he went on to become chief reporter at the Ashburton Guardian.

Offence: Given or taken?

W.C. Fields said that you should start every day with a smile and get it over and done with.

So, Happy New Year and all that stuff...

I thought I’d start off the year on the offensive and see what that leads to.

“Offence can only be taken not given,” they say.

Are you offended by that?

There seems to be two purposes to this statement.

One is to deflect responsibility from offenders to the offended and the other is to recognise that being offended is always a choice.

Can offence be given?

Yes, of course it can.

It’s an easy out to say that we have free speech and the right to say anything (bar slander) and offence is only in the ear or eye of the recipient.

It doesn’t have to be verbal.

Giving someone the fingers, flipping the bird and like gestures are all designed to cause offence.

We have our own indigenous form of giving offence, whakapohane, the baring of the buttocks as famously displayed by Dun Mihaka in 1983 to the visiting Prince and Princess of Wales.

However, it’s important to remember

Who doesn’t like butter on their five-grain bread or on a warm cranberry and white chocolate muffin?

As the comedian Steve Hughes says, “nothing happens when you’re offended”.

You make some decision that you’re offended and you might declare that you are offended but nothing actually happens.

How about taking a utilitarian approach?

If you choose to be offended is that a useful response?

Is it going to lead towards you doing something useful and tangible that addresses the offence?

If so, then great.

You can use being offended to do something about it.

In that way, being offended can be energising and empowering.

Conversely, giving offence can sometimes be useful but there are always consequences.

During the festive season I was repeatedly offended by over-beaten cream.

Before you accuse me of being unpatriotic and anti-butter, I’m not.

with zespri slices and passionfruit pulp quite simply offends me.

Adding blueberries doesn’t help and, really, whipping cream isn’t rocket science.

Sheesh, just keep your eye on it.

However, my perennial and all-time top of the list of people who offend me are bumptious, self-appointed arbiters of public morality and ethics who tell us what we should all be offended by.

Just give us the facts; our own moral compasses will do the rest quite nicely thank you.

For the love of politics

Carterton District councillor Jill Greathead has always been interested in “love-based” politics.

But it has been the coming of the new year that has inspired her new initiative which would work towards achieving that in the region.

Wairarapa Heart, a movement which she says would work towards a “compassionate, thriving, sustainable, and spiritual Wairarapa”, will provide people in the community with a forum to discuss needs and ideas for the community in a non-threatening and familiar way.

“It will be all about the communication with people,” she said.

“After 16 years on council I’ve seen first-hand that when it comes to long term plans, annual plans, special consultation procedures, consultation, very few people bother to take notice.

“No one ever comes to meetings or workshops.

“It’s just not appealing.

It’s not familiar, and they use words that nobody understands.”

She said it was the council’s role to ensure that the basic systems and assets in the community were in order, and that it should be encouraged to empower people in the community to make changes on a grassroots level.

“I’ve had great response [to Wairarapa Heart], and I think the new year is a great time to launch something along these lines,” Mrs Greathead said.

“The feedback I have received is that Wairarapa Heart should be the antithesis of a council meeting.

“There will not be minutes, there will not be apologies, and it will not be extremely exclusive.

“It is hoped this forum will connect people who feel alienated by politics with a lack of trust in our bureaucracies.”

Mrs Greathead said she had come out the other end of 2017 “battle-worn” after the “amalgamation issue”, and wanted to empower people who were “allergic to politics” to take up an interest in improving their communities.

“The first three parts of my vision – compassionate, thriving, sustainable – people clearly understand, and it’s already in everyday language.

“The last one, ‘spiritual’, which I know will exclude some people, I have kept in the vision, because I believe we need a forum that acknowledges that spirituality is part of healing our communities.

“Karakia is used in most formal

meetings now so this is not an unusual concept.”

Wairarapa Heart will meet at Heart of Arts in Carterton at 6.30pm on the first Thursday of each month, starting on February 1.

It will act as a “twin” forum to Wairarapa Voice and people are asked to bring a gold coin as koha for the venue hire.

Mrs Greathead said the forum was open to anyone who resonated with a “compassionate approach to caring for our communites… with spirituality underpinning this”.

She has initiated this group as a private citizen, not as a Carterton District councilor or as the manager of Volunteering Wairarapa.

Last year ended with voting Wairarapa people signalling a resounding ‘no’ to the amalgamation of their three councils.

Now the merger is out of the way, Carterton Mayor John Booth has revealed his plans for a cohesive approach between the Wairarapa districts.

Councils needed to be “talking in a much more cohesive fashion”, Mr Booth said.

“Out of the amalgamation debate, people have definitely indicated they’d like us to find ways to do it better here in Wairarapa.”

And this year that would be a priority, he said.

Certainly, there was potential for the councils to grasp “a better understanding of each other”.

An issue highlighted throughout the region had been inconsistencies with building regulations.

“There’s been a message sent out, and it’s really important that we take that on board and have some action.

“But we need to have those conversations first.”

The mayors would be having regular, informal catch ups about what was going on in their respective communities, Mr Booth said.

Carterton District councillor and motherof-two Rebecca Vergunst can’t get enough of the newest addition to Bird Park.

What she calls the “parent swing” was installed at the town’s southernmost park at Frederick and Charles Streets only a few months ago, but has already proven popular among residents with small children.

It is designed specifically for intergenerational play with a face-to-face design.

“There’s been such a positive response to the swing that I think they will be installed in more places before we know it,” Mrs Vergunst said.

“It’s just really cool, that you can just sit there and push your child on the swing for hours and potentially have a go yourself.”

Going into her second year as a Carterton councillor, the young mother said it proved how important it was to “have that younger perspective on council”.

“Being in the stage myself with little kids, you realise things a lot more.

“Out of all the councillors, I think I visit the Carterton pools and parks the most – well I’m in there a couple of times a week at least.”

Also at the park, which is about a year old, are a couple of other swings and a see-saw.

“The goal is to add more equipment and stage it a bit more,” Mrs Vergunst said.

“And hopefully we can get [the parent swings] in a few more areas – that would be really cool.”

“People have loved it so far.

“Every time I’ve gone past it, there have been people there actually.”

The Bird Park project was Mrs Vergunst’s first big undertaking as a new councillor, inspired by the need for more green spaces in Carterton.

Watch this space, literally Nick Sault Sky Watch

Happy New Year to you.

The Earth was good enough to do another circuit of the sun on our watch.

January is a great time for sky watching, even if you must get out late to fully appreciate it.

This week is particularly good for star shine, as that old moon above is not around to wash everything out.

On the 13th after 10.30pm you can get a chance to see the Chinese satellite Tiangong 2.

It’s going to cross the sky in five minutes and pass through some of our brightest summer constellations.

It will be particularly interesting for me, as so far, I haven’t seen either of China’s Tiangong satellites.

Tiangong 2 is an orbiting laboratory.

It was launched in September 2016, and only weeks later the Shenzhou spacecraft docked with it to put the crew of two aboard.

This year, April 22, the Tianzhou-1 supply ship provided the first refuelling of Tiangong 2.

The picture shows the launching of the supply ship.

This is an amazing achievement for a nation relatively new to the space race, but at 10 metres by 4, and weighing around 8.5 tonnes, it would be dwarfed by the mighty International Space Station.

However, I can almost hear the folk in the Chinese space agency, China Manned Space Engineering Office, saying “watch this space”.

They are planning a moon mission for the mid-2020s.

So, here’s how to see the space laboratory fly over the Wairarapa.

Saturday 13th, it will appear at 10.36pm just above the Rimutakas, if you are

looking somewhat west of NW. It will then climb high in the sky and reach almost overhead three minutes later, before plunging (not literally) down in to the east to disappear just after 10.41pm.

In the highest point of Tiangong’s passage across our Wairarapa skies, it will pass between the two brightest stars; Sirius on the northern side of overhead, and Canopus on the southern side.

It would be a fantastic star-studded night even without the pleasure of this Chinese satellite wandering through the star fields.

Wairarapa’s quality cuisine Ra Smith A mokopuna of Wairarapa The taste of summer in Wairarapa is the good life.

We export our taste to the world.

The orchards in Greytown invented the Royal Gala and the Kidd’s Orange Red apples, world famous. Vineyards in Martinborough supply the wines that splash on international palates.

The obvious lamb and mutton are the traditional fare for the tables of Europe in the Christmas season.

The mushrooms, cheeses and olives are starting to develop too.

My childhood won’t go past the taste of cherry plums from the side of the Te Whiti Road and my Poupou or grandfather would add fresh cream.

That’s the rich life right there.

My favourite local taste that goes to the world is kaimoana.

Crayfish, paua and kina are surrounded with memories of going to Flat Point with my cousins, uncles and aunties to dive.

It is also the food we honour people with for a funeral or celebrations.

In the marae we have a place called a kauta or cook house where the best community kitchen I know runs on love.

Most community kitchens around the world are richer people feeding the poor.

In New Zealand, marae kitchens are the poor making people feel rich from the kai in front of them.

20 years of drags celebrated BECKIE WILSON

The first day of Masterton Motorplex’s 20th anniversary of drag racing was dampened by the stormy weather that thrashed Masterton on Saturday morning.

Organiser Bob Wilton dubbed Saturday as a “disaster”.

The first day of the Dragstalgia event didn’t get started until 2pm, four hours behind schedule, and cars with parachutes were grounded due to the high winds.

Not many spectators turned up, but they managed to get through a couple of classes before the end of the day, Mr Wilton said.

But things turned around on Sunday when droves of fans packed out the stands to celebrate the anniversary.

“We have about 110 cars, it was down on the same meeting last year and last month, but everyone was getting lots of runs,” Mr Wilton said.

The Miss Masterton Motorplex parade saw a good turnout over the weekend.

Jo Johnson was crowned Miss Masterton Motorplex.

The winner of The Best Back Up was Nicole Ardern, followed by Bryce Doulton.

About 110 cars were involved in the meet.

Organisers managed to get through a few classes before the end of the day on Saturday.

Locals dominate top honour Two Wairarapa women are now members of the exclusive Order of New Zealand, limited to just 20 living people at any given time.

Featherston Booktown patron and one of New Zealand’s favourite authors Joy Cowley was confirmed as a member as part of the recent New Year’s Honours list, joining Martinborough-based women’s welfare activist Dame Miriam Dell, who was made a member in 1993.

“But the top accolade caught Cowley, who counts her only qualification as a diploma in wood turning, by surprise.

“I thought why me?

But I was also absolutely thrilled because it was a genuinely New Zealand award,” she said.

“It doesn’t belong anywhere else.

“I’ve travelled so much overseas in my work and always coming back, coming home to this country, is coming home to myself.”

Cowley is best known for her children’s fiction, which includes the books ‘The Silent One’ (1981), ‘Bow Down Shadrach’ (1991) and its sequel ‘Gladly, Here I Come’ (1994).

Before she published her debut book ‘Nest in a Falling Tree’ (1967), Cowley never dreamed of being such a success in print.

“I didn’t identify as being a writer until about 20 years ago… because writing was just something I did like breathing – it’s like saying I’m a breather.”

She credited her teachers for playing a huge role in her life.

“My parents didn’t believe too much in educating girls,” she said.

School where there were some great teachers who saw through the untidiness and the lack of parental support and they fostered the talents that I had which were mainly art and writing.”

Cowley is still writing and every now and again still finds time to clear her desk to paint.

“I like spinning and knitting,” she said.

“My only qualification in life is a diploma in wood turning.”

Cowley is patron of Featherston Booktown and is a huge supporter of the St Teresa’s school and church.

Featherston was an incredibly friendly town, she said.

“I walk past the school and the kids all lean over the fence and yell out ‘gidday Joy’.

“I love that.”

Mrs Wright was involved in swimming in Greytown for more than 60 years, as a competitive swimmer, volunteer swimming teacher, and committee member.

She taught Learn to Swim, water safety and Lifesaving classes voluntarily, and introduced the Royal Life Saving Society

Aquapass programme into Greytown Primary School.

Mrs Wright has more recently extended her volunteer activities to the St Vincent de Paul shop in Carterton and the Cobblestones Museum.

Mr Graham has played in brass bands in Petone, Upper Hutt, Oamaru, Milton, Mosgiel, and Dunedin over the course of 65 years, beginning at Caversham in 1951 and ending up with Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Band in 2016.

After having his left arm amputated after a farming accident in 1984 he set about relearning to play his instrument.

He worked with occupational therapists to create a harness that allowed him to hold an instrument, and has spent his time tutoring and mentoring young players, organising and volunteering at music camps, and fundraising for youth bands.

Mrs Phillipps served the Fijian community in Wellington on a voluntary basis for more than 20 years.

Her early community work included organising cricket teams from Opunake High School and the Taranaki region to visit Fiji for matches against Lakeba Cricket Club.

She has also helped newly immigrated families from Fiji settle into life in New Zealand, often providing food, clothing and bedding as required.

She has been a key organiser of the Fijian community’s fundraisers and preparation for the annual Wairarapa Pasifika festival.

As a member and representative player for the Masterton Golf Club for 20 years Mrs Phillipps has promoted the sport in Fiji and represented Fiji in various tournaments.

Andy Bearpark’s tranquil Featherston retreat is on hold until he can find the right person to steer the ship.

The former chief of staff to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had plans to open a yoga hideaway at his Renall St property in 2016.

However, his dream was put on hold when a fire ripped through and destroyed the newly renovated house.

Not long after, Mr Bearpark was set back again when he suffered a stroke.

Following on from his recovery, he forged ahead in 2017, rebuilding and redecorating his home.

Now he is on the hunt for the right person to manage the retreat.

“Since the stroke I just don’t seem to have the energy to get things done myself,” Mr Bearpark said.

“I’m happy moseying along meditating and that, but I need someone with a bit more energy than me.”

He said the ideal person would be passionate.

“They can take the profit, I don’t have a problem with that — they can make a real go of it.

“I’ll provide the facilities, and

they can run the courses and do whatever they want to do.”

As soon as he found the ideal candidate, the retreat could open its doors.

The property had been decked out to offer day courses in yoga, meditation, and a purpose-built kitchen meant Ayurvedic cooking could be explored.

When Mr Bearpark moved to South Wairarapa a few years

ago, he adopted a lifestyle worlds removed from his previous life as a highflying British public servant.

In August 2016, weeks after the blaze, Mr Bearpark launched a self-published memoir.

It covered off how he was once responsible for a budget of $18.6 billion, and included stories from his time in Zimbabwe, Kosovo and Iraq.

Nobody knows how hot this summer is going to get. Long, hot, sunny days although fine for lying on the beach are challenging for animals. Whether you are a lifestyle block farmer, a commercial farmer or a horse owner, the principles of drought management are the same.

Principle 1: Make decisions early.

Don’t wait until you have no water left, pastures are gone and animals are skinny before looking for alternate grazing or buying in feed.

Principle 2: Monitor animal body condition, pasture quality and water supply. Old dried-up grass doesn’t have a lot of energy in it so even if there is grass, it may not be enough. With sheep, you need to put a hand on their backs to tell their body condition, you can’t tell how fat they are by looking at them. This needs to be done regularly to make sure they are not losing too much weight.

KITTYCAT REHOMING

Local hero scoops award When people in the community were struggling to care for stray or abandoned cats by themselves, Lee Priday stepped up to ÿ ll the need.

Featherston’s Lee Priday was recently made a ‘Local Hero’ medallist at the New Zealander of the Year Awards.

Ms Priday began saving cats early in 2015 when she started Wairarapa Community kitties, a non-profit group in Featherston which practiced a trap-neuterreturn method with stray and wild cats.

Last year, she switched the focus to something other charities don’t often do, by putting stray cats into loving homes under a new organisation called KittyCat Rehoming.

The organisation has since become a charitable trust, which Ms Priday said was important as people can be assured the money they donated had gone to help the cats.

“I love cats and when the SPCA closed there was no-one to step up and do cat rescue.”

When she isn’t working her regular job at the Wairarapa DHB, she is either caring for the cats or fundraising for them by holding sausage sizzles and selling raffle tickets.

While she was thankful to be recognised with the Local Hero medal, she hoped it would help give charities like hers more exposure.

“I’m hoping by winning the award people will learn more about the charity and support it by volunteering or donating.”

KittyCat Rehoming Wairarapa found homes for 33 cats in 2017, and is ready to launch a new website this month.

Some of the 33 cats which were rehomed last year include Mister, Simba, and Maggie.

Here are their stories.

Mister, a very handsome silver-grey tabby, decided to leave his home in Carterton when a new baby arrived.

He decided he wanted to live at a neighbour’s house – but her cats weren’t impressed.

KittyCat Rehoming found

Mister a fabulous home on a lifestyle block in nearby Dalefield where is he much loved and doted on by his new mum and dad.

Mister regularly patrols the block to make sure no other kitties intrude on his new territory.

Simba was a stray in Carterton but he was lucky enough to be fed by an elderly lady.

Unfortunately, the woman had to go to a rest home and Simba was alone again.

But not for long. A kind young woman living nearby kept feeding Simba and called KittyCat Rehoming for assistance.

Although letterbox drops were done in the area by KRW, the original owner was never found.

So Simba was vet checked, vaccinated, flea/wormed and put up for adoption.

He was adopted by his new mum who lives in Papakowhai and adores her Simba.

Simba continues to enjoy the outdoors, climbing trees and is lucky enough to live near a reserve.

Maggie was a stray cat who made her way to the café of a vineyard in Martinborough.

The café owner contacted KittyCat Rehoming as he couldn’t keep her there.

Despite extensive advertising on social media, posters and letterbox drops, Maggie’s owner has never been found.

She was quite emaciated and after blood tests were done was

found to have a cancer on her thyroid.

Her surgery was quite expensive and KittyCat Rehoming asked for donations from the public to help with the cost.

Maggie had part of her thyroid gland removed recently and is recuperating and already putting on weight.

In the photo you can see the scar on her throat.

She won’t need any special ongoing treatment and will be available for adoption when she is completely recovered.

Shocking start to new year Sole Food

2018 has started off with a bang, literally for me.

The wonders of electrical storms are great when you watch them from a safe and dry place but when the loud bang and green sparks are coming from the power line attached to your house it really brings the wonders a mite too close.

Having never had lightning strike us personally before (I did wonder what foulness I had done to deserve a bolt from the heavens), it took a few minutes to figure it all out before springing into action.

However, we ran for it and left a noble electrical Knight to fix it for us.

All good now, thanks so much Sir Knight — I sincerely hope no-one else in the Wairarapa had a similar strike.

The storms have been truly of a global warming standard but at least they bring us some wonderful rain.

Of course, there may then be the problem of flooding-but let’s not go there!

We had enough of that already last year and wasn’t it a most unusual year — we had Brexit, Trump, floods, terror attacks, earthquakes, hurricanes and of course the ongoing kindergarten antics in America and North Korea.

The Cambridge Dictionary has chosen the word ‘populist’ to represent 2017 and it is a good choice.

However, our favourite word in the library is still ‘boondoggling’ and we bandy it around all the time.

It means looking like you are busy working when you actually are doing nothing.

Not that we ever have time to do nothing, we are busy, busy, busy being the hub of the community.

Do come over, say hello and have a sneaky look at some of the more recent additions to the shoe collection. However, talking about community brings me nicely into events in the Wairarapa this month.

What a busy month for festivals.

In fact, you could go from one weekend to the next just doing festival fun.

The Country music festival in Tauherenikau is on January 12-14 followed by the Castlepoint family fun ride on the 20th and the Gladstonebury Festival on the 21st.

Cruise Martinborough closely follows on January 25-28 with the big mama festival of Martinborough Fair on February 3. The wonderful Jan Preston is hitting the Jazz keys at the Martinborough Village Cafe on January 18 if you want a great evening tucked in the middle of the festival fever.

I feel exhausted already and January has barely begun — obviously getting too old for all this fun or perhaps the lightning did actually reach me.

It may be time to invest in a trendy pair of steampunk boots with rubber soles, just to be on the safe side. There’s a lovely pair on sale at the moment, so I shall sign off and go shopping.

Happy New Year everyone and stay safe in all the mad, mad weather we are enduring.

Surprise angel brings peace HAYLEY GASTMEIER A large statue of an angel which is on trial at a Masterton park is bringing a sense of closure to people who have lost loved ones, the artist says.

Elaine Hurndell spent $15,000 making the sculpture, named ‘Grace’, with the intention of placing it in a private, public space, where people could go to grieve.

In mid-December, Masterton councillors were surprised to find the ninefoot angel standing in Robinson Park, near the town’s northern roundabout.

Masterton Deputy Mayor Graham McClymont was behind the placement, which he earlier said was a two-week trial to gauge the public’s reaction.

He confirmed the decision had not been run past the council.

Lyn Kamo visited Grace last week to pay tribute to her daughter, Sue, who she lost five years ago to suicide.

“When you’re grieving it’s really nice to be able to come and sit and light a candle in remembrance, and just sit back and reflect somewhere quiet.”

Ms Kamo said the statue was beautiful and unique, and would help those in mourning find closure.

It took Ms Hurndell two years to complete the sculpture, which she moulded from her daughter, Montana, who works for the Department of Conservation.

She said she built the larger than life model to raise awareness about suicide and bullying, and had been inspired, having made a number of headstones for young people who died tragically.

Ms Hurndell said Grace was proving

popular, with dozens of people gathering around it on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. “People lit candles for lost loved ones and everybody leaned on each other as a community, which is exactly what it’s supposed to be all about.”

The trial location of the statue ticked all the boxes, she said.

There was wheelchair access, it was next to a peaceful stream, there was lots of parking, and it was relatively private.

Ms Hurndell said “one in 100” people indicated they did not favour the angel.

Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson said she there was strong community support to keep the statue.

“I popped down there on Christmas Eve and the angel did look great.

“There were a lot of people there and I have been overwhelmed by the amount of positive comments about it.”

She said the council would be discussing the topic at its next full meeting.

“We’ll bring it through council and see where we go with it.”

Late last year, council infrastructural services committee chairman Gary Caffell said he was miffed councillors had not been consulted about the trial.

Despite this, he thought the angel was “attractive”, and Churchill Park in Solway would be an appropriate location.

An online petition in support of making Grace a permanent fixture in a public space has so far collected almost 500 signatures.

Owners’ guide to microchips WAIRARAPA Microchipping is a simple procedure The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and is inserted into the scruff of the dog’s neck.

The chip contains a number that belongs only to that dog, enabling secure and reliable life-long identification.

The national dog database, which holds registration information including owner contact details together with the microchipping, provides a nationwide and permanent means of identifying a dog and linking it to its owner.

This will help councils to better enforce owner responsibilities and keep track of any problem dogs.

If a microchipped dog gets lost and picked up by a dog control officer, or injured and taken to a vet, the microchip can be scanned and a council can then check its number on the National Dog Database, to reunite the dog with its owner faster.

Other benefits of microchipping include: • Less chance of people passing on dogs without the new owner knowing it’s history • Less chance of people passing off their dogs as someone else’s • Easier to identify owners of dogs which have attacked or rushed people • Easier to identify owners who don’t care properly for their dogs or they allow them to roam

Working farm dog exemption The law allows that these dogs that are “kept solely or principally for the purposes of herding or driving stock” are exempt from microchipping.

No other working dogs are exempt and farmers must specify a dog is a working farm dog when registering it (councils may require proof).

Restored pub up for grabs BECKIE WILSON There is possibility that the local spirit Ross and Jo Wakeling reignited at the Tinui pub will remain.

The Tinui Café and Bar has been on the market for about six months, with only a handful of nibbles.

That was until recently when interest came from an Auckland buyer who has plans to enhance the pub but keep it local, Professionals agent Andy Scott says.

The Wakelings are ready to pass on the legacy they have built at their local pub over the past five years.

They bought the pub after becoming frustrated with the state the business was in at the time.

“We got it back off the ground, but the reason we went into it was we were so sick of it being a dead pub,” Mrs Wakeling said.

“In our younger years we spent heaps of good times . . . we wanted to get the energy back there again, which we did, we achieved that.”

In 2007, its then owners sold the Tinui Hotel building to a Wellington couple, who relocated it to Greytown the following year.

At the time, its sale caused considerable distress among some Tinui residents who took an appeal to the Environment Court.

After the relocation of the building, which served the community for more than 70 years, all that remained was the original public bar which was once attached to the old building.

Then the Wakelings bought it in the hopes to bring it back to life.

“It had been the hub of the community for so long, then this older couple

took over it and they just ran it down to nothing, it was a real shame,” Mrs Wakeling said.

She said the local community had been supportive of them buying the pub from the beginning.

“We did get that sense of everyone belonging back into it again.

“We just offered good pub grub, Ross was behind the bar and everyone loved coming down to see him.”

After five years, the couple have given it their all, and are now exhausted.

Mrs Wakeling hoped someone would buy the business who had a community focus.

The café and bar is listed for offers over $550,000 including two hectares of land.

They both gave up their previous jobs to take on the pub, and now are keen to return to them full-time and spend more time with their children.

Mr Wakeling, who was born and bred in Tinui, will return to the farm, Rock View, and Mrs Wakeling can continue working as a nurse at Selina Sutherland private hospital in Masterton.

“We have lots of good times down there, the Tinui community is a strong and loyal, fun community — there’s some great people out here.”

Rance chuffed with cracker T20 debut CRICKET

ELISA VORSTER Greytown’s Seth Rance was swamped with messages of support from family and friends following his international Twenty20 debut against West Indies in Nelson last week, where he took three wickets to help steer the Black Caps to victory.

Rance said the match went very well and was a unique experience that he wouldn’t forget any time soon.

“Obviously it’s always a pretty special moment to be get picked for your country and to get that first game where I was able to play at our home ground in Nelson and then take three wickets.

“It is certainly one to remember.”

He said it was great to have a debut knowing he had so much support behind him from both people back home and in

the crowd.

“I had a lot of messages after the game.

“Obviously lots of people had watched it and everyone was pretty proud with how it had gone.”

Rance opened the bowling with Tim Southee and struck hard when he removed openers Chris Gayle [12] and then Chadwick Walton [7] with consecutive deliveries in the third over as the West Indies chased 188 for the win.

He returned at the end of the innings to trap Samuel Badree [2] leg before and roll up the West Indies innings at 140 in the 19th over.

He said he was happy with his return of three wickets for 30 runs off his four overs, especially considering who he was up against.

“I got out Chris Gayle who was the one world class player they had who could have really taken the game away from us, so it

was pretty pleasing.”

The fast-medium Central Districts bowler had been called up just before the match on December 29 to replace injured fast bowler Adam Milne, but didn’t bat as the Black Caps scored 187-7 off their 20 overs.

He was named for the second T20 match but did not see any action as the match was rained off.

He was not named for the third match, but had rejoined his regional team Central Stags in Invercargill over the weekend.

He said he had his sights set on making the Black Caps team for the next T20 against Pakistan later this month.

“Hopefully I’ll know in the next couple of weeks if I’ve made that team and hopefully I’ll get another chance to play and do well.”

BECKIE WILSON The Wairarapa Under-18 girls’ cricket team were “absolutely stoked” with going unbeaten on the way to winning the Cricket Express Girls’ Under-18 tournament in Whanganui last week, coach Simon Roseingrave said.

None of the other five teams came “within a cooee” of the Wairarapa team, who dominated the four-day tournament, he said.

The girls had been playing together for several years and that team spirit became their strength throughout the tournament.

“They have always shown talent, and have progressed every year,” he said.

“They are now at a point where they are quite self-sufficient, they know what their roles are within the team and they performed them outstandingly.”

The side were powered by sterling displays from Georgia Atkinson, Kate Sim and Gemma Sims, he said.

“Georgia obviously dominated substantially with the bat, she made the first 100 that I have been involved with for these Wairarapa age group teams for the females, so that’s fantastic,” Mr Roseingrave said.
