Cancer loss inspires Emily Ireland Aunty Sue ParďŹtt was a big part of Rose Larkinâs life. So, it was tough when she and Roseâs mum were both diagnosed with cancer three years ago. But it was even tougher when Aunty Sue lost her cancer battle last month. âCancer is very scary . . . itâs hard to explain how I feel,â Rose said. The 12-year-old Opaki School pupil will be shaving her head next month to raise money for cancer research, and in memory of Aunty Sue. Roseâs mum Sue Cherry said Rose had wanted to do something positive âto show her love and memory of
her auntâ, so she is participating in Shave for a Cure. âSue and I were both diagnosed at the same time,â Roseâs mum said. âI had bowel cancer . . . she had ovarian cancer, and that sort of led to everything.â After chemo, radiation, and more chemo, Roseâs mum was eventually in the clear, but Aunty Sueâs cancer became terminal about 12 months ago. âSheâs been my closest friend for 30 odd years,â Roseâs mum said. âHer funeral was beautiful and her message to everyone was to just make the time to spend with family and friends because you never know what is
around the corner.â Rose is hoping to raise $1000 for cancer research and will be shaving her head on July 15 at ConArt. âSueâs son Holmes â his girlfriend Alex is doing the shave because sheâs a hairdresser,â Roseâs mum said. âAnd we have lots of family coming over on the day to support Rose.â ⢠To donate, search for Rose Larkin on shaveforacure. co.nz.

Men in need of health WOFs Emily Ireland Itâs second nature to get a Warrant of Fitness for a vehicle, but when it comes to personal health, many men put it on the back-burner. This month, the men at Whaiora Medical Centre are pushing the importance of health WOFs. Dr Pete Morrison said as a GP, he sees a lot less males than females come in for check-ups. âThere is a disparity in accessing services,â he said. âI think some of that is due to the Kiwi attitude, but it might be bigger than that. âI get the feeling that with menâs health, a lot of it is about self-conďŹdence self-esteem, and putting value on being a man in our society.â Dr Pete said men had lost the ability to communicate with each other about health concerns and tended to be âquite isolated in our thoughts and communicationâ compared with women.
