Pre-season training kicked o° in February and it is encouraging to see 20-25 players regularly attending both Tuesday and Thursday trainings.

Carterton welcomes any new members as players, administrators or supporters.

With a group of experienced players and some exciting young talent coming through, East Coast is looking to build on what was a solid 2020 season.

Based at Whareama, 35 minutes East of Masterton, our club covers a large geographic area and has some of the most passionate supporters in the competition.

This year East Coast will again be competing in both the Premier and Senior Reserve divisions.

Last year the Premier side just missed out on making the top four with the goal of getting there this year.

Aaron Matenga and Mark Percy will again be coaching the Premier side with Dennis Griggs manager.

Ken Scott is the Reserves coach and Kirk Bird Reserves Manager.

The Senior Reserves had a great season, winning their competition, beating Greytown in the ÿ nal.

We had struggled to get players in that team in the past so it was a big turnaround.

East Coast doesn’t have the star players but it is always competitive and we expect this season to be no di° erent.

RUGBY CLUB EKETAHUNA Rugby Football Club

Eketahuna is hoping to ÿ eld Premier and Senior Reserves teams in this year’s competitions.

The head coaches of the Premier side this year are Craig Pepperell and Graeme Cheetham, with Chris Osborne the ÿ tness coach and Stephen Penn the team’s manager.

Last year the Premier side made the semi-ÿ nals of its competition.

Club president Blair Percy says at the beginning of this season, the club has been struggling a bit with numbers, aggravated by some players collecting injuries in the pre-season games.

GREYTOWN Rugby Football Club Greytown’s preparations for the new season are well underway.

A slight change in the coaching setup will see ‘2020 coach of the year’ Mark Childs as head coach, ° anked by the local and well-known veteran Paul ‘Pottsy’ Pottinger.

Potsy coached Greytown Seniors to a championship win back in 1995 and has since been involved with a number of notable teams including the New Zealand and Hurricanes Schools.

Stalwart Tim McGilvary and Dane Buchanan will again manage the premier side.

Most notably former All Black Zac Guildford who will be pulling on his old club’s colours for the ÿ rst time as a senior player.

There have been quite a few changes in playing stocks this year with numerous retirements and players leaving the province including veterans Kingi Kaiwai, Tana Isaac and Teihana Brown to name a few.

The Senior Reserve team will back their chances as serious contenders in the Reserve grade once again and have acquired the services of former player Laurie Matthews as the new head coach to work alongside the industrious Brady Bingham as manager. Training has commenced for this group as well.

However the club has also been blessed with a heap of new and returning players.

The club will again have strong JAB representation with at least 60 registrations expected

from Under 6 through to Under 13 grades.

Last weekend our JAB kids were treated with a trip to watch the Hurricanes at Sky Stadium, the latest of initiatives by the club to promote a whanau friendly environment.

Even with the current COVID climate, the club is grateful to have retained the majority of its sponsors and continues to receive signiÿ cant support from the Greytown Trust Lands Trust, FreshChoice Greytown and EVs Bar. Greytown is a community

and whanau orientated organisation and welcomes all new players and supporters to come along and be part of our amazing club.

Pioneer Rugby is looking strong with our two senior club sides.

With our Premier team and Senior Reserve team, the club is focused on promoting the core values of working hard to achieve success, and respecting others.

Puketoi goes into the new season in a positive mood, says club president Brett Harvey.

Tuhirangi was unable to ÿ eld a Premier Reserves team in last year’s shortened competition.

“We’re going to have a Senior Reserves team, albeit with less numbers. We would like more players.

We have a high level of coaching and management structures around our teams to provide the best training for players to achieve their goals as a team and individuals.

“We have lost some key players since coming fourth last year and are down in our overall strength.

Instead its players helped out other clubs, most notably fellow South Wairarapa clubs Featherston and Martinborough.

Here in Featherston - rugby is no longer just about 15 men on a ÿ eld – it’s about getting men, woman, boys and girls together in a safe, positive environment – while letting o˜ some steam and being part of a family.

Our goal is to show that we are a diverse club that can cater for all walks of life.

The Jean St grounds have had some major work done to improve the surface.

We have just named our leaders in the Premier team with Jonty Miller as captain and Nikora Ewe as vice-captain.

The work of our Premier coach Koti Whittaker and his coaching sta˜ is now starting to bear fruit.

With good depth and numbers, it looks like we will be competitive this season.

Featherston will be ÿ elding a number of teams in 2021: Men’s Senior Reserves, Under 11s, Under 9s, Under 6s and rippa. Our numbers are good for all teams although new players are always welcome.

The players are mostly farmers who get lots of local support from the local community. A lot of funds come from crutching around 10,000 sheep a year, as well as launching boats at Palliser Bay for the annual Ngawi ÿ shing competition.

RUGBY CLUB G L A D ST O N E R ugby F ootball C lub 2020 was a rebuilding year for Gladstone after the retirement of a few senior players, with the Premier side placed in the bottom half of the competition.

However, the Senior Reserves did well, making the ÿ nal of Presidents Cup, a big improvement on the year before.

Steve Thompson will again be head coach of the Premiers, with Scott Forbes the forwards coach.

Dion van Deventer is the Premiers backs coach.

Grace Prior Featherston’s longawaited solution to its wastewater woes may cost “significantly more” than the $17 million allocated in the council’s long-term plan [LTP].

South Wairarapa Deputy Mayor Garrick Emms, who is also a Featherston ward councillor, said the most recent figure he had heard reported was $37 million.

He said the price tag was “mind-boggling” but that the full cost wasn’t known because alternative options were still being explored.

Emms said the current $17 million that had been budgeted for the Featherston wastewater pipes in the long-term plan would go toward short-term relief.

After requesting the withdrawal of its 2017 consent application for Featherston’s wastewater treatment plant last year, South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] has continued to run the plant under the 2012 consent.

The consent allows the council to discharge treated wastewater into Donald’s Creek, which then flows into Wairarapa Moana.

“We’re in the process of increasing the size of some and others may require upgrading in later years of the LTP to account for an increase in demand.”

Council said years of underinvestment and underground pipes failing earlier than expected meant water and wastewater network assets were no longer “performing at a level that consistently meet the needs of our community”.

It said it had increased capital funding during the past year and a half to address the problem.

“There is still more work to do to upgrade our water plants and pipes, but a big focus for this LTP will be wastewater.

“Water was identified as our top priority for this current financial year, and it is clear it will remain the priority next year.”

In last year’s annual plan submissions, 80 per cent of submitters stated water was their highest priority for council’s focus.
