Catch Wairarapa’s top young farmers pushing the limits at Clareville this Saturday Young farmers will be pushing the limits of their mental and physical farming skills at the FMG Young Farmer East Coast South District Contest this Saturday 10th November at the Clareville Showgrounds, starting at 8am, alongside the annual Young Farmers Show.

As well as members of Wairarapa and South Wairarapa clubs, competitors will be coming from the Ballance, Puketoi, Dannevirke and Ashley Clinton/Norsewood Young Farmers clubs.

Comprising 15 practical and theoretical modules, the spectator-friendly event is a rare opportunity for urban residents to see members of Young Farmers clubs in the southern half of the East Coast region test their farming skills.

District Contests are the entry level for the contest with around 300 New Zealand Young Farmer members from throughout the country competing between October and December.

At a District Contest the competition is all about having a go, but also an opportunity for the serious farmers to showcase their skills at a competitive level, says district contest convener Jess Morrison.

Young Farmers Show combines with Young Farmers competition The Young Farmers Show will add an extra country ˜ avour at the Clareville Showgrounds this Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

The Young Farmers Show is in its 44th year.

Lynn Lamb has been involved with this show since its inception and Trish Newcombe and Pam Nathan have been crucial to the show’s success and organisation over recent years, with extra help from the local Young Farmers clubs.

As these lovely ladies have put in a tremendous e° ort over the years making this show happen, they are deservedly hanging up their hats and passing the organisation of the day on to Young Farmers.

Petra Fransen, Aimee France and Rachel Gardner from the South Wairarapa Young Farmers Club have taken this in their stride and have put together a busy programme for the day.

Brandon Giddens, who came second at District Final last year, sussing out what is mechanically unsound on the Honda Bike in the East Coast Regional Final.

The show will be held as a fundraiser for the club, along with some proceeds being donated to the Rural Support Trust, Riding for the Disabled, and Hospice Wairarapa.

Interest in rural living - all you need is to join Young Farmers This year the Wairarapa District Contest of FMG Young Farmer of the Year is being organised by South Wairarapa who meet at Tin Hut, Tauherenikau, every second Monday of month.

The district’s other Young Farmers club is Wairarapa Young Farmers who meet at Lonestar Restaurant in Masterton every third Tuesday of the month.

To join Young Farmers, you only need to be aged between 18 and 31. You don’t need to be working in the primary industries sector to come along and join!

Members are involved in a range of professions including dairy, sheep & beef, agricultural contracting, banking, engineering, forestry,

butchery, teaching and lifestyle farming.

There are over 70 clubs situated around New Zealand and each club has its own identity and community spirit, backed by the national organisation.

Tinui shines again at AgriKids Tinui School made it on to the podium for the third year in a row at the 2018 Grand Final of AgriKids in Invercargill in July.

The Tinui Whips - Jock Johnson, Patrick Wellbrock and Max Williams - came third out of 21 teams.

Max said the competition tested their knowledge of farming, gave them the opportunity to travel, have fun and learn a lot. “It’s for any kids really. We thought we could be quite good at it, so we did it.”

Parents organised experts to educate the children on specific modules before the competition.

Tinui School principal Richard Lennox said he was “super proud” of the team and the effort they and their community put in, leading up to the competition.

AgriKidsNZ and Junior Young Farmer competition entries open New Zealand’s most hotly contested rural competitions for youth are open for entries.

The East Coast Regional Finals of AgriKidsNZ and FMG Junior Young Farmer Of The Year (formerly TeenAg) will be held in Dannevirke in April next year. The winning teams will go on to compete at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Napier next July.

Earlier this year, Masterton Intermediate School, Whareama and Tinui competed in the AgriKidsNZ East Coast Regional Final.

The Tinui Whips - Patrick Wellbrock, Jock Johnston and Max Williams - were placed second in the regional final and came third in the Grand Final.

AgriKidsNZ is for primary school students aged 8 to 13. Membership is free with the aim being to promote the fun side of agriculture. Participants don’t need to come off a farm, says Sally Terry who liaises with schools who enter either competition.

“It’s open to all children with the aim of exposing them to the world of agriculture

and all the possibilities it offers.”

Teams of three students are assisted by a teacher or parent to learn as much as they can about agriculture before the AgriKidsNZ regional final.

A typical regional final consists of eight practical and theoretical modules to promote the learning of all the different aspects of the industry.

Wairarapa has contributed college teams of two to previous Junior Young Farmer of the Year competition as well, including Wairarapa, Rathkeale and St Matthew’s.

This is an ideal year to enter, Sally says, as

the regional finals for both competitions are relatively close by in Dannevirke on April 13th and the grand final is in Napier in July, running alongside the regional and grand finals of Young Farmer of the Year.

Both competitions are seeing significant increases in the number of teams entering each year and Sally encourages schools to enter online as soon as possible.

FMG Young Farmer of the Year New Zealand’s ultimate rural challenge FMG Young Farmer of the Year is the ˜ agship event for New Zealand Young Farmers.

It is held in high esteem among the rural community and every year up to 300 contestants battle it out for the top spot.

The idea behind the contest emerged from a quiz show at an agricultural university in California.

The show was conducted in a semi-slapstick style with a cow on stage and eventually the idea made its way to New Zealand where it was turned into a successful and prestigious event.

The ÿ rst Regional Final was held in a small hall at the former Lincoln College and broadcast live on radio.

The hall was packed and contestants from throughout Canterbury answered questions about a bemused sheep that was on stage.

Practical ÿ eld activities were later added to the contest to ensure the competition represented all-round farming ability and skills.

The ÿ rst contest, in 1969, was won by Gary Frazer of Tasman and featured a ÿ rst prize of a return airfare to Australia and $500 cash.

In the second year of the competition a tractor was added to the prize list and sponsorships have continued to grow ever since. Today the contestants vie for over $300,000 in prizes.

How it works

Throughout New Zealand District Contests are held between October and December, such as the East Coast South Final in Carterton this Saturday.

The top contestants progress through to their Regional Final which are held from February to April.

The seven winners of the regional ÿ nals become Grand Finalists and will battle it out in Napier next July for the title of FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

Each level of the competition combines practical hands-on agriculture skills and general knowledge.

The level of complexity and di˛ culty increases as the contestants progress.

The Grand Final is a full-on two-day event including a practical day which includes all the hands-on competitions plus technical elements such as an interview and an HR challenge.

The contestants must also deliver a convincing speech on a topic speciÿ c to them.
