Reflecting the relaxed way people live today, one of the biggest trends in residential architecture and design is to treat the outdoors as an extension of the house. Covered porches are back in a big way. Patios, decks and gazebos are being furnished like living rooms, and gardens are being shaped into outdoor “rooms,” with hedges and herbaceous borders as walls. Safavieh is embracing this trend by expanding our commitment to outdoor furnishings. The recently opened Safavieh Outdoor design center at 2 Channel Drive, Port Washington, N.Y., features the collections shown on these pages and many more. To help you start dreaming and planning your own backyard retreat, here are seven top tips for design success: 1. Choose quality. You want furniture that’s attractive, comfortable and durable—built to withstand the elements and look great year after year. Today’s quality is better than ever, thanks to advances in furniture and textile technology, such as sturdy synthetic wicker and weather-resistant, colorfast fabrics. 2. Be colorful. Outdoors, you have the opportunity to use stronger colors than you might be comfortable with indoors. Fuchsia cushions, anyone? That said, there’s nothing wrong with neutral, natural shades, such as sand, slate gray or beige. You can add pops of color with patterned accent pillows and accessories, the same as you’d do indoors. 3. Mix and match.
