7TH ANNUAL PINK AID CT

ZEN VIBES A passionate pink crowd gathered at Mitchells Westport on October 5th for Pink Aid CT’s 7th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show. Many attendees were there to celebrate the dedication and compassion embodied by the first-ever Pink Heart Award recipient, Dr. Richard Zelkowitz, a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of breast cancer and medical director of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital. The crowd gave him a 550 pink boa salute in honor of the signature prop he is often seen wearing while treating his patients. The event featured a Zen theme courtesy of local interior designers, and an Asian-inspired menu served by waitstaff dressed in pink wigs and kimonos. The keynote speaker was Geralyn Lucas, whose books Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life chronicle her journey with breast cancer since her diagnosis at age 27. Lucas had the audience laughing and crying with tales that were hilarious, moving and meaningful. A stunning fashion show was presented by Veronica Beard, whose eponymous designers were in the house to lend their support. As always, the emotional core of the event was Pink Aid’s Warrior Fashion Show featuring survivors and their loved ones. Co-founder Andrew Mitchell-Namdar brought the house to its feet, walking the runway with husband Isaac and sister-in-law Jenny Evrani, who arrived from Tel Aviv to support and inspire those struggling with breast cancer. SATIONAL! We are still reveling in all the Zen, happy moments from an incredible day at the 4th Annual Pink Aid Luncheon and Fashion Show at Mitchells! Spirits soared throughout Mitchells Huntington as we celebrated our survivors, medical healers, caregivers, sponsors, donors and volunteers. Co-chairs Susan Cohen, Rosemary Connors and the entire Pink Aid family are overwhelmed and touched by the unwavering support and generosity of our community. The day was full of so many special highlights: The beautiful setting created by the Zen Spaces designer items and amazing array of auction items thanks to hundreds of donors throughout the community; the gorgeous Best of Fall runway show from Vince; Pat Battle’s heartwarming and impactful words, delivered from the stage in ďŹ erce pink boots; the outpouring of support at the Wall of Compassion; and ďŹ lling our Pink Purse to provide emergency ďŹ nancial assistance to women in need across Long Island. The pinnacle of our day was, of course, the inspiring survivors who took the runway with grace and strength in our annual Celebration of Life Fashion Show. On October 26th, nearly 1,000 supporters gathered at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich to celebrate the Breast Cancer Alliance’s (BCA) much-anticipated 22nd Annual BeneďŹ t Luncheon and Fashion Show. The beneďŹ t recognizes those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer and applauds BCA’s commitment to improving survival rates and quality of life through better prevention, early detection, exceptional treatment and innovative research.

The fashion show featured the Oscar de la Renta collection (above), followed by the heart-warming and emotional annual Inspiring Women Fashion Show. It featured elegant breast cancer survivors showcasing selected fall fashions from Richards.

For event co-chairs Gretchen Bylow, Hillary Corbin and Jordan Rhodes, BCA’s annual beneďŹ t is an act of love and a ďŹ erce conviction that a cure will be found because of the work of organizations like the Breast Cancer Alliance. “While survival rates are at an all-time high, 30 percent of those diagnosed with breast cancer still face metastatic disease,â€? says BCA president Mary Jeffery. “BCA will not rest until that number is zero.â€? Featured guest speaker Amy Robach, news anchor for ABC’s Good Morning America, addressed attendees during the luncheon. Since joining ABC News, Robach has traveled nationally and internationally to cover major news events including the 2017 Presidential Inauguration in Washington, DC, the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, terrorist bombings in Belgium, and the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. She had her own unexpected journey with breast cancer after being diagnosed following an on-air mammogram on GMA, resulting in her 2015 New York Times bestselling memoir Better: How I Let Go of Control, Held on To Hope, and Found Joy in My Darkest Hour. The event was underway at 11 a.m. with a reception and more than 75 silent auction items, including stunning jewelry, fabulous vacations, private tours and more. Highlights included a getaway to the Ocean House, a Triple Five-Star resort in Watch Hill, RI; a tour for 26 of the Brant Foundation Art and Study Center in Greenwich; and two tickets to the opening night of the Greenwich Film Festival in 2018. In November, over 50 YWCA Greenwich committee members joined us for a morning of brunch and fashion to kick off the holiday season. Scott Mitchell wowed the crowd with an impactful display of fall trends followed by a presentation of committee members-turned-models wearing stunning holiday-ready looks. Richards was proud to donate a percentage of guest sales to YWCA Greenwich, in support of its lofty mission of eliminating racism, empowering women and girls, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all by providing free domestic abuse services in Greenwich for over 35 years. FILLING IN THE BLANKS

SHOPPING IN STYLE Local givers and shakers gathered in Westport for a holiday-themed luncheon to benefit Filling in the Blanks. Style Advisor Eleni Kasparis shared her tips for putting together the perfect festive look for any setting, from office party to date night to girls’ night in. Models walked the runway in chic and giftable styles, and the finale featured fashion designer Norisol Ferrari’s personal commentary on a selection of pieces from her latest collection. The fabulous garments were accented with Hoorsenbuhs jewelry, an exclusive trunk show for the day. Jewelry designers Shay and Sorellina were also instore with trunk shows contributing to the cause. Based in New Canaan, Filling in the Blanks fights childhood hunger by providing needy children with meals on the weekends. A percentage of sales from this event were donated to benefit Filling in the Blanks’ annual Holiday Backpack Program. Q

Metallics, velvet and other romantic textures were just a few of the styles highlighted at our Fall Trend Luncheon in Huntington. The commentated runway show gave guests an exclusive fi rst look at our fall favorites as models rocked the season’s most-wanted fashions. The presentation closed with a focus on fabulous evening wear, with jewelry hand-selected by our specialist to add the perfect finishing touch. SHOPPING FOR A CAUSE Mitchells Huntington was thrilled to support Long Island Autism Communities in December with our second holiday shopping night. Chris Mitchell joined Charles Massimo, our great friend and founder of the charity, to welcome guests to a festive evening of food, cocktails, music and shopping for a cause. Mitchells was proud to donate a percentage of sales to Long Island Autism Communities, whose goal is to create supportive places where adults with autism can live independently, feel loved and accepted, and integrate into the community as contributing members. Mitchells Westport was adorned with portraits in December during our first-ever holiday shopping night for Circle of Care. Each portrait, as part of the charity’s “Life Within the Journey” exhibition, featured a child undergoing cancer treatment. The inspiring imagery came to life as the subjects themselves, in different stages of the treatment process, attended the event. Circle of Care provides practical, emotional and financial assistance to Connecticut families, through programs and services that meet the unique and challenging needs of pediatric cancer treatment.

Jewelry designer Jennifer Lau of Genevieve Lau Jewelry was also in-store for a personal appearance trunk show. Lau has partnered with Circle of Care to donate a Four Leaf Clover Necklace to a child with cancer for every one sold. Q

AN EVENING OF GIVING

DRESS FOR SUCCESS The holiday spirit came alive in Huntington when local donors and executives gathered for an evening of giving. In partnership with the Young Professionals Organization of Long Island and Dress for Success, Mitchells hosted a fundraising event and clothing collection. Attendees enjoyed an informative talk and discussion with Jack Mitchell, motivational speaker and Mitchell Stores’ chairman, before cocktails, light bites and shopping. Guests arrived with their new and used business clothing to donate to a local school district through Dress for Success. Q

ROLAND MOURET A master of structure and silhouette, Roland Mouret has an intuitive understanding of the female form. Born in Lourdes, France, he learned about fabric in his father’s butcher shop, observing the folding of aprons and the patterns formed on them, as well as meat-cutting techniques. There is a physicality in how he designs. Rather than drawing from sketches, he drapes fabric on the body, interacting with fabric, forms and flow with his hands.

NOUR HAMMOUR The label is the brainchild of Nour Hammour and Erin Conry Webb, who met as students at Istituto Marangoni in Paris. Both were “leather jacket obsessives,” Hammour customizing pre-owned motorcycle jackets on the side. In 2015, the Paris-based duo launched a ready-to-wear jacket collection, which became an immediate favorite with style-makers like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Blake Lively.

Roger Myers worked as partner in a firm that oversaw finances for people like The Beatles, then as one of the UK’s most enduring restaurateurs, creating beloved eateries such as Cafe Rouge and Peppermint Park. Over 20 years and 6,000 licensed premises later, Myers finally retired and found himself heading to St. Lucia, he recalls, “to drink rum and do nothing.” But when his boat came around the island’s Petit Piton and he first saw Jalousie Plantation sitting serenely on the beach, everything changed. When he discovered the property was for sale, he says, “I looked at the place and thought, ‘If I ever do anything again in my life, this should be the thing I should do.’” He set about creating Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort, now one of the Caribbean’s finest luxury hotels. The property is located on the southwestern part of St. Lucia about three miles outside the town of Soufriere, between the world-famous Pitons (mountainous volcanic plugs), designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Majestic and transcendent, the Pitons aren’t just spectacular because of their views; the volcanic complex makes the terrain of these two spires almost supernaturally beautiful, teeming with sulfurous mist and hot springs,

Tropical fruit and plant essences native to St. Lucia, waters from volcanic springs and locally sourced cocoa butter are used in combination with the finest in European skin treatments by Natura Bisse. Try the Sulphur Seduction treatment, which begins with a trip to Soufriere’s sulphur springs—the world's only drive-in volcano with bubbling mud pools and plenty of sulphurous steam—and concludes with a relaxing tree house massage and some light refreshments. Those searching for adventure will have no trouble finding it. If you dare, tackle the rigorous hike up the Gros Piton. The views from the top are well worth the climb, and there is nothing more satisfying than being able to say “I did it!” For a more relaxed route take the En Bas Saut Rainforest hike, a circular trail through the Gimie Gimie Estate in the shadow of the island’s tallest peak, Mt. Gimie, leading past a gorgeous waterfall for swimming. If a cultural experience is more your scene, head to the bustling Soufriere market, where local women in brightly colored head scarves shout their greetings back and forth in Creole, children play with their homemade toys, and fishermen mend their nets at the water’s edge. Seasonal fruits, freshly caught fish, fragrant herbs and locally made carvings and crafts are on display. Wherever you’re headed on the property, a multi-colored fleet of adorable Tuk Tuks— three-wheeled motorized carts popular in Southeast Asia—can help get you there. The vehicles were custom-ordered from Thailand and now provide travel around the resort. Flag one down and hop on! Featuring one of the Caribbean’s deepest natural anchorages, on one of the world’s most iconic shores, Sugar Beach’s location in the secluded Anse des Pitons makes it the perfect jumping-off point to explore the southern Caribbean by boat. Mooring buoys are located in the bay for short-term use, with year-round boat management service also available. Arriving to this paradise by sea “gives your heart a holiday,” Myers shares. “When you come around Petit Piton, it just lifts your heart. Every single time.”

he cork is popped. Tiny bubbles dance, swirl and burst joyfully to awaken the senses. The occasion? Tuesday! What better way to honor family, friends and life than with some bubbles, be it Champagne or another sparkling wine. Crystal Hinds, owner and operator of Effervescence, the acclaimed Champagne bar located on the edge of the French Quarter in New Orleans, agrees. “Some of my fondest memories of my [French and Italian] family getting together are of the Champagne toasts: the sound of the pop, the good times, my dad saying a few words and everyone clinking their glasses. The older I got, the more I wished we could do that every day... until I ultimately realized, ‘We can!’ “Around the world, people drink sparkling wine all the time. It’s only recently that Americans are finally catching on: sparkling wine pairs well with many foods, and bubbles can be enjoyed throughout the year.” Hinds’ philosophy reflects a growing sentiment across the US. Exceptional Champagne bars now dot the map from coast to coast. Each has its own distinct vibe, but all are places to explore the different flavors and nuances of Champagne and sparkling wines from various winemaking regions in the country and around the globe. Effervescence is housed in a renovated historic home and feels like a cross between a lounge and a modern bistro. It offers close to 400 choices of Champagne and sparkling wine—33 by the glass— and 10 different flights that change throughout the year, including vertical tastings that provide the opportunity to compare the same wine from different years. With so many choices, budding enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike will find bubbly to expand their palates. Hinds suggests that customers feel at ease asking servers and sommeliers for suggestions, explanations and information. “We pride ourselves on having a knowledgeable and informative staff.” Many Champagne bars also host wine education classes or special tastings geared toward different levels of knowledge, and serve small plates that exquisitely complement their selection of sparkling wines, including cheese and charcuterie boards; caviar and oysters are always favorites as well. In most cases, the culinary fare provides an exclamation point to the evening. “I want our clients to really taste the flavors of the food and the sparkling wine: taste how they blend together and don’t overpower each other.” Effervescence has become a destination for dinner as well as for bubbly. Says Hinds, “In many formal settings, people feel that the Champagne cork should ‘sigh,’ never pop, but at Effervescence our philosophy is to pop the Champagne! We want to hear it!”

Why I don’t buy clothing online.

I’ve never been one to favor online shopping. For all its so-called convenience, I much prefer the experience of going into a brick-and-mortar store where I can see and feel (and in the case of clothing, try on) the merchandise. I always appreciate the helpful advice I’m given by the highly trained associates in my favorite familyowned specialty store. Not only are these talented experts well versed in the quality, care and cut of specific product, but they understand my taste, my body type and my closet so that I’m less likely to make expensive shopping mistakes. Recently, I made an exception to my “only in store” inclination—and it did nothing to change my mind. My husband wanted something very specific for his birthday, which I was able to find easily from a major e-tailer. On my computer screen, it looked like a beautiful and beautifully crafted item, almost worth what I thought was an exceptionally hefty price tag. It arrived not just on time, but early; my impatient husband insisted on opening it a few days before the big occasion. As it turned out, that was a good thing. The item in question was not only damaged, but even had it arrived in perfect condition (or had we been able to overlook the imperfection), it was far shoddier than we’d imagined, leaving me feeling ripped off. Worse yet, the so-called easy return wasn’t all that easy. A return label had to be printed out based on some document the company allegedly included in the package. Since we never received the document, we had to waste tons of time trying to obtain the required information, after which the rather heavy box had to be walked over to the local post office to be weighed and mailed. (Don’t even ask about the pre-Christmas post office lines…) Of course, buying online from the website of my favorite specialty store works out fine for several reasons: I know the actual caring people who stand behind their product; I can reserve online and pick up in store; if I opt to have the purchase shipped to my home, I can return it to the store; if there’s any problem whatsoever, I can stop in and discuss it with real people, rather than wade through an endless maze of computerized voices telling me how much they appreciate my call while never actually connecting me to a human being. Of all the advantages of local specialty store shopping—the at-home closet makeovers, the instore events and trunk shows, the coffee and/or cocktails, the camaraderie and the caring—none matter to me as much as the expert advice I continue to receive from my favorite sales associate, who’s never let me buy anything that’s not quite right for me.
