The formula for forging an enduring love connection? Surely that’s a worthy quest for a lifestyle magazine. Let’s see—what does the evidence suggest? Be high-school best friends, boy and girl, then drift apart for a while. Go to the wrong restaurant in Paramus. Go to Toronto and find a castle. If she strikes your fancy and you know only her first name and job, call all the local companies in her industry asking for people with that name. What the heck? You could even try a dating site.
Actually, no guaranteed method of finding romance is known to BERGEN—or anyone else. Even AI can’t tell you how to do it; happenstance rules. That’s why stories of how couples connected exert a strong fascination for us here at the magazine—and maybe for you too. On page 26, read five Bergen couples’ accounts of how they got together, including the particulars mentioned above. Alas, these details aren’t surefire tricks. (Sometimes, when people go to the wrong Paramus restaurant, all they get is surprisingly good food.)

Love is our obsession each February, when Valentine’s Day rolls around. True to form, in this issue we’ve got tips for date-night dining destinations (page 14) and places to go dancing too (page 16). But admittedly, love takes many forms beyond what the Greeks called eros That’s why, starting on page 30, we pay a photographic tribute to the various kinds of love—including love for family, for animals and for the community. Is wintry beauty something you love? See page 50 for five travel destinations that show the season off at its best. Crave a kitchen design that “inspires you to cook”? Check out a Closter home on page 38. Speaking of cooking, on page 52 we present nutritionists’ healthsmart (and tasty!) recipes for chicken cordon bleu and Italian stuffed braciole. And are you passionate about Puerto Rican food? If so, our page 92 review of The Freakin Rican in Teaneck should get your mouth watering.
February is American Heart Month, and that means not the symbolic shape Cupid aims at, but the real-life organ that keeps us going. So on page 22 we get advice from a local cardiologist about the tricky task of assessing “multifactorial” symptoms. That is, determining when a condition—shortness of breath, say, or abdominal discomfort or lightheadedness—is a sign of heart trouble and when it has a less serious cause. (If you’re uncertain, err on the side of prudence rather than minimizing.)
This is also Black History Month, and on page 16 you’ll find out what’s happening at four locations around the county to celebrate that occasion as the nation gears up to mark its 250th birthday this year.
There’s a lot in this issue, and a lot going on in our county this month. So let me wish you the happiest of Februaries. May you be receptive when love comes knocking—in all the little ways, and in the big ones too.

OUR GUIDE TO NEW IDEAS, TIPS, TRENDS AND THINGS WE LOVE IN OUR COUNTY.
The best way to beat those winter blues? Don’t let the season coop you up inside. It’s a good time to bundle up, pull on your snow boots and enjoy the winter wonderland. Some ideas:
• Take a hike. Think our local waterfalls are beautiful when the water is flowing? Wait ’til you see them frozen! There are breathtaking ones at the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah—and the diversity of trails here makes it a great option for snowshoeing. For even more stark winter views, Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine has 50 miles of trails you can take on even when it’s cold. The Palisades Long Path Loop in particular offers spectacular views of the Hudson. A more leisurely stroll? Tenafly Nature Center keeps its paths easy to walk and navigate even with snow on the ground.
• Hit the slopes. While you’re at Ramapo Valley County Reservation, you can also strap on the skis. Cross-country ski enthusiasts travel from across the state for a crack at these 14 trails. For a more traditional skiing experience, Mahwah’s Campgaw Mountain is a must—there are eight beginner and intermediate slopes to try. The tubing hill is also great for kids and adults alike; choose between different runs for your perfect level of thrill. Or indulge your inner child, grab your own sled and head to some of Bergen’s most popular hills: Ramsey High School in Ramsey, Van Saun County Park in Paramus and Citizens Park in Ridgewood are sure to be popular on a snow day.
• Grab your bike. Don’t let the wind chill turn you away from a winter bike ride. Saddle River County Park in Saddle Brook has a great one, stretching a peaceful seven miles and bustling during the winter months. It will bring you past picturesque frozen ponds and streams. If you’re looking for a path that will take you closer to a hot drink, the Ramsey Bike Path is short (less than two miles), flat and ends up at Ramsey’s main street, where you can duck into a coffee shop for some cocoa.

The right setting can make an occasion unforgettable. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or a Valentine’s dinner, these picks—recent BERGEN Readers’ Choice winners—offer the perfect ambiance, flavor and charm:

A diseased tree isn’t something to ignore, especially if it’s right in your backyard. In Westwood, for instance, officials have been putting their heads together to save the town’s landmark “kissing tree.” The copper beech, located in downtown and estimated to be between 168 and 252 years old, is being threatened by brittle cinder fungus, a pathogen that affects a tree’s lower truck and roots. The condition has no remedial treatments and could cause the tree to fall unexpectedly. While Westwood tries to save its tree, what can you do to preserve the health of the maples, oaks, elms and dogwoods in your yard?
“If a tree hasn’t been looking right in recent years, if it’s discolored or if leaves haven’t been as green as they once were, you’ll want to get an arborist to give you answers before it’s too late,” says Jay Reitter of Davey Tree. He notes that licensed professionals can conduct computerized tests and scans to identify problems beyond a tree’s surface.
Dog: Frisky, a 16-year-old mini-dachshund
Owner: Elaine and Joel Call, Fair Lawn
This gal might be getting up there in years, but she’s still young at heart. The Calls discovered her while browsing a local pet store and fell in love the spot. They brought her home that day.

Frisky, reports her humans, playful, loving and extremely smart. “She has her own way communicating her needs us,” says Elaine. For instance, when she decides that it’s dinnertime or needs to head outside for a bathroom break, she’ll jump up next to Elaine and gently tap her arm to get her attention. Dinnertime is, of course, always highly anticipated, and Elaine says that specifically Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind has been a favorite since the pup turned 7. One place you won’t find her is a dog park—she’s so small that the Calls avoid such parks for her safety, just in case.
“She is a true blessing in our lives, and we are blessed to call her ours,” says Elaine.
The pooch turns 17 in March. Happy Birthday, Frisky!

Love isn’t just for humans this Valentine’s season—it’s for legged friends too. The Bergen County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center hosts special Valentine’s Day-themed adoption events, special opportunities to meet cats and other pets looking forever homes. With a range able animals, it’s the perfect to share the love and maybe home a new four-legged valentine. Just don’t plan to take home your new furry friend that day. A detailed family profile for dog adoptions is required so that dogs can be matched with suitable adopters. And sometimes adopting the right pet for your family can take several visits and some patience, but the pairing is often worth it in the end.

In early January, Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation he was “passionate” about: a bill banning students’ cellphone use in K-12 schools. Meanwhile, five school districts in Bergen—Alpine, Englewood, Ramsey, Wallington and Garfield’s Bergen Arts and Science Charter School—received funding from the state’s Phone-Free Schools Grant Program to help implement stricter cellphone policies. The grants are for districts considering a “bell-to-bell” policy of locking up all phones during the day, for grades 6 to 12. Ramsey already implemented a phone lockup policy in January 2025, but only at the high school. (Younger students needed to leave their phones in backpacks or lockers, while high school students locked them away in special Yondr pouches.)
The medal for “most romantic dance” often goes to the Argentine tango for the physical closeness it requires, but we also swoon over a waltz scene in a Regency romance and the synchrony and trust needed in West Coast Swing. Our country turns 250 in 2026, but that’s not the only anniversary. This year also marks what amounts to the centennial of Black History Month. (The month was officially recognized 50 years ago by President Gerald Ford, expanding on Negro History Week, which had been introduced by African American historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926, close to the February birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.) Events nationwide will recognize Black History Month— including here in Bergen County:
• At the Logan Family Life Center in Hackensack, the Black History Month Health Fair returns on Feb. 28. Sponsored by several of Bergen County’s African American organizations, this is an opportunity to meet local health-care providers while enjoying food, giveaways and free health screenings. More info: bergennaacp.org
• Bergen Community College marks Black History Month with engaging talks and other events. It also teams up with local and county governments to present keynote speakers, a closing banquet and musical performances. Stay tuned for the full schedule. More info: bergen.edu
• Throughout the month, the Bergenfield Public Library hosts activities for all ages, including Black history-themed trivia nights and bingo for kids, a History Word Scramble game with prizes (Feb. 10) and a Zawadi African Dance and Drumming performance for all (Feb. 8).
• Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood marks the occasion on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. with the Black History Celebration Through the Lens of Hip Hop, a show aimed for kids. Multi-disciplinary artist D-Cross presents key moments from Black history using rap, beatboxing and spoken word poetry. The show is recommended for grades 4 to 8.

Coach
P. J. Petrow of Allendale caught the soccer bug from his parents, and he’d love to pass it on. But his job at home is just to be Dad.
In 1994, 16-year-old Peter Joseph (P. J.) Petrow had only a learner’s permit when his father passed him the keys to the car. The destination was Detroit, where the Pompton Lakes teen and his soccer-loving parents were going to watch the sport’s most prestigious event, the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup.
Now 48, Petrow lives in Allendale with his wife and five children. And—no surprise—soccer is still a large part of his life. He’s athletic director and head coach of the girls’ soccer team at Saddle River Day School.
When did you get into soccer?
I started playing when I was 7. My father went to Don Bosco Tech in Paterson and was a good player on the team. My parents led me down the soccer path, and it was a lot of fun.
Tell us about that path.

I went to Pompton Lakes High School and was a captain for four years: first on the freshman team, then junior varsity and varsity. Then I went to Kean University, but an injury ended my college playing days. I blew out my ankle so bad that doctors wanted to use cadaver parts to repair it. How did you keep soccer in your life?
After I recovered, I started playing with Roma S.C., a soccer club based in Paterson. Its games and practices weren’t as frequent as a college team’s; that allowed me to play elite soccer without too much stress on my body. Then you turned soccer into a career.
I started coaching youth teams and local clubs, including the Wyckoff Torpedoes and New Jersey Crush. I also became a middle-school gym teacher in Upper Saddle River and had a great relationship with the staff there. Then, about nine years ago, I was offered the job of head coach of the girls’ varsity soccer team at Saddle River
Day School. I later interviewed and got the job as athletics director of SRDS, and I’ve been in that position full time for three years. The level of soccer talent in Bergen County, from youth through high school, is through the roof, and I’m proud help the kids develop. What are your other projects?
During the pandemic, I joined Rezzil, a VR [virtual reality] startup software company in England that works with and helps analyze injured athletes. They closed their North America branch, but I’m still with them as a consultant. We also started Futsal 201, which I run with my partner, Simon Royle. There was and is a huge market for futsal [a version of soccer that emphasizes technical skill] in our area. We have double the number of teams in all age groups from when we started. What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
Finding balance between work and family life is
tough. I believe if things are good at work, they probably can be better at home—and vice versa. My wife has been a saint, and I couldn’t do what I do without her support.
The most rewarding part?
I can list coaching accolades, but it’s just refreshing to have a happy and healthy family and see our kids following their own paths.
Do you encourage your kids to play soccer?
We introduce them to soccer, but we don’t push them to play. Our oldest is in college, and she excelled in track and field. We have a high school son who plays soccer, and two middle schoolers, one plays soccer and lacrosse and the other is into performing arts and fences. Our first grader is just getting into soccer, so we’ll see where she goes. Have you coached your kids?
My rule has always been never to coach the kids. My job with them is to be Dad. I don’t want them to ask me about playing time or games. I want them to ask, “Where are we going for dinner?”
Thoughts about the World Cup coming to New Jersey?
It’s exciting. MetLife Stadium got blessed with some high-level, high-profile games and countries, including Brazil, Morocco, France, Germany and England. Of course, the finals will be played here. The price for tickets in 1994, the last time the U.S. hosted the World Cup, wasn’t that bad. I haven’t looked yet, but I can imagine how much they cost this year.
Any fond memories from the ’94 World Cup?
I was 16, and my parents were very into it. I remember getting my learner’s permit, my dad handing me the keys and saying, “You’re driving us to Michigan to see the World Cup—just take a right when we reach Toledo.” We watched the U.S. play Switzerland to a 1-1 draw. My oldest son will be 17 when the Cup is played here, so I’m hoping we can have great memories together.

ODDS ARE, THAT “MULTIFACTORIAL” SYMPTOM YOU’RE FEELING DOESN’T MEAN YOUR HEART’S IN TROUBLE. BUT JUST IN CASE, HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW.
Shortness of breath, says Kate Raiti, M.D., a cardiologist who practices at Valley Medical Group Cardiology in Montvale, is “a multifactorial symptom, meaning it can be caused by many things.”
“Because of that, people think, ‘Well, this must be a symptom related to my lungs.’ They don’t realize that decreased oxygen in the blood from a heart problem can feel like that.” Shortness of breath, she explains, is one of the lesser-known signs of a heart attack.
That term “multifactorial” sounds dry and bureaucratic. But if it means you’re ignoring a serious symptom because you automatically chalk it up to an everyday cause, it can be lethal.
Dr. Raiti isn’t suggesting that you should rush to the clinic with every huff and puff after exertion. But she does want people—especially those at high risk for heart disease—to be vigilant. If you find yourself suddenly becoming very winded doing something you usually do with ease, such as climbing a short flight of stairs or moving a trash can, seek medical attention.
After all, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, across genders and ethnic groups. It’s responsible for one in every three deaths. And heart attack’s best-known calling card—chest discomfort that is heavy, not sharp, and that feels like an elephant on the chest, along with pain radiating down the arm that gets worse in a few minutes—doesn’t appear in all cases of this sneaky, often fatal malady. In some patients, especially women, people with diabetes and those over age 75, heart attack announces itself not with those classic symptoms but with things like shortness of breath—and abdominal discomfort.
That’s another tricky one. Of course, we’ve all known abdominal discomfort that has purely digestive causes and need not set off cardiac alarm bells. It, too, is multifactorial. But, as Dr. Raiti explains, it can also be another atypical symptom of heart attack. “It’s vague in nature,” she says. “Patients don’t know exactly where it’s coming from or why. Along with that come nausea and vomiting. That symptom comes from congestion in the abdomen building up from your heart not working properly.”
Other symptoms the doctor says to watch out for (and of course they too can have other causes): “lightheadedness and profound, unusual fatigue.”

cough. If you’re lying down at night and feeling that you’re gasping for air or wheezing, that could be a symptom of your heart pump not working properly.” Finally, watch out for abdominal symptoms here too. “Bloating, getting full faster or experiencing a loss of appetite” can be hints that it’s time to see a cardiologist to be evaluated.

Kate Raiti, M.D., Cardiologist, Valley Medical Group Cardiology
Dr. Raiti reiterates that these symptoms are a concern when they are suddenonset or very unusual. “If this is new, strange and severe enough that it’s stopping you from doing something you usually have no trouble doing, that’s a reason to get evaluated,” she says. If you think you’re having a heart attack, every second counts—call 911 and get to an emergency room as soon as possible.
Of course, heart disease doesn’t always take the form of a heart attack itself. A pounding or racing heart (heart palpitations, in some cases called tachycardia), increased exercise intolerance and dizziness or fainting spells are fairly well-known signs that a person’s heart should be evaluated. But there are less common signs as well. “If you bend over and feel short of breath, that’s a big one,” the doctor says. “In addition, pay attention to any type of nocturnal
Just as important as watching for signs, of course, is taking care of your heart. A healthy diet high in vegetables and lean meats (the doctor flags the tried and true Mediterranean diet as a heart-healthy staple), consistent physical activity and avoiding smoking (including second-hand exposure, e-cigarettes and vapes) are all essential, as is managing your weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. But one aspect of heart health that is often overlooked, Dr. Raiti says, is “sleep health. Your sleep duration and quality have an incredible impact on your heart.”
She continues: “When I see patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure, the first thing I ask is if they’ve had a sleep study, or been evaluated for obstr uctive sleep apnea. Sleep plays a huge part in our blood pressure and therefore our overall cardiovascular health.” (Of course, getting heart-healthy sleep can have other benefits too, such as leaving you less sleepy!)
“Patients often feel nervous about seeing a cardiologist,” says Dr. Raiti. “But we can help estimate their risk of heart disease—and then how to mitigate it. We really can help you understand your heart and body better.”

HAVEN’T TIME FOR A GYM VISIT OR SPACE FOR BULKY EXERCISE APPARATUS?
THERE’S A SIMPLER WAY TO GET FIT.
Today’s sophisticated exercise equipment is great—there’s no doubt that, properly and regularly used with discipline and determination, it can help you achieve the body of your dreams. But it’s not your only choice.
Right in your home, using only things that every home contains, there’s another path open to you: the no-equipment approach.
Home has one big selling point: It isn’t hard to get to. In the comfort of your own living room (or rec room, bedroom, office, basement, garage, whatever) and without a workout bench or a Nautilus machine, you can use your own body weight—along with gravity—to power an effective workout. And after all, isn’t the most effective exercise regimen the one you’ll actually perform regularly?
A January 2025 New York Times article called at-home workouts and strength training without equipment the latest health trends that fitness experts “hate”—they’re so easy that anyone can do them with little to no supervision. (You’ll want to check with your doctor, however, to make sure you’re physically able to exercise.)
Is your time limited? Take advantage of those small blocks of unclaimed time that pop up throughout your day. Consider doing squats while you wait for your morning coffee to brew, for example, or find a spot to do wall pushups or sit-to-stand exercises while lunch is heating up. Waiting for water to boil? Do a couple of lunges in the kitchen or stand on one leg for 20 seconds (then switch to the other) to work on your balance. The Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC), after all, recommends strength training for 30 minutes, two non-consecutive days per week, so you may as well fit in a quick workout when you can.
Try this at-home exercise routine, which is suitable for any level of skill (or strength) and requires zero equipment, other than objects found in most homes:
• Bicep curl: Run a towel underneath the seat of a chair. With the back of the chair facing away from you, do a set of curls by lifting the chair with the towel. Most four-legged chairs weigh around 10 pounds.
• Triceps dip: Sit on the edge of the chair and rest your hands on the seat behind you. Position your feet away from the bench, legs straight and heels on the floor. Lower yourself until your upper arms are parallel to the ground, then push back up.
• Step-ups: With one leg, step up onto that sturdy chair and back down again, then repeat with the other leg. (Keep legs straight and try not to bend forward.)
• Squats: Stand in front of that trusty chair with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place your weight more on your heels than on the balls of your feet, and bend your knees as you lower your butt toward the chair in a slow, controlled motion while you count to four. Pause, then slowly rise back up to a standing position.
• Bicycle crunches. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet on the floor. Place your hands behind your head with your elbows out and lift your upper body slightly off the floor. Extend one leg out while bending the other knee toward your chest and twist your upper body so that the opposite elbow almost touches the knee. Repeat for the desired number of reps.
WE ALL KNOW ROMANCE DOESN’T ALWAYS TRIUMPH. BUT FIVE BERGEN COUPLES SHARE ACCOUNTS OF WHEN, FOR THEM, IT DID.
Perhaps it’s being in the right place at the right time—and maybe in the right mood. Conceivably it’s about being “ready”—or does the universe have a plan for each of us? In any case, the month of Valentine’s Day is an annual invitation to reflect on love and how we found it, even if that finding process involved some waiting, a missed bus or the wrong restaurant. Here, five Bergen couples tell their real-life stories of persistence, hesitation, uncertainty, luck—and love triumphant.
“I met Vicki on July 11, 2006, my second day at a new job with Herman Miller in New York. It was around 3:30 p.m., and after hours of meeting new colleagues, someone introduced me to her. She spun around, said a quick hello, flashed a bright smile and these unbelievable blue eyes, and rushed off to an appointment—all 4’11” of her, moving like a burst of pure energy. I went home to my roommate that night and said, ‘I just met the woman I’m going to marry. If she’d say yes, I would do it today.’
“The next day, some new coworkers invited me to a bar. It wasn’t my scene—I didn’t drink, and I usually went straight to the gym—but I asked who would be there. When they mentioned Vicki, suddenly the bar sounded like a great idea. She walked in late (a usual occurrence, I have come to learn) with a date. But the way she leaned into our conversation, her body language, her curiosity—I thought, ‘Maybe I actually have a chance here.’
“Nothing happened that night. But the following week, our team traveled to Toronto for a conference, and I knew this was my moment. That Tuesday evening, the company hosted an event at Casa Loma, the famous castle. I got there early, learned the layout, found the gardens, the drinks, the entrances—all so I could welcome her like I knew the place by heart. When Vicki and a group of colleagues arrived, I greeted them, asked who wanted a drink, and her hand went straight up. That entire night, we talked, laughed, explored the castle and completely lost track of time. We even missed the group bus back and shared a taxi—though she had the driver drop me off early so we wouldn’t be ‘seen together.’ We were colleagues, and we were also 12 years apart—she was 39, I was 27—and I wasn’t sure what the rulebook was for whatever this thing was quickly (and hopefully) becoming.

“The next night—one week since our introduction—was our formal awards dinner. We saved seats for each other, and when the wine stopped being served, I told her I’d find her a glass at the bar outside. There was a piano nearby, and I played
a little for her. Then we played pool. We went back to my room, where I showed her a small book of poetry and photography I had made. Nothing else happened; it was two people connecting. Eventually she drifted off to sleep in my arms. I carried her to bed, tucked her in and we slept.
“The next day, at the airport heading home to New York, she pulled back a bit—unsure if this could or should really be anything. I said, ‘Just give me one shot. Let me come to your place tomorrow and cook
you dinner.’ She said yes. And we never stopped dating after that meal. We married in July 2008, moved to Glen Rock in September and welcomed our first and only child in December of the same year. Now—19 years since that fateful summer Tuesday introduction at 1177 Sixth Ave.—we’re still here, raising our son and our Labradoodle, still choosing each other every day. It’s not quite a fairy tale, but it’s our version of happily ever after.”

“I met my husband-to-be on my 18th birthday. I was living in Rockland County, N.Y., at the time, and he was in Glen Rock. My best friends and I went out to celebrate, but we had directions to the wrong restaurant in Paramus. We were in the parking lot when I realized we were not at the right restaurant. The timing, however, was right—Harris was there too! I approached him first to get directions to our original destination, but it just made sense to stay. At the end of the night, we talked and said goodbye, and he asked for my phone number. He called me, and we eventually went on a date. He had such a great sense of humor, a Corvette and he was very cute! We dated for a year before he proposed to me. We now have two grown children and five grandchildren. Harris and I have been returning to the restaurant where we met, El Cid in Paramus, every year on our anniversary. We just celebrated our 49th year together in October. He is the love of my life.”

“We both attended Clarkstown North High School in Rockland County, N.Y. I was a year older than Mike, and we were best friends. He was hopelessly in love with me, but I just didn’t think of him that way. We eventually lost touch with one another when we left for college, but we reconnected on Facebook in 2008. About four years later, I reached out to Mike when his mother passed away, and we would meet up shortly after. Mike was in an unhappy marriage at the time and soon separated from his wife. Eventually, we went on a real date to AOC East in the West Village. (We loved it and made it a tradition to go back once a year.)
“Once we started dating, time went fast, and before I knew it, Mike was slowly moving bathing suits and other random items into my apartment. It was not long before I had to dedicate closet space. I had designed my closet for handbags and shoes, so when I sacrificed some space, that’s when I knew he was the one. He proposed to me on the steps of our high school, where it all began, and we got married in September 2017. The thing I love about our relationship is that we truly enjoy each other’s company. As my father-in-law always reminds us, you have to really like the person you are with. And that’s true for us.”

“I was single when a friend and I stopped at Waterloo Sue’s in Hackensack, a restaurant/bar. As we walked in, I noticed two girls near the bar ordering food, and I immediately was attracted to one of them. They were standing next to a chalkboard that had food specials, and she started erasing numbers from one of the items: She made a $29.95 dish into $9.95, and I started to laugh. We went over and started to talk to the girls, and I found out her name was Victoria and she owned a title company in Hackensack.
“The next day, I started calling all the title companies asking for a Victoria until I final found her. I told her I liked her and wanted to ask her out, but she declined, saying that her friend actually liked me. Through my connections, I found out where she lived and showed up at her home. I told her we needed to talk, and we went out for coffee. We laughed a lot, and afterward she realized she had to talk to her girlfriend because she finally wanted to go out with me. Victoria’s friend said OK, adding that she didn’t like me much anyway because I didn’t read enough. [Laughs.] My very beautiful wife Victoria and I have been together for 24 years and married for the past 21.”

“I met Russell 11 years ago on a dating site. I was newly separated and tired of people trying to connect with me, so I decided to search myself. I scrolled through the site and found Russell, who was already divorced. I had certain criteria that my match had to meet, and he checked all the boxes. He had his own checklist, which I apparently passed as well. We messaged briefly online and then we spoke on the phone and he asked me out. I lived in Teaneck, and he lived in Leonia, so he suggested we meet at the cocktail lounge at the Glenpointe Marriott, which was halfway between us.
“I can’t describe it, but we felt so comfortable with each other right away. It truly was special. We just recreated our first date exactly 11 years later (on Nov. 22, 2026). We even sat in the same booth! We got married Jan. 21, 2021, in our apartment. It was in the middle of COVID, with two other couples wearing face shields/masks on the night before Russell was going for pre-op testing for open-heart surgery the following week—but that’s a story for another time! We are now happily married, making memories together and making each other laugh—a lot!”

IT’S
THE ROMANTIC
PULL THAT MAKES YOU SAY “I DO,” BUT IT’S MUCH MORE BESIDES. HERE’S WHAT LOVE, IN ALL ITS VARIETY AND SPLENDOR, LOOKS LIKE AROUND BERGEN COUNTY.
People have been trying to define love forever. They say it makes the world go round, that it’s blind, that it’s all you need—and that it means never having to say…well, you know the rest. The truth is, language keeps circling love because it can never quite pin it down. Pictures may fall short too, but sometimes an image can come wonderfully close.
Valentine’s Day, with all its hearts and candy boxes, spotlights romantic love. But that’s only one piece of a much bigger picture. Love shows up everywhere if you’re paying attention. Here in Bergen County, residents express it daily—for their children and parents, their friends and neighbors, their pets and their community. Captured and shared on Instagram, these moments offer small, poignant glimpses of love in its many forms.

Perfect weather, crisp outfits and endless energy made the Corallo family’s fall photo shoot smooth and special. “Taking this photo brought me so much joy,” photographer Brielle Hassa says. She adds: “The family’s laughter and connection were infectious, and I was laughing right along with them. The two brothers were full of wild, energetic play, wrapped up in the kind of love only siblings share. Capturing these genuine, joyful moments is what I love most about photographing families, and preserving these memories allows them to hold onto the love and laughter of this season of life forever. There is nothing more beautiful than the love of a family!”

OH, BROTHER!
The Ulson household has been filled with brotherly love since Mason joined the Old Tappan family last year. Here, 1-year-old Mason gets a helping hand from his 3-year-old brother, Daniel, who was given the “job” of feeding him from a bottle prepared by their mother. “When your mom gives it to you, you listen,” says mother Layna Lee. Paying homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country, members of Alpine’s Bravest look on during the borough’s annual Memorial Day program. “Moments like Memorial Day and town parades offer a unique blend of community gathering and building, a time to be festive with neighbors and friends and a time to pause to recognize the heroism and sacrifice of men and women in Bergen and around the country,” says Rabbi David-Seth Kirshner, who photographed the event and offered an invocation. “These people who gave in service—and some in sacrifice for our freedoms and gifts we too often take for granted—are heroes who are never forgotten. That day is one of many that recognize it.” Photo by @dsk.photographs.

Who doesn’t love a parade? While snapping images at Glen Rock’s annual Fourth of July celebration, photographer Monika Eisenbart captured this patriotic group making its way through the parade route in the back of a historic pickup truck. “Every year my friend Tina, who’s in the back of the truck, and her husband participate in that parade, and they always have some kids in the back as well,” says Eisenbart. “When I saw them driving by, I immediately stepped on the street to grab that sweet moment. We love our little town. Fourth of July brings everyone together, and we can celebrate and cheer on our friends.”Photo by @itsmonikae.

It’s always good to know whom to turn to for affection, and here’s where the company of a four-legged friend circles us back to “Love of Family.” On any given day at their Ridgewood home, Sean M. Lynch-Littlejohn finds warmth in his husband, Brendan, and their lovable cat, Bob. “It was just a lovely afternoon of family love,” says Lynch-Littlejohn. Photo by @seanmlynchlittlejohn.
Every child dreams of having a pony, and Amanda Callahan is living the fantasy. Photographer Kate Madeline was in Mahwah and captured Callahan embracing her horse 12 Step, aka Twelvie, whom she’s had since the equine was 7 years old. Now 19, the Twelvie is a big part of her owner’s life. “They have grown up together quite a bit,” Madeline says. “They have been through a lot of life together, and she cherishes this horse so much and can’t wait to have kids one day who can love her just as much as she does.”

An Italian family knew the value of a state-of-the-art kitchen for entertaining, but patiently waited for a design they could pronounce bellissimo.

“We’re Italian, so cooking is super important,” the owner of a Closter house explains. “And nothing is better than cooking in a kitchen that’s state-of-the-art.” She’s grateful for the efforts of designer Aparna Vijayan of Ridgewood’s Ulrich Inc. in giving her a kitchen that, as she says, “inspires you to cook.”
This owner has a ready answer why, when she and her spouse bought their six-bedroom, farmhouse-style home, they overlooked the kitchen’s imperfections. “I absolutely love nature,” she says, “and in this town there really isn’t much land with a decent amount of yard space.”
Already in love with life in Closter, the couple with two school-aged kids didn’t want to change ZIP codes. Turns out they didn’t have to, with a rare find on two acres. They snatched it up in 2017 and targeted the rustic,
This Closter home’s long-awaited renovation combines drama—all eyes on the stone-and-marble hearth—with enhanced functionality. The designer’s new layout ends congestion and adds a foot of island space.

farmhouse-style kitchen for termination—one day.
“I knew in time we would do the kitchen, amongst other things,” says the homeowner. Its flaws were all cosmetic, she thought. But what she gained from Vijayan’s fresh perspective was more than a fresh style. The designer created additional space within the kitchen’s framework and provided a modern, even elegant, twist on country style.
It was quite a challenge, Vijayan recalls, to cut a new doorway and new steps to the dining room. Yet the effort improved the flow and ended a bottleneck to the left of the range where guests would pass from dining room to kitchen.
Besides the wow-worthy arch, the new doorway supports a family-friendly layout. This means the kitchen can finally use its large footprint to offer abbondante entertainment space. “Now, during the holidays if they have more people, it doesn’t feel closed in,” Vijayan says.
The designer also seized underutilized space in the breakfast zone, extending kitchen cabinets and an island toward the party-sized black table so that “now the whole room reads as one room.” That meant reining in the barrel-vault ceiling that delineated the space and made two side walls largely unusable, Vijayan explains. Further cohesiveness comes from the two-tone finish of gold and black lighting (Visual Comfort) visually connecting island and table.
Always dramatic with its arched wall of windows, the breakfast area now reveals a practical side—a coffee bar/beverage station, pantry and appliance garage, while the island boasts an extra foot of space.
“I tried to bring in a lot of classic details,” Vijayan adds. The color scheme, for example, is classic—a distressed finish, cottage black for the island and Dove white for the perimeter by North American Cabinetry, all custom, with honey bronze hardware.
“Also, with dogs and young kids, everything had to be low-

maintenance,” she recalls. No problem with the quartz counters from Primo by Unique Flooring America—they only mimic Calacatta marble. Ditto for easy-care porcelain floors by Vista with the look of chevron-pattern bleached wood. Goodbye, terracotta tile!
There’s not just one focal point in this kitchen, but several, as Vijayan endeavored to deliver drama at every angle. The wife’s delight is the stone hearth arched over a 48-inch Wolf range and grill, which combines a Calacatta-marble, picket mosaic with Ashland tumbled dimensional stone. Marble niche shelving on two sides of the hearth keeps spices handy.
“The old kitchen had a mantel-style hood,” says Vijayan, explaining that her clients “liked the idea of a hearth.” The wife, she says, “likes textures, and there’s stonework on the outside of the house. The rest of the kitchen has traditional subway tile from Boston Art in a two-by-nine pattern, slightly more modern.”
Another focal point lies opposite the dining-room entrance: the armoire-like Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, which Vijayan centered with that doorway for balance.
Though the home is not rustic in the extreme, flavor is provided by country details such as the dual Kohler farmhouse sinks, each with brushed gold faucets by Waterstone. Inspired by chicken wire, display cabinets are topped with crimped, woven-wire grille in satin brass from Architectural Products by Outwater. Texture derives from floating shelves with African wenge and beadboard.
In a culture known for delizioso (pizza, pasta and pastries are only the start), this reimagined kitchen is now rightful king of the castle, where nothing clouds saying mangia (and salute!) with family.
“I’m really happy with how they finished this,” says the homeowner. “Even the staff at Ulrich who came here and worked. It was like having family every morning.”

The kitchen and breakfast areas now work together as one room with newfound space for both guests and amenities, such as a coffee station. (It wouldn’t be breakfast without it.)

A winter gathering inspired by alpine charm creates an atmosphere that’s warm, elegant and delightfully unhurried.
Winter has a way of sharpening the appetite for gathering, and a mountain resort offers an irresistible cue for how to do it with style. Picture your Bergen County home on a snow-lit evening with generous tables and interiors that balance crisp freshness with enveloping warmth. An alpineinspired get-together emphasizes texture, glow and contentment. It’s an event where guests arrive ready to kick back with great food, sublime sips and conversation that’s as ingenious as a snowflake.
“Après-ski is a fun but also inherently upscale theme in that it’s based on a vacation,” says Lauren Simon, founder of Mahwah-based Little Pink Bow Parties. “The theme lends itself to the guest (and host) feeling like they’ve escaped into a winter getaway. The trick is to make sure you lean into whatever theme you choose and really transform the space.”
Entertaining expert Stephanie Nass would agree. As revealed in her latest book Swing By: Entertaining Recipes and the New Art of Gathering (Rizzoli New York, 2024), she transformed a space and brought this theme to life, adorning tables with moss coverings and evergreen branches while serving hearty food and drink. With thoughtful décor and an exciting menu to boot, an alpine soirée is a spirited alternative to the usual winter party, one that invites everyone to feel both sophisticated and relaxed.

“Inspired by an appetizer of the same name from an iconic 1980s New York haunt, The Quilted Giraffe, this version is quicker to prepare and gluten free” says Nass. “My cousin told me each morsel was $50 apiece in 1990; the price is more reasonable when you make them yourself. The decadence here is in the quality of ingredients, which are nice to splurge on, if possible, for a special occasion. While the caviar is optional, it adds an extra zhuzh to the dish.”
I N G R E D I E N T S
2 ripe avocados, halved, pitted and peeled
1 tsp. lemon juice, freshly squeezed
1 tsp. kosher salt
8 slices smoked salmon (about 16 oz.)
8 whole chives
2 oz. caviar, optional
Makes 8 parcels; serves 8
D I R E C T I O N S
In a small bowl, mash the avocado with the lemon juice and salt.
Lay out the slices of smoked salmon on a work surface. Place a dollop of mashed avocado in the center of each slice.
Gather the edges of the salmon slice together, so you can form a ruffle at the top of the avocado dollop. Tie the chive around the ruffle to secure the purse. Place a dollop of caviar in the top of the ruffle, if using.

“For an alpine-inspired party, mix and match wood elements with cooler tones to bring in an elegant factor. Also consider a menu that focuses on small bites, which plays into a more cocktail-like vibe. A charcuterie table-lay would also work here, as it plays into the coziness of winter, but is playful and keeps the guests mingling. For cocktails, lean into the après-ski theme and have fun with it! Think hot toddies and cranberry Moscow mules.”

“In my family, we have a tradition of cooking duck for special occasions,” Nass says. “This began with my grandmother’s legendary roast duck. Full credit for this recipe, however, belongs to my mother, who is the master of family holidays, from the décor to dishes. The duck here is cooked in the fat rendered from the legs, so it is less fatty than a traditional confit. This fall-off-the-bone-tender duck delights even the most jaded of duck eaters. I know it because people take second helpings— and sometimes even thirds, so scale up the recipe based on your audience.”
I N G R E D I E N T S
8 duck legs
2 Tbs. kosher salt
2½ Tbs. ground coriander
Mom’s Dry Rub (1 tsp. each of dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, freshly ground black pepper, freshly ground pink pepper, dried parsley, sweet paprika, dried orange peel)
cloves from 2 heads garlic, peeled
D I R E C T I O N S
Preheat the oven to 250°F. In a small bowl, mix the salt, coriander and Mom’s Dry Rub. Carefully poke the duck skin and all fat pockets with a sharp knife, but do not puncture the meat itself. Rub the seasoning all over the duck legs.
Place the duck legs in a Dutch oven, skin side down, with the garlic cloves and 2 tablespoons water. Cover and transfer to the oven.
After 2 hours, use tongs to gently flip the legs. Return, covered, to the oven. After another 2 hours, check the legs. If tender, the meat should be easily pierced with a paring knife. If not, return to the oven and check on them every 10 minutes until they are done. Transfer the duck legs to a plate.
To save the fat, strain the remaining contents of the Dutch oven through a finemesh sieve into a bowl.
To serve the duck legs same-day: Place the legs on a baking sheet, skin side up. Roast in the oven at 450°F for 20 minutes, until the skin is caramel brown and crisped. Brush the reserved duck fat on the legs when they come out of the oven.
To serve within 1 month: Let the duck legs and duck fat cool. Place the duck legs in an airtight container and pour the duck fat over them. The legs should be completely submerged. Refrigerate for up to 1 month. When ready to cook, gently remove the legs from the hardened duck fat, place on a baking sheet and roast in a 450°F oven, skin side up, for 20 minutes.
Serve the duck with any or all of the following: sour cherry jam, roasted fingerling potatoes, kale sautéed in rendered duck fat, roasted cipollini onions, chestnuts and cornbread.

Serves 8
“This open-faced apple dessert is what I would generally call a no-recipe recipe,” says Nass. “Much of the beauty here derives from the arrangement of the apples, so take extra care to slice them neatly. You can also mix different colored apples, so the skins offer pretty contrast. I always think Honeycrisp are the most delicious, though. If you are short on time, storebought pie dough can be used.”

Make the pie dough: If using store-bought pie dough, skip this step. To make the dough, combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Then incorporate the butter with a pastry cutter or fork until little balls form. Slowly add the cold water and mix until a large ball of smooth dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 1 week.
Once ready to use, sprinkle a clean surface with flour. Roll out the pie dough to 1⁄8 inch thick to form a circular shape. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Make the filling and assemble: Preheat the oven to 400°F.
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, kosher salt and lemon juice. Place the groups of apples, peel side up, on the rolled-out dough, leaving about a 1-inch border of dough. Sprinkle the apples with the sugar-cinnamon mixture.
Fold the edges of the pie dough toward the apple slices. Brush the folded edges with the beaten egg.
Bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly, about 45 minutes.
Brush caramel sauce all over the apples. Bake another 2 minutes.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream—or the German way, mit Schlag (with whipped cream).
Five Northeast places promise to show off the season at its most scenic.
For some travelers, winter is something to flee, and that’s fine. But it can also be something to savor. Crisp air, sunlight reflecting off ice, snow garbing trees and houses—even the joy of huddling by a fireplace or furnace to warm up with a cup of hot cocoa—these can be memory makers just as surely as any tanningoil-covered sojourn on a baking beach. Finding the right destination, of course, is key. So here are five towns ready to strut their stuff in the cold, places where the energy level is high even when the thermometer reading is low:

Nestled on the banks of the Delaware, Frenchtown is only a bridge away from Bucks County, Pennsylvania (the Uhlerstown–Frenchtown Bridge, to be specific; it includes a pedestrian walking path and is an attraction in its own right). Cozy and quaint with a bustling arts community, Frenchtown’s about an hour’s drive from Bergen.
What to do. For stunning views of frozen streams, lakes and the river, stop by the Frenchtown Preserve, a 150-acre treasure trove of flat walking paths and breathtaking sights. Not crazy about the woods? Wander downtown and see gorgeous Victorian architecture resplendent in snow (and lit by string lights crisscrossing the streets, creating a softly glowing fairyland). Art lovers can stop by top gallery space ArtYard or the Don Hector Glass Studio for eye-popping stained glass. (ArtYard’s currently displaying abstracts by Bernadette Simone; those visiting later in the month will see a curated exhibit of still lifes from dozens of artists and the historic photographs of Lora Webb Nichols.) Plus, shop curated boutiques featuring everything from books to menswear to home goods.
Where to eat. At the Frenchtown Café you can enjoy innovative takes on American classics (espresso mocha and orange ricotta pancakes, for instance). Something more high-end? Stop by Chez Daniel for French dining and first-class service, with menu offerings such as salmon meunière and a 12-ounce, dry-aged pork chop Normandy. More info: frenchtownalive.com

An hour and a half from Bergen by car, this second-largest city in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley teems with colonial and industrial history, and in winter it’s dressed in its best. There are historic buildings blanketed in snow, walkable landmarks and plenty of cafes and shops just waiting for you to duck inside, warm up and explore. What to do. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Moravian Church Settlements in Bethlehem are must-see. Explore 10 acres of original, 18th-century buildings, inspired by the church’s concept of “an ideal city.” Around Valentine’s Day, the Bethlehem Carriage Company offers horse-drawn carriage rides through the city so you and your sweetheart can take in the views in style. Downtown teems with every kind of shopping, from small artisans (Kaleidoscope Collective showcases women-created crafts) to luxury goods (see La Petite Provence for home goods and AM Luxe for style), to spots for the kids (Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop is surefire). Where to eat. A stunning dining room sets the bar high at 1741 on the Terrace in the Historic Hotel Bethlehem—arched, floor-to-ceiling windows, mosaic floors and heavy, dark wood chairs—but the menu meets that challenge. Prince Edward Island mussels, mushroom risotto and filet mignon are among options here. Or try the Flying Egg, a boutique diner with a madefrom-scratch menu that features honey and apple ricotta toast and five variations of eggs Benedict. More info: visithistoricbethlehem.com

How often does a town smaller than Mahwah make it into world history texts? In this New Hampshire city, the 1905 treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War was signed (winning President Teddy Roosevelt the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the deal). About four hours from Bergen, Portsmouth has a vibe of New England coastal charm with an effortless modern flair, as the Atlantic Ocean and the Piscataqua River create a daily ode to maritime heritage and natural beauty. You’ll find seaside views, historic buildings and a fantastic dining scene. What to do. Your first stop should be the Strawbery (yes, that’s the spelling!) Banke Museum’s Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond, an outdoor skating venue that marries the traditional outdoor New England experience with all the comforts, accessibilities and conveniences of a modern indoor rink. Drop by for public skating, pickup pond hockey and immaculate winter scenery—the ice, tucked between square colonial buildings, is lit by imitation lantern light. Strawbery Banke itself is an indoor/ outdoor history museum—wander the buildings to your heart’s content. And the eminently walkable city puts every delight at your fingertips. Pro tip: make sure you take in Bow and Ceres Streets for icy views of the working harbor and tugboats. Where to eat. There are more than 250 restaurants in Portsmouth—impressive for a city with a population just over 22,000—so there’s no reason to leave hungry. Want cozy coffee and pastries? Elephantine Bakery is a must, with buttery, meltin-your-mouth chocolate almond croissants being many locals’ go-to. Or head over to Cava Tapas and Wine Bar for a seasonally updating menu, dozens of wine options and fun craft cocktails. More info: goportsmouthnh.com

This small island is a classic summer destination, but it would be folly to write it off in winter. Decreased crowds, beautiful, snow-dusted ocean views and year-round pleasures such as cideries and views of lovely lighthouses await you here. The roughly six-and-a-half-hour trip here from Bergen includes a ferry ride. What to do. The pace of a Nantucket winter is slow and relaxing—exhale, step back and take advantage of it. Take a quiet stroll on the beaches, which will likely be close to empty. Winter sunrises and sunsets over the ocean are particularly stunning here. (Winter temperatures tend to hover in the 30s and 40s in winter, but plan for wind chill.) Wander the historic downtown, which looks plucked from the pages of a storybook. Then head to Nantucket’s three famous lighthouses: Brant Point, Great Point and Sankaty Head. If you catch them under a dusting of snow, it’s pure magic. Afterward, stop by the Whaling Museum, open year-round, and see the 40-foot sperm whale skeleton. Where to eat. If you want small plates, global cuisine and an exclusive, high-end feel, you want The Nautilus, where the menu includes cured steelhead trout tartare and blistered shishito peppers, and the spirit list is extensive. Something more casual? At local favorite B-ACK Yard BBQ the meat is freshly smoked and everything is warm, comforting and delicious.

In warmer months, Acadia National Park calls travelers here with promises of picturesque, rocky beaches and glacier-carved peaks, including Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast. In winter you can take in those sights painted in high-contrast black and white with far fewer crowds, while enjoying the town’s amazing hospitality. It’s about eight hours from Bergen.
What to do. The national park is Bar Harbor’s biggest attraction for good reason, and that doesn’t stop just because the season changes. Its 45 miles of carriage roads are perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and there are 27 miles of snowmobile routes, ice fishing and views that will steal your breath away. (The park system suggests scenic drives on its website; see nps.gov.) The streets are a treasure trove of small shops to explore and culture to engage with: Try the Abbe Museum, Maine’s only Smithsonian affiliate, for a showcase of Wabanaki Nations’ stories and art. Where to eat. This town is known for fresh seafood, and you’ll want to sample the chowder here on a cold day. Try the Thirsty Whale Tavern for that, plus other seafood favorites (lobster rolls, haddock and fried clams) and fantastic happy-hour options. Or try the Side Street Café for burgers, cocktails, mocktails and legendary shrimp mac n’ cheese.

These recipes wrap bold flavors into unforgettable meals.
Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (around 8 oz. each)
8 slices of Swiss cheese
8 slices of black forest ham (around 5 oz.)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
11/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
1 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil kosher salt black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Use a long sharp knife, cut a large pocket along the length of each chicken breast. Do not cut it in half. Place one slice of cheese and ham inside each chicken breast.
Prepare the breading station. In one shallow bowl, beat together the eggs with some kosher salt and pepper. In another shallow bowl, mix together the flour with some kosher salt and black pepper. In the last shallow bowl, combine the panko, olive oil, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.
Roll the chicken in the flour first, then coat it in the egg, and lastly into the panko mixture. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the juices run clear.
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

“Boost the nutrition of this dish by swapping all-purpose flour for a whole grain option, such as oat flour, which adds fiber and minerals. Pair the chicken with a side of vegetables for a more colorful and balanced meal!”
—Shifra Zuckerman, registered dietitian nutritionist, Healthspan Nutrition with Shifra, Fair Lawn

Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS
For the Breadcrumb Filling
½ cup dried Italian-style breadcrumbs
1 garlic clove, minced
²/³ cup Pecorino Romano cheese, freshly grated ¹/³ cup provolone cheese, freshly grated
2 Tbs. fresh Italian parsley leaves, chopped
1 Tbs. fresh Italian basil, chopped
2 Tbs. olive oil salt, to taste black pepper, freshly ground, For the Braciole
1½ lbs. flank steak salt, to taste black pepper, freshly ground, to taste
4 slices thinly sliced prosciutto
2 Tbs. olive oil
1 cup red wine
4 cups homemade tomato sauce
DIRECTIONS
Make the Breadcrumb Mixture
Stir together the breadcrumbs, garlic, cheese, parsley and basil in a medium bowl until combined. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and season the mixture with salt and pepper. Set aside. Prepare the Braciole
Lay the flank steak flat on a wooden board or clean work surface. Pat the steak dry with paper towels. Place one piece between two sheets of parchment paper. With a rolling pin or meat mallet, pound the meat to flatten it to about 1/4-inch thickness. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the steak to cover the meat. Add slices of prosciutto over the pounded beef and breadcrumb mixture to cover evenly.
Starting at the short end, roll up the steak (like a jelly roll) to seal the filling. Using butcher’s twine, tie the steak roll to secure it (I usually secure it in 4 spots). Cooking the Braciole
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy large ovenproof skillet, or cast-iron pan,

over medium heat. Add the braciole to the pan and cook until browned on all sides, about 8 minutes.
Add the wine to the pan and scrape all the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring it to a boil for about 1 minute. Stir in the prepared tomato sauce. Cover partially with foil or an oven-safe lid, and bake until the meat is almost tender. Baste the braciole with the sauce every 30 minutes.
After 1 hour, uncover and continue baking until the meat is tender, about 30 minutes longer. The total cooking time should be about 90 minutes total. You can braise the meat for up to 3 hours. If cooking longer, ensure the sauce doesn’t reduce too much, and add a little beef broth if needed.
Let the braciole rest for 15 minutes. Remove the twine from the braciole. Remove the braciole from the sauce. Cut the braciole crosswise and diagonally into ½-inch-thick slices using a large sharp knife. Transfer the slices to plates. Spoon the sauce over and serve. Enjoy with ciabatta bread to soak up the sauce.
“To boost nutrition and fiber, skip the breadcrumbs and load the filling of this dish with extra parsley and basil. You can also add finely diced vegetables such as spinach, mushrooms or sautéed onions.”
—Lauren Torrisi-Gorra, registered dietitian nutritionist, Forme Nutrition, Franklin Lakes

What inspired you to create Smiles by Bergen Dental and what sets your practice apart from others?
Dr. Liany Farinas-Han is the founder of Smiles by Bergen Dental, a practice dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care through a blend of artistry, compassion, and technical expertise. An accomplished classical concert pianist, she graduated from The Juilliard School with a full scholarship supported by the Bill Millennium Scholarship. She also holds a Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Recognized as one of America’s Best Young Dentists in 2020 by Edge Magazine’s 40 Under 40, Dr. Farinas-Han combines her artistic talents with modern technology to achieve outstanding results. Her practice offers a full range of dental services — from preventive care to cosmetic, restorative, and implant dentistry — ensuring comprehensive care for patients of all ages. Smiles by Bergen Dental emphasizes a strong, collaborative team atmosphere and continuous training to provide unmatched dental care across three locations in Midland Park, Emerson, and Dumont. The office’s commitment to excellence is reflected in glowing reviews and high praise from patients.

TO HELP YOU FIND GREAT DENTAL CARE, Bergen magazine commissioned Professional Research Services (PRS) of Troy, Michigan to conduct a peer-review survey of hundreds of practicing and active dentists across the county. Dentists were asked to choose which of their peers they consider the very best, across seven different practice areas—endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics.
All the final honorees were fact-checked with the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System. The highest vote getters within each specialty who are in good standing with the state are included here in the 2026 “Bergen County’s Top Dentists” list.
There are many other good dentists practicing in Bergen County who may not be included on this list; we recommend that you consider “Bergen County’s Top Dentists” and other resources before scheduling your next dental procedure.

Dr. Dayna Cassandra Cosmetic Dentistry 351 Evelyn St., Paramus, NJ 07652 | 201.261.7645 | www.cosmeticdentistofparamus.com
FOR OVER 20 YEARS, BUILDING TRUSTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PATIENTS has been the cornerstone of Dr. Dayna Cassandra and Dr. Shari Klein’s mission. They take a personalized approach to patient care and treatment planning as they would if a patient was part of their own family. The doctors and their team work together to provide outstanding, comforting, and honest experiences for the people of Bergen County and beyond. “Our goal is to provide an exceptional experience that exceeds an individual’s expectations,” Dr. Cassandra says.
Dental disease is an inflammatory process that has been linked to so many other diseases and conditions that affect our overall health and wellness. “To have the best dental health, a person would want to have a thorough exam and diagnostic records to create a plan specific to their own needs, desires, and health goals,” Dr. Cassandra explains.
Dr. Cassandra’s passion for dentistry and commitment to her profession are clear as she is actively involved as key opinion leader for Solventum and spent years as an assistant clinical professor at New York University’s Rosenthal Institute, Center for Advanced Aesthetics.
Dr. Klein’s distinguished career as a periodontist includes a background in nutrition and more than two decades of teaching experience.
The practice continues to evolve and become equipped with advanced, cutting-edge clinical technology so that it meets the needs of patients. It offers same-day dentistry, as well as 3D technologies to provide digital health scans, thorough radiographic imaging, and digital smile design for comprehensive treatment planning.
This year, in alignment with their Wellness forward approach to Orofacial rejuvenation, they added Em-Face. This technology has been used for years in medicine and now has received FDA clearance in dentistry. The machine is effective in the treatment of TMD and also has applications to strengthen muscle and connective tissue in the face, both of which contribute to the longevity of existing dentition, as well as the rehabilitated smiles that the team delivers. “The added benefit?” Dr. Cassandra says. “A younger-looking, better-feeling, rejuvenated you!”

DR. MICHAEL KLOTZ is among the select group of board-certified prosthodontists nationwide. He focuses on implant, aesthetic, and reconstructive dentistry with an emphasis on compassionate care, personal patient connection, and the thoughtful use of the most advanced digital dental technology available. Together with his dedicated team, Dr. Klotz is deeply committed to exceptional service, patient comfort, and consistently delivering outstanding clinical results.
Through his extensive training and advanced technology, Dr. Klotz’s patients benefit from visits that are smoother, more efficient, and notably more comfortable. His practice utilizes 3D cone beam imaging for precise visualization of teeth and jaws, 3D printing for accurate fabrication of dental models and restorations, and 3D intraoral scanning to replace traditional impressions. An in-office dental laboratory provides Dr. Klotz with two key benefits. First, it allows meticulous quality control of highly natural, functional restorations. Second, restorations can often be completed with greater convenience and timeliness.
After earning his Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree (D.M.D) at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now known as Rutgers School of Dental Medicine), Dr. Klotz pursued advanced education in Prosthodontics, the specialty dedicated to dental
implants, crowns, bridges, veneers, and dentures. He was selected for a competitive three-year Prosthodontics residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center. During his postgraduate training, he earned a Master’s Degree in Dental Science (M.Dent.Sc), focusing his research on dental implant biomechanics. Dr. Klotz further refined his expertise with a fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, caring for patients with complex head and neck cancer needs. At MSKCC, he achieved board certification in Prosthodontics, the specialty’s highest distinction. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, lectured nationally, and remains active in numerous dental organizations. Currently, he serves as the Secretary of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, internationally known as one of the most prestigious prosthodontics organizations.
While Dr. Klotz’s practice centers on prosthodontics, they also provide comprehensive care for patients of all ages. “I chose Prosthodontics to help patients with complex dental challenges while fulfilling my passion for restoring comfort, confidence, and function,” says Dr. Klotz. His greatest reward is delivering transformative dentistry and building trusted, long-term relationships with patients, many of whom have remained with his practice for decades. SAVING TEETH FOR OVER 30 YEARS makes NJ Root Canal the go-to practice for patients of all ages. Established in 1990, Dr. Brian Trava, Dr. SuJean Oh, Dr. Alison Petix, Dr. Seung Shon and Dr. James Yang have all received recognition as top doctors in the field of endodontics. The extra two-year specialty degree focuses on root canal specifically, diagnosing pain, tooth trauma and saving teeth that were headed for removal.
NJ Root Canal utilizes 3D imaging, surgical microscopes and researchbased techniques to detect extra roots and infections not seen by older traditional methods. With higher success for saving teeth, the ADA estimates an average of $5,000 to replace an extracted tooth. Before that tooth is removed, it doesn’t hurt to get a second written opinion.
The practice has published articles in I.V sedation for Special need patients, 3D imaging and diagnosing complicated dental issues. Dr. Trava
has lectured across the country addressing sports trauma in children and the use of stem cell therapy from having premature root canal. Tooth trauma can have long-term complications from an esthetic, financial and legal perspective if not handled properly the very first time.
Born and raised locally, Dr. Trava graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey followed by a two-year postdoctoral degree in Endodontics, while also serving as assistant clinical professor. All our doctors have post-doctoral degrees and many interests. Dr. Shon is an accomplished artist, Dr. Oh has additional awards from Columbia University, Dr. Petix treats many of our Vets and Dr. Yang is a Diplomat of Endodontrics.

AS THE OLD WISE PROVERB SAYS, “Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Dr. Michael Duong is one of those lucky individuals to realize the profession that perfectly aligns with his strengths. His keen visual perception, mastery of science and excellent diagnostic skills, made orthodontics a no brainer.
Dr. Duong’s proudest accomplishment of his career is building his own practice. “I love coming to work. My team is super energetic, warm and caring. The patients we care for and the families we get to know are the epitome of each day,” says Dr. Duong. “Listening to the kid’s stories and watching them grow into beautiful adults is heartening. I treat patients of all ages and I take pride in knowing that they acquire a boost of confidence when facing the world with a beautiful smile.”
With technology constantly evolving, Dr. Duong teaches to stay on the cutting edge. He is an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University
where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery and orthodontic specialty training.
A stickler for making sure that treatment is working right and moving along as quickly as possible, Dr. Duong made the conscious decision to practice solo. Since 2010, when he first opened his doors, the practice has been growing. The doors are finally open to Dr. Duong’s new location in the heart of downtown, Ridgewood. Their super new modern office is equipped with the most advanced technology and provides the highest quality of care.
Dr. Duong is a strong believer in giving back to the community at the grassroots level where he can make a direct impact on his patients and their families. He donates to local schools, teams and religious institutions.

DR. FRED PUCCIO IS THE PROUD OWNER OF MIDLAND FAMILY DENTAL CARE, where he leads a modern, patient-focused practice centered on advanced technology and compassionate care. Specializing in dental implants and cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Puccio operates in a fully digital workflow environment, offering cutting-edge treatments for a wide range of dental conditions, including sleep apnea, snoring, TMJ disorders, and periodontal disease. His patient base ranges from children to adults, with associates on staff to handle all restorative procedures.
Dr. Puccio’s philosophy centers on a conservative, holistic approach to dental care. While he emphasizes prevention and minimal intervention, he is also committed to using the most advanced dental technology available when treatment is necessary. His office is equipped with digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, CBCT cone beam 3D imaging, AI-assisted X-ray analysis, dental lasers such as Solea and Waterlase, and the CEREC CAD/ CAM system for one-visit crowns and restorations. Additional innovations include the iTero Invisalign scanner, 3D printing for custom restorations and mouth guards, guided implant dentistry, and digital smile design. For anxious patients, the practice offers sedation and anesthesia options to ensure comfort during treatment.
Dr. Puccio is pleased to offer Solea Sleep, a new laser therapy that provides relief for snoring. A 10-minute, one time treatment, Solea gently tightens tissue in the soft palate, reducing vibrations that cause snoring.
What sets Midland Family Dental Care apart is its unique blend of hightech dentistry and a caring, patient-first approach. Dr. Puccio finds deep fulfillment in transforming smiles with natural-looking porcelain veneers and believes that new technologies such as AI, CAD/CAM, CBCT, and lasers have revolutionized the field. Looking ahead, he sees robotics playing a significant role in the future of dentistry.
Dr. Puccio attended New York University as an undergraduate, as well as NYU’s College of Dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Puccio is an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at New York University College of Dentistry in the Honors Aesthetic Clinic, where he relays his extensive knowledge of new dental digital technology and how it applies to cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Puccio’s commitment to innovation and personalized care continues to make Midland Family Dental Care a leader in the field for over 30 years!

DR. SARAYDARIAN AND HIS ASSOCIATES, DR. JENNA EARNHARDT AND DR. CLAYTON JUDY, strive to treat their patients with true comprehensive care. This has been accomplished through the incorporation of four specialists to the practice, Dr. Caroline Ahn in Endodontics, Dr. Sung Min Lee in Periodontics, Dr. Ani Merjian in Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr. Susan in Orthodontics. The enhanced scope of dental services available to patients here has made for not only an easier deliverance of care, but receipt of care as well. As a practice, the primary commitment made by all of the staff is to provide the highest quality of service to patients.
According to Dr. Saraydarian, “Honesty, integrity and quality treatment have been the pillars of my practice since opening in 2004, I consider my patients an extension of my family and I practice with genuine respect, thoughtfulness and sensitivity for each and every one of them. While
diagnosis, treatment plans and care instructions are certainly critical to our time with patients, we always allow room for our patient’s concerns to shape the appointment. We take such pride in our frequent referrals and glowing word-of- mouth endorsements. We wouldn’t be the practice we are today without them.”
With a focus on preventative care, the dentists integrate innovative, state-of-the-art cosmetic and restorative dentistry in a friendly, relaxing environment using the most up-to-date technology. Ultimately, their objective is to establish every patient’s smile on a solid foundation that will promote excellent dental and physical health throughout their lifetime.

FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, BERGEN ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY (BOMS) has been a trusted provider of surgical care for families throughout Bergen County and beyond. As the area’s only doctor-owned oral surgery practice—founded by two pioneering surgeons and built over generations—BOMS has become a true community cornerstone. Many patients treated as children now return as adults, confidently referring friends and family to a practice they have trusted for decades.
With locations in Franklin Lakes, Hackensack, Paramus, and Westwood, each office offers convenient access, free parking, and a consistent, patient-first experience. The newest Paramus location, opened in December, also includes a Med Spa led by Dr. Vincent Novelli, expanding into aesthetic services while reflecting BOMS’ commitment to evolving with patient needs.

SINCE OPENING ITS DOORS IN 2009, Edgewater Pediatric Dentistry has been setting the standard for pediatric dental care in Bergen County. Led by Dr. Rosalie Nguyen, a board-certified pediatric dentist and active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the practice combines advanced technology with a patient-centered approach that puts children and families first.
Dr. Nguyen’s journey into dentistry began in high school, working as a dental assistant and witnessing firsthand how pediatric dentists build long-term relationships with their patients. “I loved seeing how dentists could guide children from infancy through young adulthood,” she explains. “Now, it’s especially rewarding when former patients bring in their own children.”
The practice offers a wide range of services, including minimally invasive treatments like silver diamine fluoride, anesthesia-free laser dentistry, frenectomies, nitrous oxide sedation, and in-office IV sedation. Dr. Nguyen is also affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center, allowing her to provide dental treatment under general anesthesia when necessary. She emphasizes that what sets Edgewater Pediatric Dentistry apart is the focus on prevention, quality of care, and utilizing the best materials and technology available.
One of the practice’s standout features is its integration of cutting-edge AI technology. From an AI receptionist to AI-enhanced dental imaging, the practice ensures parents fully understand their child’s dental needs. “With AI imaging, cavities are clearly highlighted, so parents can see exactly what we see,” Dr. Nguyen says. “It helps build trust and ensures they feel confident about treatment decisions.”
Beyond technology, the office environment is warm and welcoming, featuring iPads, video games, and TVs on the ceilings to keep children entertained. Meticulous attention to sterilization and infection control ensures parents feel secure, while a commitment to treating every child as one of their own defines the practice’s core values.
Edgewater Pediatric Dentistry accepts patients from a few days after birth through young adulthood, including those with special healthcare needs. With complimentary initial exams for children under two and flexible options for families without dental insurance, Dr. Nguyen and her team are dedicated to making high-quality pediatric dental care accessible and stress-free for every family.

Experience dentistry as it should be; advanced, efficient and genuinely caring

FOR OVER TWO DECADES, Dr. Ilya Lipkin has been addressing his patients' smile concerns and goals with compassion and respect. On September 11, 2001, Dr. Lipkin embarked on his career at a practice which he took over a mere two years later. His focus has always been on the health and function of the mouth as well as creating beautiful smiles.
Dr. Lipkin immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1990. Always wanting to be a doctor, he was drawn to the science and artistry of dentistry. It's by more than happenstance that Dr. Lipkin chose to specialize in orthodontics. In his second year of dental school at NYU's College of Dentistry, his professor noticed his teeth were extremely crooked and put a full set of metal braces on him. Dr. Lipkin became fascinated with the life-changing impact and the confidence it bestowed; he wanted to give that gift to others. "Dentistry is my love, but orthodontics is my passion!"
Dr. Lipkin completed his residency in orthodontics at NYU's Department of PostGraduate Orthodontics. Highly trained and specialized in the structure of the chewing system, the jaw joints and in the treatment of
TMJ and airway issues, Dr. Lipkin treats both adults and children. Many of Dr. Lipkin's patients sought him out because they were dissatisfied with their previous orthodontic outcomes; numerous patients coming for treatment and retreatment from across the country and even across the globe.
As an education enthusiast, Dr. Lipkin takes time and great care with every patient to ensure they understand treatment options and procedures. This important communication allows Dr. Lipkin to develop a custom plan that meets his patients' lifestyles and needs.
In the open, bright and cheerful office, Dr. Lipkin's long-time, dedicated staff help patients feel welcome and assured they are in the best possible hands. The aroma of fresh baked cookies and the giant saltwater fishtank full of colorful exotic fish are focal points in helping patients of all ages reduce anxieties and increase relaxation. Dr. Lipkin offers a one-of-a-kind orthodontic experience, employing his extensive knowledge and passion for the proper function of the teeth and a healthy bite to provide smiles that are natural and unique.

FOR MOST PEOPLE, “GOING TO THE DENTIST” means a once-or twice-yearly visit to a general dentist for a checkup and cleaning. Sometimes, however, specialized dental care is needed. For problems such as crooked or crowded teeth, spacing issues or gaps, improper bites, and jaw misalignment, patients should see an orthodontist, a specially trained dentist who focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and jaw irregularities.
According to scores of glowing accolades and five-star reviews from satisfied patients in and around Bergen County, Dr. Margaret Park of Park Orthodontics, which celebrated its 25th year in practice last spring, is the orthodontist of choice. The Freakin Rican brings festive energy and comforting Puerto Rican cuisine to Teaneck.
There’s a time and place for a candlelit, date-night dinner, where portions are precise, plates are artfully arranged and conversation is conducted in hushed tones. Then there are nights when you want the opposite: a restaurant that’s boisterous in the best ways, full of energy and serving food portions so good—and so generous— that sharing becomes optional. The Freakin Rican, Teaneck’s newest Puerto Rican restaurant, fits squarely into that latter category, delivering confidence, flavor and plenty of personality.
The Freakin Rican recently opened its Teaneck location after building a loyal following at its original restaurant in Queens. Already in a festive mood, my girlfriend and I grabbed a table for a mid-December dinner, and it didn’t take long for the restaurant’s energy to match ours.
From the moment we stepped inside, the vibe was unmistakable. The room buzzed with conversation, music and constant movement, creating an atmosphere that felt celebratory without slipping into chaos. Groups gathered around tables, families lingered over meals and couples settled in comfortably—proof that this is a place that works just as well for a night out with friends as it does for a casual date.
While the atmosphere drew us in, the menu made it clear we’d be back. There were so many tempting options that ordering felt like a strategic decision rather than a casual one. We watched other patrons snack on empanadas and chicharrón before settling on a pair of The Freakin Rican’s renowned pasteles. Wrapped in banana leaves and filled with sweet plantain “dough,” stewed pork, olives and pimiento, they resemble tamales but have a personality all their own. Each one was rich, savory and deeply comforting—a dish rooted in tradition and clearly made with care. As former New York Times food editor Pete Wells once wrote after a visit to the Queens location, eating The Freakin Rican’s pasteles is “opening one of the gifts of Puerto Rican cuisine.” That tribute holds true in Teaneck too.
To balance the softness of the pasteles, we added an order of fried yuca. The large wedges (note that yuca fries are a separate menu item)

arrived crisp and golden on the outside, tender on the inside and seasoned just right. They’re the kind of side dish that quietly steals the spotlight— addictive, endlessly snackable and gone far too quickly. Ordering them for the table is essential, though you may regret not claiming your own portion upfront.
It is with main courses, though, that The Freakin Rican fully leans into abundance and bold flavor. The menu spans everything from burgers and sandwiches to classic rice-and-meat platters, but with traditional dishes the kitchen really shines. I opted for the pernil, a slow-roasted pork shoulder that arrived tender enough to fall apart at the fork’s touch. Packed with deep, savory seasoning, each bite was rich and satisfying, making it easy to understand why this dish is a Puerto Rican staple.
My girlfriend chose the trifongo with steak, which proved just as memorable. The trifongo—a hearty mash of green plantain, sweet plantain and yuca—was flavorful and comforting, serving as the perfect base for the well-cooked steak. With these elements together, the dish felt indulgent without being overwhelming, though the portion size did briefly inspire a conversation about whether dessert was still realistic. (It was.)
The debate ended with flan, and it was the right call. Silky smooth and lightly sweet, it delivered a classic finish to an already substantial meal. Simple, satisfying and comforting, it was exactly what we wanted after a feast.
In the end, The Freakin Rican’s Teaneck location lives up to the reputation of its Queens original while carving out its own place in the local dining scene—no small feat, especially considering that it now occupies the former home of the beloved ice cream parlor Bischoff’s. With its high-energy atmosphere, welcoming service and food that delivers big on both flavor and portion size, it’s the kind of restaurant you choose when the goal is to enjoy yourself and eat exceptionally well. Save your whitetablecloth aspirations for another night—this is where you go to find fun on the menu and absolutely no one leaving hungry.

“Ramapo Reservation in Mahwah is one of my go-to spots for nature photography in the county, especially when it snows. This was a sunny morning after an overnight snowfall, and there were already plenty of frozen footsteps. What I love about this shot is that all of the footsteps lead to only one person at the end of the path.”
