Every year Papawai & Kaikōkirikiri Trusts scholarship recipients and their whānau are invited to contribute to the improvement of the whenua through riparian planting on the leased farms and industrial lands that the revenue for the Trust and scholarships come from. This year they met mid-July at Papawai Farm in Greytown. Adorned with hats, coats, gumboots, spades and heaps of enthusiasm, their goal was to plant about 400 native species which they accomplished in under two hours. As well as the smaller natives planted along the waterway there was a grove of larger trees such as kahikatea, rimu, titoki and totara to be planted. Don Bell from Carbon Natural has been associated with the Trusts planting days for many years. He had spot-sprayed the area a few weeks earlier to kill the weeds and

provide a clear space to dig and plant. It was a great morning that ended with a hot drink and home-made baking. It is clear from those that attend the planting days that whànau support the practice of taking care of our environment.

Ko te whenua te waiu mō ngā uri whakatipu The land will provide sustenance for future generations.

Alice Wichman Profile I grew up in Mangakino attending the primary school from age seven and finishing in 1984 as a sixth former. My father moved our family to Mangakino in the mid sixties working on the dams as a construction worker and then later at the Kinleith sawmill. Following Kinleith, my father became one of the resident builders in Mangakino. Growing up, my siblings and I would spend a lot of our weekends and school holidays on his building sites all around the Mangakino farming district. That meant we rode farm bikes, repurposed building materials to play table tennis in woolsheds and annoyed a lot of sheep for farm managers. I left Mangakino at the end of 1984 and completed my schooling in the Bay of Plenty before attending Otago University to study science and accounting.

Ko Alice Wichman toku ingoa

In 1994 after leaving university, I was very lucky to be offered my first real job as Accounts Clerk in the office at Pouàkani 2 Trust. I have always been extremely grateful for the opportunity I was given by the Trust back then because at that time I was very aware that I did not have a lot to offer. I stayed for two years and in that time a lot of learning occurred against a background of much support and patience from those managing and working in all roles for the Trust. Twenty-five years later and like Arnold, I am back! Bigger role, more experience required and still lots of learning ahead. Like the first time, I am still very grateful to be here and I acknowledge that there will be work aplenty in living up to the challenges of my new role as your Financial Controller.

Marae Update Te Rangimarie Well it’s a long time since we have put an article in the Mailer due to Covid-19 locking us all down and everyone losing impetus for a while. Te Rangimarie is a quieter place these days, thanks in part to Covid-19, but winter has also arrived and that makes everyone hunker down and keep warm for a while. The Marae, like all places, went into lockdown but thanks to a couple of generous grants we have managed to survive financially. Church was on lockdown for a few months too so the fellowship at Te Rangimarie was missing as well. We’re open and running again but are still responsibly signing in as we arrive, and choosing to take the chalice or not at the Eucharist. It’s a different world but we are grateful to have come this far reasonably unscathed. We feel for our families across the ditch who have not had such organised leadership and are now finding the going tough. Te Rangimarie has had a group of church rangatahi come in school holidays, about fifty kids in total including ours and a great time was had. Rev. Liz had organised for them to visit the fablab with her son. If you want to impress rangatahi go the technology route!!! It worked. We discovered they also like eating and a great deal of food was consumed. It was a fun time and lovely to see so many young people being involved.

AND YOUR DIVIDEND Do you live in New Zealand? Do you want to pay a lower rate of tax on this year’s dividend payment?

Hurunui-o-Rangi Tù mai ki runga i a Uhi Manuka, Tù mai ki runga i a Parikauiti Titiro whakararo ko te auahi o ngà ahikà e pupu ana Koinei ngà takawaenga koinei ngà papakàinga ò a màtau tìpuna... Hurunui-o-Rangi whànau, hapù and marae wish to give a huge ‘shout out’ to all those from the many communities throughout Aotearoa who gave of their time and energy to take care of and to support us all during the unprecedented time of navigating the changing levels of the Covid-19 pandemic. Hurunui-o-Rangi wishes to convey its special thanks to both Rangitàne Tù Mai Rà Trust and Wairarapa Moana Trust for their generous koha to the marae in support of our Covid-19 recovery.

Our property committee met to decide what was needed and how to proceed and our secretary began contacting professional cleaners to quote for a ‘deep clean and sanitation’ of all surfaces and equipment, internal, external, roofing and gutterings....and now that the clean is finished, what a difference...it’s amazing what a bit of pampering can do! Hurunui-o-Rangi closed its’ doors when the nation moved to alert level 2, 3 and 4. We have all ridden the wave of Covid-19 – where else might it take us?

We contemplated what the best use of these funds might be for our marae and agreed it was time to provide some much needed TLC.

Wairarapa Moana: The Lake and Its People Beginning with Issue 57 of the Mailer we started to bring you short snippets from the book to encourage you to read and increase your knowledge of this taonga. Enjoy!

Chapter 3: The Archaeology of Wairarapa Moana. Written by Christine Barnett.

“…Māori communities lived in the southern Wairarapa throughout the entire period of New Zealand prehistory.” Archaeological sites exist as a result of human interaction with the environment. Consequently, it is vital to understand the environmental history of the area before it is possible to get a clear archaeological picture of preEuropean Màori settlement of Wairarapa Moana.

“The Crown continues to frustrate the process as much as possible as well as continuing their ‘divide and rule tactics’ between WMI and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki Nui-ā-Rua Settlement Trust,” said Chairman, Kingi Smiler. WMI applied to the Waitangi Tribunal for a formal mediation process with the Settlement Trust which was opposed by the Crown and therefore, as a result, declined by the Tribunal, which was disappointing. Notwithstanding, we have approached the Settlement Trust directly to engage in a mediation process in the hope that we can reach an agreement on behalf of our owners as well as all of the whànau of Ngàti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa. “Only by working together will we get a ‘fair and just’ outcome with the Crown to settle all our Treaty Claims.” We will continue to provide updates on progress.

Tēnā koutou It is my pleasure to update you on what has been happening on the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation enterprise.

WMI Farms Spring has sprung at Wairarapa Moana Farms (WMI). It is always exciting to see the new-born calves arrive and the milking sheds start up their twice a day routine of milking. Calving is now full on and things are going well. The herds are calving a little slower than last year as mating was brought forward a week. It has been a good winter to date with generally milder temperatures and good grass growth which was exactly what we were wanting. It was very wet in early July and the rain was needed to replenish the water table and assist the grass in regeneration from the autumn dry so there were no complaints. As well as dairy replacement calves (about 25% of the herd number) reared on each dairy farm, we are contract rearing 300 beef calves and 100 heifer calves at the Ropiha Road calf rearing unit. These will be sold as weaner calves, and are the beef cross calves in the photograph.

• Farm 9 staff moved on as the last WMI sharemilker moved out. All farms are now run by WMI managers • Cows were break-fed grass and silage • Winter chores were carried out • The irrigators received their maintenance and were parked-up for the winter • Farm staff took some annual leave • The sheds were prepared for calf rearing with new bedding put in place • There were staff training days for all our staff • New staff members were inducted and began to settle into their roles • The dairy sheds had all their plant serviced and entrance ways tidied up • The farm raceways were graded and had pumice placed on top where it was needed

Cows were dried off by the end of May. The 2019-2020 season was one of record production for WMI with the enterprise producing 4,752,679 kilograms milk solids.

We started sending milk to Miraka 20 July 2020. The month of July 2020 production was up slightly on production for July 2019.

Some cows stayed on the home farms for the six-week winter period and others were grazed on the dairy support farms at Ropiha Road and Ford Road. A lot was happening over the winter.

The Wairarapa Moana Farms dairy strategy is ‘12-5-Optimise’. WMI will be milking 12,000 cows and targeting production of 5.0m kilograms milk solids and optimising all farm key performance indicators.

Notification of a Deceased Shareholder Ka mate he tete, ka tupu he tete. Man dies and another replaces. Death is never easy to announce and we will all find ourselves in this position at some time in our lives.

We are finalising shelter and shade tree planting plans for farms 3 and 4 and will plant up before Labour Weekend. Our farm teams are very busy as are the Operations Managers, Nick Rowe and Moana Puha, who are led by the General Manager of Farms, Trevor Hamilton. It is the most stressful time of year on farm and the farm teams work long hours bringing in cows and calves and transitioning the cows back into the regular milking routine and feeding the calves. The management and office teams prepared and delivered calving packs for the staff which contain some instant and frozen meals and, also, meals that can go into a crockpot. It is important to ensure our staff remain well and eat a healthy diet over this very busy period in the farm calendar.

There are instances when the office is unaware of a shareholder having passed away and so correspondence and the Wairarapa Moana Mailer continue to be sent to the deceased shareholder. On some occasions whànau members have become upset when mail addressed to their loved one continues to arrive at the address on the share register. It would be greatly appreciated if whànau could let the office know of shareholders who have passed on. Give us a call so we can update the share register and support the whànau to succeed. Contact Ngaere on 0800 662 624 or ngaere@wairarapamoana.org.nz

Mangakino There has been some on-going maintenance work on the properties WMI owns in Mangakino. A lot of this work was postponed because of the COVID-19 Level 4 lockdown and the non-essential status given to this work during lockdown. Once the weather becomes warmer some of the exterior painting work will recommence.

Annual Financial Statements The Annual Financial Statements for the year ended 31st May 2020 are prepared, and the auditor is finishing up their work. Alice Wichman our Financial Controller and her accounting team will be pleased to see this very busy period completed.
