The Committee of Management visited our Ford Road dairy support unit in both September and December 2019 and inspected the new pastures and were briefed by Manager Alastair De Thierry on progress and future plans.

We were so impressed with progress, we just had to take some photos for the Mailer. Here is our story of the development on Ford Road.

It was decided over 10 years ago that more of the Ropiha dairy support unit should be converted to dairy. Also, the strategy was that WMI should be more self-sufficient in managing its dairy replacements, wintering of cows and production of grass silage.

This was also good management for biosecurity of the farming enterprise.

The Ford and Consul Road land was chosen for its flat-to-rolling contour allowing it to be cropped and harvested.

The land had been logged and by the 31st of December 2008 had been cleared of any remaining young forest and the 2007 and 2008 logging slash had been raked into large heaps. During the first half of 2009 the property was fenced and water

reticulation was installed. The land was sown in pasture and some paddocks were cropped. The manager’s house was built and Alastair De Thierry moved in. Alastair has managed the farm since then. Part of Alastair’s role has been the management of the ongoing development.

In October 2010 our shareholders visited the newly developed land for the first time.

They were suitably impressed with the way that the development had happened and how the grass was growing.

commencement of the development all waterways were left undisturbed and fenced off. Their existing beauty was further enhanced by selected planting where necessary.

This consisted mainly of flax and native plant species.

Whilst the development was successful there still remained a large number of piles of old stumps and logging slash which had not decomposed. In 2013 a programme to eliminate the piles by a mixture of burning and burying their contents commenced. A few paddocks were selected each year and the programme is now drawing to a close. The removal of the piles has resulted in about another 80 hectares of land coming into full pasture production.

The Ford and Consul Road blocks are much higher above sea level than the other Mangakino farms. As a result, the land gets a lot of morning dew and cooler air. It is definitely the best place to be on these hot dry days.

He’s been lending a hand on our farms since the age of 14.

He now follows very ably in the footsteps of dad, Khardinn Wereta, Farm Manager, and granddad, Roger Wereta, 2IC, both on Farm 6. You could definitely say farming is well and truly in his blood.

“I really enjoy the working environment at Wairarapa Moana, in particular, working with like-minded people who every day set out to do their best,” said Creston.

The management team is very pleased with the Ford and Consul Road farms which are now coming into 11 years of production. The land contributes a major role in the overall WMI farming enterprise’s success.

Ahuwhenua Trophy Competition for Horticulture The new Ahuwhenua Trophy competition for horticulture was launched on August 1, 2019 at the HortNZ Conference Gala Dinner by the Hon. Nanaia Mahuta.

Ahuwhenua Trophy Chairman Kingi Smiler says “It was logical and timely to have a separate event to recognise the Māori contribution to horticulture. For more than two centuries, Māori have exported horticultural products, a fact not widely recognised in New Zealand.

In the last ten years in particular, Māori have become major investors in the sector and this has resulted in good financial returns and jobs for our people. It is time to celebrate the achievements of Māori working in the horticultural sector.”

The new Ahuwhenua Trophy for Horticulture named

by Hon. Nanaia Mahuta as Haumietiketike is an exact replica of the trophy that was designed by Goldie, the New Zealand artist renowned for his painting of Māori leaders and their communities.

The creation of the trophy was an extensive collaborative effort between The Village Goldsmith in Wellington and the specialist silver-smithing firm of Ottewill that is based in Ashford in the county of Kent which is 98km southeast of London. The search was international for a company that had the capacity to spin the bowl in sterling silver

Creston said he definitely aspires to be a Farm Manager one day. His dad, Khardinn, leads by example and has set the bar very high when it comes to farming and work standards. Creston very confidently told us he plans to be even better!

The base was designed and carved at Te Puia, the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua.

Wairarapa Moana Trust Review 2020 This year we will be reviewing the Wairarapa Moana Trust, where it is now and where it will be in the future, and how does this align with Wairarapa Moana Incorporation. We will be recruiting an independent reviewer and looking to provide the outcome of the review by the next Wairarapa Moana AGM.

WAI 85 Update

A short update is provided on our application currently before the Waitangi Tribunal for the return of the Maraetai Dam lands. Hearings are now complete. The Tribunal have indicated that they are “trending towards” making an order for the return of the lands.

We are now moving into what is called the “iterative process”.

The agreed steps in this process are: 13 March 2020

December 2019 to 12 March 2020 Direct discussions between all parties to try and reach an agreed settlement.

Tribunal to release a First Report (Initial Report) with its high level views on the applications before it (this step only occurs if agreement between the parties has not been reached at this point).

Week of 4 May 2020

By 28 April 2020

All parties to update the Tribunal on progress with settlement discussions and determination of the terms and conditions and any issues with the practical transfer for the return of the land with Mercury and others.

The date of the Tribunal Final Report has yet to be agreed. However, it could be June / July 2020. This date is important because it triggers the statutory 90 day period during which parties can continue to negotiate.

If no deal is struck during this period, the Tribunal recommendations become binding on all parties, including the Crown.

Conference with the Tribunal to set the timetable for any further evidence that may be required for the Tribunal to issue its Final Report.

Mid June 2020 Further hearing to receive further evidence and submissions.

WMI Committee of Management remains committed on behalf of WMI owners to having our Treaty of Waitangi claims resolved. WMI has always been open to working with others to find a solution. We are in discussions with all parties to this application: the Crown, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki nui-ā-rua Settlement Trust, Raukawa Settlement Trust, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and the Pouākani Trust.

Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPA) YOUR VOICE: YOUR CHOICE An Enduring Power of Attorney authorises your attorney to make decisions on your behalf about your personal care and welfare and/or your property if you become mentally incapable of managing your own affairs.

Your attorney can be anyone you choose who you trust with respect to your wishes.

If you do not have an EPA in place, then anyone can apply to the Court under the PPPR Act to be your Welfare Guardian and Property Manager. Your Property Manager manages all your assets such as your benefits, money, house and land.

EITHER You give your power of attorney to someone you trust OR You let the courts become involved.

The EPA is for when you are alive, but your mental capacity has diminished. A will is for when you have passed away. Many believe that their partner, child or parent can automatically make those decisions for them and look after their affairs. This is not correct. Being whānau does NOT give you any specific legal rights when a person is alive.

Mental incapacity can happen to anyone at any time for lots of different reasons. Once you are incapable you do not have a voice.

Aspirations from beginning to end of study?

Did they change? Why/how?

I wanted to be a Māori Scientist in Biology, but found I had more interest in Plants and Horticulture. Changing my degree from Biological Sciences to Plant Science, my aspiration was to become a Plant scientist and work within the horticulture sector, improving crop production.

However, I have since found a strong interest in researching about Native Taonga species.

How did the Future Leaders scholarship assist you?

The Wairarapa Moana grant was a big financial help during my studies, but it also helped to form a relationship with the iwi, through attending the wānanga, and learning what Wairarapa Moana has to offer for their iwi was encouragement and incentive that encouraged me to finish my studies.

Future plans? Current employment?

I am currently doing a summer studentship with Plant & Food Research based in Auckland. My future plans are to graduate in May and to further a career with Plant & Food Research.

Any advice for other Future Leaders scholarship recipients?

Be proactive about the things you want to achieve, creating a discussion can help achieve your dream.

Kua ngaro te Hā, kua ngaro te iwi Māori” – the living essence of the Māori is their language, if we lose the reo we stop being Māori”. So true, come on whānau, use all the Māori resources available to help you achieve the goal of learning te reo Māori, te reo Rangatira. Kaua e mataku he Rangatira koe.

Lesson 3 – Moving on to the pepeha When greeting hosts or people from outside of the area it is always good to make connections to one another and one way of doing this is through the pepeha. This identifies the landmarks and the history of who you are and where you and your ancestors come from. Pepeha is the building of relationships between different groups and coming out of that with a commonality.

Ka haere a John ki te toa ki te hoko ngā kai mō ngā tamariki John has gone to the shop to buy food for his children.

As we have already learnt the six part sentence = ka haere a John ki te toa = John has gone to the shop.

The question would be, For what?

By adding another connector ki te we can add to the sentence ka haere a John ki te toa, ki te hoko = John has gone to the shop to buy.

Buy what?

Ka haere a John ki te toa ki te hoko ngā kai = John has gone to the shop to buy food.

Ngā is plural, more than one, and te is singular.

Ka haere a John ki te toa – John went to the shop – ki te hoko ngā kai – to buy food - mō ngā tamariki – for his children.

To add to this sentence – E tatari ana i te kainga = waiting at home ... and so forth Ka haere a John ki te toa, ki te hoko ngā kai, mō ngā tamariki, e tatari ana i te kainga.

John has gone to the shop to buy food for his children who are waiting at home.

Don’t forget whānau to start a sentence, the structure is this: Tense marker Ka Ka Ka Ka

Some connectors

te – the; ngā – several; i te – from the; me – and; me te – and the; mō – for; o – of and their meanings – to put “ed” or “en” on the end of a word “Ngia” is used. Ngia, I was told is Kahungunu dialect.

People also use, “tia” and “hia“– it’s a dialectal thing. Each area has their own dialect. kōrerongia – spoken matakitakingia – watched

Don’t forget whānau practice makes perfect By now whānau you should have an easy understanding of the structure of the sentence.

You should also be building up your words and having a basic kōrero even if it is just a few sentences or two words put together it is progress.

Kohunui Marae On Wellington Anniversary Weekend, up to forty-five whānau members attended a wānanga at Kohunui Marae. The focus of the wānanga related to whakapapa and our links to the whenua.

Saturday was spent exploring some of our lands on the Okoura and Pirinoa land blocks, as well as a trip to the Ranana urupā down Whakatomotomo Road. When we walked on our own lands, we started thinking about the things we could do instead of just having a farmer lease it. What could we do to get our own people involved on our own land? The dreams of today can be the reality of tomorrow.

Interestingly, when we visited the Kohunui Urupā, we learned by whānau on the wānanga, of two particular burial spots in the front section which have not yet got a headstone or even any markings. Hopefully these tÌpuna will be acknowledged in the not-too-distant future. Our kōrero also turned to how we can restore and maintain the back half of this urupā – a project for the not-too-distant future.

We also went to try and find the Tauanui pā site, guided

by Foss Leach, a renowned archaeologist who first started exploring south Wairarapa and Palliser Bay pre-historic sites fifty years or so ago. We were successful in our search, although we were on the wrong ridge to actually access the site. Next time maybe.

On Sunday morning, our whanaunga and TPK rep, Tiraumaera Te Tau, came to kōrero to us about papakāinga and what the steps would be if we were interested in establishing a papakāinga on our lands. Tēnā koe Tirau.

We also visited Turanganui No 5, another whānau urupā, and managed to rediscover, and clear the grass away from a concrete-covered grave, the only concreted one there, but knew full well that others of our tÌpuna are laying there in unidentified graves. Thoughts went to clearing this whole section and maybe erecting a memorial stone,

upon which whānau could place a plaque with their tÌpuna names on it, if it was known that they lay there. Another important project.

An amazing opportunity was made possible by Raihānia TÌpoki, for us to enter and walk over the Parikarangaranga fortified pā site on Whakatomotomo Road. On previous occasions when wanting to gain access to the Pā site, gorse had made it nigh on impossible for us to gain entry. Ngā mihi nunui ki a Raihānia, who organised clearing a path through the dense gorse, enabling us to get to the trenches encircling the Pā.

Some of us had to then use the supple jack – kareao – to pull ourselves up the entrenchment and onto the site proper. There was kōrero that this Pā may have been used

by Te Rangitawhanga, a common ancestor and one of the chiefs who led a migration in the 1600s from Heretaunga to Wairarapa. Although the site is covered in trees, the many food storage pits were still readily identifiable. Having two well-renowned archaeologists with us (Foss Leach and Janet Davidson) made exploration a real learning experience. We began to think of ourselves as apprentice archaeologists.

Yet another project will be to clear this Pā site of undergrowth, and make it accessible for whānau to reconnect, and contemplate not only the past, but also the future.

Later that day, after lunch at the Lake Ferry park, we visited two more significant sites: the

Shareholder/ Beneficiary Search Pā site on Raho Ruru Road, and another Pā site on Lake Ferry Road, not far north of Burnside Church, where kumara pits and whare sites were easily recognisable.

Thank you so much Foss and Janet for spending time with us sharing your knowledge of our whenua and the way our tÌpuna used the land.

When we returned to the marae, Teresa Aporo presented information to the whānau on work being done by the Māori Standing Committee on the South Wairarapa District Council, to identify the location of significant sites, so these can be used by the Planning and Environment groups to assist in decision-making around the granting of resource consents for land works. If people are aware of these significant sites, they can be protected from future ruin. Field trips to these sites are still continuing. Tēnā koe Teresa for your passion and the time and effort you put into not only our Marae, but also our land and our waters.

A special treat on Sunday evening was to visit the star compass as the sun went down, with a kōrero from Raihānia about the celestial indicators. This kōrero came to life when the laser light came out, and we could see quite clearly which stars and which constellations were being referred to. It was quite magic to see the night sky appear before us as we enjoyed Te Mātai Whetu.

Finally, this leaves us to say that our next wānanga will be at the end of March, with a focus on our connection to, and the wellbeing of our waterways.

Tēnā koutou katoa Yes, it’s dry at Mangakino. We are fortunate that we have nearly a thousand hectares of irrigated land and these quality pastures are growing grass oblivious to the hot dry days going on around them.

Non-irrigated land still has some pasture cover, however, this is slowly getting eaten. Our cows are being fed a mixture of grass, palm kernel and silage. They’re milking well and producing in excess 1.5 kgMS each day.

To the end of January, the farms have produced 3,111,239 kgMS. If the dry continues through to the beginning of April, we expect the year’s production to be 4,558,500 kgMS which will be down slightly on our original budget of 4,826,500 kgMS.

CHANGE TO MASTERTON OFFICE HOURS

Trevor Hamilton, our General Manager of Operations, together with Nick Rowe and Moana Puha, our Operations Managers, formulated a plan to get through the dry period and this is currently being rolled out with farm managers and their teams.

With less milk available nationally due to the hot weather the whole of Aotearoa is currently experiencing, it is normal for the milk price to increase as the supply of milk decreases. We have been thrown a curve ball with the Coronavirus affecting parts of China and we are not sure how this will impact on milk price as China is a major customer for our milk.

I think that the Coronavirus will have some impact on the milk price, however, as at least 70 percent of the milk produced for the season has been sold at good prices our budget milk price of $6.00 a kgMS will be well and truly exceeded.

Overall the WMI enterprise is operating well thanks to our dedicated farm teams, strong management and governance.

50 Unclaimed Dividends Shareholder Bank Accounts It is pleasing to know that a large number of shareholders are receiving their dividends because they have updated their postal address and bank details.

Thank you, this is a significant improvement on earlier years.

In late 2019 WMI trialled a direct credit payment of the annual dividend to shareholders living in Australia. A small number of shareholders took this offer up and the payment to their Australian bank accounts was made in late December. There is room for further improvement, we will keep you updated.

If you’re living in Australia payment of dividends can be made by direct credit to your Australian bank account or your New Zealand bank account, or a cheque can be sent by post. If you want to change the method of receiving your dividend, please contact the Masterton office for further information.

If you’re living in New Zealand payment of dividends are direct credited to your New Zealand bank account.

If you’re living in another country payment of dividends are by cheque and sent by post.
