Age No Barrier To Shearing When most of his contemporaries have put themselves out to pasture, shareholder Mauri Te Whaiti of Featherston is still shearing the odd sheep at the age of eighty-four.
and-on ever since. Even when he had taken up other employment he couldn’t stay out of the shearing shed. He would finish one job and head off to shear some sheep after work. Mauri’s son, Arthur, who is also a shearer, takes him on the job sometimes. If Arthur’s feeling a bit rough from a hard night he will get Mauri to help him shear the first run of sheep in the morning. He also helps out in the yards and around the shed.

Many shearers have suffered debilitating back problems brought on by their chosen vocation. Mauri’s back can still handle it though he doesn’t have the stamina he used to. He says the key to keeping fit is the old shearer’s standard – the black woollen Jackie Howe singlet. It keeps them warm even when they are drenched in sweat. Mauri reckons if the kidneys get cold it can really affect the back too. A Lifetime on the Handpiece – Mauri Te Whaiti still shearing at 84.
Shearers are a breed unto themselves and Mauri loves the life. They are known for their hard-working, hard-drinking ways and Mauri has always had it in his blood. He first picked up a handpiece when he was sixteen and has been relieving sheep of their fleeces off-
He has journeyed all around the North Island with shearing gangs and has a raft of tales to tell of the mischief the guys used to get up to after a day’s work. He said the boss would often find it hard to find the shearers in the morning.
