In the early hours of Saturday, April 29th, whanau from Hurunuiorangi and Papawai Marae headed towards Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington to celebrate, with other invited guests, the opening of the first long term exhibition since Te Papa opened in 1998. Proceedings commenced at 8am with the welcoming sound of the putatara and the karanga to which kuia Mihi Namana responded. Once guests were seated, the continental breakfast began during which Te Papa dignitaries delivered the opening speeches and then concluded by declaring Whangai, Whenua, Ahi Kaa officially open. Guests were then invited to view the exhibition before it was opened to the public at 10am. The underlying theme for the exhibition looks at the dramatic transformation of Aotearoa New Zealand – how man has impacted on the land and how the land has impacted on man. The bicultural weave is easily identified throughout the various stages of the exhibition.
Te Papa is confident that “you will be immersed in the rapid conversion of this untouched environment into cultivated land, from forests and wetlands to gardens then farms and settlements. But this came at a cost. Hear the haunting lament for extinct species at a memorial wall, along with a recreation of the call of the extinct huia”. Packed full of information and interactivity, this is a hands-on exhibition for all the family and entry is free. Hurunuiorangi Marae was invited to contribute to the ahi kaa segment and agreed to the use of the pou whenua for the next 10 years, the duration of the exhibition. The last time this pou whenua was
