Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te Ao The bird that feasts upon the Miro tree, will reign supreme within the forest The bird that feasts upon the tree of knowledge will reign supreme throughout the world A well-known whakatauk¯i shared by Makoura College Principal Tom Hullena in his whaikōrero, highlighted the importance of a good education that will allow the many to roam freely and to explore what the world has to offer and to help create a better-changing world. But it wasn’t too long ago that Makoura College was on the verge of closure due to a declining school role which some commentators described as white flight, a socio-economic gap and racist attitudes, which was nothing more than the typical case of the poor side of town, the east versus the affluent side of town, the west. Four years on, with Tom having a knowledgeable understanding of cultural values and a determined can-do attitude, set a new course with new and improved

staff. With rising success in academic excellence and a progressively growing school role, saw Makoura take out the 2014 Prime Minister’s Education Excellence in Leading Award – Te Atakura Award. The judges said: “Makoura College is determined to recognise the value of every student. The whole school embraces tikanga Māori and the mutual respect and high expectations. The result is an impressive improvement in student achievement, pride and engagement in education”. With a growing roll of almost 60 per cent Māori, many of whom whakapapa to Ngāti Kahungunu, the quest for education excellence often requires a vision of
