Habitat for Humanity is an International organisation that started in the United States in 1976 and was introduced to New Zealand by Ian Hay of Keith Hay Homes in 1993. Two years later former Keith Hay Homes salesman Julian Shields and Di Cressey set up the Nelson affiliate. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to building simple but decent houses for families in need. Its mission statement reflects that objective: “Habitat for Hu-

manity is a Christian organisation that works in partnership with people of goodwill and families in need to eliminate sub-standard housing by building and selling simple decent homes on an affordable basis.” Habitat seeks to give people a hand up, rather than a hand out. Families chosen for Habitat homes are expected to provide $500 deposit plus 500 hours of their own time, whether it is helping in the actual building or by way of raising funds.
