Car seat law to save childrensâ lives School principals and some parents say changes to the age that children must be in a car seat will be a pain in the bum, but NZTA insists there is only one purpose behind the move â to save lives. Changes to the law come into effect next Friday, November 1, which will make it mandatory for children to ride in an approved child restraint until the age of seven. Currently the law applies for children until the age of five. Local groups like Plunket and the Nelson
Parents Centre say they support the move but the new law could be a problem for local schools if they take children on school outings. Two local principals spoken to by Waimea Weekly say it will be frustrating but they understand the safety reasons behind it. âI think it will be good to ensure students are transported safely,â says Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson. âBut you look at some six year olds and youâd think well absolutely they should still have a booster
seat but then some others are quite big for their age. I know itâs easier to put a target age on it, but itâs an interesting one.â Dave says it is yet to be seen how much of an impact the new law change will have on his school, which occasionally takes trips to the Richmond Library or to sports fields in Brightwater. More parents could now be required to help out with transport to accommodate. âDo we need to have some car seats in reserve at school? Because youâd hate for one kid to miss out if they

forgot to leave theirs at school. But itâs like anything; itâll take time to get used to.â Don McLean, who heads the Nelson Principalâs Association, says heâs put it to parents to be aware to bring their five to seven year olds to school in a child restraint. âWe flagged it to parents that itâs going to bring some issues around transport for trips. It is about safety and it would be remiss of us to go and say, âwe arenât going to do trips SEE PAGE 2
Big expo for little vehicles Mention models and hobbies and most will automatically think dinky toys and plastic plane kitsets. But time and technology have completely changed the face of modelling as visitors to this weekendâs Nelson Model & Hobby Expo at the Stoke Hall will be able to witness. While kitsets and scratch-building of models is still a huge part of the modelling scene, the advent of realistic and extremely detailed âoff-the-shelf â diecast and resin models has added a whole new dimension to the scene allowing those involved to build up extensive collections without having to find the time and patience to build from scratch. For many involved, what started out, usually early in life, as a hobby has now become SEE PAGE 2
