Filthy house gets clean-up order A Richmond house that is so untidy and unsanitary it poses a health risk will be cleaned up after the Tasman District Council issued a cleansing order to the property’s occupiers. Council has the power to issue the cleansing order under the Health Act to the owners or occupiers of any house that is considered a danger to people’s health. Two weeks ago, council ordered the occupiers of a Richmond house to clean up their act - if the house is not cleaned up within a

certain time council will employ contractors to do the job. Environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says it is only the fourth time in 20 years he has issued a cleansing order. Sadly, Dennis says the owners of these houses are often experiencing some kind of mental or physical health issues and need help. “It’s not a common occurrence but it’s an extreme occurrence and there’s usually a story behind it,” he says. Dennis says council is usually contacted

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz about unsanitary houses by a concerned neighbour and then inspects the premises to see the extent of the problem. “If a property reaches a point where the people can’t keep it in a state where it is sanitary and tidy and we are satisfied there is a public health risk in terms of sanitary

conditions and vermin and that sort of thing, the council has the power to issue a cleansing order. ‘We give the home owner a certain period in which they have to respond - we don’t just drop it on them. If they fail to respond, council has the power to go and clean the place up and that’s a charge on the land owner. Dennis says the length of time given to clean up a property or house depends on the extent of the problem.

Ford fans to show off their wheels True-blue Nelsonians have a good excuse to take their pride and joys for a spin this Sunday when the Nelson Classic Ford Club holds its annual cruise out to Rabbit Island to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. The founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, and every year the club invites all Ford owners to attend the birthday celebrations. Club member Tom Champion of Richmond says the event is always popular attracting around 100 Fords ranging from ancient Model Ts to the latest Ford Falcons. Although Tom admits he made a disastrous start to his car-owning life, buying a rusty Austin A30, he soon saw the light and bought the first of his many Fords. Tom, will be driving his latest acquisition, a pristine, blue 1965 Zodiac Mark III, out to Rabbit Island on Sunday.

“I think my favourite would be my Mazda Astina. I think it was just my first car, it was the perfect little runabout, it went everywhere with me, all over New Zealand.”

“Probably my Courier, it’s just useful for everything.”

“It’s not a Ford and my son will shoot me. One of the best was a Chrysler Charger, beautiful car. I had it for 10 years. I’ve always liked American cars and this was the nearest to it.”

“I’ve always had Fords - I just like the shape of them. I had Anglias and Escorts when I was growing up and then moved to Cortinas and Zephyrs and Zodiacs. “I always wanted a Zodiac when I was younger but they were the luxury version of the Zephyr and I couldn’t afford one. I’ve been looking out for one for a while so when I saw this one in Timaru I bought it.” Tom says Sunday’s event will be a good opportunity to inspect some of the best Fords in the Nelson region. There will also be prizes for the Best Car and a range of other categories, a sausage sizzle and, of course, the cutting of a birthday cake. Cars will need to be set up at Rabbit Island by 10 am with the public viewing from about 11 am to 2.30 pm.

The truck driver, with the help of a member of the public, was able to pull the pole to the side of the road before the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived. A new, driver-feedback solar-powered speed sign was also flattened by the truck. The sign was installed by the Tasman District Council and cost around $10,000.

House Fire on Tasman St: Firefighters booted down the door of a Tasman St home last Tuesday morning after a fan heater caught fire in the bedroom area of the house. Three fire trucks attended the blaze at the house, owned by The Prince Albert Backpackers and Bar owner Naiane Denardin, at around 8am. Senior Station Officer Craig Davies says the crew used a high pressure hose to contain the fire inside the small house very quickly. Dolphins visit Nelson: Four small dolphins were photographed happily swimming in Nelson Haven off Tahunanui beach on Friday morning. Nelson man Chris Ratcliffe says he was in an inflatable boat with two young children that morning when he came across the dolphins. “I thought I saw some the other day but this time we definitely did. I had my phone with me so was able to get a few photos.” He says the boat was borrowed off a mate and the two six year-olds were thrilled to see the dolphins play. “They were pretty happy, they loved it.”

Pohara fails water quality test: Popular Golden Bay tourist spot Pohara Beach needs to be cleaned up after water quality testing showed that bacteria counts at the popular Golden Bay swimming beach exceeded national safety standards five times last summer. Tasman District Council environmental staff monitor water quality at 11 popular river swimming holes and beaches throughout the summer and results of last summer’s tests showed that Pohara is the only problem area. Five samples from Pohara exceeded the guidelines, with two of them so bad that council erected warning signs at the beach from January 10-20.

Slipway to be cleaned up: Port Nelson’s Calwell Slip site has been contaminated by chemicals used in boat maintenance since the 1970s, but new funding, announced by the government on Saturday, will allow for plans to be made to deal with the chemicals. Environment Minister Nick Smith says the government will provide $200,000 worth of funding to the Port Company as part of a partnership with them and the Nelson City Port Nelson CEO Martin Council. The Byrne and Nick Smith at chemicals that the Calwell Slipway. will be cleaned up are both copper and TPP [Tributyltin]. Tributyltin was used as a surface coating to reduce the growth of weed and other organisms on ship hulls and was discontinued during the 1990s, although residual levels may still be present on some older vessels. Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says the port are matching the government’s funding and actual decontamination work will most likely begin during the 2016 and 2017 financial year. The Calwell Slipway has been in operation since 1970 and is the third largest slipway in New Zealand. It is now managed so that all contaminated material from ship maintenance is collected, avoiding further contamination. Builders needed for Chch: Nelson builders looking for a change of scenery and philanthropic project are being called on to get involved with a Habitat for Humanity build in Christchurch. Free accommodation is on offer for experienced tradespeople who would like to help Habitat for Humanity build 21 simple decent homes for deserving Christchurch families. Searchers find man’s body inside van in river Jacob Chandler A body, identified as missing Nelson man Murray Teece, was found in a van in the Waimea River, upstream from the Appleby bridge, on Saturday night. An extensive search was stepped up Saturday afternoon with the police national dive squad called in to scour the Waimea and Appleby rivers along with family and friends of Murray. Diggers were used to divert parts of the river, which had flooded, while the search took place. The 73-year-old was reported missing on Friday after failing to turn up to work in Murray Teece. the morning. He was known to occasionally drive across the river in his van on the way to work but not in the spot he was found. Police received information suggesting he had visited his employers office on Bartlett Rd en route as part of his normal routine. Murray was a track manager at the Nelson Speedway Association and well-known committee member. Messages of remembrance were posted on social media. Murray’s son Keightley Teece, a well-known stockcar driver, gave thanks for the support provided to the family. “Can’t thank everyone enough for your messages of support over the last couple of days! He’s a man that can never be replaced. Time for you to go build heavens race track now! I’ll see ya when I see ya.” Worksafe New Zealand is investigating the death.

$13M to upgrade Trafalgar Centre The demolition of the northern end of the Trafalgar Centre, as part of a $13 million upgrade of the city’s premier spectator venue, has been recommended to Nelson City Council. At a meeting in the council chambers on Thursday, councillors heard a report presented by council project manager Richard Kirby, which recommended the demolition and then rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets. The centre was closed in December 2013 after the council – which owns the building – deemed it a major risk to life in the

event of a big earthquake. Richard says the report showed the current building was “brittle” in the event of an earthquake, but that liquefaction would not be a major issue. The recommended option from the report would see $12.956 million spent on the centre, which would include the demolition and rebuild of the northern end, strengthening work on the western edge of the new southern end and $7 million worth of work to the main building. Currently around $10 million is set aside in the long term plan for the upgrade of the building.

lion, says Richard. Mayor Rachel Reese says she’s pleased more investigation work was done because the cost is a lot lower than the original estimates. “I think he [Richard] summed it up well when he said essentially what we’re getting is a refurbished building that will set us up for the next 50 years at half the price of what a new one would cost.” Nelson’s Gaire Thompson spoke from the public gallery and says too much time and money has been spent already. Councillors will make a decision on the report this Thursday morning.

Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz If that option was picked up by councillors this Thursday, it would mean the proposed northern end wouldn’t open until June next year, four months after the deadline council put on the building reopening earlier this year. Richard says the rest of the centre could be opened, but with some disruption. To pull it down and build a new one on the same site would cost around $25-$30 mil-

Redwood Valley’s Barbara Beatson will be taking her champion black exotic cat Jayden to the Nelson Cat Club Show at the Hope Hall this Sunday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Champion cat to take on Nelson’s best Simon Bloomberg Redwood Valley cat owner Barbara Beatson is hoping her gold double grand champion black exotic, Windacres Nite Design, will continue his almost purfect record at the Nelson Cat Club Show at the Hope Hall on Sunday. The three-year-old tom, who is known as Jayden when he is not on show, was judged the Pedigree Persian Entire Cat of the Year at the Pedigree Persian Cat Fanciers Show in Wellington last weekend. That was his fifth major ribbon in six shows and now Barbara is taking Jayden and his female friend, Pearl the white Persian and two kittens, on a much shorter journey to the Nelson Cat Club’s Show this Sunday.

“I love showing cats - it’s my hobby,” Barbara says. “It’s a straight out beauty contest but each breed has its own standards. “Temperament plays a big part too. The cat has to be able to present themselves well to the judges.” “That’s why Jayden does so well. He is happy to go to the shows and is very relaxed.” However, Barbara says Jayden is less than happy about the lengthy preparation that goes into the shows. “He is not overly happy when he gets a bath and shampoo before the show but he likes getting his hair blow-dried,” she says. Sunday’s show will feature a variety of breeds of cats as well as stalls, spot prizes, food and refreshments. It will be held at the Hope Hall on Main Rd Hope from 9am to 4.30pm.

Fishing fleet blessed ahead of season

The sun may have been out but the wind was chilly, as thousands of people made their way down to the Sunderland Marine Pier to celebrate the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony on Sunday. The event, postponed from Saturday due to rain, followed on from fireworks held on Friday night to mark the beginning of the fishing season. Bishop Richard Elena, Reverend Jeff Cotton, Father David Gruschow and Archdeacon Andy Joseph led the blessing, with musical performances provided by the Nelson Male Voice Choir, the Nelson Brass Band and the Nelson Christian Academy Choir.

Chairperson of the Blessing of the Fleet, Mike Smith, says the turnout was better than he expected. He says about 26 per cent of Nelson’s working population are somehow involved in the fishing industry. “I think people are starting to come to realise how much the fishing industry means to Nelson, which they haven’t done for donkey’s years. The service is so poignant which is why people keep coming back.” Sue Sweeney, whose husband died at sea three years ago, tossed a bouquet into the water before a minutes silence was held, broken by eight bell tolls. “She was very, very emotional. I just hope it was a wee bit of a closure for her,” Mike says.

Top of the South Gymnastics, Wednesday, July 15: Overall, Gymnastics Nelson was happy with the results from the Nelson gymnasts at the Top of the South competition. It is still the middle of the season so there is still plenty of room for improvement, but overall there were some great results. Their step 2 girls took first, second and third place overall and first and second in the team’s event. In the step 3 under girls event, Nelson took first, second and third places overall. Step 5 over’s girl’s grade, Nelson took out first and second place Newcomers to Nelson, Wednesday, July 8: The Nelson New Comer’s Network hosted a successful evening at Rhythm and Brown on Wednesday, July 8. The event saw around 15 people turn up to socialise and network with others who are also new to the area, although the event is also open to existing residents who want to meet new people. Organisers say the event has really grown with earlier meetings only attracting a few people.

Stoke to work in Richmond didn't have their lights on. Makes it bloody hard for people pulling out from driveways or side roads to see you. Common sense people. Mind you that's not so common any more. Tania Preston Brunell. Was hard to see the twit on foot and wearing black who did the mad dash across the road in front on me on Main Rd Stoke by Bunnings, at 7am this morning, too. Bloody womble. Megan Walsh. Parking wardens for Richmond Mall: If it stops people taking the piss, of course it's a good idea. The only ones who are going to object are those exploiting it. Bit like those who complain about CCTV, if you are doing nothing wrong, then what's your problem? Brian Gower. The problem is most of them will be staff members from inside the mall, and if they don't get to park there they fill up our bloody street across from the mall. It makes it hard for us residents to drive in and out of our own street because there is not enough room for cars to park either side, nor for two cars to be able to pass each other. I think it is another revenue gathering exercise and a waste of bloody time. Dave Wastney.

The problem I see is the mall and surrounding area is growing, but the amount of parking spaces is not. I’m dreading Christmas time out there. Karina Tasker. Trafalgar Centre plans shown: Well, if the intention is to replace the Victory Room and the toilets, I suggest that they be built to the eastern side of the main hall area, then removed completely to allow room for the Southern Link road to go round that corner to link up with the bridge and highway. The current facilities and hall could then continue to be used for some events until the new extension is finished. Carol Stewart. What a waste of money. Mike Roberts.

Who needs 3 hours to do the shopping? Jeannette MacEwan.

Who can know what to believe now? I'm tempted to wonder if there isn't a certain amount of face-saving going on - expensively. And perhaps after all this muckin' about, Mr Rainey will get his beloved performing arts centre... after all, it's the public purse they're so eagerly raiding so anything becomes possible. Nutty business idea gains traction

Redwood Valley couple Jocelyn and Denis Laird have been going nuts getting their new venture off the ground but they have finally cracked it gaining recognition at the National Farmers Market Awards to be held in Tauranga this Saturday. Jocelyn and Denis planted 400 walnut trees on their four hectare property on Golden Hills Rd in 2003 with the intention of producing and marketing nut and oil products. Jocelyn says it has been a long drawn out process waiting for the trees to start producing commercial quantities but now their business, Golden Hills Walnuts, is gaining some momentum. “We brought the place in 2001 and, because I’m a farmer’s daughter, I knew we had to do something with the land,” Jocelyn says. “So we pulled out all the old apple and peach trees and planted walnuts. “We knew it would be a long term project but we are both passion-

ate about it. We produced our first oil in 2010 to make sure we were doing things right and this year we had our first big harvest of over a tonne so we are getting there.” It appears as though Jocelyn and Denis certainly managed to do things right with their Golden Hills Walnut Oil winning a silver medal in the New Zealand Gourmet Oil competition in 2012 and 2013. And now their shelled walnuts have also finished runnerup in the Tastiest Nut Product section of the Farmers Market Awards. Although Golden Hills Walnuts is focusing on oil production, it also produces and markets walnuts as a meal, butter, halves, pieces and whole shelled. Nothing is wasted with bits and pieces being sold as birdseed and the shells being used as mulch. Jocelyn says they grow Serr and Meyric varieties of walnut trees that were grafted in Nelson by River Terrace Nurseries. The new

The Lairds have been so busy establishing their trees and settingup their processing plant and systems that they haven’t had time to focus on marketing their products although Jocelyn says that seems to be taking care of itself. She started selling Golden

Hills range at the Nelson Farmers Market and Nelson Market and now supplies a number of shops throughout the country including Moore Wilson’s in Wellington. The only problem Jocelyn, a retired physiotherapist, says is that they could become too busy. She says Denis is still working as a manager at Helicopters New Zealand and they could be a bit stretched as the trees mature and start producing more nuts. “It’s a lot of work and we may reach the point where we can’t keep up. We still collect the nuts using rolling hand harvesters so we may have to look at some sort of harvesting machinery or even selling more whole nuts.” Neudorf Mushrooms’ fresh pickled mushrooms were highly commended in the preserves section at the Farmers Market Awards while Reni Gargiulo’s Kiwi Kai salmon dip was highly commended in the Fresh Produce from the Water category.

If you’re aged 50 or older, then you’re eligible to join Grey Power, an organisation you’ve probably heard of, but one whose complete role you may not fully understand. The voluntary organisation was established in 1986 by a group protesting against the imposition of the surcharge on New Zealand Super-

annuation. The movement quickly spread from Auckland and further associations formed in other centres. Nelson Grey Power is one of these associations and also the largest in the country, with over 9500 members in the Nelson and Richmond district. Nelson Grey Power may be involved with political activism through its National Federation, but they are far more than just a political lobby group. The multi-faceted association plays an important role, not only offering its members benefits such as discounts at certain retailers and service providers, but directly assists those aged 50 and over through advisory, advocacy and education processes. Welcome to the first edition of our additional way of contacting our members, also to those of you thinking of becoming members, as well as you readers who may not be aware of Nelson Grey Powers’ activities and benefits. At 2015 AGM we promised to bring positive action to our organisation and by taking this step we are hoping to show the public we are honouring that pledge. Are you noticing the rise in your power accounts? Now that we are in the throes of a cold winter have you thought of joining Grey Power Electricity? This is available to those who are members of Grey Power and is one method of reducing the cost of winter heating. On occasions Nelson Grey Power gets requests from various organisations around the region, we assist if we can but at all times we must adhere to our non political stance and keep away from controversial subjects as you will have supporters from either side and to support one side or the other would result in Grey Power being the loser. providers, accountants, cafés, builders, electricians, health and beauty, medical practitioners, plumbers and travel services. Participating businesses will also feature a Grey Power sticker, showing their support for the association and identifying themselves for members. Grey Power is a national organisation and financial members can use their Grey Power card at any participating business throughout the country, including most Challenge service stations who offer members eight cents off every litre of fuel, from the first litre right up to 100 litres - perfect for filling up the boat or motorcaravan and, over a year, offering an impressive saving. Members of Nelson Grey Power receive immediate free life insurance coverage of $2000 in the case of accidental death, and by signing up to Grey Power electricity and bottled gas can also offer sizeable savings – in fact, the savings people make are generally more than enough to cover the yearly membership fee. Members wanting to take advantage of the association’s electricity and gas plan can also rest assured that they will still receive their lines company dividend, if it is offered in their area, and Grey Power Electricity can guarantee they will protect people’s energy rates

from increasing beyond the “Price Protection Rate” until March 31, 2019. To learn more about the plan, have a look at the website at www.greypowerelectricity.co.nz. A quarterly newsletter is published by the association, keeping members up to date with the goings-on of the association locally and issues affecting its members. First Birthday Celebration This Saturday - Come and join the party 277 High Street, Motueka It’s The Gun Shop’s birthday this Saturday and you’re invited to join the party. They may be celebrating a year in business but Neil, Isabel and James Simpson swear it doesn’t feel like it. After opening The Gun Shop Motueka in July last year, there are a few words they would use to describe the experience of jointly owning their first shop: hectic, chaotic, busy and fran-

tic being just a few of them, but don’t think they haven’t enjoyed every single minute of it. They have. It has been a blast!! The father and son team have a passion for guns that just can’t be beaten and this was the driving force that led them to establish The Gun Shop on Motueka’s main street. Both Neil and James have accumulated a number of years’ experience and are now using their exten-

sive knowledge to help keen hunters from a store they can call their own – a store that has gun enthusiasts solely in mind. Neil previously owned a gun shop in England for five years before he came out to New Zealand. Whilst in the UK Neil lead a lifestyle most hunters would be keen to have and one that has given him a lot of skills and knowledge that he is more than happy to pass on to

James also has a wealth of knowledge regarding firearms. Having been born “with a gun in his hand” it is not surprising he took up the sport of Clay Target Shooting and has previously competed in two Oceania and World competitions. With Neil’s 45 years’ experience around guns, and the two lads proficiency in everything from clay shooting to hunting and pistol shooting, and Isabel’s support and hard work in the office, any

First Birthday Celebration This Saturday - Come and join the party 277 High Street, Motueka Shop Motueka for their shooting needs. Their Facebook page is full of positive reviews and Neil believes it’s their “great customer service, knowledge and the right prices” that have people impressed. Meeting like-minded people was always one of the draw cards to owning the store and Neil and James say it has been great talking to those as enthusiastic as they are about shooting. Their relationship with many customers doesn’t stop when they walk out the door either. Neil and James have happily taken their customers out shooting expedi-

tions. Whether it’s helping them improve their skills at clay shooting or coaching first timers, for the boys, it’s all about setting people up for a successful shooting experience. As well as being practical, hands on shooters with a library of knowledge and advice, Neil and James also stock a huge range of quality products for the hunter or gun man. In store you’ll find guns from Browning, Howa, Marlin, Remington and Ruger, ADI gun powder, Federal, Hornady and Norma ammunition and a range of other brands including Ridgeline,

Buck knives, Tasco and Bushnell scopes and binoculars, Swarovski scopes and Nikon and Vortex optics. They’re a one stop shop, offering other services such as a re-loading bench for customers to use, gun repairs and servicing, and fitting scopes – basically the whole nine yards when it comes to guns. The Gun Shop Motueka is a unique feature in the Tasman region because unlike other stores, it specialises solely in firearms and ammunition meaning Neil and James can focus on what really matters to them and their customers. Whether you’re a seasoned

hunter or a beginner looking for a full kit out and plenty of advice, you won’t find a better service or range of products. Neil and James would like to thank all of their customers and suppliers for their support throughout the last year. Just a thought...

Recently I was talking with someone who inspired me. The person works in the community, caring for others in practical ways that encompass the whole person – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. And yes, that person is a Christian. What really moved me was the simplicity of their faith. For them Jesus’ love is everything. They believe that if we could love one another the way Jesus does, we’d have no problems. This might sound a bit simplistic but is it? The trouble is that we all have our own agendas. Those agendas are very important (we think). So we use all kinds of methods to achieve those agendas. Christians have been as bad at this as anyone else. I read some US research that shows over a 16 year period, Christians have gone down in the general public’s estimation by 64 per cent. Now only 16 per cent of unchurched people view Christians positively. Most view us as judgemental and narrow-minded. Ouch! But some of that is actually our fault. We have judged others Susan Gill, even though Jesus tells us not to. Church on the We have focused on sexuality (as Hill. if we are the moral police) and ignored the wider issues of economics and ecology. We have isolated ourselves, at times, instead of being contributing members to our community. I am guilty of all these things as much as anyone else. I wonder if Christians today are afraid. Many of the things we value seem to be slipping away and we wonder what the future will bring. Perhaps fear generates some of our responses instead of love for Jesus and for all of God’s world? Perhaps we need to simply accept others just as they are instead of trying to reform them. Perhaps we need to allow the Holy Spirit to do God’s work in this world and to chill out a bit? Christian faith has actually achieved a lot of good over the ages. The challenge is to make sure that continues to happen. Like the person who inspired me, I want to keep it simple. Jesus love is everything!

Richmond artist back at WOW awards Richmond’s Gillian Saunders continued her remarkable record at the World of Wearable Arts after her latest entry, One for Sorrow, became her 11th creation to make the cut for the internationally-renowned show. Gillian is one of seven designers from the NelsonTasman region to be selected to appear on stage in this year’s show to be held in Wellington from September 24 to October 11. Richmond’s Doreen Helms, Nelson’s Mike Ward, Claire Bywater and Carol Haragdon and Motueka’s Peter Wakeman and Sue Cederman have also been accepted for the competition which showcases works of art to be worn on the human form. Gillian, who became “addicted” to WOW after winning the children’s section with her first entry back in 2002, says she is thrilled to be selected for the show again this year. Although she has an impressive record at WOW, winning three awards and recording two seconds and a third, she says the standard of entries is so high that making the finals is “never a given”. Gillian created One for Sorrow for the Man category in this year’s WOW. She couldn’t give too much away about her garment’s design but did say it had a magpie funeral-military theme and took six months to finish. “I had some big challenges around the head piece because it was so heavy so it took longer than I expected. It has to be comfortable and balanced for the model and it took four attempts to get it right - I only just finished it a couple of days before the entries closed.” One for Sorrow represents a comeback for Gillian after missing the awards last year when she was busy launching her children’s book, Rosa Le Freak C’est Chic, which is based on one of her WOW entries. Gillian says she was also exhausted after creating her amazing Inkling costume that won WOW’s Weta Weta Costume and Film Section in 2013. “Inkling was so huge I needed a break but I’m still really passionate about it and I couldn’t stay away. I’ve already brought all my materials for next year.” One hundred and twenty-eight garments have been selected to take part in the WOW Awards Show with half coming from international designers. Competition director Heather Palmer says “the standard of many entries this year has been astounding and designers have impressed the judges with their creativity and originality”. Tickets for the show are still available for sale at worl dofwearableart.com

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I am worried that my Mum has

been caught up in an internet dating scam. What are the tell-tale signs? A: Online dating scams are fairly common, even here in Nelson. Hundreds of Kiwi’s are conned every year. Watch out for these tell-tale signs:  Poor or vague communication: Emails may be vague or use poor grammar or spelling.  Details that don’t add up: Details that don’t make much sense or conflict with other information.  Stereotyped profiles: Women who are: attractive, mixed ethnicity, about 31 years, christian, looking for 58-year old male. Men who are: professional (eg. engineer), work overseas, about 46 years, looking for female 38-58 years.  Taking you off the site: It’s always safer to chat through the site.  Asking for money: Scammers build trust over several weeks or months then ask for money due to some sort of crisis. The moment someone asks for money, you should end contact with them- no matter the crisis.

Never send money. Don’t be taken in, no matter what the reason, or how plausible or sad it sounds. Find more information at www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scams *Information is from the Consumer Affairs website.

Wanderers - club champions! A group of Wanderers rugby legends inspired the latest generation of the club’s players to produce another championship winning performance when they defeated Kahurangi 21-12 in the Car Company Nelson Bays division one final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Taylors Contracting Wanderers

had been beaten finalists in the last two division one finals but this year it was a case of third time lucky as they secured Nelson Bays crown on Saturday to go with the Tasman Trophy they won last month. tain Trael Joass says they were fortunate to have a secret weapon for this year’s final. Five members of the club’s last champion-winning team, who won the title in 1955, handed out the jerseys to the players before Saturday’s final and Trael says their presence proved to be inspirational. “All the young guys know about them and what they did for the club,” Trael says. “It was very humbling and inspirational having them in the sheds with us - you just wanted to go out and play for them. “I think the old guys enjoyed it too, just being around rugby again and being in there with the players. They looked pretty happy about it.” Trael says former players often presented jerseys to the Waimea College First

He says they had been under a lot of pressure to win after losing the last two finals and the presence of some of the champion 1955 team instilled confidence in the young players. “Some of the old guys were talking about how they ran onto Trafalgar Park in 1951 for the club’s very first game. It was very, very motivational.” Laurie Reade, who along with his brother Barry, Stan Friend, Alan Bell and Murray Nicholls, were the members of the champion 1955 team who handed out the jerseys on Saturday, modestly down-played their role.

“We just said a few words here and there but the players seemed very appreciative,” Laurie says. Trael says some of the 1955 edition of Wanderers also stayed around for the post-match celebrations at Brightwater as well. “The place was chocker. The whole community turned out.” For the record, Wanderers scored the game’s only two tries with hooker Dan McLachlan scoring in the 27th minute and centre Sione Holani crossing early in the second half. Morne Van de Berg kicked a penalty and a conversion while Jesse kicked two penalties. Mike Wells kicked four penalties for Kahurangi.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

Winter fishing has been hot and cold with some good bite days and some not so successful fishing days. This why it's called fishing, and why most fishers have stories of that one day where everything went right and it was the best fishing ever. That is some of what keeps people heading back out to try their luck again and again. However it is not always about just the fish in the bin, it's about the experience, awesome scenery, unusual catches, the power of the sea, the amazing sunrises, and banter with the crew. One thing that can change your day is to use a variety of techniques to see what will be most effective. There is no rhyme or reason some days what may work, it may be bait or artificial baits, jigs, slow jigs, softplastics, lures, flasher rigs, livebaits, dead-baits - the possibilities are many. Some days it is a certain colour that may be getting the most attention, style of jig, type of bait or fishing technique like slow jigging or very

lightly weighted rigs that may be the winning combo. Everytime I fish I learn something new from that day or from others. Fishingwise, there is still some very good fish getting caught around the district, kingfish, snapper and bluecod being the most common. The fishing pressure from more and more boats in the same areas is starting to show with less fish being caught on those days. Recently we witnessed 35-40 boats in the same spots, all with sounders pinging down, and, this proved to be a very slow days fishing for most. A combination of the sounders, motor noises from outboards and inboards, all resonating down to the depths. This is when it may be a chance to try a new area away from the masses and learn your own spots for future success. So next time you are out try something new or different, it may change your success and, even if not, it was worth a try. Enjoy the winter fishing all.

Winter art exhibition to be at town hall There will be a little more to this year’s Tasman Visual Arts Group winter exhibition in the Richmond Town Hall than just admiring paintings, sculptures and pottery. The exhibition will feature around 200 pieces created by many of the group’s 83 members. But there will also be an opportunity for visitors to paint water colours using the best quality paper and paints, watch some of the group’s artists at work and for young visitors to enter an art quiz with the prize of a free art lesson. “We want people to come in and stay longer, so we decided to offer a little more this year,” the group’s president Sheree Phyn says. “So we asked our youngest member, Sophie Holland (13), to

make up a series of clues for a quiz for younger people which should be fun. “We will also have working artists and a free try at painting with good quality water colours. And, of course, there will be a complimentary cup of tea or coffee.” Visitors will also be able to vote for their favourite piece of art in the exhibition’s People’s Choice Awards. In addition, the group’s members will be challenged to paint the best phrase or quote on an 18 inch square canvas, with the winner again being decided by the visitors. The exhibition will be held next Saturday, August 1 from 10am to 5pm and Sunday August 2 from 10am to 4pm, in the Richmond Town Hall on Cambridge St. Entry costs a gold coin.

Lead light artist repairs church window

Jessie Johnston

Lead lighting is an art form that Pauline English is passionate about. While many don’t class it as art, the beautiful and creative scenes that Pauline can make with different colours and textures of glass is something to admire. Most recently, Pauline was involved in cleaning, repairing and strengthening the stunning stained glass window that can now be seen in the new Stoke Methodist

Church. With painters and tradesmen waiting to do their bit in the conversion of the building, Pauline was forced to complete the window in just three weeks, half the time she would have normally taken. “It was hard work, [the panels] were very dirty, there was a lot of old putty and lead that had to come off the outside of it and [it took] a lot of careful handling,” says Pauline. “A lot of lead lighters don’t like doing repairs, but to me it’s all part of it. The chal-

lenge is quite rewarding in itself and seeing something restored is really cool.” Pauline began her craft over 20 years ago through a course offered in Westport. She then landed her dream job working for Glass Craft. When the shop closed, Pauline tried to work in other jobs but nothing compared to lead lighting. “I was really disappointed when [the shop shut] but I’m also really determined and I think if you love what you do, you’ll always find a way of doing it.”

Pauline now runs Top Shelf Lead Lighting from Richmond Glass in Nelson and says she loves working with customers to make a truly special feature for their home. The Stoke Methodist Church was Pauline’s fourth church for the repair of stained glass windows. She has also worked on a number of old, historical homes around Nelson and completed work for clients as far as Auckland. Her work can be seen at Lustre Gallery and Art 203.

The Richmond Bogans celebrate wrapping up the Nelson Bays Football Masters Division at Jubilee Park on Saturday. an unassailable lead with still one game remaining. The Richmond-affiliated team beat Wakefield 3-1 on Saturday to claim the title. The Bogans held off a strong challenge from FC Nelson for the title, with Mapua in third. In the women’s division, Nelson College for Girls top the grade with FC Nelson and Suburbs one point behind them. NCG and FC Nelson play each other this weekend in a game that could decide the title. NCG have two games in hand though. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont says, with the leagues now out of the way, the focus turns to the cup competitions.

"It's been another great season and the leagues are the barometer, everyone can have an offday during a cup game but usually the best team comes to the top over three months." He says there was plenty of excitement across the grades and says the secret to success is keeping the divisions competitive. "The one great success of my time here is the increase of senior footballers. In 2008, only 23 senior teams, we now have 30. If you give people good competition for a long time you get good numbers." Cup games for the three top divisions start this Saturday, with the Masters starting the following week.

They must be among the strangest names in football, but the Seals, Thistle and the Bogans have all won their respective football leagues, along with the more appropriately named Tahuna FC. Suburbs Seals were the main talking point of a busy Saturday afternoon for Nelson Bays Football. The defending division two champions stepped up into the top tier this year and remarkably won it in their first attempt. Stacked full of former Mainland League players, the Seals deserved the title, although it may have left a few red faces among the grade's more established teams. In the second division, Tahuna FC claimed the title several weeks ago, after challenges from FC Nelson Locomotive and Motueka faded late in the season. In a congested third division, Richmond Thistle sneaked ahead of clubmates the Hornbills, FC Nelson and Tahuna FC to claim the title. Thistle beat Tahuna FC on Saturday to take top spot. There were four possible winners going into the final weekend of the season. In the newly-created Masters division, the Bogans took

Netballers do well at national tournament

SPORT Briefs ORIENTEERING: Tasman’s Riley Croxford won the primary boys long and sprint course races at the national schools’ orienteering champs held around the Tasman district at the weekend. Riley won Friday’s sprint race at Motueka before winning the long course at Rabbit Island on Saturday. Mapua School’s Paulina Harrison was second in the primary girls long course race. The Nelson Orienteering Club’s next event is the Pelorus Challenge race starting from 10.30am to 12pm at Rough Island this Sunday.

Carol Cook

Russells Curtains Nelson under-17 representative netball team had a challenging task ahead when they left for their national tournament in Mt Maunganui without their inspirational captain Poppy Restieaux and vice-captain Taylar Kirker. The girls had time to “come to terms” with Poppy’s loss, however Taylor’s withdrawal on account on injury was just a couple of days before departure. However, to the girls’ credit, they came together to make the most of their opportunities in last week’s tournament. Although their ultimate goal was to make the top 16, their first task was a top two finish in pool play. Nelson made the perfect start with a convincing win over Hamilton City B 41–27 with Tali Uia leading the charge from goal shoot, while Natasha Bannister had a strong performance at goal keep. Kapi-Mana was always going to be a huge ask – they had lost by four goals to the northerners at the Marjorie Jenden Tournament at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. It was a tough game against physical opposition, Kapi-Mana were quick in transition on the turnover and punished Nelson for any unforced errors. Standouts were once again “the bookends” Tali and Natasha who worked hard throughout. The 25–41 loss put the writing on the wall that a top sixteen would not eventuate as Nelson were yet to meet the talented Auckland 2 team. Nelson dominated the Harbourside Invitation side by 33–12, which enabled coach, Mandy Whiting to give good court time to all her girls.

MOUNTAINBIKING: The final round of the Nelson Mountain Bike Mini MTB series will be held at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park this Sunday when riders and parents will dressup as their favourite Super Hero. Registration from 9.30am with racing starting at 10am. The event will be followed by round six of the Cyclocross Nelson Tasman series.

The Russells Curtains Nelson under-17 representative team in Mt Maunganui last week. Auckland 2 were “a really nice team”, they were skilled and well-drilled and very “clean” which lead to their 43–15 win over Nelson. Wanganui was the game which got away – it could have gone either way as the teams could not be separated at halftime. Wanganui were up by two at three quarter time however a few small errors crept into Nelson’s play and they ended on the wrong side of the ledger 27–32. Nelson regrouped before they met Wairarapa and as a team decided to go out and prove a point. Played in the pouring rain, Nelson was impressive as they kept Wairarapa scoreless in the first period and went on to win 39–9. Horowhenua had recorded some high scores with their accurate shooters, however, Nelson’s defence toiled to stop the flow and apply pressure to the shooters. Natasha had established a great understanding with her defensive partner

SWIMMING: Waimea College’s Sam McKenzie has been named Nelson Marlborough Swimmer of the Year, winning the Wendy Fryer Cup at their annual awards held in Blenheim last weekend. Sam, 16, from Tasman Swim Club also won the Belsham Trophy for the Swim of the Year after breaking a New Zealand agegroup record for the 100m freestyle. He also won a gold medal representing Sam McKenzie with New Zealand at the his trophies. Australian Age group champs and has collected many national medals and regional medals and records - he broke eight meet records at the winter champs and had the highest points for males of any age group.

Kate Hand which went a long way towards the 44–25 win. The play-off for 25th against Rotorua could have gone either way. Nelson played well and coped better with their physical opposition and although they had a three goal lead at half time, Rotorua chipped away at the deficit and finally record a 29–24 win. Mandy had high praise for her charges, saying “they were a really, wonderful bunch who had great attitudes”. Riley McKendry made great inroads throughout the tournament, going for the ball with two hands and working hard to break several centre passes. Natasha also came in for praise, as she had to mark some very tall shooters, however she kept moving and gained some great ball for her efforts. Goal attack Demi Woolley also impressed and played some enterprising netball with Tali.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Waimea win Div 2 championship Simon Bloomberg Waimea Old Boys senior B’s shaky start to 2015 is now a distant memory after they won the Car Company Nelson Bays division two club rugby final 1712 against Wanderers at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Waimea lost their first game of the season to defending champions Wanderers but quickly put that behind them as they set about compiling an impressive 16-game winning streak on the way to the final. And that considerable momentum proved unstoppable on Saturday when Waimea recorded win number 17 in a clinical display against a fired-up Wanderers. Waimea led 9-0 at half time after three penalties to Kristian Hall-Smith. Luke Christeson scored a try early in the second half to make it 14-0 before Wanderers narrowed the deficit to 14-5 with a try to Shaun Whittaker. Kristian kicked his fourth penalty to make it 17-5 with a late intercept try to Wanderers’ Daryl Giles and conversion by Kirby Johnson completing the scoring. “The boys worked hard for it and went really well,” Waimea coach Wayne Bateman says. “We just stuck to our game plan to deny them the ball - everyone played well.” Although the win was based on a gritty team effort, Wayne says lock Hamish Ballagh, No8 Pouvau Blake and prop Hamish Lecomte were key players. “Hamish dominated the lineouts and won quite a lot of their throws and Pouvau just took the ball forward all day. Our forwards were very good and the backs just tackled their hearts out.” Wayne says they were also determined to finish off a remarkable season with a win after narrowly losing the last two finals. Waimea ended their championship-winning season scoring 631 points and conceding just 174. WOB 17 (Luke Christeson try, Kristian Hall-Smith 4 penalties) Wanderers 12 (Daryl Giles, Shaun Whittaker tries, Kirby Johnson conversion) Ht 9-0.

Roadside Spraying for Vegetation Control in Rural Areas and Registration of Non-Spray Areas

Public Notice of Exceedence – Air Quality Richmond

Tasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock- down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn. ‘No Spray’ Registration Option for Residents Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval, the Council's contractors will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure: • Road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible; and • Vegetation height will not exceed 300mm; and • Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation; and • At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. An application form for your property to be included on the no spray database is available on the Council’s website – www.tasman.govt.nz – search for ‘no spray’. Opus International Consultants administer a separate vegetation control programme for the state highway network on behalf of the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Tasman District Council Community Grants Applications are open for Tasman District Council’s Community Grants. The Council allocates funds to support and encourage community-led projects. Over the last year, $207,000 was invested in projects ranging from local facility upgrades to local history displays, emergency service equipment to pest control, and local art to ANZAC commemorations. To be considered applications must be for initiatives within Tasman and/or demonstrate the benefits to Tasman residents. Ideally, the funds applied for will be for a specific service that has community support. This year the total allocation is $219,000 over eight categories; • Community and Economic Development Initiatives $30,000 • Arts/Culture/Heritage/Museums $32,000 • Festivals and Events $40,000 • Youth and Children $25,000 • Social Services $21,000 • Environment $20,000 • Emergency Services $16,000 • Sport and Recreation Facilities $35,000 Applications close 31 August 2015. Applications can be made online or you can download an application form at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/community-grants-application Hard copy application forms are available from Council Service Centres and Libraries in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Murchison. Contact Tasman District Council Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones for further information on Ph. 03 543 8403.
